RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
I was thinking of asking if they could change back to the white stuff. Of course I already know that answer is gonna be no[:D] Kinda like when I complained to my pharmacy computer vendor about how the system worked and was told they wouldn't rewrite the entire program just for me.[:D] Eddie

Not yet, I was hoping someone else had the answer , I just found the problem and thought it was an isolated one. NOW I see I'm not the only person to receive the "new" sheathing. Dissapointing. I am very happy I had a set of the older white stuff left to use this time [:D] Eddie

RE: Black Magic VF3 Build Thread
CST has obviously changed the teflon sheathing. I just installed a DEPS in my new plane using a set from CST that I had purchased a couple of years ago. The sheathing was a white color , straight in the package ( not coiled up) and what I received when I reordered, to have more on hand for the future, is transparent and came coiled like you guys are saying. I didn't check the ID but the new stuff's OD is defiitely thinner than the old. Eddie

Just received the latest gear from Graph Tech. Base is 1-1/2 in wide, otherwise same dimensions as before BUT with lighter carbon thus a uncut and undrilled weight of 132gm looks very nice. Still 9 inches rise.

Yep Another way to say it is : Push The Tail the direction it needs to go ( same as moving the wing) When one wing is low the tail will be offset, so either thought process will work. Which ever one you can remember until it becomes instinctive. At what point it becomes instintive - Uh I don't know yet!! [:D] Eddie

mtcarey You have come up with the "perfect" propulsion system for us. Note I didn't use the words "motor" or "engine"[:D] It has the features from IC that has prevented some from trying electric in the past : -a carb to fiddle with - an exhaust system to maintain & clean up Hopefully with the benefit of the consistency and instant power of electric (this you'll need to report back and let us know how good it performs). RE: Kevlar pull pull for elevators ?
I have done pull-pull elevators with nylon coated kevlar. It doesn't stretch. once you tighten it , you don't have to do anything for a very long time. Except for my first time I didn't get a ferrule crimped completely and the line slipped OOPs!!! be sure to get your geometry correct. most everyone knows to have your clevis-control horn at the elevators on the hinge line. it simplifies everything. if you miss a little and get a little slack on the non pulling side, it is not a big problem as the other side is carrying all the force. just try to have both slack sides have about the same tension(looseness). I like the cable tight enough to actually give a reasonance like a guitar string but a low note not a super high "tight" one :-) If your plane already has the openings for it I would definetly do it & not give it a second thought. Locating the exit holes on a prebuilt plane is the hardest work. Make sure your distance across the control arm at the servo is the same as the distance from one control horn to the other one across the elevator half. This will give you sqaure geometry and good tension on the lines. Aerospace composite products has Kevcord(nylon coated kevlar) and really cool kevcord connectors that you run the cord through & just tie a knot in the cord and pull it tight. This connector screws into the clevis of choice. Don't get real hung up on hte servo on it's side versus upright. It will work either way. Just remember a cable from one side of the servo goes to the same side of each elevator half. I hope I'm not offending you here - this is a really simple part BUT sometimes the easiest part gets confusing I hope this helps eddie

RE: USA AMA NSRCA Pattern Nats Muncie Indiana
Mathew and I belong to the same rc club, LARKS in Sulphur Louisiana. The only time he showed up at LARKS this year , he flew 3 flights with his passport and spent the rest of the day watching one of his mentors practicing full scale routines about 2 miles east of our runway. There is a full scale airport about 4 miles east of us ( We were here first [;)] ) Now Mathew flew 2 contests in the begining level of full scale , placing second in one of those two, but moved up a level in his third contest. For a young man his age to be doing it for real and well - I'm impressed and Mathew I wish you all the best and I'll be watching [:D] Who knows if he hadn't been routinely watching a Sukhoi, Extra and Pitts Special doing full scale aerobatics almost over head , he may have stayed in RC and be giving Brett some competetion in a few years. Matt - sorry to see your resignation but I hope to see you at LARKS to fly a little RC for fun sometime. Eddie

RE: Need suggestions for first pattern plane up to $500 ARF
I just now found this on sale at chief aircraft. If I was looking for a 90 size I'd jump on it for the price. Hyperion Katana F3A 90E ARF The Katana F3a is tagged with the "90e" designation, which indicates the size of the model would suit .90ci two-cycle or 1.20 ci four-cycle engines, but that this model is all-electric. Length: 67.86 inches Wingspan: 67.0 inches Wing Area: 762.6 sq in Weight: 7.4~7.9 lbs Katana F3A 90e ARF - $249.95* i looks like a crossover plane with larger control surfaces but for $249.95 you could afford good quality servos( recomeneded anyway) and dial them down. eddie

Tomasina I have a Tweedy Bird I purchased new in 1981. Finally built it about 5 years ago and flew it with an Irvine25 on a pipe. I think the Eflite 32 would be a good choice. Don't have any experience with prop size on it for E power but I don't see how you'll ever be happy with na E powered Tweedy Bird with out longer gear. convert it to taildragger and longer mains. as for the ribs I still have my plans, although they are in 25years old shape. i will attempt to copy the rib pattern for you. eddie

RE: Carbon tubes/rods for landing gear
I talked to Nat several years ago about the set-up and I wrote about it in the KFactor. The set-up is the lightest you can get. Don't forget that the ply discs are the mounts so there is no additional weight found in the fuse or anywhere else. If style is what you want, do the fairings that Eddie mentioned. If that isn't good enough for you, then ca some balsa planks on either side and shape that to an airfoiled section. Then epoxy carbon cloth around the balsa/carbon tube assembly, and vacuum bag it. Heavier for sure but as stylish as the expensive carbon gear....more than that, you can brag to your buddies that you made it. BTW, that's how I build my landing gear for my 2 meter designs MattK
Matt The fairings do more than add style and Nat has always used them. If you just use the tubes without any fairing you'll get a harmonic vibration that you can not only hear but actually see in the air. Since the mount is only a hole through the wing with ply discs on top and bottom, constant vibration could possilby cause some unnecessary wear. Besides the noise is unacceptable on a pattern plane[;)] You are correct about the length and flex but I would word it slightly different. Adjust the size of tubing and corresponding legth of tubing to provide some flex, which helps make for easier landings. The reason I said this above is the shorter legs on Nat's VooDoo Express are a good bit shorter than the legs on his VE 3D but both work great. I didn't want someone to think the really long legs on his VD3D are required for the system to work. My tubes on my UltraRC Evolution are Fuse mounted and have never broken. I have broken the fueslage ona bad landing and had to reinforce it, but the carbon tubes didn't break.

RE: Cellpro 10 balancing adapter warning
ORIGINAL: KeithB This weekend I ruined a $550 battery due to a simple mistake when using the Cellpro 10 with a Thunder Power 10s Extreme. I felt compelled to share this experiance to help others avoid this easy to make, but costly mistake. This post is not a slam of the Cellpro because otherwise I've been extremely happy with the charger, however, I do feel strongly that the design of the balancing adapter should either have one plug for 5s/4s, or some other method to help avoid this. Certinally having the plugs right next to each other is a bad idea. Note, in my case I was using the Thunder Power adapter, but looking at the other adapter sockets I believe this could happen with other brands of batteries as well. The attached image details the problem.
I have just recently started using the cellpro 10s BUT I've been woried about all those pins sticking out and had planned to cover them somehow. I like the idea of depron plugs and will use it - BUT Thanks Keith for the warning as I had not noticed the 4s & 5s plugs being the same. Also I just lost my best(newest) set of Flight Power F3A packs due to a crash of my new plane. I want to give flightpowerusa credit as they too offered replacements at 50% off.
