RE: Pitts or Ultimate
my experience is an ultimate will float pretty nice, a Pitts has a much faster sink rate. if your not used to controlling your decent with throttle, start practicing with your trainer before flying the Pitts. if you're used to using the elevator,( cutting the throttle and floating the plane in) you'll likely end up stalling the Pitts.

RE: bobcat setup help
I'll have to double check my measurement. I flew it today. the elevator was sensative at low speed, but not bad enough I couldn't control. I ended up turning the ailerons down to 1/8 deflection on low rates, that tamed it down. my origanal set up was too much throw for just flying around. the roll rate was pretty impressive. I never tried the high rate, I will remove some throw from the ailerons before I do. I used the rudder and elevator on high rates for the maiden and they seemed pretty good where they were. once trimmed out the plane flies inverted nice.

RE: grudge match-who's going to win?
fun day!!! the bobcat is fast but... not fast enough. it needs more pitch. the stick was surprisingly fast with the AX in it, it would be disgusting with that Jett motor. I got two flights out of the bobcat before I had a pilot caused motor problem. ( I guess I was in such a hurry to get the plane together & set up right, I didn't bother to properly torque the engine back plate bolts and lost two in flight. amazing what a bolt passing through a prop will do.) the first landing was scary at best, as I was on final looking good I started to flair and the plane ballooned about 15 feet before I bounced it pretty good. the second landing was dead stick, I let it settle in on it's own. much better way to do it.

RE: bobcat setup help
here's a quick run down of my set up ailerons 1/4 up/down low rates- max throw high elevator 3/8 low- max high rudders 1/4 low- max high CG 10.75 from the LE AoA 2.5 degrees+ on the mains all that's left is a good range check, and some taxi adjustments. (and good weather)

bobcat setup help
does anyone have the recommended throws, CG, and AOA while sitting on the mains. I read the bobcat thread, it seemed CG was around 10.3 inches behind the LE. is that the final best CG? the nose gear was tweaked on mine and I'm replacing it, I have an incidence meter in the wing and was wondering what should I set it at. tonights the last day before Sunday I have to go through the plane, so any help is appreciated.

RE: Two lessons learned today
sorry to hear about your loss. I think one time or another we've all been guilty of skipping a proper pre-flight check. a few years ago I was out flying at a school yard, a guy walked up and started asking me about flying. he said he had a small plane and no matter how many times he tried he couldn't get it to fly. I told him to bring it down and I'd check it out for him. the plane was a little 3 ch park flyer cub. I guess because I thought the plane was a "beginner" plane I got complacent about doing a control surface check. needless to say I throttled up the plane and hand launched it. as the plane flew off, it started to bank a little to the left and drop the nose. as I tried to correct it's flight path the plane turned harder to the left and dive. before I could realize the plane had crashed. luckily it only cost him a prop. after the crash I checked the controls and both the elevator and rudder were reversed. I did get the plane flying but, I was embarrassed about the mistake. I knew better but took the simplicity of the plane for-granted. I can say... this hasn't happened again since.[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]

RE: Choosing first cables.
I like the sullivan controls, they don't tend to bind and are easy to cut to the ideal lenth plus they still use an ajustable clevis on the ends which is nice for find tuning controls.

RE: Miss Martha's Speed ?
I just tried a APC 9x7 on my AX it turned it at 15800 max. I will pull the baffle and try again later. I'm still trying to deside if it is worth doing the swap. I'm sure if I put a 9x8 MAS prop on it, it would gain some RPM over the APC.( the .46 LA pulls an MAS 9x8 at 14200 ) but would 1800 rpm gain make a big enough performance difference to out weigh the added 7 oz in weight the plane would be carrying?

poorwboy and I have a friendly grudge match going about who's plane is going to be faster. in His corner he has a lucky stick with a Jett .46 running an APC 9x7 prop. in my corner is a bobcat with an OS .61 running an 11x7 APC prop. here are some pictures of my new(to me) bobcat. I mounted my OS .61 on it. I'm running an APC 11x7 prop turning it at 14400 RPM. I want to run an 11x8 but my LHS doesn't carry any so I'll have to order one. if the weather permits I'll be maidening it on Sunday.

post a picture if you can, I cant imagine a slightly twisted tail causing that effect in the air. I have had a plane with split elevators that the control horns were not installed equal on, want to cork screw if full elevator was pulled but other then at full pulls the plane flew fine.

just a thought but, have you checked the CG since the repairs? depending on where the CG was set before and how much epoxy you used it may be tail heavy now.

RE: I am now a nervous flyer?????
my advise is always end the day on a good note. last week a totaled my favorite plane, after the hour search and recovery, the first thing I did once back in the pits was fuel up another plane I had brought and took it up in the air. that way there is no time for the second guessing your abilities. every plane has an expiration date, some are just sooner then others. it's just part of the game. I know that when I first started flying a crash would rattle me. now if I have a mishap I just shake it off and move on. when I first started flying a seasoned flier gave me a word of advice, he said "say goodbye to your plane every time you take it up. the only way to guarantee you won't lose a plane is if you never fly it, and whats the fun in that" seemed kinda pessimistic at the time but in reality it's true. so go out and fly and have fun with it!!! don't worry about the mishaps there just part of the game[;)]

RE: How to avoid the rubber ring on the spinner
try a softer insert, or make sure you back up the engine before starting it. the ring is caused from the starter slipping on the spinner. try holding the starter a little tighter to the engine, maybe that will help. P.S. explain your signature???

old cap 21 revived
I rebuilt a cap 21 for a buddy and my wife just finished covering it. the last time this plane saw the air it was teal green and white, the plane got into a spin and ended up on the railroad tracks. the fuse was broken in half, the entire front was shattered. the back of the wing where the bolts go through was torn off the wing, one side of the leading edge was smashed and the sheeting on the wing was cracked. here is a look at the plane after the repairs. unfortunately I didn't take any before pictures, but this was the most extensive repairs I have made yet. now if I could just get my wife to teach me how to apply covering!!![:D] I made a cutout in the fuse for the muffler of the OS .61 FX thats going to be powering this thing, it should be pretty quick[:D]
