SIG Four Star 60 covering
For those who know the history of this plane, I have an old ARF and I think it is prior to the red aerokote years. It is a dark red, definitely not the color code for aerokote in the ARF instructions that you can find online now. So, was there a different red covering that they used on the ARF's prior to the aerokote era? Maybe its on an old instruction booklet. Please let me know if there was a different covering film used on the old models as I am patching it up and need the correct covering color.

Hey JCB i have the same problem, did you ever find out the color and covering type? It looks like a dark red , maybe monokote? or did they use oracover prior to the aerokote?

I would like to know if anyone has used the mechanical retracts for the 150 size Mustang that are sold by Horizon Hobby. I'm looking for a set that will fit my project and I came across them. Let me know if they're any good.

RE: Strange problem with Homie 30cc on gas/glow...
I had a similar problem but it was with a Zama carb. It would run for a few minutes on the gas/glow fuel and then it had real problems in the air. I would then remove the fuel from the carb before leaving the field. When I tried it again several days later the same thing happened. The carb had the original black diaphragm. After that I replaced the diaphragm with a replacement, it was still black but definitely a different material. It worked fine for about 5 or 6 flights and then something happened and it would not work at all. Anyway, after that I replaced the carb with a Walbro having a blue diaphragm and changed to EI. It has worked fine ever since then on gas/oil mix. About 25 flights with no carb problem. It might be that the diaphragm is effected by the gas/glow fuel especially when fuel is flowing at max rate. I suggest changing to a fiberglass diaphragm.

RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
I flew the plane with the new diaphragms in the Zama carb. It definitely improved the performance in that I can set the carb needles and the adjustments are steady throughout the flights. This is a big plus. I now leave the glow battery on until it warms up which takes about 2 minutes. Now I'm dealing with the mid range. It does seem to run too cold/rich in mid range. It could be the fuel. I run 2:1 gas to methanol and oil. Maybe I'll try the gas and glow fuel mixture or just gas with oil. I heard some people have had success with just gas/oil on the Poulan 25, it will definitely run hotter.

RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
FYI I received the Zama Diapragm kits today. the -12 kit came with 2 different diaphragms for the pump. One is an exact replacement and the other seems to be a fiberglass material that is almost the same color as the original but definitely a different material. Obviously I opted for the new mateiral. I think the replacement regulator diaphragm is a different material but I cannot be sure. It is the same color as the original but the texture is a bit different, that is before it sees fuel. The -27 kit has a clear pump diaphragm and an exact replacement too. I don't think the clear one is mylar more likely fiberglass as it has the texture of fiberglass. I'll give it a whirl this weekend and post results.

RE: Prop Shaft Adapter Design suggestions
Thanks for the info. I like the idea of a seperate ring for the sensor so that you can set the magnet location. I assume you just put a set screw in the ring to stop rotation. Do you have any problem tightening the prop or the adapter as it does not look like you have a way to hold the shaft during tightening.

Prop Shaft Adapter Design suggestions
I'm working on a Poulan 42 short shaft conversion with EI. Can you post some designs for your prop shaft adapters? Or maybe a source to purchase one. I have a small lathe so I can make one myself. It seems that the there may be an issue with this thing rotating off of the crank shaft if there is not a positve lock, such as a key in the 1/8'" slot that is cut into the taper.

RE: GAS/GLOW HOW TO....
I notice that the Zama carbs do not like to run on methanol. I have a Poulan 25 on gas/glow and it runs good on the first flight and then the carb goes out of wack. Happens every time I go to the field. Is there a replacement part to run methanol? I assume it is the pump valves that are the problem.

RE: Any slingshot launched gliders out there?
The Apogee is interesting. But, I was thinking more like a profile glider with the fuselage made of 1/8" plywood so that you could put a notch in the bottom . The notch would be used to hook the bungee and pull back while grasping the back of the fuse. Pretty simple concept. The actual sling shot mechanism may be the concern as I was thinking about something that would have to be set up and broken down at the field. Also, I would think that it would need to be staked into the ground. As for the Zip gliders, aren't they launched with a stick/ rubber band that you hold in your hand? How high could you get the thing with that system?

Any slingshot launched gliders out there?
I'm not talking about a kid's slingshot. I was thinking about a couple of 2 X 4 s about 6 ft high and 4 ft apart then you launch a small , let's say 28 in. ws glider using a notch in the bottom of a profile fuselage. Anything like that around?

RE: POULAN 42 cc CONVERSION HELP
Are you talking about a straight gas /oil mix? I do not have any numbers for that. The only time that I used a straight gas/oil mix was for the initial break in period which was all of 1/2 hour. I ran it rich and with the glow driver attached. It probably was running about 6700 RPM if I remember. Also, the Zama carb that is stock in the unit does have low and high needles. I had to cut slots on the needle heads so that I could use a screw driver for adjustments. A screwdriver is probably the best way to adjust the needles because you will need to make several minute adjustments.

RE: POULAN 42 cc CONVERSION HELP
Hi Twinstar, Yes ,it is the featherlite with the 4 bolt rear cover. I am running a MA 16 X 8 Classic. It runs at 7200 RPM. I'm using the stock carb. It is a bit tricky to set up. I run the low needle slightly rich. It tends to lean out in flight without it set rich. I use fuel mixed 2 qt of premium gas with 1 qt methanol and 40:1 oil

POULAN 42 cc CONVERSION HELP
I bought a used Craftsman chainsaw with a Poulan 42 cc engine. Now I'm going to convert it. Did anybody post a conversion of this engine? I need a few tips, Do I just cut off the rear shaft (not used) with a cut off wheel? I assume cut it as close to the bearing housing as possible. Next, Do I leave the carb adapter , which is angled, or put a new one on it. Also, there is a Zama carb on it. I have had a Zama on another gas/glow conversion (Poulan 25 cc) and it worked pretty good once I finally set it correctly (seems it wanted the low idle to be set rich and then it would run well in the air). Just an observaton, this has a nice mounting set up, just use a typical rail mount on the crank case studs.

RE: Turbine Engine Oil
this is good news. I hope you run these engines for several flights then disassemble for inspection. Please let us know if the ongoing flights have the same power as the first. Did you use the 15% turbine oil? As I recall, and this was almost 20 years ago when I worked for Avco Lycoming turbine division, the oil was made to mil spec 7808 so you can check the flash point and compare it to castor or synthetic glow oil. Interestingly enough 7808 did not specify synthetic or organic oil so that some was synthetic and some organic, that is, it was made with animal fat. You could always tell when you were using certain brands because in the summer heat they smelled awful.
