RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Mine will knife edge loop w/ the DLE30. In part do to a lot of rudder but the engine is still breaking in. It has good verticle but it is not unlimited. Have not yet put the larger prop on it...which "should" help vertical...my guess is it will be a slow verticle. This engine will not set you up like an IMAC plane that has a 2x1 HP/Wt ratio. Overall it is a great combination. Engine also has really great throttle response throught the range....was quite surprized at how well it actually runs.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
You 35% is looking great Marcus. Hey, flattery is when someone copies your work. I have not really done much on my SD, but, I did receive my coverning today so I am still spending $$ on it! Decided to dump the solertex/paint and go w/ Ultracote. Essentially to get it done faster...not that it really matters now! I did put one of the RC-Guys SDs together and have flown it. I got some ideas from it on finishing out the cabin that I am going to do on my Hostetler. Good luck w/ your 35%. Looking forward to seeing the final project.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Have not tac'ed my DLE30. I am running a Biela 18x8 and can tell you that it is already not enough prop. I need to load up the top end a little more, but since it's new I am going to stick w/ this until the engine is off dinasour oil. BTW, I was surprized to hear about the drift to the left on takeoff. Mine did the same thing....but I assumed it was the wind as it was blowing pretty hard for the maiden. Enclosed is a quick pic of the engine/ign/muff.

I just maidened mine this past weekend. DLE30 and I used a J-Tec Pitts muffler. You have to notch out the fuse at the bottom to clear the twin exausts. Looks good thought.

Hey Marcus: You yellow version does look great. Let us know how it flys. I have been sidetracked on my 30% for a while. I did make the cockpit instrument panel and an finalizing the cabin layout. Then I have to make my struts and cover/paint. Putting together a RC Guys Decath at the moment to knock around in the meantime. Putting an DLE 30 in it.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Your right about nose...actually the fuse width all together, but I was already committed. I am using Nelson lite fab and painting w/ their system-three epoxy paint. It's water based so no VOCs. I am using the SD pattern (had paint masks made up for the stars) with an apple green (the Ultracote color) over white w/ black trim. Same colors as on the Midwest Citabria I posted here a couple of years ago, but w/ the SD pattern. I ran into the Screaming Eagles group a couple years ago and the sent me some factory color schemes so is you want some unusal colors let me know. I told them something w/ green...and they set me would wild ones. I would post them now but can't seem to find them? The truss ribs were actually quite easy to make. You just copy the outline of the rib, mount it on a board and hammer small nails around the perimeter and where you decide to put the cross members. Then you simply cut and glue rib after rib. It goes surprizing fast, especially when they are all the same shape. These are made w/ 1/8" square ply with 1/64" small gussets at each joint. Light and very strong once you get them assembled and capped. I saved a small fortune by not cutting our of contest balsa...... I use the left over ply from Midwest Citabria kit to cut the strips, so they really did not cost me anything build. As for the aluminum struts, I actually have some. They are from Sea Commander, and are for floats that I had and never used. They are extruded T6 and are expensive. (You can purchase the tubing directly from Sea Commander) Not sure how they were able to get the airfoil shape....my guess is they extruded a regular T6 tube thru a die, but it's just a guess. They have a lot of stress marks on the from the shaping...of course T6 is brittle. I purchased some wooden airfoil strut material from Balsa USA however that I actually plan on using. I am going to go w/ the jury struts the way Ken did his rather than the plans. I am not good w/ metal fabrication. Your struts look great Marcus. I won't have quite the detail of your squadran of SDs or Ken's, but I am happy with it. EG not doing much w the interior (for now anyway) If you ever decide to export any of your kits put me down for one!

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Looking good Marcus. Below are a couple of new shots of my 30%. I rough mounted the cowl to locate my mounting blocks, then finished sheeting the fuse up front. After the framed up shot below I completed the fuse stringers (recall the issue w/ Hostetlers former errors). Have mounted the vert stab and sanded tail section. I have the template for the front windscreen completed and have the sky light framed up and ready as well. I will have my el servos in the tail area as shown. Rudder servo is on the floor just behind the door. Tank, throttle and choke servo are located at engine box level just below the cockpit instrument panel. I am final sanding the stab/elevators now. Wing is complete and ready to cover. Last things include building the raised instrument panel and the wing struts and mounting the wheel pants. Cover then paint. Actually may finish this this year!! Slow, but fun. Tom

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Joe: There was a quick blurb in the thread about glassing the box that holds the spars. Other that that I do not recall anything on glassing the center section, and as the others have replied, it's not needed. If you are concerned about the wires, there are some folks who bent the wire at the end on the fuse 90 degrees, drilled a hole, and simply stuck the wire thru the hole. Tom

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Yes that's right Marcus. I made one model years ago and painted it w/ automotive paint...all of the masking and such. But worse were the hardeners/volatiles, requiring a respirator, etc. I swore off of painting after that. The Citabria photos and several of my other planes do have painted cowls and wheel pants however. The one benefit of painting is you get a good/exact match with the covering and fiberglass, etc. The system three paints have a semi-gloss finish (unless you juice it up w/ some other additives) and it is easy to use and clean up. Hardly any VOCs. You use water as your reducer. So, it is much easier and safer to use than automotive paint and it gives a nice finish. I'll post some more photos of the progress as I finish it. Right now I am working on a Quickie 25 for race season...a "Venom". Tom.
