RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
I have postponed the cowl screw issue whole I work on other things; but it does look like I can notch the fuselage edge by the the two screws and you will not be able to see it once the cowl is on. I solved the spring problem. Looked at a picture of the gear on Robart website. There are suppose to be two centering springs on either side of the tailwheel; mine are missing. a few pictures of my progress. And yes I had one of the planes with the too short hatch.

RE: Hangar 9 30cc P-47 Build Thread
Help again - I purchased my plane from a gentlemen who had just started it and decided he didn't want it. The rudder, elevator, flaps, ailerons, inner gear doors and all three electric Robart retracts were already installed. He had removed his motor. I found the screw in the below picture rolling around in the fuselage tail. The small spring, I think, fell out of one of the wings. The spring is about 1" long and 1/8" diameter. The screw is something about 8-32 size. Does anyone know what they may go to - it's the spring I'm most worried about, wondering if it was part of the retracts.

Yes, that is what I was worried about with those big slabs of vinyl over ultracoat. I think I am going to paint. Use the vinyl stripes on my t-6 Texan :)

RE: Applying vinyl invasion strips
well I got another issue. If I do this I have to take off the giant US insignia on the wing and fuselage first. Last time I tried this i really pulled loose a lot of the covering that would not iron back down smoothly. Is therea trick to doing this? Would warming them with a heat gun first make them easier to peel off. Steve

If I was going to paint invasion stripes which is the best way: paint individual stripes, or, paint the whole field white and then mask and paint the black stripes

Applying vinyl invasion strips
I was going to put some vinyl invasion strips on an 80" P-47. When I got the graphics it looks to me like it would be extremely difficult to get these huge vinyl graphics on without any bubbles or wrinkles. I also am worried about being able to get out any future wrinkles in covering under such large pieces of vinyl. i've thought about cutting the individual strips out and putting them on one at a time. Could anyone who has applied something like this comment. Thanks Steve

RE: Nose Art & Squadron Insignia / P-47
thanks for the videos, love looking at those old actual movies. I have a silver Ultracote covered P-47 I am working on. I had stumbled on a great product called Testors Dullcoat and was thinking about using it on the P-47. I've tested it and it does an awesome job of "dulling" shinny covering. You just mist it on and voila, shin all gone. Seems to have no effect as far needing to iron any spots later on. It would be a great product for WWI aircraft; but I think silver P-47's were relatively shinny it looks like.

One other question - does anyone know if a relatively new P-47 had a dull or shinny appearance?

Nose Art & Squadron Insignia / P-47
I have looked at dozens of period pictures of the P-47. I also have two squadron/signal books on the P-47. I'm working up a custom scheme for the P-47 I'm building but hit a road block. It appears that most P-47's did not have squadron insignia on the nose. Some did, but the vast majority had nothing, had numbers or had personal nose art pictures. Those P-47's that did have the squadron insignia on the nose, often had a personal plane name below the canopy. I haven't found a single picture of a plane that had both the squadron logo on the nose and individual art painted on the plane other than a name. Has anyone read anything about what the rules were governing squadron logos and personalized names and art on the P-47. From the pics I've seen it looks like this was a squadron decision.

Help - I have a MAJOR problem. I cannot get the cowl on, been trying for over a half hour and only got one screw in and already broke out the top of one fuselage tab.Impossible to get screw in with washer on it. I'm afraid something is seriously wrong the mounting tabs. Does anyone have any ideas. The problem is the screw angle is just to flat and no clearance from side of fuselage. I really need help here. PS: let me clarify, it is the top two screws I am talking about Steve

RE: Do you have ESM Electric Retracts?
I do not know what happened to the version 3 retracts. they promised they would get back to me around the end of July, I never heard from them. By then it didn't matter because I had already waited two months and ended up ordering Lado motors to replace the ESM's at another $300 for three motors. the Lado's have worked great. The ESM's are just cheap chinese crap copies of the Lado. As with many of these cheap copies you are crazy if you don't wait for the third or fourth version to come out after they have worked out all the bugs at the users expense!

I'm not the only one, read post #4 above. In my case it was not always the same thing. the last one was stripped gears. the one before that just quit working, and the third one was really weird - it seemed to work but if you put even a little pressure on it with your finger it moved in one direction and not the other and the motor made a funny noise, go figure.

They worked good for me also - right up until they stripped or quit working. I would not put these servos in any plane you value; but everyone can make their own decisions on that.

DLE55 in the ESM T-28?
I have a DLE55 engine I am looking for something to put in. I have been wanting to do the ESM T-28 for a while now and am thinking about about the DLE55 in that plane. However I have read through a couple of long threads on the ESM T-28 and am reading conflicting information on the suitability of this engine for the T-28. I'd like to read some comments from those that have actually put the DLE55 in the T-28 - how it fit, did you have to add tail weight, did it work out ok? Some pics of your engine mount would be great. thanks much.

WARNING - HD Servos are Crap...
...and I will never have them in a plane again. I just had my third servo go bad in the last two or three months. I should have quit them when I lost the second one, but live and learn. I lost the third servo on an aileron while flying. Luckily nothing bad happened. I am not using these servos in a high stress environment, just normal warbird flying. I do run A123 batteries at 6.6v, have no idea if this has anything to do with it - but you have been warned.

They can quit at any moment. You need to get your name on the list for V3 replacement when they get here. The V2's are defective and any one of the gear can malfunction at any time.

Installing Lado Electric Motor in ESM Electric Housing
My new plane, a ESM T-6 Texan ii with ESM electric retracts has been sitting for nearly two months now waiting for ESM/TBM to get me a set of gear that actually work. Well, while waiting I decided to try and install the Lado motor in the ESM housing. It's an easy conversion to replace the the ESM AIR cylinders with the Lado electrics. The ESM electrics are a different story, the housings are different. The Lado electric motor seems to be a great unit. Very quiet and quick, about 6 seconds with A123 batteries. The ESM motor bolts into the housing at two points and has front and rear mounting plates. The Lado motor "floats" within the housing with a single bolt at the rear. 1. Disassemble ESM housing, removing motor and front and rear plates. 2. Cut a 4mm brash tube bushing to go inside Lado motor mounting screw hole. The bushing allows you to use a smaller screw (3mm) to hold motor. this is because of the limited space to drill new mounting hole between existing holes. Note the hole for the Lado motor is not centered vertically. 3. Reassemble housing with Lado motor using a 3mm flat washer on each side of the Lado motor inside the housing.. It works like a charm. PS: I just discovered you can't mix Lado and ESM retract motors without using a reversing Y. The Lado motors run in the opposite direction to ESM motors, so unless you want one gear going up and the other gear going down, you got to use a reversing Y.

RE: ESM/Lado Retract Fiasco
OK, I am working with Christophe at Lado in France. I think we may actually be coming up with a way to replace the ESM electric motor with the lado electric motor. Because of the distance and time difference it takes time. But if this works it is not too difficult to do. Will keep thread updated with results.

RE: ESM/Lado Retract Fiasco
Well first off these ARE NOT the air retracts. I have the electric retracts. Lado knew that. I sent them pics and measurements. That being said, here are the problems. 1. The lado actuator body is to thick if mounted one way and two skinny (a gap) if mounted the other way in the housing. 2. I assume we need to use the ESM front mount plate for the actuator. But the holes to mount the Lado actuator are upper left and lower right on the motor case. the holes in the ESM plate are at 90 degrees. There is also a small bearing in the plate that doesn't fit all that well around the Lado jack screw. 3. At the rear the lado motor is longer than the ESM and sticks out past the ESM housing about 1/8". On top of that the rear ESM mounting plate does not fit the ESM motor. If anyone needs more just ask. PS: Bigtim, on your converted air retracts it looks like you do not even have a front and rear mounting plate. I know the Lado motor has a hole in the rear to mount a screw through; but what holds the front in place? I also just noticed the whole ESM housing is different on the air system then the electric system.

ESM/Lado Retract Fiasco
So when my ESM electric retracts all stripped out I was told by Lado that their R666 actuator was a drop-in replacment for the ESM motor so I ordered one at $115 plus shipping. Well it came today and I can see no way in hell this actuator will fit the ESM housing. I've sent an email to Lado, but that will take a while to get striaghtened out. Has anyone managed to put a Lado actuator in an ESM electric retract housing? thanks, Steve
