RE: RCGF Engines
the RCGF 32 is a 34 cc (you can calculate), the RCG from HK is a 30,5 cc. and there is a big difference in power. canister is not a tuned pipe and often the canister is assciated with flexible header whitch produced too much turbulence in the gas flow. so that the supecharging due to the pressure shock wave is drastically reduce near zero. stephane

RE: RCGF Engines
In reply to your questions : I have the RCG 30 and the RCGF 32 and I have compared them. RCG and RCGF are quiet the same indesign. there are some few differences such as the volume svept for exemple : the RCG 30 has got 30.5 cc (bore 36 mm and stroke 30 mm) its power equipped with a tune pipe is quite the same than a ys 170 DZ. the RCGF 32 has got 34cc of volume svept (38mm of bore and stroke = 30mm) you can calculate the result is 34cc and not 32. I have measured the dimension of these 2 engines and it is the results of my measures that i give you. after there are small aspect faults on the RCG compared to the RCGF and it can explan the lower cost of the RCG. if you want only a 30cc and you want to reduce cost you can buy the rcg it will run correctlly. stephane

well, I bought the RCG 30cc at the HK store and a RCGF 32 at the store of the french dealer of RCGF. and I confirm your remark on the packaging. what I think is that RCGF made second choice engine for the chiness market and the first choice is exported. stephane

RE: DLE 30 vs. RCGF 32
hello MTK, I read a great part of your posts on the OS33gt. the problem of power does not concerned the OS 33gt but the use of the hatori header. I explan me: All exhaust chambers ("big muffler") can be tuned and expecially the hatori and for none conical shape the tuned range is very narrow. in the hatori case this header is not tuned and the length is very too small, consequentlly the loss of power can be more than 1000 rpm on the same propeller compared to the correct tuned. in my case I used the tuned pipe of the webra 145 AAR and a self made header : regards stephane

RE: Will YS ever go gas/petrol?
I'm happy of yours reaction and your remarks, thank to A Periera for the measurement of its engine on 19x11 and 20x10,5 APC, and I confirm you that your engine is very powerfull but all I read on RC universe concerning the 170CDi and what I see is just bit lower. In my oponion of Patern pilot is that the power of a good DZ or 2T OS or webra is enough to realized correctly (8 at each manoeuvre) a P11 or a P13 now for example. after it is possible to have more power it gives comfort during piloting but I remember me when I'm a biginner I have problems with to much power too. Now I enjoy explore some ways which are not commun or evident for most of us. As Claude (papone) cheers me I speak you soon of my next F3A plane equipped with a RCGF 32. this plane is almost finish. stephane

RE: Will YS ever go gas/petrol?
hello Keith, about measurement realized on YS engines : I take measurement of rpm that all members of the forum post on RC universe and on F3A.fr. it is interested to see that all measures was realized with APC propellers and it is more simple for me because it reduces drasticlly the number of prop to caracterize in power. for RCGF and webra I used my own measures because I have these engines at homre. after you must know one thing : when your engine runs a prop the power absorbed by the propeller is eqaul to the power provided by the engine, so if you measure the curve power of your prop it becomes easy to determinate the power of all engine just by knowing the dimension of the prop and its rpm. and you can write : where N is the RPM and D the prop diameter and gamma the power coefficient of the prop. after in my case measurement have been done with a good weather and a temperature near 20°C, it is some classicals conditions. the difference that you pointed at 7200rpm is justfied by the difference of the prop sized that they run at this RPM . the 170 cdi run a 20x10.5 and the 170 DZ only the 19x11. in the case of the 19x11 the 170cdi runs this at 7500-7600 rpm. 7700 in the case of CPLR engine. it is interested to see that the 170DZ becomes very powerful up to 8000rpm it is for that reason that the best prop on this engine is the 17x12. for 2T engines differences is not so great and and at low rpm (under 8000rpm) the advantage is for 2T such as OS or Webra. but in their case they arrived so early beacause the best prop for them is 18,1x11 which run at 7600 7700 rpm in fact 200 to 300 rpm faster than the ys170DZ. stephane PS : sorry for my english, I am no native english ;)

RE: Will YS ever go gas/petrol?
hello bjr_93tz I think you stay on a prejudge comming from before the liberalization of the volume svept of the engine in 1996. after it is not the case 2T and 4T have quiet the same volume svept and if they turn the same prop at the same rpm they have got the same power and torque (it is only physics) I collect some measurements that all pepoles post on RC universe and french forum too or I made on RCGF and Webra and after caraterised some propellers in power Il plot some curves. I think there are very interesting :) for the torque for power : sorry curves are in french, for your helps : reso = tuned pipe ; pot echapement = canister ; couple = torque ; puissance = power ; vitesse de rotation = RPM the fuel for the YS engines is 30% of nitro. for the webra 160aar : only 10% of nitro and for the RCGF 32 : gasollin (french SP95) with 3% of oil. these curves demonstrate one thing : there is not only one solution but a set of solution : I explain me : YS is a solution (a very expensive solution) but not the only one; 2T are not died and are good solution for beginners, electrics is an other solution (expensive too) and the future is probably gasoline as show the curves because costs are divided by 3 compared to YS or electrics and power is here ! stephane
ORIGINAL: bjr_93tz A point lost in all this 2-stroke/4-stroke efficiency discussion is that twice in the recent history (last 20 years) of F3A, 2-strokes got dumped very quickly as soon as a decent 4-stroke alternative came along because they turn bigger props at lower RPM and have bottom end grunt. Characteristics I might add forced upon us by the design of the schedules, because a snaproll at the bottom of a loop or on an up-line is a far better way to determine the skill of a pilot than a snaproll in a down-line or at the top of a loop. [;)] Electrics turn even bigger props at even lower RPM with even more bottom end grunt, but like everything there's a happy medium and you just can't keep halving the rpm and doubling the torque without introducing new problems. Two-strokes in a heli are a whole different ball game because they're always up on the pipe, running in their sweet spot waiting for the command to dump their available torque into the gearbox. A geared, constant rpm 2-stroke in an F3A ship with a variable pitch prop would probably work well but it would be a whole new sound for the judges to get used to ???
RE: Will YS ever go gas/petrol?
hi guys, I agree with your demonstration but the formula you give only and your demonstration only allow to compare atmospheric engine between them. you forget a little detail which change all. ;) the YS 4stroke are supercharged and in this case the effective volume of mixture pumped to be burned in the cylender is greater than the volume svept of the engine . in the YS 4stroke engine the supercharging effect is achieve by to systeme : first : it is the rotary valve which produce the overpressure in the cylinder during the pumping but it is not enough secondly : the fuel and especially nitromethane allows to give more oxygen in order to supercharge the engine, it is for that reason that people use 30% of nitro in the fuel for example if you suppress nitromethane in the fuel, there is not any interest to use an YS instead of others engines running without nitro fuel.

Hi Mattk why you don't used a tuned pipe on your OS33gt. the tuned with a good tuning provides about an increase of 500 to 600 rpm but it is not the case with the canister . for exemple I'm runing tests on the RCGF 32 and the using of a tuned pipe on the APC 20x10,5 and the 19x11 allowed me to obtain theses results : regards steph
