RE: World Championships Experience
ORIGINAL: Don Szczur What impressed me most about Christophe's flying (and Benoit) was that they were flying slow and deliberate, yet very smooth and graceful, not sloppy as an airplane would do when flying that slow. I spoke with Christophe and he is running (if I remember it correctly) a 20 x 10 with a somewhat conventional shape (versus wide blade). It did not have the same constant width (i.e., paintstick) shape that several others were flying. The main advantage of the YS 175 is the ability to run larger props. I'd try a larger diameter prop on my Black Magic but would need to change landing gear to get higher clearance. I'm running a very small prop (18.1 x 12) but am comfortable with the setup. Christophe and Benoit also had the best rolling circles. Most agree the geometry of many of the finalists were off, particularly the half cuban 8 and the sharks tooth. But what is this technically- 1 point per 15 degrees. All the best pilots held their aircraft at a constant distance out which was very impressive particularly during the early afternoon when the wind picked up some.
Hi Don, Thanks a lot for this report thread! As regard Cristophe's slower flight speed, could it be due to a lower wing loading? I remember in the late late 90 competitions his Topline was about 500 gr lighter than the other planes (4100 gr vs an average of 4500 gr). Do we know what was the weight of his planes at Muncie? Is there some public data about this? What do you think about this? I also noticed that now mostly all the planes end up near 4.8 kg. Could a lower wing loading be an advantage for todays sequences? Thanks again!

Hi Juan, any news on the general availability of this motor? I see that you've bolted it directly to the airframe. Doesn't it need a mounting cage (like the Hacker A60 one)? Great!

ZNLine Integral Kit - good for electric setup?
Hi, I'm planning to buy the mentioned model as my next pattern ship - it will be electric powered! I'm referring to the ZNLine kit, composite fuselage + foam wings and stabs. Is it light enough for electric? I want to go with an outrunner motor, perhaps heavier than the usual Hacker C50 setup. If anyone owns this beast and wants to share some weights, it would be great [:)] Thanks!

Small pattern plane for winter training
Hello guys, I've posted this in the pattern forum also, I repost it here in case some people visit this forum and not the other. If you're interested in a small pattern plane for winter training, a friend of mine and I have designed one. You can find more infos along with pictures and design plans here: http://www.baronerosso.net/forum/aeromodellismo-progettazione-e-costruzione/115712-mini-f3a-1-2-vi-presento-il-dedo.html I hope you'll find it interesting! Small pattern plane for winter training: info and building log
Hello guys, first of all let me wish you happy new year! I'm glad to share with you a project that we (a friend of mine and I) are starting right now. It's a small pattern plane that we designed in order to do some F3A training during winter time :) Main specs are the following: - wingspan and length of 1 meter - made of depron - very light: target weight is 500gr - very high power to weight ratio: motor will be an Hacker A20-20L (or 22L), APC 10x4,7 - very low wing loading: about 21 gr/dm^2 If you are interested, you can find the building log along with pictures and design plans here: http://www.baronerosso.net/forum/aeromodellismo-progettazione-e-costruzione/115712-mini-f3a-1-2-vi-presento-il-dedo.html Any comment is welcome!

RE: Can some expert show how they use the Futaba flight condition?
Hi, I'm certainly not an expert, I'll leave more thoughtful replies to the bigs, but perhaps I can still give some suggestion to begin with. One thing I've learned is that, as Arch correctly pointed out, all these functions add complexity. I've found that trying to imitate an expert setup - let's say many conditions for different maneuvers - is not the optimal thing to do IF you are still learning pattern flying. I've done that, created multiple conditions just because I've seen other pilots do that. Later I discovered that I was still tweaking my normal flight condition and I did not use very often the other ones. So, I could say that if you are beginning with pattern flight, or if you are asking "what conditions should I have", I would say to start with ONE and work on that to give you the best of your performance - it will takes months, really! [:)] In my case, later on when I started to compete and flying the sequence all the day, I've FOUND that I NEEDED other conditions to spin, snap and stall turn more easily. Then I started to apply them and I'm happy now, I've found that you can fly much more precise using them. But the point is that you have to NEED them, IMHO. Hope this help you! [:)]

RE: Trim Question - Needing left rudder on downline at idle
ORIGINAL: ual767 The problem is that any fixed thrust angle will be wrong most of the time - this is particularly so with prop changes on electric motors. You don't want to have to change the motor's thrust angle every time you change props. It is much easier as Jim (OhD) says to mix away the yaw. Ideally, you can set your plane up in the tx as different models depending on the prop and set the mixes accordingly then just change models when you change props and you will have the right mixes already done. Granted, this will take many flights to get right but when you are done, the throttle changes will be completely invisible in the yaw axis. If you mechanically trim for downlines, you will have way too much left rudder trim flying around other 95% of the flight and require even more right rudder mix to cancel out the left offset in the rudder.
I honestly don't like the full mixed approach. I don't think it works well, because you mix the throttle to rudder, so with a given amount of thr you get a give rudder offset. The reality is more complex, because the effects of props are a function of AIRSPEED. So ideally one would want rudder movement in function of airspeed, not throttle position. In fact we have situations where the throttle and speed doesn't go together - i.e. the classic top of corner problem, where the airspeed starts to decrease -> rudder is not enough anymore -> left yaw begins... Just my opinion.

RE: Thinking about electric in my next pattern project
Thanks guys. I see in that the AXI F3A costs less than a half a Plett 30-10 EVO! Do you know why is there such a big difference? Flight performance are comparable? If not, in what the Pletty is superior? Thanks

Thinking about electric in my next pattern project
Hello guys. I'm considering to switch to electric power for my next pattern plane. I would like to hear from you some suggestions about the best setup that actually WORKS. I'm in particular concerned about the motor, since I came from an airplane with limited vertical power (OS140RX and a bit heavy ship), I would like to get something that is powerful at least as a YS170 - which could be the alternative power plant. I see the common solution is Hacker C50, but I would prefer an outrunner motor. So my questions are: 1) Why the C50 is still so widely used? I would prefer an outrunner, since it is simpler - i.e. no gearbox. 2) Are there any outrunners that are appropriate for pattern flying like the C50? AXI? OXAI Dymaxion? I've seen Plettenbergs, but they are very expensive. 3) Will an electric setup yield a heavier plane? Doing a small calculation to me it seems that the two setups are almost equal, considering engine and battery (fuel) Thanks in advance for any experience you might want to share!
ORIGINAL: selnekav Hi, The wings are balanced, about "warp in the wings" i quiet sure it's ok and if there was some then i guess there was other affect then except of rudder trim issue is that so ?
Yes, a wing warp and balancing would affect roll axis, not yaw one IMHO.
