I totaly get where your coming from on the big engine..but like I said my brother in law errrrrr actualy my nephew has one with a os .32 on it we have done everything imaginable with the little boat and I dont think anyone has flipped it yet!!! we all (my brother in law and nephew ) agree it could probably still stand a bit more power so ill try the .40 and see what happens..if its to much I can always change it out easy enough... hey guys! wheres a good place to order props from? the LHS doesnt stock much in the way of props..lookin for a 9x6 3 blade

RE: 3M Vinyl Tape
I use it all the time and it works great.. That high dollar engine paint is no more gas resistant than dupli colors regular paints dont waste your money.... The dupli color lacquers will work decently for gas boats..do not use them on nitro powered though.. If you have several boats to paint realy should invest in a small compressor and a small hvlp gun and get serious about it Looks very nice by the way

Ok Didnt get as much done as I wanted to get done but managed to make a little progress today.. Finished smoothing in the pylon with chopped glass...I used a product called dyna glass its fiberglass strands cut short and mixed with resin. works like bondo cept its glass..once set its as hard as glass and as strong they make another type of it called tiger hair..its the same stuff except it uses long strand fiberglass and is stronger than the dyna glass..so tomorrow Ill try to get the bondo on it to smooth it all up real nice..heres a couple pics enjoy

Ok then you are probably right and have gotten a bad failsafe..and 20 feet is good for a radio check make sure and do it with the antenae on the transmitter all the way down.... cant wait to see it on the water and have fun on your trip this weekend....

RE: EASY VEE BUILD *NEED MORE HELP* (almost done bare with me)
Ok Im afraid the drill wont spin fast enough to do a good job that blade from home depot or lowes is like 7 bucks is all..I realy think thatd be the best that our beg the mechanic to use his cut off grinder to do it and give him the 7 bucks!!!! Ok I dont think you caught on to what I meant about the fail safe....the most likely reason the throttle servo doesnt work when hooked up to the fail safe is becaue the fail safe is doing its job and has it shut down...a fail safe kicks in when 1 of 2 things happen..the first is LOW BATTERY VOLTAGE....the second is LOSS OF RADIO SIGNAL....when either of those 2 conditions are detected the fail safe shuts down the throttle servo but will continue to allow for steering so you can hopefully have a bit of control...thats why I said check the batteries on the receiver if they are 2 low the fail safe is just doing its job....also when I sent you that radio I had to remove the antenae from the transmittier it just screws in and out you did screw it back on didnt ya???? with no antenae on the transmitter even in close proximity the fail safe may see too week a signal to let the throttle servo work... Put a fresh set of batteries in the receiver pack and try the failsafe again and see if everything works

RE: EASY VEE BUILD *NEED MORE HELP* (almost done bare with me)
No you dont have to trim the flex shaft after you cut it BUT THE SHAFT HAS TO BE CUT WITH A CUT OFF TOOL anything else unwinds the wires that make the flex shaft and expands it thats why youres doesnt fit anymore...you have a skill saw right????go to home depot and get an ABRASIVE metal cut off blade that fits your saw and use that to cut it with wrap the shaft with electrical tape where your going to cut it at use a white grease pencil to mark the cut on the black tapeOr you can use moms lipstick just dont tell her I told ya that[sm=72_72.gif]..dont try to use a so called fine tooth metal cutting blade on the skill saw thatll realy mess things up and no a hacksaw wont do it either...the blad is made from grit and is black in color thatll do the trick for ya to cut the new cable...... The failsafe should have come with instructions how to set it follow them and see if the throttle servo doesnt come back to life thats a brand new servo I sent ya so I doubt seriously the servo is the issue...also when your hooking up the fail safe make sure the batteries are fresh its set to shut down the throttle when battery voltage drops below a set point..if youve been running the servoes alot setting control rods and what have ya I bet the batts are low...... let me know about the pipe bracket im glad to make a shorter one if we need to.. and again you have done an excellent job..proud of ya for taking on such a challenge and making it come out so nice[:D][:D][:D] I have little doubt it hits the water and runs great

Yup id say bad welds BUT..that pipe at the top of the pic shows to have been badly overheated..that could be whats causing the welds to fail you better check the carb settings looks like your engine is running way to lean to be producing that much heat at the header

Did it get on plain? you said you couldnt get it up to speed why not????keep in mind boys and girls drag on a hull running on grass and drag on the water are 2 entirely differant things....grass blades hold the hull up so air can get underneath lot less drag there.... oceans57 where did you get the fan unit your using?? what size and voltage is it brushless????

RE: EASY VEE BUILD *NEED MORE HELP* (almost done bare with me)
Ok got caught up..sorry to be absent for so long...as for the paint issue I told him specifically what paint to get from o reillys and from what he told me he did if he got what I told him to they should have both been lacquer's however dupli color did have some red meatalic paint in enamle so he may not have paid close enough attention...but an excellent learning experience[:)] I think more than likely what happened was in his attempt to get the white spots out he got the clear on so wet it reanimated the base color and when he touched it and it went off to the primer it was just still soooooo wet I think if he had just not paniced it probably would have dried out ok..(thats why I gave ya my number for just such emergencies)[;)] If you still have the empty cans around read the labels itll say whether its enamel or lacquer probably at the bottom of the label..and FYI lacquer can not be sprayed over enamel... Anyway bottom line is I think it came out just fine very good job especialy given the problems.... OK youve leared another valuable lesson about the flex shaft..last word I heard from ya about it you were going to get a local mechanic to cut it for ya??? a cut off saw is the ONLY WAY to cut a flex shaft youre cutting it 1 starnd at a time with side cutters has unwound the cut end and its to large a diameter to fit into the collet..the only way to fix it is cut about an inch off the allready cut end but somehow I dont think you have enough shaft now to do that...soooo I bet your gonna need to get a new cable..aeromarine carries them or there are a few lised on ebay right now also marine specialties carries them there about 24 to 28 bucks...the freebies you can get from the lawn mower shops will work but youll have to solder a stub onto one end of it and you have no way to solder anything..soooo there ya have it... The throttle servo issue is a setting on the fail safe.. Also the pipe bracket I made for ya was suposed to be mounted on the back of the radio box not the front of the transom .. the dimension you gave me was for the radio box thats why the pipe is sticking up so high...it looks like the radio box has moved from the location I saw when I made the bracket and I dont think itll mount on the radio box and work soooooo unhook the pipe and drop it down to the height you need it and measure from the hole in the mounting tab on the pipe to the hole in the bracket and I can make a new upright piece for ya!!!!

Today is the first day ive worked on it in a bit..was feeling bad from chemo and then had a realy bad week on monday I found out the chemo isnt working any more.so I might be facing some very seriouse surgery one of my docs siad he has an experimental program he wants me on so will just have to wait and see...got home from the docs office on that monday mixed up some food for my 5 week old puppy he ate a little I sat down not feeling good from the news and guess what..he died with me sitting there holding him..that was monday..tuesday am I get the phone call telling me my favorite aunt passed away...not ashamed to admit I was an emotional wreck the rest of the week..boats were the furthest from my mind.....soooo I got started back on it today got the pylon covered with dynaglass and blended into the deck tomorrow ill get bondo on everything else and should be able to get primer on it as well...I bought some kandy tangerine orange to paint it with and I have everything I need to do the airbrushing on it so hopefully in a few days I can show yall the flaming skulls paint job...Ill post new pics tomorrow...thanks guys!

The switch I sent you is designed to be used with nicd packs like was said so the battery can be charged without taking the pack out..the switch has 2 sets of wires on one side and 1 set of wires on the other the 1 wire side goes to the receiver pack and the other set one of them will fit the battery pack DO NOT TRY TO RECHARGE ALKALINE BATTERIES oh and the transmitter you have does have servo reversing should be small switches on top of transmitter go to the airtronics web sight and download the manual for that radio

RE: Ever tried a EDF boat
the way those units build thrust requires speed...they have to be moving and raming air into them to build that kind of thrust...they cant build that much thrust when started when using them on airplanes they work because once thrown into the air and fired up there is very little drag against hte hul to slow it down and its able to build the air speed it needs for max thrust very quicjkly and easily...beleive me after my failure I researched the heck outa this to try to figure out why it wasent working...even a rigger has quite a bit of drag until it gets up on step I dont think the edf units will have enough low end thrust to get it on step...my unit is rated for like4 pounds thrust..the boat weighs maybee 2.5 with everything in it and the fan just blows and blows and blows but no speed...lots of airflow but no speed...like I said im gonna make some hull changes to reduce drag and try it again but id wait and see how it works before ya spend bucks on something that I realy think is gonna leave ya very disapointed...think about it..if it worked good why dont we have a class for edf boats???? or have a bunch of cheap chinese edf's

RE: Runs good on land
MAN Im glad ya got it going even if it was only for a bit...andMy 2 cents worth Dicko has the right idea how to tell when its right by ear I knew to check the plug we do that on race cars all the time dont know why I didnt think to say something about it..Ive tuned engines so long its just second nature to me I did my best to describe the lean and rich sound to ya but I dont feel I did it justice....The info Dan s and triploi gave you is EXCELLENT and I agree should be made a sticky....that info will get you started and dickos sound advice should help...and my 2 cents on your present setting is I think your HSN is rich not the LSN....since you were trying to open it up and accelerate and it was blubbering sounds rich to me..if after blubbering if you let off the throttle and it settles into a descent idle its prob the hsn if it was the lsn your idle would be bad..like was said if it runs smoothly from idle to mid range thats the lsn if you open up the throttle then the hsn is in play...and remember as you change one youll need to recheck the other they do work hand in hand

I posted one last night and it did tht to me too dunno why... what ya got looks good...you mentioned something in your mail about the rods spinning inside the plastic pieces those peices come in 2 sizes 4/40 and 2/56 you may need 4/40 control rods if ya do just tell me I have a big bag of em and ill send ya a few. and the linckage pics Dicko and Nooh posted are excellent examples...... And the nylock nuts only go on by hand a couple turns then you have to use a wrench to hold the nut while you tighten it up

RE: wet sanding
Sorry to take so long to come and check the posts...Thanks expressi! I put 4 coats of clear on it thats all that was needed I usualy will do only 3 but I had a bug land in it and felt id need to do some sanding and buffing..I dug vhim out and laid the 4 th coat and got it to flow out good enough that I can get by with out the rubbing....and thats a good example of let the paint job determine the coats of clear try to keep it to 2 to 3 coats..thats what most of the manufacturers recomend...but if the last coat hasent flowed out nice dont be afraid to spray a wetter coat to get it to flow out....I would advise against using any lights for anything other than ilumination..trying to use them to heat the surface will mess you up by creating hot spots that will dry/cure faster then the others..dont do it especially not a beginner....the big painters use lights like that to dry the paint quickly so they can get another car in the booth rapid curing paint like that serves no purpose other than to clear a booth for the next job quicker......... The sanding pads are a great idea they keep the pressure when sanding more even..and I like the shower idea if you can get away with it..I made a small sprinkler out of copper tubing and a small valve to atach to an air sander I have touse for wet sanding big projectsbut you could even use one of those misters the hardware store sell to keep a steady light spray going.....I do not know of any polyurethane clear coats available in spray cans that is nitro fuel proof now GASOLINE/OIL MIX is another story..the clear miss hydro recomended is the same brand I have used for awhile and it works great thats the PPG shopline brand they make a very good primer as well.... Now then..I have been experimenting with minwax clear spray can polyurethane..so far I have determined that it will spray over urethanes and lacquers with no problems I have not tested it over enamel YET...it IS NOT NITRO FUEL PROOF OR RESISTANT it will imedialty wrinkle up on contcatc with fuel and I havent been able to test it with gas mix yet but I will..if it works with gas thatd be nice..yes its intended for wood but if itll work why not use it??? And yes you can use the automotive urethanes over dupli color spray paint but it means you have to have a compressor and a spray gun....

its been tried by myself and a couple others..see ducted fan build in airboats.....all have been miserable failures not enough thrust and yes one of the guys is trying a double fan unit and my fan is the biggest most thrust I could find..it pushes it but no wheres fast enough to even call it fun...way way way slow mine is a 89mm fan unit running a 3900 kv brushless motor on a 4s 14.8 volt 30c lipo pack with a 40a esc...im going to give it one more try after I make some minor mods to the hull but im not optomistic

RE: wet sanding
Wet sanding gives a much smoother finish because the water carries away sanding debri before it can scratch the surface..plus the water acts as a lubricant making the sanding a bit easier and making the paper last alot longer...and as mentioned no sanding dust....wet sand the pieces with 600 grit and clear coat and they should look pretty good....the more time you spend in prep the nicer the end result... The pic is a boat I painted a couple weeks ago..the finish is just as painted it hasent been rubbed or polished,,thats what I mean by spending the time in prep now I dont have to sand and polish ...
