RE: Twin engines uneven compression Magnum
there is no obstruction inside the manifold and this engine alternates on the intake strokes so its not like one side is sucking more causing the other to starve. I've read lots of postings here and pretty much everybody is having this problem. Like I said Im hoping to get the temps. closer when I use one hot and one super hot glow plug. if that doesnt work, im going to do a twin carb set-up however, I dont know where to start. What kind of carb can I use and how to do the adjustable linkages on it? Do you guys know of anyone who has done this on a magnum 160 or an os 160?

RE: Twin engines uneven compression Magnum
I have changed out the right side, sleeve, piston and ring. Now slightly more compression than the left side. right now its running 18x6 at 7700 rpm and 16x8 at 8200 rpm. I will go ahead and replace the left side sleeve piston and ring and try to get more out of it. Im still upset at the fact that right side still smokes less (leaner) after a 10 min run, right head reaches 179f while left side is around 135f which is a huge difference imo. im thinking about using a hotter glow plug on the left side hoping to burn more. What is the hottest 4 stroke plug can i use other than OS F? also, right head valve lash is adjusted to .20mm and left side is at .04mm. trying to compensate for the lean condition.

RE: Twin engines uneven compression Magnum
after a 3 weeks vacation to northern california im finally back. so here is the latest update. I ran the magnum today. I got it to idle around 1600rpm w/o glow. with glow It idles around 1400rpm. and full throttle I can get it to run around 7000rpm with a 18x6 prop using %15 nitro with castor. These numbers are with the high speed needle 2.5 turns out. when I set it to 2.0 turns out it does 7400rpm. Im waiting on some parts from china since globalhobby doesnt have the parts I need. I will do a complete rebuild on the right side. hoping it will get better if not im still planning to use it. I love the sound of this thing.

Thats the thing, I just mounted on a bench. it runs good. idles around 1500 and turns 18x6 prop at 6500rpm. what do you guys think? is 18x6 at 6500 is a low or a good value. high needle is about 2.5 turns out. should i just leave it the way it is?

RE: Twin engines uneven compression Magnum
I will try measuring while the piston is at TDC. (one is at TDC for combustion and the other is at TDC of exhaust or vice versa. I will try that this evening. if they measure the same , i don't know what else to do. thinking about drilling a glow plug to make a custom leak down tester. My wife has a nice dermabrasion kit, which does have a vacuum pump with a gauge that goes up to 50psi, this should help me a little bit. Before I do this, I need to get rid of her for a day. if she sees her kit is all custom fitted to an rc engine project she will go nuts. I will let you know, how it goes.

RE: Twin engines uneven compression Magnum
Thanks for all the replies and ideas. I was away for couple of days but now im back. Below is a list of what I did. Relapped the valves with a toothpaste. put them back on same results. moved the valves around, right side to left side. still low compression on right side. moved the pistons, rings, liners around. Same results. then removed the valves and replaced the order intake to exhaust, and then move the heads around. still the same results. Even moved the valve train around with same results. Moved all the suspected o rings and head gaskets nothing is helping. I didnt see any change on the compression. Im thinking , my right side piston rod is maybe a mm or 2 short causing less compression. Interesting thing is, when I suck on the exhaust and then place my tongue on it ( i know it sounds weird) the amount of suction can hang that engine from the tip of my tongue and it wont let go for at least 10 seconds, this is the same for all valves . this is how I checked all the valves to see if they seal properly. When I picked this engine up last year from rc universe market, it was the same. a year later im still tackling the same problem. I think i would be better off spending that $400 on a used OS instead.

Twin engines uneven compression Magnum
Hey guys i have a question for twin 4 stroke guys. my magnum 160ft still breaking in, feels like it has a low compression on right side looking from back plate. Right side has less smoke coming out, almost same amount of oil as the left side. while cranking by hand I can feel a hard stroke and next stroke is definetely easier. Should I be worried or should I keep breaking it in and hope it will get better.

RE: Banking turns on Heli
When I was commenting about my turns I said I use mostly rudder and some opposite aileron. I didn't say anything about starting the turn with rudder or using opposite rudder. Read carefully. In aerobatic air frame if you want to make level turns you will end up giving opposite aileron because of large control surfaces. I asked for opinions and said any input will be appreciated but here you come along start talking with a attitude. I didn't ask you anything about sims but you started commenting about my preference. It doesn't take much to be a real help instead of being a real pain in the azz. I'm done talking to you.

RE: Banking turns on Heli
First of all, I do own Phoenix v3 , real flight 5 and aerofly 5.5, maybe you don't but I know there are thousand of people out there who agree that sims are not like the real feeling. You are talking about coordinated turns but you still don't know,, in a banking turn if you add some rudder in the same direction you will bring that plane down. I dont know what plane you own that can handle same direction of rudder and aileron. My 100cc sbach or 50cc decathlon can't pull turns like that not even my electric eflite sukhoi su26m and these planes are what you call extra type of aircraft.

Banking turns on Heli
Can someone explain me a little bit about banking turns on heli? I usually fly planes , recently I bought this exi 450 pro , now I am in the process of learning. im not using a sim because real life and sim are totally different. I can hover all day long, so no problem there. When I start flying I can only go forward and then start hovering and then turn the heli 180 degrees then go forward again. Im wondering how can I make banking turns on a heli? On planes I usually use rudder and some opposite aileron to make turns or just bank it and pull on elevator. on heli should I bank it the same side as the rudder input and then apply some back elevator or what? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Unwanted drift on exi 450 pro with belt
Im learning to hover and the problem I am having is; on a level hover heli starts drifting away which is normal (wind or floating effect from the blades) however when I control it with cyclic I notice giving right cyclic drifts the heli backwards with a minimal yaw to the right. so lets say I am trying to move the heli from one point to another 15 feet away to its right side I have to fight the thing to get it there its always going back and forth with minimal travel to right side. Is this normal? my Swash mix are set 50% on pitch, aileron and elevator. Exponential on aileron and elevator at 50%. at mid stick I have zero pitch and 60% throttle. Maximum pitch is set to -+9 degrees. even on while its hovering perfectly giving it right cyclic moves it back and right. Left cyclic is normal. any ideas?

Building my first heli EXI 450 Pro, need some advises.
Ok guys Im building my first heli. Its a exi 450 pro. I do have a question. When I am setting up the swash plate, Should I set the servos so that, on low throttle I have negative pitch and at mid throttle zero pitch and over half throttle positive pitch. I really appreciate any input on this matter. Or since I am a beginner should I just go ahead and set zero pitch at low throttle and as the throttle goes up pitch goes up I was thinking this way I dont need too much of head speed to lift off or am I wrong on this one?. I dont even know how to fly it yet so I dont think I will use a negative pitch for up side down flight. ( that is what the negative pitch is used for right?)

RE: Fliton Extra 260 Mini CG help needed.
Yesterday I removed the cowl, yanked off all the weight and removed the wings, marked lines between 2.30 to 3.30 on upper surfaces. Put everything back together and chech the CG and it's right at 3.25 so I guess this will do the trick. Now I know this plane doesn't balance at 2.30.

RE: Fliton Extra 260 Mini CG help needed.
Well yesterday was the maiden flight. Plane flies like a brick. I had to add lead weight to counter balance it, I think Its a little nose heavy now. The problem I am having is, advised ready to fly weight should be 25 to 27 ounces. which is what I came up with, without adding weight however, no matter where I place the lipo, plane was always tail heavy when I hold it on my two fingers on advised distance from the LE, 2.30 to 3.30 inches didnt make a difference. So I added weight and lots of them. It balanced right but now it weighs 32 ounces. I think Its a little too much for a 41'' wing span 3d plane. it flies but nose sinks in on level flight on half throttle. when I play with trim to fix that, I had to click it so many times and plane starts acting weird like a little up elevator input makes the plane go vertical or all of a sudden one wing drops. So i know Its too heavy right now. I have to get rid of the weight and get a bigger motor to use as a weight. Which is not going to be a dead weight at least. What do you think?

RE: Magnum ft160 twin running lean on one side
I agree with all of you guys. restricting the left side will only put more stress on the right side which already is running lean. I am going to check on the o rings and maybe apply some gasket maker silicone on the right side intake manifold and some teflon on the cylinder head connection. I was thinking about checking the valve clearence. Im gonna get a feeler gauge tomorrow and see, readjust it maybe. If it still runs the same way, I guess I go ahead and start messing with the heads and jugs.

Magnum ft160 twin running lean on one side
What can I do to fix this problem? I'm in the process of breaking in, I don't want to run the engine any longer because left side piston has a noticable white smoke but right side doesn't. No matter how rich I run there is no white smoke coming out. I know both pistons are firing but right side is extremely lean. Right side intake manifold is a little longer and I think that's causing some kind of drop int he manifold pressure and causing the piston to suck less mixture than the other side. I am thinking about building some kind of a ring to block the left piston's air fuel mixture to compensate. Less mixture going to left intake manifold means a leaner condition am I right on this? Im not very knowledgeable about engines, so any advises or ideas will be appreciated.

RE: Aurora 9 lock up and crash
Last summer I lost two planes because of a 9cap with spectrum 2.4 on it. first plane was my Phoenix p51 and second was Giles 202. First I thought it was pilot error so I built a Giles 202. Everything was fine with maiden however second flight I watched my $500 go down in front of me on full throttle. Just put it on eBay for parts and bought a aurora 9. Im building a pilot rc decathlon 40% and I will use my aurora 9 with telemetry. Should I complain to futaba or spectrum? I lost about $1000 combined in two planes. Futaba 9cap and spectrum dm8 is not even included. Sorry for misspelling I'm using a iPhone and it's hard to type.

RE: Broken Elevator, Need some advises.
Elevator is balsa. Hinges are like those little paper kind of hinges. Control surfaces were ok, the problem was the non moving elevator stab. That piece just broke in half, elevator control surfaces werent damaged at all. I will try to get some photos today. I used some CA and put it back together. It looks like its holding good, couple of violent shake didnt break it, I am still afraid to use it however. I already cut a new elevator stab from balsa its just 1mm thicker than the original. It weighs 2 grams more than the original after cutting it and gluing it together. but, it feels a lot sturdier also. I temporarily mounted it on the plane and I could lift the 6 lbs plane holding it from the elevator stab only. So I think I will go with the new one I built. Im still trying to cover it without wrinkles which seems impossible. any ideas on wrinkles? using monocote from eflite. Their instructions are useless, if I go with their instuctions my plane will look older than my grand ma.

Broken Elevator, Need some advises.
Last sunday, I had a bad landing that broke my elevator in two pieces. Main frame that goes around the LE and TE just broke off. Should I go ahead and use some CA and put it back together or should I use the old one to draw a new diagram and build a new one from balsa. Plane is a 40 size cap 232 from texasrcplanes.com. I never had to deal with small repairs like this one. Most of the time my crashes wouldnt even leave a single salvageable piece, so I would buy a new ARF kit. but this time I have to do some repairs because I really like this plane. RE: Magnum engines?
I just got home from crashing my Phoenix strega with .52 magnum 4 stroke. I dont know what I was thinking, Took off with 17mph winds gusting to 35mph. Plane took off fine but a strong gust kept drifting it and couldnt bring it back and finally it nose dived in to the ground. In a 400 acre grass ranch I managed to crash it on a concrete pavement about 15 feet in lenght. It took me about an hour to reach where the plane was at. Going over the fences and asking the land owners to go through and stuff. Anyway, Phoenix strega is completely gone there is not one salvageable piece on it other than .52 magnum. I was hoping the magnum would be ok but on the other hand it was a straight nose dive, I dont know how magnum survived that, Motor mount was also in 3 pieces. but, motor broke off the mount as a whole and broke the prop and spinner and crank shaft threads look stripped (easy fix) I will try to start it later today and see if it runs. This should give you an idea of what I think about Magnum.
