RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Harry, It was a really BADDDDD omen when I started my takeoff rollout.....the port side hubcap popped off as I was rolling out just before I lifted off I saw it rolling down the runway as I bounced along on takeoff....once in the air I am certain that that missing hubcap disrupted the airflow going into the carburetor of the SAITO .82 engine and that is no doubt why it died as I was lifting off......LOLOL.....I like the idea of the screw on hubcaps....no more airflow disruptions and dead stick takeoffs then.....HAHAHA!!!! Thanks again, Mark
ORIGINAL: flyallday No problem, just want to add that the tires are identical but the hub and wheel cap are different. The cap screws on (which I like better) and the stock just pushes on. The cap has "CUB" on it that I sanded off and painted white. Harry
What's the chances of you having that particular DuBro part number for the wheels by chance?....Any luck there maybe?.....One can always hope so anyhow........Thank You very much in advance.
ORIGINAL: flyallday I broke one of my hubs and ended up using DuBro wheels. Almost the same but the hub has a different screw pattern, I have one on one side and the stock on the other and a spare in the kit. Harry
RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
OK folks.....I hadnt read any responses yet as to my inquiry about sprayer systems to purchase for this Piper Pawnee....any thoughts??? I ordered a new cowl for this thing also as the old one got cracked some when it landed hard, but Horizon Hobby had it on backorder. I then was loading my enclosed trailer up for a 500 plus mile trip to Rapid City, SD for a large scale flying event sponsored by the Flying Giants forum group where they take Giant Scale acrobatic aircraft and "HUCK" them near the ground.....kinda like showing off low crop-dusting skills....only flying vertically hanging on the prop.....HAHA.....anyhow.....I tripped on my big feet and booted the canopy of the Pawnee while it was sitting in its transport cradle in the trailer on the floor and cracked the canopy in numerous places.....some clear shipping tape held it all in place quite nicely while I got back online and ordered the new canopy along with the engine cowl that had come back off of backorder status...Those packages arrived here last week safe and sound, but life got in the way and I haven't been able to get them installed just yet. Good thing the installation was put off as here at the field this past Sunday morning while flying my Piper Pawnee, upon takeoff just as I was about 5 to 10 feet up in elevation above the runway and starting to turn out to the takeoff pattern the Saito .82 dies at that low altitude and flight speed and naturally a crash landing is immenent. Now comes some minimal structural damage to the landing gear area of the fuselage plywood and mounting block areas with the obligatory need for re-covering that area after commencing the repairs.....one wheel hub plastic got broken and torn apart in several places and it will be better to effect a replacement of the wheel assembly on that side.....but alas.....when looking on Horizon Hobbies website.....the two wheel assembly package is on backorder also.....no telling how long thats going to take to get back in stock yet either....The wire landing gear itself has bend and mutilated the really poor spot welds on the cross brace wire strut of the landing gear so I also ordered the wire gear and will now effect repairs and strenghtening the old design of the wire gear also and that will give me a spare set to keep on hand. Of course I could always just open up the brand new sealed carton that contains my previously ordered ARF kit from Singer Hobby of this Piper Pawnee and rob pieces and parts out of that sealed up ARF kit but I am trying to advertise that ARF and sell it for what I had in it when I ordered it from Singer Hobby online. If anyone would like this sealed up never opened ARF just shoot me a PM and we can figure out the particulars for you to recieve this wonderful plane. I am still loving this Piper Pawnee and the gentle way it flies and the good looking covering scheme is definitely a huge hit with everyone at the club here. Let me know if anyone has information on sprayer kits and hopper setups for this plane also for sale. Thanks again, Mark

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
I have just recently aquired a Hangar9 Piper pawnee all done up with a Saito .82 and Spektrum/JR electronics and a JR/PROPO 1650 Mah NiMh battery....MPI combination charging port and ON/OFF switch setup.....It DEFINITELY needs a scale sized pilot in there yet tho.....any ideas of where to aquire one that fits sitting on the seat?.....I do already know about the custom Pilot artist online here that will carve one in your likeness too, and I dont think I am good enough of a RC Pilot to want to possibly kill myself in a crash....LOLOL I haven't decided yet if I will install a complete lighting system in this airplane yet or not.....kind of depends on what it will entail to get the wiring ran thru the wings and such yet. I installed a set of NAV and Strobe lights in the CM PRO Cessna 182 that I own and it was a very good thing that I own a micro diameter Bore-Scope camera that I was able to push down thru the wings toward each wingtip and come up with a route to run the wiring.....and yet it took me over 9 hours on just the wiring run on just the first wing that I attempted....talk about a steep learning curve to figure out what worked best to route the wiring.....I used a RAM Lighting setup on it.....any other manufacturers that anyone knows about that they can post links to them I would most certainly appreciate that also.... Another question.......does anyone have any links to different sprayer systems to mount on this Pawnee that actually function properly such as smoke spray.....or powder.....or even possibly liquid .....I appreciate all the links to pilots, lights and sprayer systems in advance, and I am going to post a couple of pictures of its maiden flight......it was most DEFINITELY a biggggggg handful to get it flying smoothly while we both trimmed it out....but once that was accomplished its just a big ol' docile trainer-like aircraft to handle in the air now......we flew it soooooooo lonnnnnng on its maiden flight trying to get the proverbial "one more time around" profile picture for our club's photographer that guess what happened....YES you're absolutely correct.....an out of fuel deadstick glide back to the runway......this Pawnee glides FOREVERRRRRRR!!!!.....and talk about not losing any airspeed to speak of in a slight shallow banked turn from downwind to base and then again another banked turn onto final approach and a greased-in perfectly smooth landing.....definitely exciting to have to learn it's tendencies the hard way on the maiden flight.....WWWHHHEEEWWWW !!!!!! Even in powered flight and extreme Use your PC to perfectly set engine thrust angle, wing incidence, decalage and control throws angle sharp banks and turns without any rudder mixed in automatically the nose did not seem to want to drop but just the slightest fraction and you barely had to apply just a slight touch of elevator to keep the nose up in the turns.....I was very impressed by that fact, no doubt......One flaw that I have noticed already, just like what has been mentioned earlier in this forum is the weak landing gear wire system that wants to bow in the middle and also bend at the axle bend point too.....both places tend to splay the wheels way too easily, and hopefully someday I can come up with something a bit stronger for that small problem too. All said and done, this is a wonderful flying aircraft and I will certainly enjoy it on the lazy Sunday morning flying times. Once again Thanks in advance to everyone on this forum for all the informative help, links and discussions on CROP DUSTER setup's. Mark

RE: How did you spend Sat. 03-17-12?
Lets see....First off woke up around 5:30 AM MST.....after a shower and morning chores I started prep work on the tradiitional Saint Patrick's Day feast of Corned Beef and Cabbage with all the trimmings...that was in the crock pot and going by 7 AM MST. Wife presented me with the annual St. Paddy's Day themed T-shirt to wear for her....She's a great sweetheart!!!! At about 10:30 AM MST I was at the field , along with other club members, prepping my mind to fly a Great Planes Big Stick .40 sized flight using a Spektrum Dx7 transmitter I had been procrastinating for about a year using it. It was a harrowing flight but successful landing without any major glitches, due to nerves more than anything....even had pre-programmed in 25% exponential on low rates, but it felt like it needed more. The winds were blustery between 14-19 knots <16-22 mph> and most of that was a variable quartering or full cross wind......wayyyyyyy beyond my 'NORMAL" comfort zone level....So all in all a great flight all things considered. From there the winds stayed horrible, so it was time to pack up and head home about 2:00-2:30 PM MST. Back home and finish getting dinner and the trimmings done and served for the wife and myself. Next thing I know one of our grandsons wants to come over so his Father drops him off here and we feed him also.....now another grand daughter and her husband want to visit this lucky Irishman's clan so she and her husband bring our 5 month old great grand daughter to visit and eat dinner. How do these kids know the grandparents cook so much for just two people anyhow???.....LOLOL Now it is Sunday and the grandson spent the night here, and we went to the field to try flying this morning after chores and breakfast, to no avail. Upon arrival there the winds turned into direct cross winds and 15-10 mph gusts. Not even going to bother unloading a plane for that much wind, thank you. Back home and we strip components from a wrecked "Avistar" preparing to get that trainer ready to use again at a later date. Perhaps to start training him to fly? He soon gets bored and wants to look up information on the internet concerning building a "boomerang" to play with, while I dozed off watching the NASCAR race for awhile.....(Naps...does a body good!!!!)....hahaha. We go to the shop and get a slab of Birch wood out and draw a simple boomerang design onto the wood and I fire up the scroll saw and belt and disk sander and rough him out a simple, yet non-flying boomerang, instructing him that I will later on carve the airfoil into it for him after he can prove to me he's capable of not clubbing his sister or brother with it and just to use it for "pretending" for right now to pique his interest. Now it's back inside and he's watching HARRY POTTER something or another and I am enjoying the forums. LIFE IS GRAND!!!!! Mark
OK I should have stated in the first posting that the tank is located approximately 3-4 inches BELOW the carb throat level......that was the verrrrrrrry first thing i noticed about the setup and stated to the owner that was not a prime location for the tank at all.......but......now get this.......it works MUCH and I cannot tell you how MUCCCCCCHHHHH much much better it works there that low......and yes I know it is not good......but................that is the frustration of this problem I'm fighting.....now hold the tank at mid level approx an 1.5" below the carb throat and it gets worse.......either level or nose up or down.......and move the tank higher to the "quote......normal.....unquote" slightly below or level at the throat of the carb and........YUP you guessed.......much worse throughout the entire operational spectrum.......GRRRR!!!!! Not alot on this problem makes a lick of sense at all......but I will figure it out.......come heck high water or flood.....as the saying goes.

OK.....I finally got the ceiling insulated with the silver backed bubble wrap type of insulation....I used "Lock-Tite Power-Grip" brand of adhesive....I'll see how that holds up...also finished up the roof mounted solar panel installation with the regulator setup from Harbor Freight for keeping the deep cycle marine battery topped off...added a 12 volt oscillating fan also and a 110 volt oscillating fan too....so either way I can have some sort of air moving around..I can set it up to run both the 12v and the 110v fans at the same time while either on shore power or battery powered thru the inverter....altho the battery wont last very long with both fans going im sure....I havent tested them that way yet tho...storage items now mounted on the doors now also...so now the trailer has 2 fire ext's...silver foil ceiling insulation....cool seal type roof coating...solar powered charging system for the onboard 12 volt deep cycle battery....a 1200W/2400W inverter...12 volt cig. lighter plugs....110V GFCI protected plugs...12V lighting...110V rope lighting....110V flourescent lighting...fuselage racks....wing racks...D-rings and eyehooks all over the trailer in various places...110V/12V Igloo brand cooler/warmer fridge...storage cabinets....shelving....painted walls....epoxy painted walls and floor....charging jacks...paper towel dispensers...cabinets and drawers for storage along with a work bench countertop...and the list goes on and on....I'm sure I've overlooked listing several improvements that I have completed already.....WHEWWWW!!!! OKKKKKKK.....I got to use the enclosed trailer at our club fun fly this past weekend.......a great time was had by all.....grilled burgers brats and dogs for the group also saturday for lunch.....stayed in the trailer there friday and saturday night also....air mattress and 'bags was a hoot.......aint done that in AGES!!!!......the trailer definitely needs a vent window or two cut into it to stay in it overnite tho even w/ the sidewall vents it was wayyyyy stuffy......Saturday night i figured out a good way to prop the door open just a crack and hold it secured w/ a mini bungee so it didnt swing open any......that helped w/ air moving around some but glad we dont have a 'skeeter' problem ......hahahahaha I now have installed a marine deep cycle battery system and 1200watt nominal 2400 watt peak modified sine wave inverter......now i know someone will tell me I needed a true waveform inverter.....but this thing runs what I have needs for just fine already......and it was lots cheaper to purchase too......next will be floor D-rings and some dual track shelf rack system installed too......its coming along nicely i think......see for yourselves. Also......any suggestions as to where to pick up, or ask about, getting some large size RC decals for the exterior of the trailer to apply to it.....<lets see the 'no decals for theft crowd tear me up now>......now I dont plan on actually willingly pay for the decals tho.....something about paying a company to advertise their products for them just doesnt set right with me somehow......hahaha.....guess I'm a bit too ''thrifty'' huh??? More pix now with fuselage and wing racks and some interior 110 volt rope lighting for the after hours light source and ambience also.....40 foot length of rope lights was $19.00 US dollars at Wal-Mart in the sporting goods section where they are sold as lights to put up under an "Easy-Up" shade canopy. The fuselage and wing racks are made with ordinary pine 2x4's and 3/4" PVC pipe with foam and caps glued into place on them. I have installed a shore power type waterproof bulkhead plug and that goes into two 15 amp breakers seperated into one circuit for the plugs and one circuit for the 110 volt flourescent lights. The rope lights are just simply plugged into one of the wall receptacles to power them on an 'as needed' basis.

Definitely both 12 volt and 110 volt setups with remote banana plug setups for 12 volt battery charging plugs etc:
