RE: Desert Jet Storm 2013 and Beyond
Super bummed. I am an attorney but in Colorado, not AZ. The Easement laws apply pretty universally in most states though. Chris, where would the club move to for flying? Surely this won't terminate the entire RC club would it? I reckon maybe you could move the event to wherever you guys would fly next, no? I hope the event stays with the CD Chris Balling and goes where-ever you and the club go Chris. Folks this was a first class event And amazingly fun. Keep us Posted Chris. If not at Speedworld, I pray the club moves to another great field and resumes the event!!! Shaz

RE: Winter project - Skymaster Large BAE Hawk
Thanks Rich! I wish they had 1/2" and 3/4" arms. I try to get my arms as close to servo as possible so I can ensure the greatest travel and therefore not having to limit my resolution with the ATV/Control Throw settings on my Transmitter. I generally drill into an aluminum arm if it is too long and just make a "new hole" kind of like if your belt is too large or too small. Shaz

RE: Winter project - Skymaster Large BAE Hawk
Dantley, got a photo of the inserts and actually the whole setup? As you know, I just went through ALL my jets andd go rid of my DuBro HD arms. Much to my horror, some of the splines that had seen blue-loctite had really worn down and were in critical shape... With a new SM Hawk 100 build upcoming, it makes sense to try out your approach...or stick with JR HD Nylon arms. But I am curious about the SWB w/nylon inserts. Shaz

RE: Skymaster MB339
Don't forget ground handling too. The 339 has nice wide stance and low and compact gear which make it very very stable, and take off rolls and touchdown rollouts are straight as an arrow. T33 has tall gear, narrow stance, much more similar to Panther/Cougar and other similar jets in that era. The T33 is much less stable on the ground especially with that tall and narrow gear. Shaz

RE: Perfect Model Jet
I've owned and flown Boomerangs, Kingcat, F22, F15's, CARF Tutor, MB339's, Ultra Lightning, Ultra Bandit, BVM F100. I cannot honestly tell you which is my favorite, because that answer is a function of what mood I am in on a given day and how I wish to fly that day (fast,? scale? Aerobatic? HArd? Mild? etc...) With that said, my BVM F100 may be harder to see than some of the larger jets like the 339 listed above, but it is by far the one that gives me the most satisfaction / adrenaline / pride / big fat grin from ear-to-ear flying (and landing like Rainer points out above.) The Ultra Bandit is a close second to my Hun. To each their own. Shaz

RE: BVM F-100
I wish BVM would come out with a cradle for the "dirty Hun wing". When you got all the stuff like wing fences on top, fuel probes, missiles and bombs and tanks below, the things become like porcupines, there is no easy way to handle them without knocking off a missile fin, or a wing fence or stressing the supersonic drop tanks, etc... Most guys like Dan Avilla just bought a big enough trailer and drive around with their Huns fully assembled and then just break them down once a year for maintenance. D I think you are going to fly the snot out of your beast, I think your expectations are well placed! [;)] Contrast my Hun without tanks, and then with tanks. The profile is sooooo much easier to see, plus more sexy! The CG doesnt blink, it stays in the same spot! Shaz

RE: BVM F-100
Wow Rainer, what a tragic story. Lockouts are brutal. Lockout on a BVM HUN? I would be on suicide watch. This is mine, it took me over 500 hours to finish the flite metal, nomenclature, drogue chute, tanks, missiles cockpit, etc...most satisfying plane I have ever owned. I am sure your new Hun will bring you much satisfaction Rainer, your build on the last one is an inspiration! With that said, there is NO substitute for having Dan Avilla stand next to you and coach you on your first few flights. The guy knows how to fly these BVM Huns better than most people know how to breathe. I felt like a expert in 3-4 flights. He has a world of knowledge and he is a great guy to boot! Dantley's new Hun ride was my 2nd Hun for all of 3 weeks. He talked me out of it and STILL wouldn't trade me me his SM Hawk 100 for it!!! [:)] D, you GOTTA maiden with tanks and NEVER take them off. Scott is ABSOLUTELY correct. If you in fact read through the entire manual and all of Bob's commentary on the Hun, here are some little known facts that would behoove any BVM Hun owner to know: 1. Always fly with tanks, not only do they make visibility substantially better, they also are mandatory in case of flame out. With a flameout over non-runway area, pitch your nose down, keep gear UP, if you make the runway, great, drop LG and land, if you wont make the runway, according to Bob, the tanks literally act as 2 soft and smooth sleds. They take minimum damage and scuffing and preserve your beautiful jet and can land on dirt or grass or brush very easily. Without them, you may cartwheel <-not good. 2. ALWAYS remember to release elevator before touchdown on a flameout, gear up, tank landing. The leading edges of the Stabilators of the Hun hang lower than the bottom of the fuselage and they are Sharp and non-forgiving. If you flare and hold elevator all the way until touch down, they will dig into the dirt and rip out <-not good. 3. Refuse to let the plane fly you. Take control. Yes, it is $12-17,000 in the air. So what? you signed up for it. So tell the plane WHAT to do and dont get caught staring in awe as it becomes a speck on the horizon. At this year's Colorado Jets 2012 my entire mission was to put multiple flights per day on my Hun, and NEVER let her get farther than 300 yards in each direction. Mission accomplished. It is challenging yes, because even with the wingtanks and Bullpup missiles, the plane is slippery and sneaky fast. But she is still built like a tank and can handle the "G's". So fly your plane CLOSER and make her obey you. She is quick to go EXACTLY where you tell her to and you will find that even though it takes more concentration, she isnt half as hard to see if you make yourself keep her close in (especially on down-leg where most people tend to see them as just silver blurs) 4. This one is from Dan Avilla. He was right since I had to try it once. If you land hot...and you KNOW you will go long and OFF-Road. You can comfortably lock your brakes up, slam the steering left or rght, and literally do a "hockey-stop" with the Hun. Those soft BVM tires won't thank you, but your turbine will, and so will the hundreds of hours you spent on the finish. The ordnance will thank you, and also the wings that would have otherwise have the tanks and ordnance rip off them and possibly damage the wings. I did a full hockey stop one time last year. The Landing gear handled it as if they were purpose made for it. Any chinese ARF would have the trunions explode, the struts bend 70 degrees, then the Retracts pull straight out of that cheap 5 ply. My Hun just kind of came to a stop sideways and looked at me and said "dude, you are weak, you are a pu$$y, you call that a hard stop? That was soooo easy for me to do that I think I liked it. Get your pathetic attempt at stressing my landing gear out of my face you panzy". <-good. Anyways, D, give me a call if you want some non-expert advice on your Hun. Compared to that trainer Hawk 100, the Hun will help you reach down and grab a pair! [:D] Happy Landings all! Shaz

RE: evsd-5u-evo Gear Door and Brake Issue....
Disco, yes obviously ALL valves are supposed to hold pressure. I have had 3 of these but Bill Hatcher was nice enough to program the first 2 for me. I JUST (meaning 2 days ago) had the SAME EXACT issue with my brand new EV5U PRO. Doors would not go up. I called Todd at Dreamworks to figure it out. Todd was very helpful. Here is what I learned and what solved my problem: 1. Make SURE brakes work before programming gear. That is only way to know you are not on the wrong reverse in your transmitter on the Gear channel. If brakes do NOT work, you need to reverse the channel for Gear FIRST and then re-program brakes. Once brakes work as they are supposed to, you know your reverse/normal is proper on the Gear channel. 2. Do NOT use the Reverse functions available on the EV5U itself. Per Todd they jack it all up and make it so the programs (Mode 1, Mode 2, mode 3, mode 4) do NOT work correctly. In other words, the Reverse function on the EV5U is completely useless, a total red herring, and needs to be removed from the program in the system. Todd mentioned that they intended to do that before this current series came out, they just never got to it, and it will definitely be omitted from the next batch of EV5U PRO's. So HOW do you reverse airflow on gears and doors? The same way you would on a UP valve. By plucking the airline out of one nipple and plugging it into the other nipple. If you need Gear reversed. Switch lines 1 & 2. if you need doors reversed, then switch lines 3 and 4. Brakes are 5. All this is moot if you have a bad valve that leaks, but my experience with these valves is that they USUALLY work well and the issue is from improper programming. With that said, it wouldn't kill the distributors to let us all know that things like "reverse" on the EV5U is a useless function BEFORE we spend 4 hours from 8 to midnight frustrating ourselves with it and banging our doors and gears open and closed. Just seems like a responsible disclaimer to make rather than letting us have to call and pester Todd about it the very next day. Last Disco is the fact that apparently the "door delay" is really controlled by the "gear delay" function. Dont ask me why. Lord knows what the door delay function itself is really for. Maybe it makes your coffee or something, but it never really cares what I have to say to it, it just does what it wants. Somebody that is capable of articulating themselves in proper English needs to write a manual for this valve. The manual is about as useful as the Futaba 12Z-14MZ-18MZ radio manuals. Which is not saying much. Best of luck, Shaz

RE: 2012 Colorado Jets
I am also selling a NIB COMP ARF Tutor without the Landing gear (CARF sells gear for $1000). This plane can be bought from Comp Arf for $3400 + $450 shipping. I am selling mine for $1900. You do the math. It is COMPLETE and can either be fitted with CARF LG or your own setup. If anybody is interested, I can haul it up. I will be flying my RTF Tutor at the event so you can see what a sweet docile plane it is. PM me if interested as I will not be bringing her up unless we talk first. Can't wait fellas! :) Shaz

RE: Question to Jet Event Contest Directors
Kirk, I have always operated under the understanding that a "Jet Event" entry airplane needs to m eetAT LEAST one of two criteria: It is EITHER a turbine powered, or a jet (no prop)-or ideally, it is both. I think the threshold requirement is that your aircraft be EITHER of the two, rather than trying to define the plane that enters in the event as having to be singularly only one of the two. For the large part, most of our aircraft on this forum check off as BOTH turbine and jet. Unfortunately an electric Tucano is NEITHER a jet, NOR turbine powered and would be a tough sell since it doesn't meet EITHER of the threshold requirements. EDF jets are still jets. Turbine Tucanos are still turbine powered. Electric Tucanos are neither. Get a plane that matches any of those two requirements, and you will run into much less static and have a fair argument as to why you should be allowed to fly. Just my 0.02 cents. Shaz

Need help ganging jetronics valves to jetronics sequencer!
Hey All, Picked up a jet with a jetronics sequencer that has 2 other jetronics valves plugged onto it instead of servos. Though I have used jetronic sequencers before, they have always been ganged with servos attached to mechanical valves. Therefore it has always been Very easy to Know how your programming is going as the servos just simply do what they are told to do by the sequencer and you can visually see the programming coming along. However, I have never used an electronic sequencer with all electronic valves and am not sure which chronological sequence I program what valve in. Do I FIRST try and program the double action and single action valves? Or do I first program the sequencer? How do I know when each valve is properly programmed since I won't be sure if the sequencer is programmed incorrectly or the valve is programmed incorrectly??? Is there a simple method and approach to this that you "all jetronics" guys use??????? Thanks in advance, Shaz

CARF UL vs. Classic Lightning Throws and CG?
Hey All, Picked up an Ultra Lightning near ready to fly. As I search C-ARF's website, under the Ultra Lightning page, the instructions are available for download. Unfortunately once downloaded, I realized that the manual is for the Classic Lightning, not the Ultra. Are the throws and CG's for both planes identical? Even flaps, even though the flaps are so different from each other in style, lift, braking potential, etc? How about CG? Can somebody direct me to exact Throws and CG in inches or mm's for the Ultra Lightning please (not degrees of angle)? Thanks in advance! [:D] Shaz
