Stampede Smoking!
I bought a new Transmission Housing and got it all back together. However after running the truck I noticed that it was smoking and smelled of burned plastic. I'm thinking this might be the norm but just want to verify. My old transmission housing has a circular groove where the slipper pressure rests against it. My slipper clutch isn't extremely tight or anything either. oh yeah, my gears are not meshed too tight either... anyone have a thought on this? Thanks

RE: Vertex VX-18 won't start?
I had tried that as well with no dice. Now my glow start ignitor is dead so it's on the charger. I'm somewhat curious as to if the glow plug that I have is not compatible or something. I went to my local hobby spot and this is pretty much all they carried [image]http://www.runryder.com/fastphoto/35594/os_no7.jpg[/image] I would imagine that this wouldn't be the case. I did however take the carb apart and clean it. Everything looked good. I guess I'll try again here in a little while and update my results.

RE: Vertex VX-18 won't start?
Ok I tried that still nothing. It ran for maybe 5 seconds and died. Can't get it started again

Vertex VX-18 won't start?
I recently sealed the front and back plates of my Vertex .18 engine as well as install a new pull start cord. My glow plug and igniter are good, as well as the piston/piston sleeve 'seal' I read somewhere that the factory settings for the the low and high side ports on the carb are 3 1/2 ccw turns out from the lowest setting. I'm not sure if this is correct? Fuel is primed and I'm even getting good vacuum on the fuel lines. I'm not leaking any fuel anywhere and everything is tight. I sprayed some water with soap on all of the seals on the engine to see if I have any air leaks... which I dont So I'm getting good compression. I also referred to this forum [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5174647/tm.htm]here[/link] for some basic troubleshooting tips. The engine is not even trying to fire. I haven't yet cleaned my carburetor but I am about to try that next I suppose. If anyone has any other suggestions I'll take them... And like I said earlier, Im not sure about these factory carb settings. If anyone could verify, that would be a huge help too. Thanks, Steve

RE: Differential Gear Set Problem?
uhhh I was wrong on that lol. Turns out there is definitely a groove for an eclip. So, I went and got a new one. It's all good now. Everything is staying together. However, I'm on to my next problem. My engine is running great... All of my drivecups are tight and drive shafts are good. Ive got a nice mesh with my spur gear. But when I give it the gas I've got next to nothing as far as speed is concerned. It does roll around at about a 2-5 mph pace but nothing more. If I pick it up off of the ground and go wheels spin like crazy. I think the slipper clutch might be too loose. How tight is this thing supposed to be?

RE: Differential Gear Set Problem?
yeah, there is not a groove there for an eclip so im suspecting one does not go there. I will take some pictures. This assembly is currently installed in the truck right now. I will pull it apart at some point today and post the pictures.

RE: Differential Gear Set Problem?
Yes this came out of a volcano sv and it is most definitely the spur gear setup. I doubt that the gears are supposed to be swapped around as this is a stock picture from redcats website. There was not an eclip but that might explain what is going on if it is the case that there should be one anyway. And yes I took it apart to replace the spur gear. I even watched the how to video. All I know is that this thing is about to get jb welded together if I don't figure something out lol

Differential Gear Set Problem?
So I'm having a slight problem maybe someone knows how to fix it or at least stear me in the right direction. Like I've said before I am a total n00b. I assembled this thing correctly and made sure the pin went into the notch of this little pinion? gear. Nonetheless any help would be a great help.

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread
ahh, I gotcha. Man after looking around on this forum it looks like there are a lot of cats that aren't too thrilled with the redcat product. What's up with that?

RE: Redcat Racing Volcano Thread
I recently purchased a used Volcano SV from a guy. I'm a full on n00b at this stuff so I'm going to ask some silly questions! Nonetheless here's what I got. Engine Leaks fluid like crazy. So I need to do some sealing. Is there a guide to sealing these VX-18 engines? And where else could I be leaking fluid from? My hoses are all good and so is the tank. It most definitely is coming from the engine. I did make my own gasket for the exhaust manifold so that fixed a lot of my problem. Annnd when I full out ran this thing into a tree the other day lol I broke one of the teeth off of the Spur Gear. It looks like this thing had been upgraded to a metal Spur Gear. I need to replace it. But it's looking like the only one that I can find is on Redcat's Website. None of the local Hobby R/C places in Indianapolis carry redcat products... Actually I cant even find a redcat dealer within 150 miles. And there's a considerable price difference between the plastic and metal spur. Here are my questions regarding this. Does the plastic one not hold up? Is there a third party manufacturer of these? Or a subsitute I could use? Or is there any way to just full out change the transmission for lets say a Traxxas tranny? Or something that I have more access to parts to? Like I said I'm a newbie at this stuff so please be gentle. I honestly don't know alot about this thing.

RE: Need help ID'ing Volcano & more
Well, I found it. According to this thread it looks like I have an SV. I guess the STX doesn't have Ball Joint Suspension. However looking at the schematic it looks like all other components are primarily the same. I tore this thing apart yesterday... looks like my front end is good, just need a new dogbone, spur gear, glow plug, plus I need to seal my front/back plates. Then I should be golden.

Need help ID'ing Volcano & more
Hello, I just purchased a used Volcano from a guy. This is a Nitro unit with a VX-18 engine. Im trying to figure out which model of this thing that I have and the differences between the two. Obviously I don't have an S30 as those are equipped with a different/newer engine. I just need to figure out if I have an SV or STX. The only stickers that I have on the body say Volcano. The body is blue/sliver if that helps. I honestly don't know much about this stuff at all... this is my first Nitro RC.... I need a new front end and axel dogbone. I just want to make sure that the parts I get are the right thing.
