RE: Are the Evolution engines reliable?
I've had 2 61NX's and both failed. While the ran, they ran very well indeed. For about 3 seasons. Then they just pooped out. Both engines failed in the exact same way. They would start and idle just fine, however they would make an odd sucking sound and die when opening the throttle. New carbs didn't help. Glow plugs, nope. Needle Valves, nope. I wound up sending them both back to Horizon and they pronounced them DOA. I have two 46's that have been doing just fine now for at least 4 seasons, but they're in trainers and don't get quite the same level of abuse as the 61's which were in my Tiger 60s. TomC

Mystery Motor, Can you ID?
Found this at Estate Sale, have no idea what it is. The only identifying markings are a 12 on one side and some kind of logo on the other that looks like a slanted "M". It runs like a scalded ape. ;-) What the heck is it? TomC Folsom CA

Having a very hard locating a couple of prop nuts for my old 15FP's. It's an oddball size, 7/32-32. Apparently it was only used on these engines and has been discontinued for some time. OS MAX 15 fuel consumption
Building a Kyosho Shrike Commander 90 Twin using two OS MAX 15 engines. What is the fuel consumption for the 15s? There's not a lot of room for fuel tanks, a 4oz might fit, 2oz would fit much better. How long will a 2oz tank last at full throttle? Half throttle? Looking for around 10 minutes worth of flight time. Appreciate any advice you can give. Regards, TomC 'Crabs

RE: Need muffler for OS Max .61FX
Thanks for all the advice. A fellow flier at my club has a muffler from an Evolution .61 that I'm going to try, it looks like it might be compatible. It was a new motor, bought it just after Christmas from my local hobby shop. Didn't keep the receipt and the hobby shop was not able to provide me with a copy, their system is too old for that. I tried calling the OS tech support, they were of no help. They won't do anything unless I had the original receipt. I suppose I can understand that policy, we wouldn't want dishonest people to abuse the warranty program, now would we? If I had bought the engine from a online retailer, i.e., Tower or Hobby Lobby, etc., there wouldn't have been any problems getting a replacement muffler. They just check the order history, see that I bought one, and click a button and a muffler gets sent. Done deal. But NNNNOOOOOOOOOoooooooo...... Stupid me. I had to support a local hobby shop by buying local, and then was stupid enough to toss the receipt. I mean, heck, it's an OS engine fer gosh sakes. One of the best names in the business. They run for ever unless abused. Why bother keeping the stupid receipt? *rolls eyes* Lesson learned. Screw local hobby shops. Buy online from China directly. Whatever is the world coming to? OS Max .61FX Muffler
Lost the back half of my muffler while flying, managed to save the plane but couldn't find the muffler half in the tall grass.[:@] I bought the engine from local hobby shop about 3 or 4 months ago, so it is clearly still in it's 2 year warranty. Sad thing is, I've lost the receipt.[8|] I checked with the hobby shop, they tell me they can't give me a copy of the receipt, too long ago, blah, blah, blah, although he clearly remembers me buying it. What are my options, besides buying a new muffler? I want to support my local hobby shop, but had I bought the motor at Tower Hobbies I could have just called Customer Support and they would have shipped me a new muffler without question. Your advice sincerely appreciated. Tom Crabtree Folsom, CA

Lost the back half of my muffler way out in the field full of tall grass. Managed to land the plane OK, but couldn't find the muffler. OS Max part number E4010, really only need the back half but can't seem to find anyone selling just that part. It's a standard muffler for pretty much any of OS's .60 series engines. RE: Evolution 61 Please Help me
Terry: I have two Evo .61NX engines that do the exact same thing. They start and idle fine. Open the throttle and they make a sucking sound and die. I bought new carbs and needle valves and installed them, no joy. I had our club engine experts check them over and they tried every adjustment there was and they still would not run right. So I sent them both back to Horizon Hobby for repair just a couple of weeks ago. The official response was: "These engines were run lean and the cylinder walls are scored, not economical to repair". They offered to knock $20 off of the price for two new engines. I had them send me back the junk engines and I'll take them to a local swap meet and sell them for parts. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER EVOLUTION ENGINE AS LONG AS I LIVE! To be fair, they ran good for 3 or 4 seasons, but they did not last. I have 20 year old K&B's in a couple of my planes that run fine and gosh knows how much they been abused over the years. I have 16 planes in my hanger and 3 more in kits waiting to be built. None of them will EVER have an Evolution engine in them ever again. Tom Crabtree Folsom, CA

Why castor oil?
Am thinking of blending my own r/c fuel and am wondering what about Castor oil makes it the plant based oil of choice. Am pretty sure it's just for cooling and lubrication, but maybe there's some other magic that it does that I'm not aware of. Would some other plant based oil like linseed oil, soybean oil or even olive oil work just as well (obviously it has to be soluble in methanol). Any chemists out there? TomC

RE: Mystery Plane "Sweepy 40"
ORIGINAL: hallstro Yep...That plane is called "Sweepee" and was featured in the August, 1989 issue of Model Aviation. So your guess of 20 years is right on. The model is an original design by Sanjay Dhall. I have the construction article in my archives. If you need additional info, I can scan and post the article here. I see the CG at 5 3/4 inches inches ahead of the leading edge with an empty tank. The plans show the ship powered by the old Royal .40. I had one of those engines in a Goldberg Tiger until the crank snapped in two when an electric starter was applied! Good luck with the model. Bye the way...how did you acquire it? Dave
Dave: Thank you!! Let me see if I can dig up on the internet before you go to the trouble of scanning. I will do some searches today and see what I find. A member of a local flying club had passed on and his widow was selling off his collection of airplanes. It doesn't appear that this airplane has ever been flown. It's got an old K&B 40 on it with an interesting muffler with hole in the front ans well as the back, but there's no fuel stains in the engine bay. Again, thanks for the info!! TomC

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
[:o] Had a window of opportunity on Saturday, so out to the flying field I went for my Shrike's maiden flight. I tuned her up, got the motor nice and warm, then out to the runway. Sadly, our runway is in pretty bad shape, we've had a lot of really nasty weather, and there's some nice deep ruts and divots. Anyway, about 3/4 the way down the runway she hits a rut and the front gear twists to the left, stripping the screw that holds the steering arm to the nose gear assembly. Before you can say Boo, she turns left and into the wire fence protecting the pit area. Sigh. Anyway, out to the fence I go to see if there's anything left. Left wing damaged, left aileron torn off, and left tail severed. Dang. Luckily, damage is fairly minor and easily repaired. All I have left to do is re-apply the monokote and I'll be back at the field. Very disappointing, but could have been worse. Might have been controlable if I'd had put on rudders but once at a good clip the nosewheel basically becomes useless. Of course, if I had gotten her into the air, landing with the nosewheel pointing left would have been a major problem. Maybe even fatal. Can't wait to see her in the air. TomC

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
ORIGINAL: piper_chuck
Tom, this is something you should deal with. On a high speed plane, slop can lead to flutter, which could end up tearing the ailerons apart. Check the aileron linkages for slop and make the necessary changes before you fly.
I've taken your advice and rather than fly it with sloppy ailerons, I went down to the LHS and blew another $40 on two aileron servos. I then cut holes in the wing and installed the aileron servos. What an improvement! I've set up dual rates on the ailerons with about two inches of movement and proportional of 20% on the low rate setting, which should make the maiden a lot easier until her flying personality is known. The high rate setting gives nearly 90 degrees movement up and down, I'd imagine that she'd be pretty hard to control with that much throw. I've left the elevator alone, I've read that the Shrike requires a lot of elevator to get it back on the ground at low speed. I've programmed in flaperons for experimentation on landings. Depends on how hot she approaches the landings, if it comes in too hot I'll play with 10 to 20% flaps with a little up elevator to keep the nose up. Anybody here played with flaperon landings? Too bad the weather has turned nasty, otherwise I'd be at the airfield during my lunchbreak. We're getting wind gusts to 50mph and expecting 4 to 5 inches of rain in the next few days, doesn't sound like great flying weather. *sigh* Thanks for all the advice, can't wait for good weather! RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Well guys, wish me luck. I've finished the build and weather permitting tomorrow will be her maiden flight. I've taken some pics and I'll post them later. The build went OK, and after all was said and done it didn't turn out half bad. I took the liberty of adding landing gear with a steerable nose wheel which is articulated by the aileron servo. I'm not real happy with the ailerons, I chose the one servo in the fuse option when I built it and I'm beginning to think I may opt for the two servos in the wing option. They seem a little sloppy, not as firm/crisp as I would like. Wish me luck! And don't worry, I won't be her first pilot, I've already asked one of the instructors at our flying club to perform the maiden. You can betcher ass that I'll be on the buddy box though, can't wait to see how she flies. [:D][:D][:D] TomC

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Appreciate the reply. I decided on the LA because it was cheaper and because I had already had the engine mount that fit the LA 40/46 series. I too like the 46FX but they're twice the price. Just so's it's clear, my Shrike and my Spirit 'aint the only planes in my hanger. They are, however, the first two that I've built from kits. That being said, I ain't no "wet behind the ears, pimply faced, panty waist teenie without a clue". I'm a mean old, rotten, dispicable, dirty minded, filthy mounthed, 46 year old child, who picked up the hobby about 2 years ago. My first plane was a SIG LT40 ARF with a 46FX (surising, eh?). Outgrew it fairly quickly, moved up to a Goldberg Tiger 2 ARF with a ThunderTiger 46. When that got too small, I went to a 60 size Goldberg Tiger 2 ARF with an Enya 120 four stroke. Whoo HOO! What a plane! Of all my planes, it's actually the easiest to fly, and the most capable. I just felt the need for speed, and wanted something different. The Shrike seemed to fit the bill. Looks pretty cool, too. My dad now flies the LT40, he says the Tiger2 is too fast and that it requires too much attention to keep in the sky. He'd rather putt around the airfield and do an occasional loop. As long as he's happy, I'm happy. Me, on the other hand..... Love the speed. Gotta have the SPEED!!!! Thanks for all the tips and the advice. Still, gotta say... The instructions for the Shrike...... SUCK!!!! TomC

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Well, engine size decided. Stopped by the HobbyShop and picked up a OSMax LA 46 (the pretty blue one). It will be MORE than enough for unlimited vertical and plenty left over. I've picked up spruce to do the wing spars with, and I'm slowly figuring out how to add the landing gear and make the tail wheel functional without the 4th servo. Is it possible to somehow link the ailerons with the nose wheel? I'm about 3/4 of the way to finishing the fuse, and I'll say it again... THE INSTRUCTIONS SUCK! OK, now I feel better. This is only my second kit plane, my first was a Great Planes Spirit 100 3 meter glider. It went together like a breeze. Great instructions. With pictures too. I built it with alerons and flaps. I've yet to fly it, but I'm sure it will fly just fine. It looks great on the garage wall... 'nuff ranting. Thanks! TomC

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Building a Shrike40, was trying to decide between a .40 size or a .46 engine. Which make for better take offs and unlimited vertical? I'm a little afraid of overpowering the Shrike and making it hard to control. Which engine? I'm adding landing gear as I firmly believe that an airplane must take off and land on wheels to be a an airplane. A glider, well, that's another matter. As far as speed reduction due to landing gear, I'm not bothered by that. How far back on the wing do I put the landing gear.? I'm assuming just past the CG so that I get rotation on lift off and not a leap into the air. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, the building instructions suck. A few pictures would have made the chore much easier. Wonder why they didn't include them? TomC tccrab@sunset.nospam.net
