RE: need roll pin for K&B
ORIGINAL: earlwb When I first saw the thread I was thinking about this engine here that I have. It uses a small roll pin and a set screw on the drive washer. I had forgotten about the rear intake engines you depicted.
yes they did use the smaller pin............bearing changes are tricky with the way K&B did the front ends, and the 40S is no different except they went to a larger pin since the shaft became 3/8" OD from rear to front. i also have several of these 40RR's which are going to become popular with FF events in the "slow gas" event. same pin as your FR...........

RE: need roll pin for K&B
a couple internal differences as well..........rotor is supported by a bearing, rod is machined instead of the cast that were used in the production series.

RE: need roll pin for K&B
the 3/32" roll pin as used on the K&B 40-S is/was easy to find. the trick is to drill thru the driveplate/crankshaft......... i'll upload a pic later tonight. this one is of but a very few that John Brodbeck did up for a select few...the one i have is from Joe Bridi's collection that John gave him. i really appreciate all the input from you guys. nothing more fun than to BS about engines.

RE: OK fuel guru's....here is a tuff one
ORIGINAL: hauckf
ORIGINAL: JCINTEXAS Pour 12 ounces of nitro into 88 ounces of your original fuel = 100 ounces of new mix at 25% nitro and 22% oil
I think that will only get the nitro to about 21%, not 25%. To get to 25% nitro, pour 16.7 oz nitro into 83.3 oz of the original fuel. The resulting 100 oz of fuel will have 25% nitro and about 21% oil. Or, just pour 25.6 oz of nitro into a gallon of the original fuel to get the same result. (I think JC used 15% nitro in the original fuel in his calculation, not 10%)
hauckf, thx for the formula. appreciate that you understand what i am using and trying to modify.............i'll juice up a quart first and if that works then i'm set. worst case scenario- BUY NEW FUEL[:D] and give the 10% stuff away...... thx -mike

RE: OK fuel guru's....here is a tuff one
i would like to keep the oil percentage at no less than 20%. the fuel was originally bought for use in a couple older RC engines that were designed to be run on castor oil fuels with minimum 25% oil. the conrods are non bushed and would die with synthetic oiled fuels. the engine i want to run this fuel in now is the K&B 40RR from the late 60's which also have non bushed conrods.

OK fuel guru's....here is a tuff one
then again maybe not........... fuel in my stock is Sig all castor fuel. 25% oil, and 10% nitro content. need to bring it up to 25% by aqdding Nitro, but i'm not sure what the amount to add would be? why fool with it and not simply buy more you might say.........i have 4 gallons of this and don't want to toss it if i can make it work.

RE: RC Plane Guys Are Cheap!
OH MAN! talk about hitting the nail on the head.................you are so right my friends.............i recently vacated the RC hobby in favor of returning to Free Flight Gas competition. for thos of you who don't know what that is, it's like being in Pylon racing..........everything is a specialty item right down to the competitor making his own FG/CF props. etc. anyways i was lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar for all my stuff, and i have been building for over 45 years. the kicker was the 10 gallons of Power Master 15% fuel i was trying to sell to the local guys.............even at $5.00 a gallon, no takers. i finally sold it to a guy who bought the last plane i had and he was from another area. when i told him what i was asking he snickered.....said "nope".........i'll give you 10 bucks per..................acutally i sold nothing to the local guys either.......even had a NIB OS 160 twin with NIB Keleo exhaust.........went for 400 bucks to someone from out of town although one local club member offered 250.00....................if i ever get back into RC, it won't be with the RC Airplane fraternity............

RE: Kudos to Horizon....but Tower just
ORIGINAL: flyinwalenda I think with today's ''modern skills'' folks have forgot how to be patient . I would think those folks who complain about lack of instant gratification would be more likely to treat a newbie like ''dirt'' due to them not ''getting it'' as quickly as someone else thinks they should. Sit back, take a breath, and relax. Don't let something as trivial as this ruin your day. While I ship things I sell as quickly as I can(never the same day), I could care less if someone or some company takes a day or two or three to ship .
talk about "not getting it".............you missed the whole point. i could careless how long either vendor takes to "pick and pack".........................i said (and let me be very clear) that Horizon is top notch in getting an order processed and out the door. i did NOT SAY that i was upset or in a hurry.................i DID SAY that Tower on the other hand takes a lot longer to process ones order when it is being handled under their "FREE SHIPPING" per 100 bucks spent, but will ship immediately if one pays for the upgraded shipping.....how can they do it faster, becuase now you are paying for the shipping probably........... i never go online and pay more for shipping than necessary, and i never give much thought to the order once placed, only to check what i receive when i do receive. i merely posted a KUDOS to Horizon as they seem to think shipping an order immediatley is important to their customers who have just spent money with them..................did i miss anything here?...................or do you still not get it? this is what i mean as well as people who posted other than what is concerned here in an attempt to point out that I am impatient. god, why did i even bother logging in here................

You were thrilled when it came in 5 weeks Now we complain if it isn't here within a week,, We're so very spoiled now
spoiled?.................you think taking 3 days to pick and pack one item is cool with todays modern skills?..............[8|] but in Tower's defense, if you pay the extra to have 2nd day shipping (cuz you really gotta have it) it only takes a few hours for them to do the job............all i'm saying is why is it that in this day and age, in this economy where customers matter, does it take one supplier less than a day to take care of someone, while the other just takes their sweet time when it's on their dime. both advertise "free" shipping when spending more than a 100 bucks. but as usual, some of you just have to imply that we're spoiled and impatient................kinda what RCU is famous for tho. bet you are the same guys that make newbies feel like dirt when they join your club too.

Kudos to Horizon....but Tower just
i have placed 3 different orders with Horizon in the past 2 weeks.......i just had to say Kudos to them as each one was processed and shipped within 4 hours of placing........this is how things should be done for us modelers who support them by buying from them. i wish i could say the same for the once powerful and mighty Tower, but the last 2 orders i placed with them has been the slowest service i have ever seen ....72 hours to process and ship?........c'mon Tower, you can do better[;)]

My condolences to the family. i came back to modeling in 2007 after being away for 15 years, and the first person to jump in to help me with what was, and what was to be avoided was none other than Minnflyer. have exchanged many many PM's between each other and Mike always took the time to answer. truly a Modeler that enjoyed helping other Modelers, and will be sorely missed.....................Thermals to you Mike...............we'll miss you.

RE: Need help with prop tracking...
ORIGINAL: on_your_six I would never use a long tapered prop reamer or any other for that matter. I use a drill press and the proper sized drill steel to match the engine's shaft size. I have the proper tool, so I use it... I have heard that drill presses can be used for other things too! Maybe you could use a jack hammer to drive some finishing nails?
ORIGINAL: tacx This site is starting to ps me off. I type a post for 5 mins and add a photo and it gets timed out!!!! I'll try again. Mustangman, You need a reamer that has a very narrow taper. Just any reamer won't work. You will take off to much material. I got mine from my LHS. Here is their info and a pic of the one I have. RE: Need help with prop tracking...
ORIGINAL: tacx Summerwind... All good info, but you are referring to checking the engine drive washer and shaft. I think we are mostly discussing the prop. If you have a prop that has a rear hub surface that is not perfectly parallel to the prop blades then that prop is not going to track correctly. The only way one can check a prop for tracking is to use a prop. I understand the fact

RE: Need help with prop tracking...
ORIGINAL: jetblast96
ORIGINAL: Hobbsy ...notorious for having the hole drilled crooked through them.
Should I not use APC on my airplanes then? The only reason I'm checking prop tracking is to get a smoother running plane without all the massive vibrations that I've been experiencing. I have no doubt that my drive washers and crankshafts are straight; these engines have not been crashed and the Saito has only been run twice on the bench; otherwise factory new. Should I switch to a different propeller and try again? Thanks for the replies Mike
are you serious?..................it's not the hole even though that is the obvious suspect. you need to make sure the back of the prop hub is true first. any prop can be off, and you need to learn how to check that first........but still, using a prop to check for tracking is pointless whether it's reamed out correctly or not.............when you tighten a prop down it has no choice but to sit flat on the drive washer does it not?...........
