RE: Scaled Tiporare Plans
ORIGINAL: doxilia Stiletto, She's a real beauty! Finally, we've come across someone who's built a wood fuse per the plans! You've got to finish her, BPA or not. What is the actual scale (wing span) in inches? Did you build it for trikes or tail dragger? Retracts? What power plant did you have in mind - 2c 1.20-1.40? or 4c 1.70? Any pictures, notes and/or tips that you could provide on the construction sequence would be much appreciated by all. Don, from Eureka, is also looking for information regarding the fin construction. Since yours is finished it will be hard to show the innards but perhaps you could enlighten with some comments. Also, any thoughts on the fin LE? Does my fin construction sequence description above sound similar to what you did?
Thanks! I ended up treating the sides of the fin as an extension of the fuse sides. I used a huge piece of soft balsa glued to the front of the fin and carved it to match the top block of the fuselage. It's a little bit more blunt than the great planes mold, which has a bit sharper leading edge. I was actually imagining a OS 1.60 with the exhaust running under the wing. I always thought the exposed engine was attractive. It's built for trike gear. The wingspan was clipped down to 78" after scaling up the fuse to 78". Supposedly the later tipos had started to evolve shorter wings. The thing still has 1180 sq in of wing area though! The nose is really hard to carve and shape correctly. It still needs quite a bit of contouring and refinement to get where it needs to be. I started by gluing all three soft balsa sheets together right in place over the nose, then band sawing out the side contour after tracing the shape from the plans. Then it was a matter of using a long carving x-acto blade to get the rest of the rounded shapes. The side tucks aren't completely in yet, and I'm not sure how I'm going to get them to come out perfectly sharp and clean on both sides like the Great Planes fuselage.

RE: Scaled Tiporare Plans
Check out the "Tipo Max"... a 2M by 2M version that I had started when I had wanted to get back into AMA pattern. It went on permanent hold when I learned about the BPA.

RE: FK SBA 60 Speeda - Build
So polyester resin can bond to the epoxy fuselage? You really ought to have a photograph made of both the Blue Angel and the Speeda side by side and get it on the cover of Model Aviation. It's probably a lot harder to find craftsmanship like that these days.

RE: some old pictures
No, the only thing I might still have is the wing from the curare, but it's simply too heavy to be of any use. The Kaos had a mid-air, the Curare did a cartwheel, and the Calypso was thrown away.

RE: Starting the BPA
That's good... are we going to fly a pattern? I think the best way to start is to simply advertise and run a contest sometime in the future that's non-turnaround. No need to emphasize the use of pipes or retracts, they will be used by the competitors that like them. stiletto660 currently also building an Illusion 60 as well as a 2-meter Tiporare project.[;)]

RE: some old pictures
Thanks for the compliments. The Fox came from my control line days. It had an unbelievable response to a tuned pipe... I don't think Mr Fox had planned on that. Casniffer, I hope you don't use any of the pictures with my "mullet" on the image base. It would be a bit embarassing. You know, the Calypso had very little side area, and had a tiny vertical fin and rudder. I don't know why, I guess it fit with Hanno's flying style.

some old pictures
I managed to dig up a few old pictures from a family photo album that I thought I would share... since we all like pictures. The first one is a Super Kaos 40 that I got as a gift from my dad. He observed how I always kept staring at this particular kit at the hobby shop, and surprised me with it one afternoon in the garage! It was my first low-wing airplane right after my Telemaster. I think I was around 15 at the time. I thought it was strange how they used machine screws to bolt the wing on. Powered by a Fox .40. Next is a Quality Line Curare that was my first attempt at a fiberglass plane. It had Rhom-air retracts and mag wheels, it also weighed at least 11 lbs... strangely enough, it flew fairly well as long as it was going fast. We clocked it at 140 mph with a cop's radar gun. Powered by a Super Tigre .61. These pics were taken out at the Eglin Aeromodellers field in Florida, and I got a chance to meet Ron Van Putte (who I admired at the time due to his column in Model Aviation). Next is a Calypso. I think I was around 18 at the time, and was obsessed with Hanno and his Supra Star. I tried to replicate the trim scheme. I never clocked this one, but it certainly felt just as fast, if not faster than the Curare.

RE: Blue Angel - Build
Yeah, how do you cut the monokote at just the right shape and outline without cutting into the sheeting? Do you cut it out when it's flat on the table and position it just right? Where did you get the Blue Angel decal?

RE: my old glass fuse
Man, that carbon fiber tow is a great idea... it's just what I needed as I couldn't figure out how to shape something to the curvature of the inside of the fuselage. There aren't any bulkheads other than the firewall in this kit.

my old glass fuse
Any tips for stiffening a fiberglass fuse? This is an old Illusion that I had bought way back in 1992, I think. I'm sensing quite a bit of flexibilty in the fuselage as I grab it with my hand and squeeze, as well as trying to twist the fuse behind the wing saddle. I also am getting a little scared about the wing sheeting after the "Aurora incident" a few days ago on this board. I'm pretty sure these were sheeted back in 92 with sorghum. I'm wondering what to do about that... and avoid a catasrophic failure.

RE: Big Dirty Birdy
This is my 2+2 Dirty Birdy that I had started a while back as my re-enrty into the hobby. The problem is, I had built in a slight twist into the fuselage during construction. I thought you might want to see it before I throw it in the dumpster here shortly. I used several 1/4" ply plates in the wings and nose to mount the retracts. I think Bridi was intending the builder to imagine his own installation based on their own experience.

RE: Tuned Pipes
My question - my Macs header is curved at 90 degrees. This is too much of a curve. Is there a safe way to bend the aluminum header back without damaging it?
I think you're wanting a "long radius" type of header that is used on Curares to get it comfortably under the wing... the normal bend on a side exhaust header would probably run the pipe into the wing. Am I imagining your problem correctly?

Whatever happened to that historical database idea that was floated about earlier? With all of these plans suddenly available for download, I think it would be great to have not only info about planes and pilots, but have some historical plans available as well.

RE: F-8 Crusader build
As of right now, there is a 1.20 engine limit in BPA, so I think I'll be fine. I don't think they're really that strict right now, they're trying to be really inclusive.

RE: F-8 Crusader build
It's definately a big plane. The fuselage rivals a 2-meter plane in length, but it's of course much thinner and more aerodynamic. The reason I'm glassing everything is for the nice appearance and hardness of the finish. Growing up at the local flying field, a painted plane was the sign of an "expert", and I admit that I'm still swayed by this line of thinking. I haven't weighed it yet, but I'm guesstimating it at finishing around 10 pounds. I imagine if this was a pre-1996 plane, it would be one of those supercharged 1.20 types, but I have no experience with a 4 stroke. I was thinking about revving up a 91 with some extreme rpm and getting some good performance that way.

I really shot on the primer thick, then sanded all of it off. I'll do this again for a second time. I couldn't help thinking of "Firefox" when looking at the flat black airframe.

I started the process by sanding the resin with some 100 grit to get the sheen off, and to level the surface.

RE: F-8 Crusader build
Thanks, here's a few more views showing how the overall lines are looking. I noticed that there is a slippery residue on top of this Z-Poxy finishing resin... I'm wondering if I should clean off the surface before I start sanding.

I've got the whole thing covered with 2 coats of resin now, and unfortunately the next step is going to require a lot of elbow grease. I've got a shot here of the whole unit so you could see how the proportions are shaping up.
