RE: OS Max III .15
Thanks for the article and the feedback. I will measure the venturi spigot and look for a carb with the same dimensions.

OS Max III .15
Hi guys, I recently came into possesion of an OS max III .15 engine. It has the control line venturi and is in excellent shape. I would like to make it RC and fly it. What size carb would fit this little engine? I measured the carb from an OS .10 FSR and the carb spigot is a bit too short (and thin I think). Thanks in advance.

You see, you're never too old to learn. I think I am just being paranoid. I will keep an eye on it but like you said, it is probably normal. Thanks guys for the insight and quick answers.

It is very smooth and free. I've looked for everything I could think of short of taking the engine apart.

RE: Magnum .61 RFS bottom end running temperature?
The backplate only shows slight rubbing from the conrod, but barely enough to polish the aluminium, and about the same as i have seen on other engines. Except for rubbing, what could be the cause? I was thinking maybe I'm used to 2 strokes and this is a 4 stroke quirk? what should the temp be on a properly running and setup 4 stroke?

Magnum .61 RFS bottom end running temperature?
Hi, I have a new Magnum .61 RFS 4 stroke. This is my first 4 stroke. Other than running it on the bench for about two tanks, the engine has not been used. I have installed it in a 1/5 scale cub. This afternoon I ran it for the first time in this airframe without the cowl on. I noticed after running that the bottom end of the crank case was quite hot. Not as hot as the head but almost. My other engines run with the bottom end nearly cool to the touch. Should I be concerned? I noticed the heat while running it the first couple of times and thought that it was just because it was new. I took off the back plate and everything looks normal. The crank also turns freely so the bearings seem fine. Any opinions?

RE: Hangar 9 80
Thanks guys for the replies. I ended up fitting the engine vertical and letting the muffler hang out of the cowl (couldn't find a 90 deg bend). I think it looks pretty good and it didn't take a lot of cowl cutting like this. Danflyrc, how much cooling did you give your OS? I just opened up the scale oil cooler location on the cowl. Will this be enough or do I need more?

Hangar 9 80" Cub Engine Orientation?
Hi Guys, Just got a new H9 80" cub. I haven't assembled it yet but am wondering about the engine installation orientation. H9's way will result in a large chunk of cowl that has to be cut. Im thinking either horizontal or vertical. I am running a Mag .61 4c. How did u guys mount your engines? Thanks!

RE: Evolution Glow Engine Success Story
Just my .02 on the Evo engine. I have a .36NT and the thing ran without so much as a hickup from day one. It had countless flights in two airframes with no maintenance other than cleaning the outside every now and then (castor blend). The first problem I ever had was when tho O-ring in the high-speed needle perrished. This was an easy replacement. Also, the tip on the A3 plug did make a huge difference in power and that slightly rich midrange was gone. On the bit about the tuning of engines, I have a Super Tigre G51 and is the only one at the club who flies one. The first day out with the new engine I was struggling with the midrange and one of the club engine gurus strolled over to me and asked if he could help. He then asked what engine it was and I replied Super Tigre. He then said he couldn't help me and that I should rather buy OS because everybody else has them and they are much easier to tune. This I don't understand. After I had it tuned in about 15 or so minutes it was running fine with power equal to or even more than the .55 OS. Why then do I need to buy OS? I am very much a fan of the budget "underdog" engine and I will stay that way.[:D]

To me it sounds like the egine is in an overloaded state, as if the prop is too large (which it is not). Maybe one of the bearings is in a semi-seazed state? Is the engine turning over smoothly?

Cooling could be a bit of a problem due to the way the cooling fins are orientated but on the RCV website they explain how to build ducting to adequitly cool the engine. If this is done then the engine should run well. Check it out. http://www.westonuk.co.uk/rcv%20cooling%20instructions.pdf

Seagull .46 Pilatus Porter engine question
Hi gents. I'm thinking of buying the Seagull models .46 size Pilatus Turbo Porter. The engine I am thinking of using is a Magnum .61FS AR (4C). However, seagull states that the plane was designed for .46 to .55 2-strokes or .70 to .82 4-strokes. To me it seems that a .61 4C would be enough since this is a slow flight type airfame similar to a cub. Would the Magnum .61 4-C be enough for this plane? The reason I ask is that I have the engine available and would rather buy an airframe for it than buying a new airframe and new engine. Thanks and regards, Marius

RE: First time spadder needs help!
I agree, slowly slowly. The last couple of weeks I had to do a lot of field work (I'm a geologist). The field work is quite physical so I get home totally beat and not in the mood for planes. However now I'm getting my fleet flight ready for the weekend (long weekend) so I will probably work on the spadstick next week or so.

RE: First time spadder needs help!
Thanks all for all the info and knowledge. Me thinks vinyl might be the way to go. Unfortunately the corro we get here is only white so no nice base colour to start out with. In other news, I've started building the fuse and its coming along nicely. The tip on the glue gun was a good one and it works well, giving strong, load bearing joints. For the other stuff I use contact adhesive (I'm fresh out of CA). I'll see if I can get some pics up later. Cheers Edit: Spelling

RE: First time spadder needs help!
zs6smi, Sorry for the late reply and thanks for all the info. I have seen the witblits and a lot of people fly it here. Its a bit small for my taste and I like glow. The straight flute coro is a bit of an issue. Maizeys gave me the curved ones by mistake so I ended up laminating 2mm coro to get the desired 4mm thickness. The curved stuf is good for flat wing bottoms where bending is not required. What do you use to add colour to your planes? It seems I can only find white and yellow coro here. Oh btw, I found yardsticks at archneer stationers in hatfield, pretoria. They seem to be good quality stuff, although a bit pricey. R 17.50 each. I'll check for the meranti stuff but its a bit hard for me to cut it to spec since I don't have a table saw or scroll saw. Ill also give the glue gun a try. Cheers, Marius.

Thanks for the info Clean! Have you had a spadstick before? Does the flat bottom airfoil have very diffirent performance to a semi symmetrical one? What I'm trying to get at is: is it worth it to change the wing profile? I'm just looking for a good, agile flier. RE Paint. I''l see if I can get the sign place to cover the coro in vinyl. I think this should last longer.

First time spadder needs help!
Hi Guys, This will be my first spad build and I need some help. I looked at the the plans for the the Spadstick on www.spadtothebone.com and I've decided to build it. The questions I have are: 1. What does the term "flashing" mean? 2. Is the spadsticks' wing the flat bottom type and if so, what do I have to change to make it semi- or fully-symmetrical? 3. I can only find white coroplast locally. Can coroplasted be painted to a lasting (fuelproof) finish and with what? I cant believe how cheap spads are! Makes it hard to go back to the other planes and paying so much... Thaks in advance, Marius

RE: Thunder Tiger GP-07 QUESTIONS
Many people have tried to get this engine to run properly but few have suceeded. I have one as well and its a bit of a dog. I have finally managed to get it to run fairly well on the bench using fuel with about 25% nitro and 22% oil, most of which castor. I say "about" because I couldnt find any 1/2A fuel so I added a lot of castor to 35% car fuel. It seems to work. I also tried different plugs but the best seems to be either an OS #8 or the A3. I tried some props as well and the APC 6x3 is what I use. The steps I have taken are by no means the best, but was limited to what I could find locally. There are a lot of threads but [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6720213/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm]this[/link] should have enough info for you. The engine is not a racer but works okay in general sport applications. I have mine on a DNU, an ugly stick sort of plane. Good luck and let us know.

VQ Spacewalker
Hi Guys, I have been looking for a decent sport plane since I "landed" my Sonic in a tree. Today I walked into one of the LHS's here that sells mostly electric stuff and found a .40 size VQ Spacewalker. My question is this: Does anybody here own one or have experience with one? Is it worth it to get one or no? In case I do decide to get it, which engine should I use? The engines I currently have that may work is a NIB Magnum .61 four stroke and a NIB Super Tigre G51. Would these engines be over kill on this airframe since the manual states 2 strokes of between .40 and .46 size and 4-strokes of .52 ci? Thanks, Marius.

RE: Evolution 61 Stalls going Vertical
May I make one more suggestion? On my .36 the fiitings on the remote NVA started to leak after a while (3 years). The seals on these fittings are the fibre type and they seem to go bad after some time. This caused severe leaning and all sorts of troubles. Can you see bubbles in the fuel line from the RNVA to the carb? If so, that could be a possible problem. The fix is simple, just get replacemant gaskets and seals. Hope this helps.

RE: Evolution 61
I have the .36 and it did the same thing. There is a small silicone gastket between the two parts of the muffler and this wears out with time. As the exhuast builds up heat when the engine runs, the bolt in the exhaust grows a bit and the back end of the muffler rotates as a result of the natural vibration of the engine. All I did was to put some teflon plumbers tape around the flange of the muffler to create a new seal. Also, run the engine up to operating temperature and then tighten the bolt. This will stop the back-end of the exhuast from turning. Hope this is helpfull. Good luck
