if you are taking the steering apart then I highly recomend istalling bearings into the steering assembly. it removed all of my slop and makes it far better. IMHO.
ORIGINAL: savagecommander thats like buying a nw car and never driving it after a tire went flat...
Your statement is flawed. This is like buying a new car and then finding out it's 3 years old and has 40k on the clock and yes you'd probably think twice about buying a car from that seller again. At the end of the day he purchased a new item and was sent a poorly reconditioned unit. Anyone would be upset by this so why not lay off subbass a little. Give subbass a chance to contact Novak and report back. If subbass does not contact them then they are not giving Novak a chance to make right what is obviously a bad mistake. If I was purchasing parts from a company that supplied me with substandard items I'd think twice about buying form then again.. I cannot blame subbass for that. It would be better if you were to state your experience of using Novak rather than just ahve a go at a fellow poster.

Has anyone converted the hex for the wheels to 17mm on a Sparrowhawk XXT? I run a 8th scale car as well and have a load of wheels with 17mm hex's and I may as well make use of them on my XT.

I think you have a prefect right to state in an open forum about your experience with a company.. They have the right to publicly reply if they want to but I agree that you should contact them to get this resolved. Be sure to post after you contact them.

RE: how do i get the rust off?
I'd just pop into your local auto center and get some vehicle rust remover. The one i've used in the past is a green gell containing Phosphoric acid. You just put it onto the rusted area and it converts the rust into Ferric Phosphate. you can either leave this in place or remove with a wire brush. The benefit of this is if you don't get it all off it does not matter as the rust has gone. The alternative of removing the rust by hand is you may leave some on the screws and it will just spread and look bad again in a few weeks.

The new chassis looks like loads of fun. I cannot wait to get my hands on a production model. The pre-production models seem to have the upgraded servos and a higher power ESC. I also like the heavy duty motor fan. I hope these stay in the final product.

RE: Redcat-what's the deal?
I've owned a number of manufacturers cars over the years. I may be new to this site but I have about 5 years experience of 'proper' RC cars. I've owned multiple cars from each of the following manufacturers (Xray, Thunder tiger, HPI, Traxxas, Kyosho and Tamiya). I've never purchased a car without having to go out and purchase upgrades or replacement parts after using them for any period of time. You would not purchase a car in RTR spec and not expect to perform upgrades or replace broken parts. If you do then this really is not the hobby for you. The fact is no manufacturer produces a car that is bullet proof and does not require some changes to get it working as well as it could/should. I currently own a few cars (2x HPI, 1xThunder Tiger and a BSD land Ripper) The Land ripper I own is exactly the same as the Redcat Backdraft 8E. how do I know they are the same? I've actually had both in my hands and bashed them at the same location on the same day. We (the Redcat owner and I) event went to the lengths of weighing them and they were the same weight minus a few gramms. Are redcats any good? Well I think of my BSD as a fun basher. Nothing more. It's nearly complete out of the box (in the UK you don't get te lipo charger and thats a bonus if you ask me). It's also very fast in stock setup. I also have raced it in the 1/8th class at my local rc track. I got 2nd place against cars costing 10x what mine did. Everyone including myself was very shocked at this result. Could it be improved? Yes. I'll include parts and delivered prices in UKP and USD for comparison. The steering has to much slop for me so I changed the steering to use bearings.. Slop gone. cost £1 ($1.60) Motor gets hot when used full throttle for 30 mins.. Solution = Add BSD heatsink and fan. (BS803-029, BS803-030) cost £13 ($20.80) I've also firmed up the suspension with anti rollbars front and back. (BS903-021, BS905-009, 4x BS903-029) Cost £19 ($30.40) Have I broken parts? Yes. I broke the rear suspension mount on a hard landing whilst bashing and replaced it with the alum equiv (MP0-07) cost £9 ($14.40) I also broke a body post (BB701-034) when my 7 year old son accidentaly sat on the car. cost £3 ($4.80) The ESC went up in smoke one day when I was running it hard. This was replaced with no question asked with an upgraded unit. I purchased the car for £195 ($312) from a local hobby store (Sussex Model Center) that is able to supply parts with a 2 day turnaround if they don't have it in stock. I mainly use a company called BlackSmith Products for spares as the prices include delivery and they are normally delivered next day. I use this car most weekends plus the odd extra day and use 2 sets of batteries (3200mah 20C OEM that came with it and a set of 5000mah 50c Turnigy lipos) I've probably run about 50 sets of batteries through it now and the above is all I've had to replace on the car. Parts are very cheap for these cars. Heck the full and complete differentials (BS803-019, BS803-025) costs only £13($20.80) each. I know the plastics don't feel the best but I've had some very bad landings and I've not found them to be any weaker than those from other manufacturers. Where this car needs strength they have fixed at the cost of weight. (Thicker plastic rather than nylon strengthened). My Kyosho buggy has smashed dogbones and wishbones with softer landings. These are cheap cars that come ready to have a great time with. They are not the best but are so simple to work on and parts are far cheaper than competitors parts that I really think unless you are racing them you'd be hard pushed to beat them right now. I'd challenge anyone with a competitors car to state that they have not had to replace parts or purchase bits to complete a car or if they have I bet they cost a heck of a lot more than the Redcats do. Also if you havn't broken parts then you really are not driving the car hard enough. if you really want to see what these cars are capable of then just search for them on Youtube.

Metal Spur gear part number is MP0-016 but it's got fewer teath than the stock so you'd have to adjust the pinion to match.

If they have only been sitting a few months I'd just give them a single 1A discharge and charge as normal. What was the charge like when you left them? I never used to leave mine fully charged.. Always a partial if leaving them for a long time. Now i've moved onto Lipo it's even more important to prep them before storing.

RE: metal Pinion & Spur for Backdraft 8E?
I'd be reluctant to use one. Plastic gears are cheap enough to replace. The plastic is hard enough as long as it's setup properly. Yes it will wear out if if the car is used a huge amount but it does not take long to replace and needs doing so infrequently that it's one area where you don't need to bother upgrading.

RE: How do you clean your Backdraft 8E?
My local discount store sells a range of 4 brushes for next to no money. 2 are wire and the other 2 are plastic.. The plastic are perfect for brushing off the worst of the mud and dirt after a bash. Toothbrushes are ok to but I find the bristles to short. I also use a old rag, canned air and GT85. GT85 is a great product as after the oil dries it leaves a coating of PFTE on the car and stops any dirt from sticking to it. I coat all my new RC cars and parts with it before taking them out. That way most of the dirt just falls away and the rest the air gets rid of.

RE: Thunder Tiger Electric offroad
Thanks. I'm looking at getting some imported as I'll pay about half the rate they are in the UK. After much investigation it looks like mine are from the Tomahawk model and have been adapted to have the thread exposed and a nut rather than a bolt to hold the wheel as it would notmally be. This makes sence as the previous owner converted mine from a Tomahawk to a sparrowhawk. You'd think the nitro parts would be stronger but it looks like it's the other way around. This also explains why there is no difference between the front and rear dogbones. On the nitro the rears are completely different so the previous owner used a second set of fronts for the rears. This may explain the breakage if the lengths are meant to be different. Here is a picture of my car after a major clean and service. As you can cee the speed controller is in an odd place. It has to go here as I've used a 1/8th 80Amp ESC and it's just a little to big to fit lower in the chasses. It hasn't made much difference to the handling and means I can really thrash it.

RE: Thunder Tiger Electric offroad
I'm wondering of someone can help me. As I've stated before I purchased by sparrowhawk second hand from a member on the forum. I broke the bogbone part of hte CVT a few weeks ago and replace it fomr the spares box. I broke another last week and again repllaced it but the new one is slightly bent. The next day I broke the wheel side of the CVT. The manual states the CVT's are PD9204 and PD9205 however these are not the ones I have. It looks like the previous owner replaced the CVT with non standard ones. I quite like them so can anyone identify what part they are or am I best replacing the lot with new originals? This will be quite costly as I'll need to buy new Hex spacers as well as the ones I have have no holes for the pins. These are the parts I have on my car if anyone can identify them. Thunder Tiger hub Thunder Tiger Hub I'm a little suprised at how easily some of these parts broke. I'm running the car with standard gearing with a Dynamite C4 4600kv motor, HSP 80Amp ESC and a 2S8P Lipo battery (Yes 2S 8P) The car managed to break these metal parts whilst racing full speed on a level grass surface. I can either think that they were brittle or there is just to much power running through the drivetrain. Also does anyone know what the difference is between the front and rear ones as on mine they are both the same length. The bogbone part seems to be a weak point so I'd like to get a few. Does anyone knoe if there are others in the range that will fit as the ones for the XT seem to be the most expensive. Any help would be appreciated.

Teflon tape is great for tightening up the ball cups. (We call it PFTE in the UK) :) I thought mine was ok. then I read about the tape on the forum and it really made a difference without putting much of a load on the servo. highly recomended.
