RE: Wanted: Source for strut material for 1/4 scale Vailly L-19 Bird Dog
Skkidman If you check a real L-19 you will find that the struts are not airfoiled they are more of an oval transitioning to a somewhat rectangular shape at the ends. With this in mind getting bass wood stock and sanding to shape would be better fo a true scale appearance. Also if you are not too far along in the build compare the elevator outline against a good 3 view, the Valliy 1/5 scale plan profile does not match. Tas

RE: Soldering Landing Gear Wire
I beg to differ with jaka. Force 44 does not require a propane torch. I use a regular soldering iron for small parts and a weller soldering gun for parts like landing gear. Of course one could use a propane torch for very large parts. Tas

RE: Soldering Landing Gear Wire
The best solder I have found is from Brownells and is sold for the gunsmith trade. It is called Force 44 and is a silver/tin alloy melting point 450 deg f. It has a shear strength of 28000 psi and comes either as wire with separate flux or wire with a flux core. Sta-Brite is a silver/tin alloy with about the same melting point and a shear strength of 14000 psi. Regular lead/tin solder is a poor choice as it is not resistant to vibration and only has a shear strength of 5680 psi. Tas

Another resource is the IBDA (International Bird Dog Association) www.ibdaweb.com There is also a book by Minard Thompson "The Loveable One Niner" which is a good resource and can be purchased on the IBDA web site. You might find someone who has a full scale L-19 close to you through them. Tas

RE: 1/4 vailley l19 birddog
Check out the 1/4 scale L-19 build thread it has a lot of enhancements to make it closer to scale. I have the 1/5 scale plans from Roy although am building a 1/5 scale Murataka kit. One thing I noticed about the 1/5 scale Vallencourt plans is that the elevator outline is wrong comparison with a good 3 view and a actual airplane shows a deviation in the inboard ends of the elevators. Good luck with your build. Tas

RE: 25% Cessna L-19/0-1 Bird Dog build
This manual leaves a lot to be desired unless they have revised it. It should be ok for anyone with a couple of arf builds under their belt. The glue job on the windows is poor I have had to reglue most of them. The blue color on the insignia is wrong. Other than that it appears to be well constructed. If you desire to change color scheme scrub the covering well with fine sandpaper or steel wool as paint does not adhere well to the covering. Tas

Calven, I measured the thickness of the LG on my 1/5 scale Murataka L-19 and it is around 3/16". Be aware that all aluminum is not equal. I personally would use 6061 but someone more familar with properties may not agree. Whatever you decide do not use hardware store aluminum as it is too soft. If it would help I have a IKON Nwest 1/4vscale in storeage and could dig it out and measure the LG. Regards Tas

Rick, According to Minard Thompson in his book "The Loveable One-Niner" The lettering listed in Army speciifications is: FUEL MIL-G-5572 6.25" foreward of the fuel cap with the top of the letters facing aft. On one of my 3 views it looks like: 21 GAL. CAP. MIL-F-5572 GRADE NO. 115/145 SUCTION FEED I have also seen the fuel grade as 80/87 Tas

Rick, The best 3 view showing panel and rivet lines I have found is in a set from Bob's Aircraft documentation. (L-19 (O-1E) liaison, w/instruments (5) W11-09 XD 11.00) There is also a drawing set available for download from the IBDA web site (http://www.ibdaweb.com/) for $5.00 You are always going to find discrepancies between the actual aircraft and your model. This has been a great disappointment to me as I have not found a set of plans that do not vary to a certain extent. Hope this helps Tas

Crash, The L-19 was designed to use the Cessna 170 wing, the tail from the Cessna 195, and a new design fuselage, landing gear, and engine (Continental O-470-13). This was designated the Cessna 305 prior to acceptance by the U.S.Army. Tas

RE: BH T-28 Assembly
Joe, The covering where the arrester goes into is just a piece of pushrod fairing. The attachment points at the tail and the front of the arrester are made from brass tubing rings that the arrester tube just slips in. The apparent attachment between the rings is just a dummy made from a servo screw with the head ground down. The ring at the front is soldered to piece of smaller diameter brass tube and the bottom of this tube has a slot cut halfway and a servo screw with the head ground down soldered in,the front of this tube is dressed up with a couple of pieces of telescoping tubing and a #0 hex head screw. The rear attachment is much the same except the ring is soldered to a piece of rectangular tube I had in my scrap box, again the bottom of the tube is slotted and a servo screw is soldered in. The rings are then screwed into the fuselage (I harden the holes with ca) The arrester tube is slipped through the rings and then glued in place. If you are still not clear on what I did I will try to create a drawing. Tas

Bill, I plug the fill line and use a Du-Bro fill valve in the fuel pickup line to the carb. I am using a Saito 100 twin, I maidened it last Tuesday it flies great. I am attaching some pictures taken just before the first flight. Mods / enhancements are Fults nose gear, star-bar insignia from major decals since the supplied ones were all wrong. The rest of the markings were done on Micro Mark inkjet decal paper. Plus I decided it wouldn't look right without an arresting hook. Tas
