6014FS - installation
Hi .... I have the 6014FS Rx with the receiver antennas inside the fuselage being in close to a big plate of pc board material (5,1"x 8,6") with the copper on it. No power...just the material. Do you think I will have any problems ? Thanks in advance

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
I spent the last 2 days in front of my pc screen designing all the decals , ( Greek ones ) that the plane has around and after I transferred them into the plane's scale, I cut them with a Vinyl Cutter . Fortunately I have available to me a ...Good... Old Roland Vinyl Cutter so , all this process does not cost me anything . The vinyl decals are more in number because they are for 2 planes ... my CL 215 and the CL 415 of my friend , pappy.

Yes , I know that and for this reason I'm trying to reduce weight from where I can...... Even from the gears , allthough i made them by your plans, i have the ability to reduce their weight at about 150 gr...maybe more.....

[quote]ORIGINAL: bernard.dumas Hello Teresos, I've just had a look to the forum after several weeks off, and I must say I am very impressed by your work. Your landing gear looks very nice and close to the real one. As I wrote on my site, up to you to push further in detail, I think you applied this without any reserve ! What about the total mass of your model ? Again congratulation Bernard

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
In order to reduce this weight I did what my friend , Pappy, suggested !!! (thanks Pappy!). I divided each float in the middle, using a Xacto blade. Afterwards I used the Dremel ( and a spherical burr) in order to make the inner of the Balsa hollow and create 0.5cm thick walls. ( Pappy and I funnily named that technique “The Principle Of The Pumpkin” ). The weight of each piece dropped at 9.8gr. I confess that I was not expecting that result. I re-glued the pieces by using C.A. ......and again on the scale... Now the weight of each float is 20.3gr + 25gr (vertical strut) . That means 45.3gr in total. The final result is 32.3gr less weight for each float . That is 64.5gr profit for the wing. The next step for the float will be the glassing. Instead of fabric however I will use a woman’s tights sins they tend to grab all curves easily without much of an effort !!!

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
Even though I have a tight schedule , I managed to go on with the construction and post some updates. The first thing I did was reducing the weight of the floats. As I have mentioned in previews post (post 267) my floats were made from a solid balsa piece. The weight of each float is around 52gr. Taking under consideration that the vertical strut ( float support ) weight 25gr , then the total weight of the float is 77gr.

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
In order to have less cables passing from the wing to the fuse, I decided to install the twin-sync inside the wing. http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/WRCTWINSYNC.html I didn't place it in the cabin cause if I did that I would have to enlarge 6 of the cables (sensor-throttlle-glow etc..)at about 50cm more. Because I wanted to have access to the twin-sync programming and control of the leds, I cut one square opening on the top of the wing, and I placed a clear plastic "window" on it.

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
I also added navigation lights at the wing tips. As for the lights I used ultra bright Led of 10mm with their mounts. In addition I cut 2 pieces of Tuborama ......(that’s the name we use in Greece when referring to the tube that plumbers use for the installation of the heating devices we install in our houses). These pieces were put at the wing tips and their inner diameter perfectly matches the outer diameter of the LED mount. This way I can easily retract the LED in case of malfunction. .....to be continued....

The first hand of putty was thick and fast over the foam just to fill the gaps. Then I spread putty 3 more times , smoothening the surface with sandpaper after each time. Now the cover is ready for glassing. At this point once again I will use a woman’s tights instead of fabric.

I filled in all the gaps with white foam , then cut off all the excessive parts with a knife and the last part of the formation was managed with sandpaper. A second test placement on the wing showed once again that everything is as it should be.

After printing the templates I glued them on 3mm ply and cut of all the formers and the strings. I glued all the pieces with C.A. and the frame of the cover is now ready. A test placement on the wing showed the match perfectly.........

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
Today I have to encounter another challenge,... .....the construction of the engine covers. Dumas’s original plans are not sufficient for this part. They just show a cover put on its place and not the way to construct it. So I started drawing templates on Corel ( As I said before.....I can't CAD ) in order to create a design for the covers. After spending a couple of hours in front of my pc screen I took a satisfactory result.

At the upper part of the bases , I made a cylinder cut (made of ZAP C.A. caps) that makes the easy the placement of the wing bolts. After that I finished the sheeting of the upper part of the wing.

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
The 2 cables that you can see on the left and right of the central section are for the red strobo lights that exist at the lower part of the wing right on the top of the main gear. Since the cables for the lights where permanently connected i installed tubing for the servo cables to come through and not freely rattle inside the wing. The tubing was made by soft drink straws with rope in them in order to pull the servo cables later.

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
Next step was to build the bases that the wing will be attached to the fuselage with 4 screws. I decided to replace the 6mm plastic screws with 5mm metallic since the plane is becoming heavier and I cannot trust any more the plastic ones. After making the necessary reinforcements the wing bases where put with epoxy and screws.

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
A problem that I encountered was when I started to create the back base on the fuselage, where the wing will be attached, that influences the installation-removal of the top axle of the main gear. The 2 screws at the back that hold the wing, where exactly where the main gear top axel should come out. In order to solve this problem I created a base made of three pieces I put together with epoxy. a) 5mm hard ply b) soft wood c) 3mm hard ply ............ The first 5mm piece was placed under the upper main gear reinforcement. This way the wing support is reinforced. The blind nuts were placed on this piece . At the second piece made from soft wood I created a tunnel. This way, when the wing is not attached I can put the axel since the screw is not there. In addition I put 2 screws at both sides of the fuse for extra reinforcement.

RE: Bernard Dumas' Canadair CL-215
While finishing the sheeting of the lower surface of the wing I created the openings for the servos. I did not put the servos inside the wing by using hatches but outside since I had already created the servo bases according to the original Dumas plans. In order to internally protect the wing and especially at the place where the flap servos are put , from any potential fuel or oil leaks I sealed them up with balsa. First I cut small pieces from a sheet of balsa , after the first covered on one side with glass tissue. Then I created small boxes around the servos with the glass side looking inwards.
