RE: Spring loaded folding props
There is no problem but I have designed a SLS The motor is supported by two supports. It rotates 90 degrees and rests between 2 supports during the fold cycle. I need to insure the prop gets folded before the motor rotates. I might add that this is a mostly scale sailplane (the SLS isnt scale).

Spring loaded folding props
I have seen videos of powered RC sailplanes using some sort of spring arrangement to fold the blades not requiring the wind to close them. Anyone have a source or if they are mods how to make them?

RE: motor for sailplane
The reason I want to keep th prop diameter on the small side is that I have designed and currently building a SLS for this sailplane and need to keep the prop on the small size in order for it to fit inside the fuse when retracted. BUT I can modify my design to rotate the motor and use a folding prop if the 8-10 inch prop is not suitable.

RE: wondering about fling
its been awhile since I assemble my hand launch fling. But I took 4 rechargeable AAA batteries (think they were 1000 ma) Using a 40 watt soldering iron I used solder braid (solder sip..radio shack) and wired them in series sand the metal ends of the batteries first. line them uo in a sort of square configeratin and tape them together + to - It helps if you tin the battery connections firs then solder the braid plus to minus on the first pair then from the other end minus to plus keep going until you have two batteries left attach battery wires to these last two. This will give you 6 volts

Yes there are thermals in the winter. All the sun has to do is warm a parking lot, roof top or something darker than the surrounding (I assume snow). Being smaller the Fling would be great for a quick run to an atheletic field for a mid afternoon flight.

RE: Flying the SIG Riser
Which weigh more your battery or the added weight? If its the added weight try putting some of thet next to the bulkhead and the battery behind that then re balance. You might lose a couple of ounces this way due to the fulcrum feffect. The farther the weight is from a fulcum the heavier it acts think of a see saw with a light kid and a heavy kid put the light kid farther from the fulcrum and he will offset the heavy kids weight . Probably the best author to read on soaring , cg and trim is Aejars. He knows his stuff. By the way It will work out best to get the plane to fly level with neutral control trim. Then you can use Aejars tricks to make it fly perfect! Re commended CG is a safe starting point best soaring cg is much different. The closer you get to the best position the squirially the plane will "feel" Ideally you will be flying just above stall speed so trurning becomes an issue.

RE: Looking for Newbie pilots to explain why you suggest motors on gliders?
The habit of people telling others what they should do is not limited to our hobby. I flew full sized sailplanes for awhile. Others always told me I should fly power...fly a real airplane...so I can go somewhere etc When I got into sailing "too bad you dont have a power boat so you can go fishing, skiing, go fast. The short time I fished out of a power boat : You should get a kayak, Youy should get a sailboat. I had a kayak Igot rammed by a power boat You should get an ambulance. I had a physics proffessor who loved to respond to students questions: "If you have to ask the question you cannot possibly understand the answer" I think this answer applies to the original question and would be an excellent response to any who question you about your choices.

Isn't that a great feeling. Seeing your "stick built do its thing" You can be proud. After a couple of more flights you can work on her trim and start taking a little weight out . See the many threads on trimming (here and RCgroups) so you can get the sailplane to thermal really well.

RE: Fling fun - Oh my god I love this.
I dont know but most sailplanes I have built or heard of (both kits and arf ) seem very tail heavy. I had to put 8 oz of lead in the Vista to get it to the recommended CG thats with the nicads as far forward as I could get them.Even the Radian was slightly tail heavy based on the recommended cg. It did however fly great out of the box. The Vista does fly and thermal well. I know its scary lauching a plane the first time but IF it balances at the recommended cg it will fly and probably be just fine. Of course the more weight you carry the faster it flies and at least on a no thermal day the faster it will come down. You might try moving the batterry forward and dumping some nose weight. At least the battery is useful weight.

RE: Fling fun - Oh my god I love this.
I had a Fling handlaunch with its mini high start also have a 2 meter fling with a standard high start. . I like them both but the top meter is easier to fly. I also have a Vista and a Radian Pro. Of those two the Pro is the easiest to fly though the Vista thermals better. The thing about larger sailplanes, especially if you are just starting out is a standard high start gets you higher and you have more time to fly around and learn. Of course the Radian(s) being motorized you can power up as high as you dare and then shut the motor off and play around. Being another O.F. I am afraid the conveniance of electric assisted launch is very much of a good thing to the pont where I am motorizing the Vista and the Fling two meter. On the Pro I get 5 launches to about 800 feet before I recharge. Watch out for tip stalls on the Fling too slow and a turn can spell cause bad spins

RE: Radian Pro balance issue
You know other forums have reported this. I had to stuff my parkzone 1300 ma (stock unit) as far back as I could push it to get it to balance at 77 mm back from leading edge. Right out of the box with everything placed where instructed the battery was about perfectly in its area and the plane flew very well at 70 mm. Flies better at 77 mm though. Who knows maybe they increased the density of the foam aft of the wing or maybe added something to stiffen things up. As far as Horizon response goes I am and have always been pleased . Maybe they are just fed up with the Radian Pro. I know its frustrating but the plane flys well once set up. I am starting to wish I had waited. Now Tower has a hunder Tiger Soaring Star...NOT A FOAMIE that I bet flies better.

I might be crazy but
Having a Radian Pro (my first electric sailplane and first foamy) I have become hooked on full house and electriv. The crazy part. I have taken my 2 meter Fling sawed through the wings at the dihehedrals reassembeled with a flat center and very slight amount of poly at the tips (a liitle less than the Pro). Instaled 4 servos for ailerons and flaps. While I am at it and not being knowledgable of electrics I want a motor and a battery that will fit in the nose and give a good climb . Anyone want to offer motor lipo and prop suggestions. I am preparared to cut a slot in the middle of the wing bottom to stick part of the battery in. Also any suggestions for wing mounting other than rubber bands. I actually need a how more trhan just the word "screws" By the way the fling already has nice holes for servo wires. And where I have rejoined the wings I have short piece of carbon rod along the spar (arrow shaft)

RE: Radian foam fix? What glue to use?
park Zone says normal medium CA. I used epoxy but others use the CA by speaying one surface with CA kicker then the other they put the CA. Push together and its stronger than foam.

RE: Radian Pro - A new e-glider from Parkzone
I think I am responsible on the RTF / radio included question...my bad....I used the term ready to fly when I should have said bind and fly (BNF). The BNF comes with rcvr, charger and battery. You would have to own a compatable Xmitter to use this version. I can tell you the Park Zone charger and battery is around $60 incl shipping from Horizon. My wife ordered the plug and play version which doesnt include battery, charger and rcvr. My LHS did not have a plug and play but told wife that they woulde remove those parts. I ordered the charger and battery prior to gettintg my gift. On opening the model the battery , radio and charger were still included. Guess I was lucky. I called and asked if they wanted theses parts they declined. In my opinion for someone starting out the original Radion that has the radio chargers etc included is a good buy however be aware that the original probably has a 3 channel radio which may or may not be useful later. I also suggest you talk to your son to be sure he is glider oriented. If not I suggest a good electric power plane. My son at 15 never would have wanted a glider as he had the "need for speed" . I doubt that even at his current age of 30 he would be much different. I might add that if you know you are going to be really into sailplanes to the point of entering contests etc buy as much radio as you can afford. That means a computer radio. When I started I bought a 6 channel computer thinking that a sailplane couldnt possibvly need more. But now I wish I had gotten a high enf 8-10 channel. Aeajr has proven you can get most functions out of a 6 channel but you have to ber creative. I managed to get ailerons flaps and crow out of mine. Took me about 6 hrs to do it though. (Airtronics RD6000).

RE: Radian Pro - A new e-glider from Parkzone
Aeajr: Can you think of any reason the motor on my pro (new) won't run on either flap switch or gear switch. Seems to work most of the time on the throttle channel provided I get the servo limits to +125%. Airtronics radio. Spare servo works on both of those channels. I really want to set it on one of the switches since the rudder is on the same stick as the throttle and I prefer to not have to worry about the motor turning on when I move the rudder (flaps moving wont bother me). Also is one of the aileron servos mounted backward from the other so the ailerons move on opposit directions? I get the stangest movements when I tried the flaperon mix..thinking I could get crow and/or camber out of it. Neither aileron act as ailerons when flaps are selected..they become pure flaps. With that switch off only one aileron moves at a time the other stops at neutral (neither move up both move down but not at same time. Gues iNeed to just plug servos in seperate from the airplane Since it is to cumbersome to play with with the wings installed. Thanks Mike

RE: Radian Pro - A new e-glider from Parkzone
I have a Radian Pro and an Airtronics 6 ch system 72 MHz . I was able to put my 6 ch rcvr in the pro. I had to remove some foam to get it deep enough but it fits well. There are two leads on the ESC one plugs into the rcvr usually on the throttle but being a glider person following Aeajrs advice put it on the landing gear switch. Its just full on or off. For someone starting out I would suggest the original Radian. Its 3 channel and very stable probably a better sailplane than the Pro. But as far as the Pro goes the jury is still out on the motor. There are people that say the motor has issues and an equal number that claim thy are great. You can get a better prop which solves a lot of complaints. After thinking awhile I think I can get all of the Pros features to work on the Airtronics. I have the flaps assigned to the throttle . This radio has a engine cut off button that would move a throttle servo a few more mm I think that wil give me flaps with reflex. I think I can use the built in "flaperon" mix to give me crow andf camber on the ailerons. I have to buy some servo extensions to try this out. May lose the coupled rudder aileron mix in doing so but we will see. I will report the set up if it works. If my son wanted to learn I would buy the original Radian BNF since it has a radio included supposed to fly out of the box. The plug in play does not include radio, charger or battery basically for the price of a battery and charger you have paid for the BNF version.. . Read Aejr's postings both on this sight an the rcgroups.com sight. The guy is brilliant!
