champion 5843 plug
does anyone know if the champion 5843 is a resistor type plug? I bought a couple from Pep Boys and was thinking of using it in my MLD.Hate to find out that it isn't when the plane is up in the air!! Thanks

RE: Strange sound
BTW saitos are nice but they are rust buckets.you need to flush them out when you don't fly often or put in lots of after run oil. i got tired of changing bearings that i switched to ceramics long ago. i flush my engines regularly as i am very particular about how my engine looks inside and out.

RE: Strange sound
Coming back to topic.Selnekav, you said the sucking noise happens after leaving the engine running for a while at idle.OK, it could be oil trapped in your breather tube or you're running the idle a bit rich causing residual fuel in the carb thus making the sucking noise. I would explore that first before i strip the engine. If the bearing is shot, it would be noisy at the start to finish of the engine run.

RE: Enya 53 older style, poor idle
the enya 53s that I bought in japan way back in the early 90s i think. list price was 28000yen then. Was a powerhouse then and much better throttling than the os 48 surpass even without muffler pressure.

RE: Enya 53 older style, poor idle
Well hobbsy, my 53s are the older version not the black rocker cased TN version. Mine comes with 2 exhaust pipes. One for running without muffler and the other longer one for attaching the muffler to. It is not a good idea to fix a presssure tap to the old type muffler as the muffler attachment is a clamp on type to the pipe which can cause erratic running due to the poor seal.Thats why the newer version muffler is a screw on type for a better seal. My 46 II, 41 and 53s all seem to share the same mufflers and carb.

RE: Enya 53 older style, poor idle
Well i can tell you I have 3 nib older enya53s still in their original boxes and they don't have pressure taps on the mufflers.I bought them in japan a long while back and used only one out of 4 I purchased. Each engine came with comprehensive tools and accessories like a head gasket/shim to lower compression. And the engine doesn't need muffler pressure to run real well.I flew one without the muffler and I can tell you they sound great! Now my question is , did enya change the cams on the later model 53s for better performance other than the carb. The enya airbleed carbs are really good compared to others.

RE: Don't need no stinkin' after run oil!
in this age where most modellers are running higher nitro fuels and synthetic oils compared to the good old days of straight or low nitro fuels and castor oil, its no wonder that corrosion is an issue especially when we are still using steel bearings and nonrust resisitant steel cranks. With the money that we pay i don't see why engine manufacturers can't put in ceramic bearings and rust resistant cranks. The engine manufacturers definitely know the problem but they don't seem to be doing any thing really meaningful to address it.

the saito 40 is snazzier looking with the new shape cambox design! purrs like a kitten and lightweight. my other fav engine is the saito 62- a real gem -very low vibration, unfortunately not very popular prob becos it lies close to the 72/82 engine.

RE: New Thunder Tiger 4 strokes
Well, that sums it up well for the 130s.Great looking engine, questionable engineering.I had issues with the glow plug thread, back firing with the throttle pulled back, suction feed in inverted recovery etc. And the noise- a result of the thin walled muffler and no baffles. None of my saito and os mufflers fit.its a different size.I reckon its a rev happy engine so it doesn't like to be loaded too much. Since pulling it out and installing a 26 cc gas burner, all my problems are solved. my 2 130s are boxed and shelved.

Well I had a Saito 125 make mincemeat of my third right finger about half a year back. APC 16x6 . Sliced off a portion of the finger. Up till today , I still have numbness in that finger. I have a phobia hand starting engines right now especially APC props. In fact I avoid using APC props nowadays.A moments inattention and you pay for it permanently.

RE: Help about OS FS a-110-P
A lot of good advice here from the forummers. Another thing you need to know too is that a pumped engine like yours will run happily at lean settings until it is too late.So I would use a tach to tune that engine. Like what the others have said, once you have peaked it, richen by 300rpm.

RE: Help about OS FS a-110-P
the rpm you are getting with a 15x8 is in the lower range of the engine. But expect rpm to be in the lower 8k+ band for this prop size. If the head is very hot, then there cud be some seizing or maybe your fuel is not providing enuff lubrication. If after inspection, you can't detect anything wrong and the engine behaves itself, then try a 14x8 JXF or APC. You can expect to get about 9200rpm with this setup. My 110 gave me 9200 on 10%nitro and JXF prop. This engine likes to be close to the 9k band. Engines with a pump setup normally requires less needle valve turns than a non pumped engine.Hope this helps

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Failure
I had metal flashings in the carb and a plug thread that wasn't deep enough in my 130.Power was more than the saito 125 although it was happier with a smaller prop. The engine somehow wasn't comfortable in the same position as a 125 inverted and i had numerous issues of it dying in negative G maneuvers. The engine started backfiring after 5 flights and I figured I had had enough! Took it out and installed a crrc 26cc gasser and the plane has never been better.

The early orbit 7-14D had really awful sticks. I have one and I can't imagine how we modellers could fly with those sticks! You really need strong fingers and thumbs to move them well.

RE: 180FS Glow to Gas
I'd go 9mm for the carb for better transitions and less loading up on larger props. The RPMs would favour that size bore. I did a gas conversion for my asp180, using 16:1 mix and used the original carb as I did not have an adapter for a walbro. The carb was sensitive and the motor ran hot.In fact it quit because of overheating. I am wondering if you added any shims to lower the compression. I'd like to have another go at it with a walbro.Any chance you'd be able to show the adapter you've made for the walbro? it looks really well made.

Looks like a engine by a taiwanese company, Super Flying Model. They used to sell engines under their brand name for a while. I don't think they manufactured them. That engine looks familiar.

Yes, i run mine on 15% wildcat with a 13x4W apc. Very decent power.Hovers the phoenix funstar on half power with power to punch out.A 14x4W is a bit too much.I use that prop size for my 63. The prop shaft has a smaller diameter than the 63 and prone to bending!!

RE: Saito 100 Velocity stack!
I wouldn't throw away good money for these velocity stacks. No perceivable gains and if wrongly fitted or not the right size, it may even cause a loss of power.Happened to my 82. The other thing is the stack detaches quite readily from the black mount base.It is friction mounted, no welds or glue. Its kinda short too to be effective.Wish they'd do something like what OS did but then the saito carb has no throat. In summary,it is just a piece of aluminium tubing cut off ,flared and mounted on a base. The space to be filled by your own O ring was actually there for a choke which was provided in the earlier models.

RE: SPE 26, whats the story?
Engine is discontinued and replaced by the MLD28 which is a far better engine. The 26 had QC issues.I had one and the performance was abysmal.Compression was poor because of the poor parts fit and the crankshaft was not totally straight so vibration levels were high.I junked the engine eventually and got myself a mld28 and never looked back. Another good 26cc engine to consider is the rcgf26 which sells for $140/- from hobbycity.

RE: Glow Plug Ignitor
Best to keep it simple, so a mcdaniel type of headlock glow igniter lasts a long time and stay on in inverted positions. The grip lock system tends to fall off easily under the weight of the attached battery. The worst investment ever was a rcats glow ignitor system.I had to replace the lithiums when they failed. After the second one failed in a week, I checked and found the system was draining 50ma continuously.Good money down the tubes.

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
I have a different opinion as to the power of the TT130. Let me digress a bit. My saito 115 out turns my OS110a with a 14x8 JXF by about 200~300rpm.The 115 is overshadowed by the saito125 turning a 15x8 or 16x6apc. Finally , the TT130 out turns the saito 125 by a bit. Thats how i arrived at the conclusion thru' my own experience. I suppose if you underprop the bigger engines , you will end up with a different set of figures which doesn't do justice to the bigger capacity. I have found put too that the TT130s is a rev happy engine and doesn't like to be loaded down. As I've said, it is a very good value for the money engine and should last for many years of flying.

RE: .61 hanno ?
The difference is in the port timing. As pointed out, the Hanno special was designed to turn at a lower rpm range with a 12x12 asano, long tuned pipe and 20%nitro. The carb is of a smaller bore than the usual. In terms of absolute horse power, the 61RF was more powerful but the hanno had more lugging power coupled with linear response in the 9000 band i.e better torque. The engine has to be set up properly to optimise its power and it could be temperamental in the wrong hands thats why some people swear that its one of the worst engines that OS has made!! I still have 2 of these NIB along with a webra 61 rear exhaust redhead with dynamix carb lang stroke which was supposed to be better!! Hate the dynamix though.

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
I get 2 TT130s for the price of one saito125.I don't get the rust problems i get with the saito on the same fuel and environmental conditions. It is more powerful and lower in vibration. The saito black knight has a black finish that can come off if not handled carefully and the gold rockers lose the gilt after some time. Any engine with an anodized or baked black finish will have this problem. I don't have any brand allegiance but this particular TT engine is good value and the engineering in general is good particularly the carb and piston. The OS110a is one step up in quality but not by much and certainly does not justify the price difference. I will not hesitate to recommend the engine to anyone. It just needs a longer time to run in .

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
Found time to strip the engine down.Thank goodness its clean, no scoring.I am impressed with the rust resistant properties of the bearings and crankshaft unlike the saito which was a rust bucket.Clean as a whistle especially in our humid climate.I particularly like the lightening work done to the piston no doubt having an impact on the low vibration experienced. The strange thing is the camshaft. It is bearinged on the removable housing side but plain bushed at the other end! Reckon they think since servicing that bearing is difficult, they decided to forgo it I suppose.Saitos are bushed on both ends anyway. Overall, i still give this engine the thumbs up.It is well built with good materials used.

RE: NEED HELP!!!! TURNIGY 50CC GAS
This engine has another major weak spot, the rotary valve. A defective one will keep the rpms down. If the igniton system doesn't bring results, then thats the next avenue to look at.BTW, the sensor should be approx. be in the centre of the range of travel available.

RE: Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
I take it back.I removed the engine from the plane to do a thorough check of its condition after the backfiring and plug eating antics. I noticed some scoring of the plug threads and some fluff.I reckon its because the threads were not deep enough and as a result of the glow plug "making" new threads further in, it caused some of the gunk to be embedded in the threads as the plug was screwed out. Custom PC was right, the threads are not deep enough, its just that because of a combination of ham fistedness and threads that thankfully did not give way, i did not notice anything amiss. Thing is that you might get a leak if a compressed or thinner washer is used which actually alerted me to the problem as I could hear whistling noises as i turned the prop over. A fix is needed or you might get a stripped thread eventually or inconsistent runs.
