Nitro Models 60 size P-40 modifications
I started working on this plane two years ago. With so many other projects getting me sidetracted and after seeing the Black Horse thread it got me motivated to finish this one up. The plane is nowhere near scale but has the general outlines of the Warhawk. I know LDM has done alot to his in the past so I hope this will maybe have some new ideas. I first removed the P-51 style mechanical retracts and moved new mounts to the outboard rib bay. Using the robart retracts, I resheeted the wing and made some balsa/plywood wheel wells. I also added some ejection slots and gun service covers for the .50 cals I mean alum. machine guns. It gives it enough detailing to keep an ARF from being boring. LOL I ended up adding some fiberglass and epoxy to the inside of the lower cowling after cutting out the air intake. I opened up the area for the air to exit as it was too small and if you install the belly on the wing it then blocks off the air exiting the cowling. So modified this also but try to post some photos of that soon.

RE: P-47 PYLON RACER???
I just checked my Raceplane Tech book, (Bearcats and Corsairs) and it shows a photo of a P-47 back in 1947. Bill Odom entered it in the Bendix race and it sprung a fuel leak just before the event. So there went the chance to race it! Checkerboard cowling and wing tanks, it would have been cool.

Thanks full rudder for starting this thread, and it is off to a good start! Here's a picture of my old red box P-39 from a few years back that I restored. I'm going to start building a new one after first of the year (New Years resolution you know!) with a lot of new modifications. Keep building the Airacobra fellas!!!

RE: P-39 Airacobra anything thread!
Hello Spad, The "red box" version was produced in the mid seventies till the early eighties by Top Flite. These kits were sold in yellow or red boxes. Simple construction with the engine being mounted upright, 60" wingspan. Stand off scale. The "gold edition" was produced in the late ninties, updated construction, and engine mounted sideways. Designed for the Robart retracts with a larger 63" wingspan and scale flaps. A little more scale. The price of both kits are going up on ebay!

RE: New Planes from Meister-Scale
Hello PJ, I love P-40's and P-39's. The P-40B,C,D,and E had the same fuse, wing, and tail feathers. Cowling, canopy, cockpit, armament , and engine thrust lines were different. This a great multi use model and the Flying Tigers used them all. Go for it!!!!! Thanks!!!

RE: Top Flite P-39 Restoration
I am guessing that this the Red Box version and not the Gold Edition? If it is the older Red Box design, the best thing to do is replace the broken wood with new parts. I can send you templates of the parts if you like. I rebuilt most of the front section of my Red Box P-39 a few years back. I dremeled and cut out the broken sections. I then replaced all the wood except the engine mounts. It came out alot lighter than fiberglassing. I use my heat gun to remove all the Monocote. Heat and pull it off. There will still be some covering left depending on what kind of condition the Monocote was plus some adhesive on it. You can also put some lacquer thinner on a rag and wipe off old coating and adhesive off. Let it dry. Lightly sand the remaining imperfections off and fill in with balsa filler if needed. On my P-39, I covered it with silkspan and painted it. The silkspan does add some strenght to the wood and you can primer and fill in as needed. Hope this helps.

RE: Windstar EP-- Upgrade
I wasn't too happy about the take off performance with the stock motor, electrify ESC, and 1500 ma pack. It seems the wing loading is too high. So am modifing for glow power with a SIG power pod and a Cox 049 engine. I have used this alot in years past with my Gentle Lady with great sucess. I am also modifing the nose with a removable balsa piece that replaces the plastic cowling. [:@]

RE: LustreKote ~ Olive Drab Discontinued
I really liked the Coverite flat olive drab....Hobbico/Great Planes bought them out and they discontiued it. Now Lustercote! It was the only paint that matched Monocote. I wish Horizon would come out with olive drab that matched the ultra coat covering.[:@]

RE: Engine for Wing P-40b?
Hey Jim, There isn't alot of room for a larger engine and weight wise the LA and Fox .40 are almost the same. My first plane was really the best flier. I tried to keep the wing skin adhesive light ( Dave Brown), built up wing tips and cowl chin, monokote finish and DB wheels. Almost 4.7 lbs. and 5 lbs is still good with the nice finish you have on yours! Scale loops will be great. The next one I build will have a built up tail feathers and use 1/8" balsa instead of the 3/16" stuff. Send us some pictures of in flight and let me know how it flies. Thanks! Richard

RE: Engine for Wing P-40b?
Nice looking P-40 Jim. I like the way you ended the canopy just behind the windows. I have built a couple, one with a Fox .40 BB. The engine was mounted upright and had just enough scale power but could have used more. Nice thing about it was you couldn't see the muffler as easy as it was the tilt down version. The second version was powered with an OS Max .40. Again, not over powered. I would go with the lightest .42 to .46 I could find and you will be happy with it. Built light, the P-40 will have a nice long glide when landing, Make sure you reinforce the landing gear blocks with 1/16" ply wood ribs or they will bust loose on a hard landing, don't ask me how I know! Good luck and have fun. Richard.

RE: Martin wish list.
I like the B-26 also. It was called the Baltimore Whore because it had no visable means of support. It cost more to build it compared to the B-25 but it was a faster medium bomber in its day. It wasn't as forgiving as the B-25 but in the hands of an experienced pilot it could put a whuup'n on the enemy![:@]
