RE: Any Gas Outboards???
ORIGINAL: Ron Olson As much as I like OB tunnels, there are probably a lot of us that started off RC boating with one with a K&B .21 hanging off it, the price of the gas OB's is getting way up there. Insane Boats recently came out with an OB lower unit and although not as attractive as the real thing it seems to work really well. They've also had a hull out for a couple of years now that should work very well with it. Look for videos of it on You Tube.
Ron i think another problem is that you dont see on TV like in the 80's & 90's much or any live tunnel hull racing in the USA anymore , and the newer kids are not inspierd like i was as a many others young kid to get into building a OB tunnel hull . the only thing Im glad for down here is the they are going to reopen the Miami Marine Stadium [:D] and it will bring back F1 tunnel hulls / hydro plane . drag / and many more kinds of boat racing back to south Florida [:D]

RE: Any Gas Outboards???
ORIGINAL: Outboard Jay This is a thread that needs to be on RCU...for gas tunnel guys in and around the Bay Area. I would like to connect with anyone who is stuck in limbo as I have been for years. We need to make ourselves known to others. I know that there are boaters that have an interest in quarter scale F1 OB's here in Northern CA. There have been many very informational threads from South Africa and other countries who have developed lower legs, hulls and engines that have been very successful. I'm informed enough to know that there are all sorts of negative arguments throughout the country as to the availability and costs of all the desired components needed to be a competitive racer.I have designed and built tunnel hulls since the late 60's from the Fuji OB through all the K&B's, Nelsons, OS , AMPS, etc. etc. ...I was OB chair for NAMBA; set the 1st speed record, and with the Pottles developed the 1st set of OB rules and set up the 1st outboard race at Spreckles Lake in SF with Mercury as sponser 36 years ago. Yes, age has caught up with me. I'm 83, but I still believe that the only REAL BOAT IS A TUNNEL WITH AN ENGINE ON THE TRANSOM! That does not set too well with my fellow boaters who like to go around and around as fast as they can. God bless 'em, because they have kept RC boating alive. If you feel as I do, express yourself on RCU....maybe the numbers joining with strong reactions to my message would be enough to involve a number of manufacturers in producing good ole' USA gas tunnel OB's!!! GO OUTBOARD Jay Selby, Redwood City,CA I also agree ,a real boat is an outboard boat!!! I love nitro and gas tunnels [:D] { i still like to go fast with my other hull's LOL } the sad thing is I am the only one that has 1/4 scale gas outboard tunnel hulls . and i am the secretary of broward model boat club district 3 . and no one in the Miami boat club has any gas outboards [:(] now the only guys up north of me in palm beach FL, they have 3 members that have gas outboards , but we only see them once a year for a district race [:'(] i wish more guys got in to them so i could club race between Miami and broward [:D]
RE: AMPS hulls & outboards pics& tips
ORIGINAL: chris402sr1 Hi I'm new to the forum and new to rc boats> recently purchased a Formula 402 sr1 the full sized version, and while researching info on the boat I learned about the amps international hobbies version and basically had to have one.I picked up a hull with the open cockpit design on ebay needs alot of work but looks solid, and found a pair of amps out drives they should be here next week. I plan on just playing with it around the dock and out on the lake, not racing it. I have read some about engines with clutches and that sounds like the direction that would be best, Not to say I don't want speed and sound cause i do. so my initial questions are what would be the best way to remove the existing paint on the hull, it's primered, color coated and clear coated, do i sand it or can it be chemically stripped. What would be good engine =clutch set up to start looking for. Will get some pics up soon. Thanks for any input Chris
Hi Chris and welcome to RCU [:D] . the guys here are real good on any help you need . I think i know the hull you just got , post up the pics of the AMPS formula hull you are working on and we will go from there . i will say this stay away from chemically stripped your hull , I made that mistake two years ago [:@] just plan on lots of sanding .. lol . but it will be worth it at the end [;)]. that hull is meant for cruising not racing so don't worry about over kill on your engine selection [8D] onr day i woul like to get my hands on a real formula 402 [:D]

RE: 56
ORIGINAL: mainiac68 Interesting responses so far. The ''Kitchen rudder'' might be something I'ld like to use in the future but not this one. The tug is modelled after a LT Army tug. Originally built as steam, this would represent a later configuration after being refitted to diesel. The scale prop will be 3.5 in. or 4 in. (can't remember without looking up) I can fit the performance of the gas engine to the boat by sizing the prop diameter and pitch. I've done electric for 25 years so am quite familiar wiht that whole scene. As this boat was originally built for steam and I have a single and a boiler built by a friend but it is not reversing. Also, steam is a whole different commitment to the model and I have numerous things to build before that. I am in southwest Florida and am surrounded by water to sail in; ponds, canals, lakes, etc. Organized RC boating is done in many parks and I've only been to a handfull and know three that allow IC. Anyway, I've run weed wacker motors but just in fast hulls, none in scale. I have seen it though and that's why I'm interested. From my limited knowledge of full scale workboats ( derived from fishing and lobster boats) I would need a gearbox that is basically in/out and reversing. Conveniently the gas motor is clutched so that problem is taken care of. So, discounting electric completely........any ideas?
Kanellos Rc Boat Builders did make a water cooled reversing gearbox for gas motors . i have one in a large scale gas boat with a full mod MRD G 26 . big $$$ but worth it [:D]
