RE: Reaction X issue
I put the front end in the sun for a couple of hours, then whacked it a few times. Adhesive from the formers was on the mating surfaces of the cone and fuse. Luckily not a lot. No big deal, just wasted time. Thanks again, Tim

RE: Reaction X issue
yeah, I have held the joint over my thigh and smacked the nose pretty hard, rotating 360 to hit from all sides. Hopefully its just some stuck paint but not sure how to soften it without damaging the surrounding paint. I suppose its possible the nose was put on at the factory before the fuse paint was fully cured.

Reaction X issue
Hey fellas, I'm finally getting around to assembling this jet that I've had NIB for months. Just started working on the front end and discovered after removing the hex bolt in the nose, that the nose cone will not come off. The seam with the fuse is nice and tight, as if glued. Anybody run into this or have an idea how to get the thing off? Thanks a bunch, Tim

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
Ed you said it with the laser cutting. I won't forget how much fun it was cutting 1/4 in hard balsa with an X'ACTO knife. But 30 years ago thats all I had! Thankfully the two Kougars I cut next with a bandsaw. Building is not for everybody I guess, but I enjoy cutting, carving and gluing. Also, it feels different when you are flying something that you built yourself. I like my big ARF's too.... but wish I had more time to build. Wish SIG still had Core Bond glue for foam wings!

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
My first kit and plane I learned to fly with(Long time ago.....), was a Goldberg Falcon 56. BUT, my 2nd plane was a Sig Kougar. Covered and K&B epoxy paint. It was nearly indestructible. Another Kougar after that one and got years on that one too. Then a Kadet to relax with and a Kobra. Good solid kits and good flyers. If I thought it would help save Sig, (if they are in trouble), I would buy the big Spacewalker kit. Even though, I don't know when I would build it! I see most or all of you that have chimed in are kit builders. I was too for a long time and would not fly anything I didnt build. But, I'm afraid now that part of what may be wrong is not enough kit builders left. I hope what Ken heard was right, and that Sig is just hunting for a decent builder for their ARF's. The big 4* would be nice I think. Everything I've ever gotten from Sig was great.

RE: Starter for gas engine
For years and years I started every engine glow and gas by flipping by hand. Whether its glow or gas, if the fuel is there and the heat or spark is there, its gonna run or at least pop. My gas planes are all 50cc and up. First start of the day is perhaps 6 flips with choke on, then 1 or 2 with choke off. One flip the rest of the day. BUT, I dont do that anymore.....one engine had a flaky ignition and was getting hard to start and would not idle. Well it popped back in the middle of a flip and just about cut my middle finger off. Since then I have used a belt reduction on a Sullivan Dynatron at 24V for gassers. Spins about 2100 rpm. But as was mentioned earlier in this thread, if all else is correct, the the engine only needs a bump from the starter.

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
Good News! Finally got the maiden out of the way. Also a second flight after some trimming and HS needle work. Second flight was great, no pitching/porpoising or any of that. Half flaps and full were uneventful with no mixing required. Like all of you have said, this thing flies great. Our local warbird expert got his hands on it for a couple of minutes and was so comfortable high speed passes were immediate. Vertical is almost unlimited, and huge loops were easy. I was pleasantly surprised with both landings. Very refreshing after flying lightly loaded aerobats for the last few years. It felt nice to have enough weight to not float in Ok so now I'm really wanting Tom's idea of a Spitfire!

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
I know it sounds big for this plane, but I had it laying around NIB for 7 years, so decided to put the Taurus 69 in this plane. It weighs at least 1.5lb more than the DA-50 or DLE55. Also, I have a custom Jtec pitts muffler which is on the heavy side due to the way it was made to fit this combo. Sorta surprised today when I finally weighed it all and came up with right at 21lb. I havent had to add any lead. If the new digital scale is accurate, I think I will be fine. The initial run of the engine was with a XOAR 23 X 8 and was spun like a toothpick. It has a 22B VESS on it now which I will use for maiden flight. Was going to fly maiden today, but went to bed sick and woke up sick..... will post once yet another WH Hellcat has flown!

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
It so happens that the wing bolt issue was found at the field this weekend. I put 1/4-20 blind nuts in last night as even with 1/4-20 bolts I had on hand(not the ones in the kit), there was plenty of slop. Now its all snug like I would expect. So at 23lb yours flies fine. I will weigh mine tonight. Thanks for that info on the balance. I'm not adding any lead, just moving the rx battery around to balance. Oh, one last question, what prop are you guys using? I put a 22" on just to crank the engine and found relatively little clearance. Perhaps 20" 3 blade? Thanks fellas, good luck to you all. Tim

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
Congrats on that first flight. You did a great job on that covering and finishing. Have you weighed your plane now that it is balanced? I'm using a much heavier engine than most of you. Short cowl, and moved engine mount 9/16" behind original firewall because of engine length and weight. My plane was one of the first ones shipped but I did not get it finished and out to the field until today(no graphics yet). Engine and radio test fine, but issues with wing bolts. My real concern is with the overall weight and the CG. I used Tom's method with the wing tube. I used lead weight right around or just ahead of the stab spar(8oz), to get to a point where it would sit level. If I tilted it to the tail or the nose, it would fall in that direction. I too would like a solid measurement off of a plane that has flown, also to know average AUW. I've not weighed mine yet, but it really feels heavy. Everyone that has posted on this plane has been successful. I'm the only one I know using a heavier engine than a DLE or DA. But, I'm not adding any lead to the nose either. Good luck to all of you, and lets all hope things improve so Tom can start pushing out planes again. I really want that Spitfire!

RE: New Turbine Engine Company-Xtreme Turbines!!!
Before I opened this thread, I was excited somewhat about a "new" turbine Co. and turbine. The opening by Xtreme was lacking in sophistication sure. I wasn't impressed with it either. All of you are more knowledgeable than me as I am a turbine newbie and have only a JC Cheetah. You may all be correct that the pictured engine is built from older designed parts and is simply renamed. Sure questions should be asked, and answers expected. At the same time, this guy was beaten to the ground in a hurry. I agree with the gentleman from Y/A and think some comments were almost attacks. I also think that the market works. The top selling turbines are top selling because of proven performance and service. Xtreme should be allowed to survive or fail on those two points, not killed out of the gate. I'm glad Modelbau Uk chimed in. Before I got my first jet and turbine, I read with much interest the threads on the Tornado. The attacks were so bad that the folks behind Modelbau just about quit the RC hobby division of their business. They decided to continue, and the Tornado has gone thru improvements and has become very popular. Again, the market works. Oh and Andy, I must say I agree 100% with that last line on your posts...perfect.....

RE: sorry, can't keep my mouth shut about this
I'm sure what has been said in this thread is true. Some mfg's change designs or drop engines with some frequency. To a large degree, its becoming a throw away world. Planned obsolescence. I do have a DLE, that I havent run yet.....3W's and DA's. I have worn out bearings on 3W's and DA's and had NO issues getting parts or service. By the way, to wear those out took hundreds of flights..... If service and parts availability is important, then expect to pay a bit more to get it. I spend all my time at the field either running my mouth with buddies or flying. I don't have time for engine issues, or energy for the frustration that goes with it. If its a matter of money, consider this; your time is worth something. Your enjoyment is worth something. A good warranty is worth something. Knowing there will be someone on the other end of the phone when you need help is worth something. How many $$ is all that worth? Someone mentioned Mintor....yes they look great, and are light and reasonably priced. I just mentioned the 38 cc to a flying buddy today, as he has finally worn out his Brison 2.4. Its been a fantastic engine. BUT, uh oh, he's not having such good luck finding parts...........He got that Brison when I got my first DA 50. The Brison yes is only a 39cc, but it was almost $200 less than the DA. Over the almost 7 years we have had those two engines, do you think that extra $200 I paid bothers me at all? Not the best comparison I know but..... I dont have any issue getting parts. I think DLE has themselves straightened out now, and ValleyView has been great for my flying buddies that use them. Sure some folks have luck with some of the not so popular and "inexpensive" engines, and we would all like a good deal. But if you pay 3/5's or more of the price for say a DLE, DA, etc.. for one of those, then get spotty performance from it, or no service when you need it, is that a great deal? There are no guaranties, but I'm not a gambler. So I go with the "surer" bets, and low and behold, they are usually less expensive in the long run, and give me much more enjoyment. I'm frankly disgusted with the fact that so much mfg has gone overseas. I also feel sorry for my buddy with the Brison "that used to be made in the USA", and the poster of this thread. Made in the USA used to mean something. Many countries make fine products and back them up. There are a few mfgs' in the US that make quality stuff. But, as with everything..... "If you want good, clean, fresh oats, expect to pay a fair price. If you will settle for oats that have already been through the horse, the price will be substantially less"

RE: Best Kit for First Build
As far as power, you have many options. Personally, I prefer fuel or gas. The LT-40 will fly just fine on any .46 size 2 stroke glow engine. If low price is important, then the Thunder Tiger .46 Pro may be a good choice. Generally I have been partial to OS brand engines for most of 30 years. They have a good .46 size engine. Fit, finish and overall design is second to none. But a bit more expensive. SuperTigre offers decent engines at a decent price. They have a .45 that is inexpensive. These are all 2 stroke engines, that are easier to maintain than 4 strokes, and are less expensive. Four strokes are nice, but heavier, more expensive, and require periodic valve adjustment. So, for 1st timer, I recommend 2 stroke glow. I have experience with all the above engines and manufacturers as well, and most 2 strokes now available will work fine for you as long as.... You follow the operators manual closely. That means: Have a solid mount. Use fresh fuel of proper oil and nitro content. Personally, I have great luck with Morgan Fuels Cool Power 15%. If you cant trust yourself to not run the engine lean, then please use Morgan Fuels Omega. It runs a little dirtier, but protects perhaps better. Use balanced props in the recommended sizes. Most .46's will run fine with 10 X 6 up to 12 X 7(in the case of the OS) props. The 10 X 6 or 11 X 7 would probably be best to start with. Both wood and composite props will work. For a trainer this size I would use an APC brand prop. Be patient and follow the manuals break in procedure. DO NOT EVER run the engine lean. If you need more power, get a bigger engine. DO NOT start the engine with your finger. Use a starter or a chicken stick. (In the event you go with the OS .46AX, do yourself a favor and get a FOX RC LONG glow plug.) There are many options with power. Part of the beauty of this great hobby. So many options. It can be hard to pick planes and engines. You have picked a solid first plane. To make the engine choice easy.....just get the OS .46AX! Of course, some will say, "go with a .61 engine now so you dont have to buy another one for your next plane". Well yes, but I would keep that trainer intact no matter what the next plane is. Its good to have at least two planes in the hangar....... Congrats on your decision to build and progress in this hobby

RE: How close is Realflight to turbine flying??
I certainly agree with the "no fear of crashing" statement, whether the pockets are deep or not, or the airframe is expensive or not. Lack of confidence can be as deadly as lack of ability. Thats not to say arrogance is good... As far as the orientation thing...I find that easier in person than on the sim! I have noticed my game addicted son wanting to throw the sticks to the max as File IFR said. When I coach him, he flies the sim just fine. So, we can't get the pucker factor in the sims....other than that, how do we make them more realistic? Are the guys modeling these things really that far off?

RE: How close is Realflight to turbine flying??
Yeah, this is an old dead thread, but I just found it! Hadnt used my RF5 for 2 years but used it now to test my new PC. As I'm putting together my first jet, (PST Reaction), I wanted to check out some jets. Primary jets at our field are KingCats, so I got that added. Well, it was sorta what I expected, carries speed, turbo lag, must use elevator to bleed speed, come in as nose high as possible, etc.. etc....landing it felt a lot like one of my old favorites...heavy, painted tuned pipe Sig Kougar.... I could get so slow that my elevator just about quit working, but power it in. I am sorta disappointed to read this thread and that RF is not very accurate at all with the KingCat, or perhaps any jets. My feeling was that if I got used to the KingCat, the real Reaction would seem more comfortable. I know they are NOT the same plane. But, flying and landing the KingCat on RF is NOT the same as flying and landing a 50cc YAK or Extra or even a Stik on RF. The expectation is that any jet will be harder to fly and land than any of those. And, it is. Well, flying the KC is not hard. Like some of you, I have been flying for 30 years or so, but not jets. I have found RF to be fairly close on the prop sport planes that I have flown in reality. I'll try loading the KC down for more practice, as with the default settings, it seemed fairly easy to put it on the runway short enough to use brakes. Just sorta disappointed....

RE: CLEVIS FAILURE :Quicker than you can count to Three
I just got my first jet, and was somewhat dismayed that it had single horns. I'm used to doubles on all my gassers. Granted they have big surfaces, but its nice to have that security and a bolt for a pin. There are a few KingCats at our field but I never noticed that they had single horns. I guess jets have gotten away with this for a long time and 99.9% of the time are just fine. I don't know what to do now with my jet. Does anyone know of a glue in horn that has a bearing, and a clevis that is big enough for a bolt?

RE: Electric Retracts - Why don't we have them for Turbines?
Howdy Tom. I think the same thing about those Electrons. Machining, materials and overall design is very impressive. I wanted the Ultra Flash, but our local Jet expert suggested the PST Reaction as my first jet so thats what I got. I hope that the UF will be the 2nd jet. I'm hoping I can use the same retracts I got for the PST in the UF just by changing struts. If even that is necessary. I havent even powered my retracts up yet. I may do that this evening and try to get a vid to post. Tom, you tried yours on the bench yet? Anybody got any info on those reported Electron brakes?

RE: Electric Retracts - Why don't we have them for Turbines?
Like you Pete, I dislike all the airlines, valves etc.... I use them on 50cc warbirds. I also have used Lado's straight and rotating retracts. Very nice. The lado's are in TF and H9 warbirds and are a breeze to use, and I have used them off the rx pack no issues. I do however use premium packs, not just large stated capacity, and have had zero issues. The current electronic circuitry eliminates any issues as far as current drain or damage if gear is jammed. They are heavier than the supplied gear but we are talking apples and rotten oranges here. I just got my first jet. I like tidy installs and wanted this jet simple and clean. Because I dislike all the tubing, valves and air tank, I pieced together a full set up using Dreamworks (Prolink) struts and Electron retracts, but still have air brakes and proportional valve. Thats ok. Two tubes are cleaner than 8. The Electron retracts are almost too nice to hide in the plane. They come with an electronic controller that will also control brakes, and allow for separate bat. If I had had retracts for the jet already, I probably would have used D&L and converted them. I talked to them first, and they have some great stuff coming. I'm sure most of you jet guys have seen them already......http://dreamworksrc.com/catalog/electron-electric-retract-gear-tiller-steer-p-1978.html I haven't done electric propulsion yet, but will watch the electric retracts options very closely. The electronic controls and batteries were not up to the task in years past....thats all over now. We'll all just have more options now...air or electronic....take your pic....

RE: Retract Game Changer
Bob you hit a bunch of nails on the head. RC products are no different than many others. There are many market levels. Some manufacturers innovate, take pride in their products, and truly back them up. That takes time and money. Sometimes these manufactures send their production to countries with cheaper production costs, but use same designs, processes and materials to maintain quality and reputation. Some are willing to pay for that level of service and quality and some are not. Manufacturers and retailers may offer several lines of similar products to hit more market levels. Some products work well for a week, some for a lifetime. This thread is about retracts. I've got lousy ones and good ones. The good ones always cost more. The electronic retracts and trailing struts I got from, ok, Todd at DW, are the finest quality I have seen. DW has a great reputation, that means something to me. I'm not connected to DW in any way, but appreciate the VERY timely service I have gotten, and so far, I have not seen electric retracts supporting the weight I need anywhere else. There are other good retracts and distributors. Its up to the consumer. The retracts that this thread is supposed to be about may be just great. It would be nice to hear from some folks who have longtime experience with other brands that have also tried these. The political and national things don't belong in this thread. But since it was mentioned........ Countries and cultures are diverse. Different countries seem to have a knack for creating great products of various types, and have many things to offer. Many countries have been enemies in history but are now allies. I'm nobody but I'm glad to have Canada, the UK, Japan, and any others that generally respect their citizens as allies. In the US, we need to wise up and vote all the bums out. Doesnt matter which side of the isle. Just vote from a standpoint of knowledge and understanding. Get out of your own box, do some research and see reality. Many countries need to do the same thing. Just as with RC stuff, realize there is no free lunch. Can we keep it on RC now?

RE: HobbyKing - Good or Bad
You said it. Its one thing to gamble with your own money. Another to gamble with safety. As long as its apples and apples, get it for as little as you can. But, a flying buddy has used HK servos and rx's. Also cheaper 50cc gas engines. He has some success. He is a good pilot, but has lost many planes due to deadsticks, bad batteries and servos. Not to mention much more frequent issues in the pits just to get his stuff up in the air.

RE: HobbyKing - Good or Bad
I wonder if those two F-86's are identical products? If so, oh yes, no question where to get it. I'm certain most RC stuff has huge markups. Why does a JR/FUT/Hitec 12" extension cost $8? Most all products of any type are priced to what the market will bear. Someone on this thread already said that what looks like a great deal frequently isnt. I agree. I also agree that its a real shame what the Internet has done to many LHS's. When someone proves that a metal gear servo that advertises 220 oz/in at $15 is as good a quality as a JR, Futaba, or Hitec of similar strength and speed, I MIGHT try one. But not on a jet. Sure name brands are marked up, but I'd rather pay the extra than take a chance. I wonder what it really does cost to produce digital servos?

RE: Retract Game Changer
If they are at least 6061 and will hold a 1/2" strut, not a bad deal at all. Retrofitting air retracts with electric actuators isnt inexpensive yet, and perhaps these folks will create a decent electric version. The electric setup I just got is VERY nice machined from 7075. Just would like to have a less expensive electric setup for the next project. Perhaps if electrics for say 25LB and up become more common, prices will come down.

RE: Retract Game Changer
I just got the same ones from Todd last week. I decided that on my first jet, I would bypass the mess and effort of air on retracts. Yes, not inexpensive, but absolutely the best machine work and strength I have seen in model retracts. Yes I know the retracts mentioned are not intended for the same use. We have a flying buddy who is always looking for a "bargain" and has bought from some outfits stating great products at great prices. We love the guy, but poor fella, he spends the vast majority of his time fiddling with stuff trying to make chicken salad out of chicken s#$t. The rest of us spend most of our time flying or jawing with each other. He has been in the hobby a long time, and does reasonable builds, but skimps on servos, rx's and engines. He is always having equipment failures, and crashed planes when he does get in the air. I agree that some RC stuff could be well made and be less expensive than it is. At the same time, I have a big Hawker Hurricane from a popular mfg, that came with retracts. Price seemed ok. Flies so-so, but retracts are crap. Less expensive hardware has bitten me a couple of times in my 30 some odd years in the hobby. For this 1st jet, I didnt want to play around trying to save a dollar or 3, and got retracts and struts from Todd, practically a guarantee of success with minimal headache, and assured support. If wide use of the retracts in this article prove them to stand up and be somewhat trouble free, I MAY even try them. Many engines from a certain country have been mostly short lived, poor performing, junk. This issue has changed a bit with DLE for example. Decent engine at decent price. Retracts may follow suit. Competition is great for our hobby. We would all love to get reasonable quality for less than most of us pay. In my experience, going for quality rather than price frequently ends up being less expensive. Just my long winded 80 cents worth....

That is a bit scary. I have a JR9303 with the 2.4 module. Never any issues. But thinking of using it with my first jet, and more channels would make my setup easier. So was thinking of getting the 12X and using a 1221. I've used JR for years and no issues. I'm on the fence with this first jet. Somebody chime in and say there are no issues with the 12X or 1221 please. I'm sure many folks are using this combo with no issues.

RE: Where's PST Jets?
I just got a Reaction X from them last month. I hope PST is just out of touch short term and not something worse. I may need spares.....

RE: Hellcat F6F Wild Hare RC - G-Pete's build and review
what do you mean there wont be any more around? Tom's not getting any more? Lucky I was on the list very early. Its been very hard to find time to work on mine. Almost finished. All you fellas have done fantastic jobs on yours. Mine will look pretty much standard. Thats ok, I just wanna FLY the thing! I hope Tom does bring out a Spit or two. 20 or 30cc as Tom hinted last year.
