RE: Need plans
I really don't know if this will help or not..... I found this link once from a guy that tracked Sterling stuff that was listed on Ebay, nor do I remember if there was any contact info there, nor do I remember if HE actually sold or traded items....helpful, huh ? but this is the addy anyway . //home.mindspring.com/~jeff.coons I found it interesting when something did get listed for bid, to go to that site and see what others like items sold for. I also found the Sterling catalogs interesting to see.

RE: Classic sailboat
Hello Vasek Since you are in Europe, the first item I thought of were these beautiful "Youpi" RC Sailboats from France. you can see them here : //voiliers-classiques-rc.voile-rc.net In Germany look at a company called "Schepp Modelbau" he has a 6' long hull called the "Lacustre" you can see them at www.rc-sailing.com Here in the U.S. there are many choices at www.victor-model.com, they have a schooner called the "Mary J Ward" and a gaff sloop called the "Ruby B"-both as kits Tippecanoe Boats has all wood kits, the 47" Fairharbor Schooner looks nice.www.modelsailboat.com There is a 48" version of "J" Class yachts called the "Canterbury J"-with a wood deck they are gorgeous .www.pmycsail.com If you go to the American Model Yachting Assoc. website at www.theamya.org you will see 3 different size version's of 12 Meter yachts, the 46 " long "U.S. 12", the 58" long "EC-12 Meter" and the 72" long "Newport 12 Meter" This info should give you a start Allan

RE: mainsheet / boom
dr2 could you tell us size/type of boat you have ? depending on how big, there is a bunch of DuBro items in either 2-56 or 4-40 that can be used for rigging, ie: plastic or metal clevis's are very commonly used on the end of side stays , hooked into a screw eye or screw bolt . a vang can be as simple as a line with a bowsie , or a rigid vang can be cobbled from DuBro parts also. where in Illinois are you ? if your near Chicago come visit our club some Sunday -I can pm you contact info. oh, I just went through what you are doing, got an old boat from a club member, funny the booms wouldn't go out far enough. checked against the plans, oops - the exit holes on the deck were in the wrong places. then made sure the attachment points on both booms were right above those points and hey, booms go all the way out now.magic.. RE: Getting inti sailing, can't decide on a boat.
Hello well, welcome to a great part of the rc hobby -sailboats are indeed a wonderful way to spend an afternoon at your local pond. as far as comparisons go , there is a source, but it is a "rival" website to this one, so for the url not to show up we type it out like this...3wsdotrcgroupsdotcom about halfway down the forum list will be the "boats" section , click on "sailboats" and the very top thread is a "sticky" thread - which means it is always at the top of the page - anyway it is a place for guys to "review" various types of rc sailboats.it would be worth a look. the first 2 types you mentioned I really don't know much about - the Nirvana I do - it is great- sails really well, easy set up. boat itself is well made. the electronics on the early models were an issue - but that is now resolved with new options. another source of info would be right in your neck of the woods, a rc club called the st. louis admirals(.com) - plenty of good advice there - and as they used to have a active rc sailboat fleet there is a very good chance of picking up something used from one of those guys. they had a Soling 1 Meter fleet for many years -now thats a great boat ( I have one of those as well) in fact my boat came from that group. like anything else in life, you get what you pay for with rc sailboats - and even expensive "ready to sail" boats have problems. good luck , and keep asking questions, thats why we are all here-to help out each other. RE: Sailing Near Scranton
Hi Bier there is a resource for this kind of info, on the American Model Yachting Assoc. website at www.theamya.org they have a listing of clubs by state - I took a look around and found 2 clubs near you. 1) Lake Naomi Sailing Assoc. in Pocono Pines. they have a website : //lnsa.org they race the Laser class rc sailboats. 2) Nepa Model yacht Club , in Hamlin Pa. no website, and they do not say what class boats they have. go take a look at AMYA , under the boat club list - they had a phone number there to call for info. if you go to the AMYA site , take a look at the "boat classes" a to z listing , you can get an idea of what is going on these days with rc sailboats. hope this helps Allan Chicago

RE: Just getting into it
Dhershy while I DO NOT disagree with anything Boomer said - your budget constraints will be a problem - you will see boats listed on ebay ( for example) that might be close in dollars , but will in the long run disappoint. I would also suggest you get more local info in this - so take a few minutes and go to the American Model Yachting Assoc. website at www.theamya.org in the left hand tabs look for the club info , and you will see a list by state of rc sailing clubs - ought to be lots in MA. talk to those guys , see what they sail , when and where. often a used first boat is a good idea - however $155. won't get you far . the main point is , sailing with a group of guys is WAY fun , and sailing within a class is the way to go. BUT - your doing research ,and that is the way to avoid buyers remorse . THATS why we help people in these chat sites - it benefits the hobby if you get the right gear , "right" boat , and ask tons of questions . the shame is local hobby stores are really useless when it comes to rc sailboats .no help there. oh , and while on the AMYA site - checkout the tabs that describe the various class boats being raced these days. Hi Capnswanny well, that is NOT a Santa Barbara, BUT it is beautiful ! nice find ! if you need local help with the boat try and contact the club near you ,the "Anacortes RC Sailors" they have a website listed at ... //sites/google.com/site/arcsailors looks like they meet near you , and would probably provide help ,opinions and such - I have not yet met a rc skipper that didn't want to see someone else's boat -especially something "antiquey" ! I don't know if your hull was ever a "sanctioned" AMYA class boat - might even be a one of a kind . Good Luck ! Allan

RE: Heritage sailboat parts.
Roger no problem -this is what we do on these forums, usually someone has an answer to a question. looking at the photo's again - the rigging might need an update-if you have a bass-pro or cabela's (or gander mtn?) near you just get some 60 pound stainless leader wire-and the correct size crimps to make the ends up with. spreaders are easy- a bit of rod (usually threaded)thru the spar and then on each side a short length of brass tubing with a cotter pin stuck in each end for the wire to go thru. actually, same deal for jumper struts if you need them also. and, while shopping find some dacron 50 pound fishing line for running rigging. RE: Heritage sailboat parts.
Hey rjbirr I don't think there are any parts inside the hull specific to a Heritage. I could recommend a HiTec HS-645MG servo for the rudder. You should talk to the people at servocity dot com about a drum winch for the main and jib control.(WAY cheaper than an RMG winch) If you want a dedicated radio system for the Heritage checkout the 4 channel 2.4mgz units at HobbyKing dot com I have purchased battery packs from HobbyPeople dot net-watch their website they have insane deals on 6v,5cell packs.can be really cheap source. That hull will paint up fine with spray cans. good luck ! Allan

RE: AC CLASS SAILBOAT
cpe190 I just sent an email to the AC Class secretary, and asked if he could come here and take a look at this hull. he might have some advice - I sent the message thru the AMYA system so give it a few days. I met Gene this summer at a regatta , nice guy-maybe he can help with info. Ebay is fine , believe me , if something good is listed there the word gets out pretty quick ! problem of course would be shipping... one tip-if you were gonna ship it, get a piece of that heavy wall thickness cardboard tube stuff that carpet comes rolled on - be very good for the masts and booms to go in. around here , those tubes just get thrown out,and carpet places have to cut 'em up and put them in a dumpster to get rid of them. I have gotten them free for just asking. oh,those extra pics and info were perfect ! Allan

RE: AC CLASS SAILBOAT
cpe190 maybe a little more info - can you measure the length along the deck and the max width of the hull ? also , any serious buyer would want to know about the servos inside the hull - can you post up a picture of the inside ? and most important , I'm guessing there must be a keel floating around somewhere for that hull - a boat that size would have a considerable bulb/fin that attaches to the hull and hangs down below it..... there should be a slot in the bottom center of the hull where it will slide in... pretty boat - but won't sail without a keel -and that's gonna affect the value.just sayin... RE: Santa Barbara One Design Hull
Hi sbooth this may surprise you , but it depends.... I sail in a club here in Chicago that has a very active S/B fleet ( we just hosted the 2010 Nationals in June ) and boats in "decent" condition have been exchanged for six to eight hundred dollars - but consider all the factors involved... boat -age and condition deck - ocean racer style , cabin house ( desireable ) or custom flush deck ? electronics - old but still working Vortex winch or a 300 dollar RMG winch ? sails - new , old , dacron or mylar ? demand - our hulls keep or increase their value by virtue of having an active fleet here - if you have the only one within 100 miles I can see that affecting the value , if racing is the goal-but then these 70" hulls have quite a "wow" factor pond side ....... why not send an email to the S/B class secretary and get his opinion ? he can be reached at "santabarbara@theamya.org" also ,this will allow let Ernie Mortensen (sec.) to keep his info files updated - we are always trying to keep track of "our" boats . it would also help if you could post a picture here , overall side view (with rig ?) , and a close up of the radio board . I think replacement value would be a thousand to twelve hundred (?) for a new boat , all up .... hope this helps Allan

RE: Today it was nice sailing with my Vo70 Team Delta-lloyd
Hi Oscar I thought the pictures and the idea of what you did were wonderful ! I imagine you had many good comments from people watching you as your group sailed by - was canal traffic a problem from big boats ? You should send a couple of pictures into your local newspaper for club publicity - maybe they will call and interview you for a small article . it never hurts to let people know what your group does and you may find new members . Here in the midwest of the USA we sail on a small kidney bean shaped lake - I suggested once that we have a "around the lake race " - the distance would only be about 900 meters - and they all looked at me like I was crazy . I guess your fellows are younger or just in better physical shape for the walk you took ! I hope you make this an annual event for your club - it is a great idea . Allan

RE: Retrieving a sailboat...
Hi Paul A couple of considerations : How large is the pond you want to sail at , if it is pretty small then a thrown or cast system will work . for instance , a fairly large treble hook , with the pointy ends cut off and a few split shot weights on the line cast from any garage sale fishing pole could work . you can also use something light like those mason line spools sold at home centers , attached to a hook , or you can make a nifty little grapnel out of dollar store knitting needles and whip that out there by hand . but the real fun is having a nice rc electric power boat for rescue work . this can be almost anything - the considerations are the bigger the pond and/or the more wind you just need more power and control . but either way the system works the same way , a light line is attached to the power boat , you need a few over size fishing bobbers for floatation on the line right behind the boat - the idea is to motor out to the disabled sailboat , circle it ( this is why you need the bobbers) and on purpose entangle the two craft . then shut off the motor boat and pull the line in by hand . ok , depending on a lot of factors this works best - a sailboat aint easy to tow , wind is a factor and waves - you need a lot of power to tow something - all you really need to do is get a line out to the stricken vessel and then pull it back to shore . this would also work for you since your T27 has a fin keel with the bulb on it - ought to be easy to get a line around it . have fun with your new sailboat ! Hey Pooch very nice looking IOMs ! Just in case you don't know , on www.theamya.org you can use the club locator tab and scroll down to New York and find local rc clubs , the club listings usually say what class boats are sailed there . or try www.iomclass.org for leads to find sailing friends...... . interesting : the keels HAVE to be removable on IOMs ..... I don't know if you ever heard of an outfit called "Harbor Freight Tools" they carry a dandy digital scale ,good to 11lbs,can measure in oz/grams/lbs. usually lists for like 20. , but will often be a sale item (last saw it for $16.) RE: spektrum tx and rx question
Hi Nick I have been using the DX5e in my Soling 1 meter RC sailboat . In my instruction book it just says to keep the long and short antenna's at 90 degree's to each other - and keep the antenna ends at least 3 '' apart . on my boat , I have a piece of velcro glued onto the bulkhead by the spar support . the original owner drilled a small hole in that station , and has a plastic drinking straw that is glued under the deck . my LONG antenna lead just goes into the straw and is then running forward right under the deck . the short antenna lead just sticks out from the RX and is at right angles to the long lead.......and the RX is stuck onto the bulkhead -high and dry . Does this help any ? Allan

RE: boat park
Hello Ilanb Why don't you google search New York City's ( USA ) Central Park model boat pond - there was ( still is ? ) a fellow there that had a cart , and on it he had some quantity of those 42 " ( 1066mm) long "Laser" RC sailboats that he rented - i imagine by the hour . I would highly recommend you looking into the newer 2.4 ghz radio systems ( instead of AM or FM radios with crystals ) . Were you thinking about RC sailboats as opposed to Electric motor boats ? I am sure the guy in New York picked the "Laser" model for it's ease of set up ( no rigging stays ) , it has a impressive size , ought to be very durable and take any accidental abuse/ crashes / bumps / etc. , plus be easy for non -sailors to grasp the rudiments of piloting one around a pond - as it has only one main sail , and the rudder control . Battery packs can last many hours - either in the boat itself or in the transmitter - but spares and chargers would be part of your start up cost for such a business - and the boats of course.....and these days Asian knock-off radio systems are very inexpensive to purchase . I am curious why you asked about "30 boats or more " ? if the park and people traffic are enough , you would realize that even starting with a dozen boats if the business could handle more units - you can always expand.... Hope this helps. Allan Chicago USA
