RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
ORIGINAL: mike early Any of you gentlemen run a 3-Blade on a Saito .82? Any suggestions? Running a 13x8x3 on my .91. Does the .82, with it's shorter stroke, like to rev more than the .72 and the .91?
I run the MA 12x8x3 prop on two of my 82a's. I find it to be a good warbird prop.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Oh boy! I've started a membership drive. For an update, (2) 30's, a 62, a 72, (3) 82a's and a 100. All putt-putt nicely at idle, purr in the midrange and punch out power at full throttle. Can't remember a dead stick with a Saito, with the exception of running the tank dry a time or two.

RE: Kyosho P40 Build
Thanks for the compliment! I used Tamiya acrylic paints to match covering colors as close as I could, then coated the plane with Minwax spar polyurethane satin. I now wish I'd used a lighter blue or gray for undersides (see Dallas Clinger's P-40 in an online search). But at 85 MPH and 85 ft. it looks ok. Since I chose to use a 3 blade prop, the only suitable spinner I had on hand was the H-9 PTS P-51 2.75" plastic spinner. It's inexpensive, but being plastic, I'm wary of it.

RE: Kyosho P40 Build
I would probably consider the FG-14, except for the weight of an additional battery for ignition and occasional interference problems associated with gas engines. Plus, I'm heavily invested in 4-stroke glow power. In any case, reinforce the firewall and the area where the retract bellcranks are attached. I recommend using 4-40 rods for retract control rods. I also used clear covering material on the underside of the tail feathers to cover the hinge line (applied with elevator in an up position). Also, consider sealing the covering material. Older Kyosho covering will let go fairly quickly; the newer printed covering might not be much better, based on my experience with the 50 size Spitfire. My P-40 is a great flier, easy to taxi, takeoff and land.

RE: Kyosho P40 Build
I'd go with the Saito 72. It'll fit inside the cowl and fly the plane very well. Here's another pic of my older version with a Saito 82a for power.

Can I get one with an umbrella on it? In the summer the sun beats down on us at the field, and it could really help with field repairs. And, it would help keep the ice in my Coke from melting.

RE: Seagull Models Zero ARF - Online Build
Then you shouldn't be far off. This plane is a good flyer, and the washout at the tips make it manageable at lower speeds, although I wouldn't call it a floater. Good luck on the maiden and post some pics if you can.

RE: Seagull Models Zero ARF - Online Build
According to the manual CG is 6-8 centimeters (2-3/8" to 3-1/8") from leading edge measured at wing tip. I don't remember where that relates to wing spar, but you might want to check to be sure.

RE: Seagull Models Zero ARF - Online Build
It is fast! I changed to a 11x7 3-blade hoping to slow it down a bit. Result: Just as fast. When I looked for one of these, it was already disco'd. I bought replacement parts, wing set, tail feathers, fuse, cowling and canopy to complete mine. It cost more, but worth it to me.

RE: Seagull Models Zero ARF - Online Build
I am faced with the same dilemma. Although my Seagull Zero has a 52 2-stroke installed now, I have a new cowl and would like to install a Saito 82. Even with the 2-stroke, the cowl is too long and the engine is a bit too far forward, but this is not a scale plane and is designed for sport flying. You might have already seen posts earlier in this thread that someone else installed an OS 70 and had to move the firewall back.

RE: How many WWII German aircraft were MINUS the swastika?
I concur that displaying the correct markings for a correct period aircraft are essential to scale modelling. Have any of you seen the "stars and bars" applied upside down on US model planes? I have have. Am I making a valid point?

RE: GP P-47 with Thunder Tiger .36 - Muahahahah!
Mine had a castering tailwheel. A blast of propwash on the rudder was all that was needed for turning and control during taxiing and takeoff. Bassfisher has the plane now and I've heard no complaints-and sadly, no engine sound (electric now).

RE: HARMON ROCKET
Although I don't have mine nearby to measure wing thickness (for sale at local hobby shop), I can tell you the HR3 has a very thick wing. Despite the thickness, it is quite fast and handles real world maneuvers of all sorts well, but is not a 3-D machine. It is quite easy to fly and easy to land. If mine doesn't sell soon, I might keep the plane and install a 4-stroke engine.

RE: Kyosho Spitfire 50 Build
I'm planning to use a Master Airscrew 12x8x3 on my 82 powered Spit. MA only offers 12x6 and 12x8 3-blade props in 12" diameters. I'm not sure about Graupner or APC offerings. I have a 12x6x3 on my Kyosho P-40 that works well, but could handle a little extra speed from the 12x8. I use the 12x8x3 / Saito 82a combo on a Hangar 9 T-34 and really like it.

Those look great, too! I've flattened mine a bit but don't have a pipe bender that would work. Mine look like a smaller version of the stock pipes.

Warbird Nut, How did you fabricate the exhaust stacks for your Zero? I have made mine from some smaller diameter aluminum tubing than the copper stacks provided, but can't achieve the proper shape and curve for each stack.

RE: New Hanger 9 p-51 mustang **Trainer?!?**
Devilbrad, Rudder will be needed for taxiing and to control the plane's yaw tendencies on takeoff. You should use ailerons only in flight at first to limit workload. While it's not impossible to have a successful solo flight with the PTS with some simulator time, it's best to have an experienced trainer on hand to buddy box with you if you are not familiar with "real world" low wing r/c flying. You may have issues with trim, engine conking, etc, that an instructor can handle in stride.

RE: Kyosho P40 Build
I must be mistaken about the MA 14x8 3-blade; it is probably a 14x7. I know the 12" MA 3-blades are only available in 12x6 and 12x8. When Kyosho has the 3-blade spinner available for the new 50 size BF-109 as a separate accessory, I have an 11x7 to put on my older 109 powered by a Saito 62.

RE: Kyosho P40 Build
RPM is in the 8000-8500 range since I run the engine a little rich. It doesn't scream, but keeps pace with a friend's H-9 60 size P-40 powered with Saito 100/14x8x3 running a 20% fuel mixture. I use 15%. Vertical and top speed would probably be better with a 13x6 2-blade.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
ORIGINAL: spaceworm In my limited experience with Cubs, I understand that a larger engine is needed/desired in the clipped wing varients vice the full span versions. My thinking this is due to the full scale ''flying on the wing'' and the clipped wing version ''flying more on the prop''. I have the Sig 1/4 scale full span Cub with a EI modified G23. I was thinking of clipping the wings and a larger engine for more aerobatics, and contacted Sig, since they have a clipped wing kit for the same airframe. They said that the full scale ''clipping'' involved removing ribs from the ROOT end of the wing, not the TIP. Other mods were also required to handle the extra stress from the anticipated aerobatics. Their clipped wing kit follows this design, and also is one piece vice the two piece full span 1/4 scale wing. I have also the CG Anniversary Cub that was clipped before I got it for rebuild. It calls for a 40 engine unclipped and a 60 when clipped.
The World Models 1/6 Clipped Wing Cub 48 might be a candidate, although some 3D maneuvers (hovering) might require at least a 72. I had this plane powered with a 62 and it is a great flier, being more aerobatic than my flying ability could demonstrate. Knife edge passes were impressive. I gave the plane to a friend who is mounting it on floats, but kept the engine.
