RE: Does this mean no maidens @ Sanctioned Event?
What does the size of the maidened aircraft have to do with the safety issue and rule of no maiden flights at sanctioned events? Can someone not wait one day to maiden an unflown model aircraft, or do so after the event? When I maiden a new aircraft I take the time to do it correctly, safely and with a thorough check-up after the first flight...before another flight is made. Why the rush to satisfy someone wanting to break a sensible rule? As a CD I'd think you'd be wanting to stand up for ALL the rules promoting safety and common sense and not agreeing to exceptions because someone thinks their flying is more important than the safety of all the other event participants and spectators. RE: Does this mean no maidens @ Sanctioned Event?
I cannot believe the question of maiden flights at a sanctioned event even has to be asked. Where in heck has the idea of common sense and safety gone? Maiden the plane prior to the event or fly something else at the event. It's just not worth a possible crash into spectators with an unproven model aircraft. Soft landings, Joe

RE: Name that plane, newly finished very old kit
Thanks, mj. Wish the photo was sharper..it's a pic of an old Kodak photo from the "way back machine" [:D]. Nevertheless, it provides many fond memories. And your Alley Cat looks great, too. Be carefull though as it might become a real favorite! Soft landings, Joe

RE: Name that plane, newly finished very old kit
The Southern RC Alley Cat was one of my favorite RC models. I scratch built this one in the late '80's and flew it in Cullman, Alabama when we lived there. Had an OS .45 FSR on the nose, Futaba radio and was covered in Monokote. Nice plane with no bad characteristics. Enjoy the photo and PDF. Soft landings, Joe

RE: Royal/Marutaka SBD2 Dauntless Dive Bomber Kit
The Jemco "Master Scale Series" Dauntless SBD-5 (or A-24) specs: Span 64 inches, Length 51 inches, Engine .60 - .90 Options: Retracts, Flaps, Dive Brakes, Retracting Tail Hook, 2 different Bomb Drops, Sliding Canopy, Rear Machine Gun Storage compartment,Operating Bomb Yoke Had a 5 piece canopy with each piece moulded separate, flaps and dive brakes have all 318 holes already made, scale cowl with dummy engine, 2 crew chairs, foam core wings and other details. RE: P-51 & Skyraider collide, no fatalaties!
Dramatic photos here and it shows just what can happen in an instant during an airshow. Both of these pilots were professional or they wouldn't have been in those planes and both used their experience to handle the situation well. No one on the ground got injured or killed as a result of this collision and the pilots lived to fly another day. Glad the story turned out reasonably well in spite of the lose of a vintage warbird. Miles Reed Falcon Biplane
Does anyone remember the Miles Reed Falcon biplane of about 54 or 55 inch wingspan? I'd like to find a set of plans and instructions or PDF copy of same to scratch build the model. Miles Reed was a great guy and I use to talk with him in the mid '70's when I lived in West Virginia. A nostalgia thing here so any help is sure appreciated. Thanks! Soft landings, Joe

RE: Rubber bands...
Back in the '70's I used rubber bands all the time and never thought twice about it. Today, I too enjoy seeing the vintage designs with the bands attached as it brings on the memories. That said, I'm now building two SIG Kavaliers. One is from the kit and has the bolts for wing attachment and the other, scratchbuilt from the plans for me, will most likely use rubber bands...though the Kavalier canopy design may defer that idea. One thing I've always done is place the used rubber bands in an airtight container with corn starch and shake the container to cover the bands with the starch. Next time out just stretch and snap the rubber band to get rid of the excess starch, inspect, and you're good to go. Generally I use the bands a couple of times. If the bands add to the vintage "look" of your model and you are comfortable using them, than go for it. Soft landings, Joe

RE: 20 size Bridi Sun Fli 4 ?
Now this brings back some memories. Built a .20 Sun Fli around 1979 or 1980 and had an OS .25 on the nose with a Kraft Single Stick 5 chan. for the radio. As I recall it was a real tight fit to get everything into that model plane and there wasn't much room for a fuel tank in that nose. If I was to build another Sun Fli I'd likely go with a .40 size airframe as I don't have a whole lot of hair left to pull out. [:D] Have fun with your build! Soft landings, Joe

RE: Dents and dings from building
One of the last things I do before covering an airframe is take a Q-tip and soak up a bit of water with it. Apply it to each little "ding" and bit of hanger rash and then use a hot trim iron run over the moist area to quickly raise the woodgrain. Do this over small areas at a time. Then go over the entire airframe with 320 grit sandpaper on a foam pad to remove the raised grain prior to covering. Using the Q-tip keeps the water in small concentrated areas and the heat does the rest. Soft landings, Joe

RE: You Know You Are A Real Sports Flyer When-
You know you're a sport flyer when you have a large rolled up plastic bag in your flight box as standard gear. You know you're a sport flyer when you are talking about your 4th Astro-Hog build and the guy you are talking to pulls out his cellphone and shows you his 5th. And you both get excited. You know you're a sport flyer when you fondly select the oldest plane and carry it gently from the basement to the foam-wrapped cradle in the back of the pickup truck. And when you get it asssembled at the field you don't have to fly it to have a great time. Soft landings, Joe

RE: Good Bye RC World
This is sad. I can remember visiting R/C World in the mid '90's when my wife and I lived in Melborne, FL. Actually thought about buying a home there in Orlando. However, the last time I attended a flying session "back then" at R/C World I mentioned to my wife that the residentual homes were closing in and it was only a matter of time before someone would want to build on the flying site. It truly was a nice place to enjoy modeling and I hope you folks can locate another flying site soon. Soft landings, Joe

RE: Astro-Hog Build
Thanks again for the kind words. Next up is hinging the ailerons and mounting the wing and tailfeathers. Covering will be with Ultracoat in the standard Astro-Hog scheme done with orange and cream lightning stripe and sunburst. I, too, have the 1/6 Pica Waco. Perhaps we'll have to do a build together in the future? Soft landings, Joe

Looking good, Bob. Tomorrow is a club function at Interlochen so I'll have to read the successful flight report after you get back from Tustin. Perhaps you can bring the plane to the Empire show over the 25th and 26th? Have a great time flying! Soft landings, Joe

RE: Sterling Stearmin, PT-17, lazer reproduction
Thanks, rcten. I guess I was kind of asking the question tongue-in-cheek. Most likely I'd go with the lazer short kit for the very reasons you mention. These builds sure do look nice and bring back some fond memories of seeing the Sterling PT-17 in the air. It's one of my wife's favorite airplanes so I'll have to find a plan and build her one...at least that's what I'd tell her...LOL!! Soft landings, Joe

RE: Astro-Hog Build
Thanks for the kind words, my friend. The boats are Midwest kits destined for my wife's office. She has a nautical theme (sailboats and such) and likes the small wooden models. Interlochen is certainly a beautiful location and is a great place to live during all the seasons. We call it "God's Country" up here, and for good reason. Interlochen still retains a small town atmosphere though it has become a popular place in which to live. On another note, Colorado is beautiful also. I lived in Denver, actually Aurora, in the early '80's and found the mountain scenery to be wonderful. My wife and girls were always with me when we took our Jeep up into the hills during the weekends. The Astro-Hog is all framed up and basically awaiting covering after I mount the wing to the fuselage. Been working on it for awhile and keep getting side-tracked on misc. modeling projects. I'll post a few photos later today. This is the 4th Astro-Hog I've built and has been an enjoyable project. I kept the original dihedral on this AH and used the tail-dragger gear as I like that configuration the best. Soft landings, Joe
