RE: Hughes H1 scratch build.........
Dan, all I can say is WOW!! What a beautiful plane. I see you're in Manhattan, too bad i'm not in Torrance anymore, I would LOVE to see that bird in person!!!! Thanks for the advice, I was kind of wondering how that would translate to a smaller model. That's the main reason I decided to build the long wing. I haven't started on any of the Fuse yet, so changes are still possible at this stage. I will most likely be going back to Ca this coming summer for vacation, u think it might be possible to see it??????[:D]

Hughes H1 scratch build.........
Well, here goes. I've actually started my H1!!!!!! I'll post progress reports as it goes, here's the first. I enlarged some of the plans that were so kindly sent to me from a few of the members here -Thanks to all of you, but I had to hand draw the wing, as I decided to start with the long wing version first. I ended up adding 4 1/2 inches to each wing, for a 40" w/s. The fuse ended up being 30 1/2". I laid the first wing spar last night, and cut out the ribs and test fit them to the spar. I ended up using Profili 2 for the rib templates. I attempted to draw them on paper myself first, but the program was much quicker, and most likely much more accurate. Here's some photos, comments and feedback (good or bad) welcome:

RE: Warning Graphic Picture!!: My Thoughts from a Newbie
I would have to agree with MinnFlyer, it would be almost if not impossible to start the engine from the rear of the plane. When using a Chicken Stick (or gloved hand as I see most often), the most proper way would be to have the plane in a tail restraint or starting stand and start from the front. Using an electric starter, the most comfortable for me is to stand to the side of the plane while either holding the fuse, or using tail restraints. However, ALL carb ajustments I make from behind the prop. Just my opinions.............nothing more.

Jeff, I believe he said around 24 lbs, 3000 watts would be plenty. I think something with the power of either the Power 110 or Power 160 would be great on his plane. Pics of your setup??

Walt, here's a link to the programming manual, don't know if this will help. Also, i'm sure you probably know this but i'll mention it anyways. The 40-50 SS and 50-60 SS ESC's are Opto only, so you will need a separate Rx pack. http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=21

RE: New to E-Power
Walt, I seem to remember reading on one of the HK forum threads about programming throttle travel for that problem. I don't remember the exact procedure, but it's there in their forum on the product documentation category I think. I will try to find it next time i'm on there and let you know. That's strange though, because I never had to do that with either of mine. I used the 50-60 SS on my Eratix, and the 40-50 I use for my motor test stand. Neither one of them had a problem arming. I'll research a bit............ Rob.

RE: New to E-Power
+1 on the GP/Electrifly Silver Series, very good, especially for the price. I have 3 different ones, never a problem whatsoever. I also have a couple of Turnigy Super Simple ESC's, haven't had a problem yet, but I don't think I would put one on a highly valued plane. I'm just overly suspicious that way I guess [:)].

RE: Where do you get your Balsa from?
Here's a quick update. I received my order from Balsa Wood Inc. today, packing was decent, order was correct. Some of the sheets have some slight blemishes, hopefully I can work around them. If I did have one complaint, it would be that they didn't send as per my requested shipping method. They give you the choice of FedEx or USPS. I chose USPS, but they sent it FedEx instead. Other than that, everything seems great, and their prices are pretty decent. If anyone's looking for a source for their wood, give them a look. I would order from them again.

RE: Rant about getting started
Supercubfanatic, there's some very good advice that has been given you here. I would also like to add, those of us that come to this forum and try to help new flyers like you, do so on our own time also, because we love to fly, and like to see others get the same enjoyment that we do. ALL of us want to see you succeed, so welcome aboard! That being said, I would like to make a few suggestions of my own. First off, take a look at your screen name. That right there is your best option right now as far as flying goes. You already said you have a Super Cub, right? I think that plane would be your best option right now, considering your limited budget. Reason being, you already have the plane, you don't need to worry about buying fuel or learning to tune it (plenty of time for that once you learn to fly), and it is fairly easy to learn on. If you damage it, a bit of glue and tape will usually get it back up in the air pretty quick. The main thing to remember with that plane is that it's very light, and needs to be taken off and landed directly into the wind when you're first learning to fly it. Second, a few of the other posters mentioned simulators. Although a simulator by itself won't teach you how to fly, it certainly will go a long way to helping you get used to learn directional flight, especially orientation when flying towards you. You might even be able to make friends with some of the pilots at the field that will be willing to help you also, doesn't always have to be a club trainer. I help people at my field from time to time. As far as buying RTF's, some are VERY good, and if you tried to build a plane, electronics, motor, and all would cost much more than the RTF kit in most cases. Keep at it, and once you find an instructor you click with, you'll get it. Good luck, and happy flying!!!!!!!!

RE: Hughes H1 Racer plans?
Thank you very much Dave, I'll look into that. It looks more and more like i'm going to have to draw my own plans from pics, I can't find any plans anywhere. I'l just have to try to take dimensions from 3 views, but even finding good clear pics is hard. I've found some pretty good pics of Jim Wright's full scale replica, I'll probably use those pics. It's a shame he died in that plane, was an amazing replica.

RE: my first plane
Also, if you're set on a warbird, the foamie T28 Trojan RTF is a good investment. A bit more stable than the Mustang for a 1st time flyer, but still more than capable for a more experienced pilot also.

Hughes H1 Racer plans?
Does anyone know of a source to find plans for the H1? I would love to build one of these planes in a 50-60" W/S. The only kit i've seen is the Maxford H1, but it's a bit small. If anyone knows of plans, or anyone who makes a kit in the size I mentioned, I would greatly appreciate a steer in the right direction, Thanks. P.S. I would also like to build the XF11 too, any info on plans for that would be appreciated also.

RE: Too many 3536 motors
Larry, lower Kv doesn't neccessarily mean higher amperage draw. Think of the Kv rating as sort of a torque rating. The lower the Kv, the larger prop it can spin due to the lower rpm/v. You are correct about the rpm calculation, but keep in mind, this is a theoretical equation. The actual rpm is going to be realistically around 60-70% of that due to wind drag, mass of the rotating assy, etc. It's not too difficult once you get the hang of it, you generally want to shoot for a certain wattage per lb of AUW depending on what type of flying you want to do. Generally 100w/lb for trainers, scale type flight, 150w/lb for sport flying, 200w/lb and up for 3D type flying. Hang in there, you'll get it. It's much nicer (in my opinion, anyway) to be able to go to to the field and fly without starting and tuning, and then having to clean the plane off afterwards. Don't get me wrong, I love the smell and sound of Nitro fuel, but too much hassle for me. The costs normally associated with electric flight have come down quite a bit, and there are even very strong motors that you can fly large scale airplanes with too. It's just a learning curve, just takes a little time.

RE: OEM, but not the real OEM
They've all been doing it for years. Remember the old Chevy Luv small truck? The engines still said Isuzu when you opened the hood. Ford rebadged the Nissan Quest minivan as a Mercury Villager, and didn't even try to disguise it except for a different front grille. The imports have even done it.......look at the Mazda Protege from a few years back, it's actually a Hyundai Excel.

RE: Too many 3536 motors
I'm running the 35-36-1400 on my GP P47 on 3S spinning a 9X6E APC prop, and it's fast. The difference in these two motors is the Kv rating. The higher the Kv rating, the faster the prop is going to spin. In other words, the lower Kv motor can spin a larger or higher pitch prop, the higher Kv motor will spin at a higher rpm, so it will require either a smaller diameter prop, or lower pitch prop. It just depends what type of flying you want to do. If you want to go fast, run the 1400Kv motor. If you want to do more aerobatics or 3D type flight, the lower Kv motor with a bigger prop/lower pitch would be best.

RE: OEM, but not the real OEM
I hate to say it, but most of the cars you buy nowadays are either rebadged cars made by someone else, or almost all of the parts are. Ford has or had ties to Mazda, Nissan, Volvo, Gm had or has ties to Geo, Isuzu, Daewoo, Chrysler has had a long standing relationship with Mitsubishi. Kinda sad, but that's the way it is, and has been for decades now.

RE: accucel 6 5A.. what power supply are u guys using??
I have an Accucel-6, and I originally ordered the 12v 5a AC adapter from HK, but that power supply is not very high quality. I couldn't even charge my 3S 2650ma packs above 4 amps (I usually charge my packs at or near 2C) without the power supply getting so hot, you could smell it burning. I found a high quality power supply for a Desktop computer, 12v 3.9 amps, and it barely even gets warm, even charging at 4.4 amps. You can pick up PC power supplies pretty cheap.
ORIGINAL: arcticflyer Speedy- www.2dogrc.com has a 5gram micro that pulls 90grams...it is a 2 cell though and would require different batteries. I also saw a micro brushless outrunner mounted with a tiny gear drive similar to stock somewhere and I think it was Hobby City. I found the link to the geared one: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10003&Product_Name=Micro_Power_system_w/_Gearbox_GPS-C03
Hmmmmm................Thanks Arcticflyer, that geared setup looks interesting, and still weighs less than the stock setup. It's also rated for 1S [:D]. I did see the 5gm motor, and I think I read one of the reveiws that said it works ok on 1S also. I don't think I want to try to run 2S through the stock RX, a voltage regulator would add too much weight. They're both close in price, decisions, decisions............I think it might be a bit easier to mount the brushless 5gm vs. the geared setup, not sure where those gears would fit in the fuse.

RE: Sukhoi Su-26M BNF by ParkZone
Well folks, bad news and some good news. The bad news is that the 2gm Bl motor is too small for the Sukhoi. I actually got it to work by hooking it up to a different RX, and I was able to get into programming mode. I set the timing to high and it worked, but the motor got VERY hot with both a 6050SF prop, and the 7x3.5 I cut down to 5", went into LVC at full throttle [&o]. So, i'm going to have to do some more searching until I find a more powerful BL motor. The only bit of good news is I figured out what happened to my stock motor. It didn't burn out after all, one of the power wires has a break in it. I hooked a 1S battery directly to the motor, and it works if I wiggle the wires. I'm going to fix the stock one for now, but I will continue to search out a BL option......

I don't have a scale that sensitive to weigh mine. That setup takes 2S packs also, that might add a bunch of weight, and I think the stock ESC is only rated for 1S. Just thinking out loud............. I did have the throttle down, I tried both up and down, no difference. I'm going to play with it some more tonight and see what I can come up with.

RE: Sukhoi Su-26M BNF by ParkZone
Well, bad news [:@]. After waiting 16 days for my parts, it doesn't work. I decided to hook up the motor and ESC to test run it before I went through all the trouble to mount it in the plane, and it doesn't work. According to the programming sheet that came with the ESC, i'm supposed to get two beeps out of the motor when hooking up the battery- nothing. I tried hooking up the battery with the throttle in the full up position, that's supposed to make it enter programming mode- nothing. Twice, after hooking up the battery and moving the throttle down, the motor started turning, but very slow and jittery, then it quit and wouldn't turn at all (still spins very freely by hand though), almost as if the timing was set incorrectly. Problem is, I can't get it to go into programming mode to change it................ I'm not sure if it's the motor or ESC, i'm going to do some more tinkering tonight after work.
ORIGINAL: darticus Don't over build your mount as weight will hurt. You could also just UHU glue it the the foam if it allows and it will do the job. Ron
The only problem with that Ron is that the original motor sits way down in the lower fuse to allow for the gear reduction. I need to raise the BL motor up higher to match the original motor shaft C/L. That's why I was thinking about doing it with a balsa stand, maybe 1/16" so it's not too heavy.

Well, I think I came up with a good mounting idea. I was thinking about putting a small flat piece of Balsa across the lower fuselage, then adding two vertical risers, one at the front, and one at the back, with U shaped cutouts for the motor to sit in. Then, a couple of spots of silicone or hot glue should hold it in.......any thoughts?

RE: Seriously, need advice from a master mechanic (car trouble)
Foxy, any chance you can tell what color the smoke is? I know it's hard to tell while you're driving the car, but the different colors will tell you what fluid is burning. Bluish smoke is oil, white smoke is either water(coolant) or raw fuel, black smoke is overly rich fuel mixture. Also, the smell of the smoke will tell you what it is, as each fluid has it's own distinct smell when burned. Oil has a kind of burnt rubber smell, coolant has almost a sweetish smell, and raw fuel smells like.........well, raw fuel [:)]. An overly rich mixture will also smell like fuel (it's pretty hard to describe smells, LOL).
