RE: Proctor Mini Anti-Bipe (with mods) Build Thread
Hey Steve !! I dont think the cowl should tapper down any, I think it is just streight forward from the firewall to the radiator. It sounds like your idea is fine to me the way you described it for your top cowl hatch. You could use some small brass hinges or you could just make the whole top hatch hold on and come off with earth magnets. If you want you could also put the little leather belt and buckles around the hood like the real one. I think it had two... one in front and one in back. It is looking great !! No matter what you do !! Seeya, Tim

RE: Proctor Mini Anti-Bipe (with mods) Build Thread
Looking so great Steve !! You are making me think of scratch building my Jenny !! I have some plan's by Ray Killingsworth but they are so huge !!! I am thinking of having them reduced to about the size of the Proctor plan's and scratch building it... It would probably be cheaper to build it that way but then I dont know because the Proctor kit comes with everything but the covering from what I understand... That would include all the turnbuckles, Cockpit kit and dummy engine. It doesnt include the wheels though. Anyway, you got me thinking ..lol lol lol... Keep up the great work !! Seeya, Tim

You sure are doing a nice job of turning this Antic into a Jenny !!! Seeya, Tim

RE: Dallaire Sportster questions
ORIGINAL: Strat2003 My little Speed 400 size Dallaire needs quite a bit of downthrust.....I'm guessing it's about 4 or 5 degrees, so I think 3 degrees would be a good starting point.
Thanks Strat2003 ! Your the second to say 3 degrees down ! Seeya, Tim

RE: Dallaire Sportster questions
ORIGINAL: Strat2003 Rebelion, are you familliar with the practice of double gluing, or "sizing"? On end grain joints, like the uprights in a fuselage, it helps to put a little glue on the end grain, wipe it off and let it set a little bit, then go back, apply glue, and put the part in place. I usually let it set long enough to make the next one or two pieces. The first application penetrated and seals the end grain and you end up with a much stronger joint.
Thanks for the tip !!! I was wondering, is that the way you are suposed to glue spruce ? Or do most people use epoxy ? Thanks again, I may give your sugestion a try !! Seeya, Tim

RE: Dallaire Sportster questions
ORIGINAL: w8ye With no ailerons a good measure whether your dihedral is about right is how much it banks in the turns. If you don't have enough it will sorta skid around. My friends Dallaire banked correctly with rudder/elevator in a turn I think the Dallaire is one of the best radio assisted gas free flight planes out there.
Thanks, I am not putting ailerons eather... I thought about it and I at first was putting them and Dave said he wasnt ... I was pretty much decided to go with Dave on that and I am ...lol lol lol...[;)] Thanks for the advice w8ye !! Seeya, Tim

RE: Dallaire Sportster questions
ORIGINAL: w8ye I have a friend in Opelika, AL that built a Dallaire from the Holman plans with a ASP 65 four stroke about 4 years ago. He used the prescribed dihedral and it floats around very nice. He goes up as high as he can see to control it then floats around until it gets low and then he goes up again. He does this until it runs out of fuel and he lands dead stick.
Thanks for the information !! I think that just about does it for me Dave !!... I am going with the original Dihedral...lol lol lol... Are you still starting Sunday ? I am so close with my DH 89 that I might just finnish it ... All I have left now is putting the Cowl's on and rigging it with the wires or strings I should say...lol lol lol... I do have the Cowl's made, I just got to get them on... They were a pain in the butt too !!!! The had six pieces on each Cowl !!!! Seeya guy's, Tim

RE: Dallaire Sportster questions
ORIGINAL: Sky Dart1 Dave and Tim; I built a Dallaire Sportster from a Penn Valley Hobby kit last summer, and built it with the full 9" of dihedral under each wing tip. Powered with an OS 70 four-stroke, it is a wonderful flying machine. With the dihedral as called for in the plans, it floats forever after the engine run. I can't imagine doing anything that would cause me to need more time in the sky - it will stay up on a summer evening as long as I want. My only complaint is waiting for the engine to run out of fuel so I can begin the 'silent' portion of my flight. Good luck with your builds. Ron
Thanks Ron !! What does your weigh if you know, I was curriouse about that. I am really thinking I will go with the original dihedral for sure !! I need to let Dave know ...lol lol lol... Also, I am doing the two piece wing, which did you do ? What color did you do ? If you have pictures that would be great too !!! Thanks again Seeya, Tim

RE: Dallaire Sportster questions
Hi Dave !! I am glad you decided to do get opinions here too !! It will be interesting getting thoughts from you guy's here at RCU also !! I am building the Dallaire with Dave Guy's [;)] My own that is... We both got short kits from Bob Holman. Hi John, the reason we were thinking of taking some Dihedral out is the Dallaire is actually a free flight plane isn't it ? We were thinking it may float even better being a little less dihedral ... Or at least that is what I was thinking...but I dont know, I am no expert but it just seams it would to me ... Maybe you guy's could stop us from making a mistake !!! What do you guy's think ? Dave, how does your friends turn now that he has less dihedral ? That was my only concern of changing anything. Also Dave, That front view picture you posted of your friends Dallaire is before he took dihedral out right ? Well, the reason I ask is it actually looks pretty good to me like that !!! If that picture is the recommended dihedral I may stay with it and not change nothing...lol lol lol... I know I sound like a idiot guy's going back and forth like this but I am thinking and I am wondering what you think and what you might have exsperianced...[;)] Lets build Dave !!!!...lol lol lol...[:D] Seeya, Tim

RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build
Steve, just an ideal here for you... Sense you are good at making jigs anyway you could make your jig for the shape of your rib's and stick build the ribs inside the jig just like the real rib's... That would be as light as you could get for the rib's anyway.... It would be like museum scale too when you were through.. Although your planes turn out like that anyway..... Just a thought Seeya, Tim

RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build
Steve, I have a question too. I know you know way more than me about any plane probably and for sure the SE5a but shouldnt your cap strip be more like 1/4" wide for 1/3 scale ? 1/4" wide would mean the real ribs were 3/4" wide and if you are making the cap strips 1/8" wide that would mean the real ribs were 3/8" wide. I may have just answered my own question here because I guess 3/8" wide wood would be plenty for real ribs wouldnt it... Would that be the case for my Jenny ? Another question is... Just how do you figure the width of your cap strip's on a scale build ? Did you find that information somewhere for your Se5a ? Just wandering this stuff because I will be building that Jenny someday and I really never give it much thought as to making the ribs the right thickness. Also, this tells me I went way overboard with my Bristol because I used 1/4" cap strips and it is only 1/6th scale...lol...[)] Seeya, Tim
