RE: Considering giving nitro flight a try.....any advice?
Koolkrabber47: The receiver I got today is a Spektrum AR500 Full Range Sport Receiver. I think it will work.

RE: Considering giving nitro flight a try.....any advice?
Ok guys, I have decided to get the Avistar package that I showed you all above. I am going to give this a good wholesome try. I pick the plane and gear up on Saturday.[:D] Now today I picked up a AR500 Spektrum RX for the plane even though it comes with a nice FM radio system. My buddy at the hobbyshop told me that the AR500 and my DX6i will be fine for this plane. I have found a couple of great people including Ciscovet who live near me that will help me get this baby going. Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions and I will continue to keep you all updated with my progress with my new hobby. Does anyone recommend a cheap but decent 10% nitro fuel for my plane? The seller told me that he put about 2 gallons of fuel through the engine since new. How many gallons are the stock engines good for?

RE: Considering giving nitro flight a try.....any advice?
Ok so I have a dilemma, my friend who is been into electric flight for years has told me not to get the nitro plane because it is too much of a pain in the butt, that i am going to crash it first time out, and I will hate it after awhile. I really want to try this stuff out. I have electric park flyers and stuff and since i enjoy the sound of my nitro trucks and cars I think it would be neat to try out. Another thing is that I think i have a GREAT deal here. Check it out...... Up for sale is a complete ready to fly Hobbico Avistar with Master Caddy Field Box and tons of accessories. I flew the plane about 50 times in total and it is in good condition with only a few scuffs. All batteries have been charged and cycled and appear to be in good shape. Asking $250obo for everything and thats a great price for what you are getting. Email me with any questions or your phone number if interested. Please no low ballers or check scammers or anything of that nature. I will only take cash from a face to face meeting. Below is a complete list of all that is included. 1 Hobbico Avistar RTF- Comes ready to fly with a .40 OS Max engine and Futaba Skyport 4 channel radio and servos on channel 50. I have the original box with all the paperwork and accessories. 1 Master Caddy Field Box with Auxiliary Power Station- Stores your accessories and parts and holds plane in place. 1 Hobbico Deluxe Power Panel with battery- For powering accessories and charging batteries. Installed into Master Caddy auxiliary power station. 1 Never Used Hanger 9 Double Vision Fast Field Charger- For charging transmitter, receiver and glow plug batteries through Deluxe Power Panel. 1 Hobbico Voltmeter- For checking charge level on transmitter and receiver batteries. 1 Hanger 9 Digital Mini Tach- Used for tuning engine 1 Hobbico Torqmaster 90 Starter with Hanger 9 Portable Battery- For starting plane. Portable battery installed on bottom of starter. 1 AccuThrow Control Surface Deflection Meter- For adjusting control throws/limits. 1 Doskocil Hard Case- Stores transmitter, tach and voltmeter safely. 2 Fuel Pumps- One is a Hobbico manual hand pump and the second is a Hobbico electric fuel pump for use with power panel. 3 Spare Props 1 Hand Starter 1 Du-Bro Glow Starter With Charger 1 Slow Cure Epoxy Kit 1 New Fuel Can Cap Fitting- To be installed into fuel bottle cap for extracting fuel with no mess. 3 Nylon Fuel Filters- For plane fuel tank. 5 Futaba Radio Plug Safety Retainer Clips- For securing radio connection from seperating. A bunch of misc parts also included. He is selling it to me for $200 and I am supposed to pick it up Saturday. Please guys tell me what I should do. I mean this package has EVERYTHING I would need to get started except fuel. SHOULD I DO IT??? Here are some pics of the stuff he is selling me. RE: Considering giving nitro flight a try.....any advice?
Thanks alot John and Ken. I forgot to mention that I have the Real Flight 4.5 system too. However my computers are all broken[:(][:'(][:@][:o][&o] so I will have to wait till I get them fixed to start training myself for the nitro world. I will however be still looking for the right nitro plane to train on that will have to be used because I am so strapped for cash, but the Tower 40 that my LHS has will still be at the the front of my mind. Hopefull it won't go anywhere soon. If it does then that plane was not ment to be mine. I will say that I have a DX6i and can use the RX's that are in my foamies to fly the new nitro plane. I also just picked up a brand new Bantam BC6 charger which I am in love with.[;)] so all I need is the field equipment for the plane and I think Parkzone has a starter kit with pump, chicken stix, and other stuff for about $40. RE: Considering giving nitro flight a try.....any advice?
ORIGINAL: ciscovet How well do you fly your blade. I was in your same shoes not too long ago. Also got into nitro and really had no idea about the engine and accessories needed in dealing with it. I ended up getting an GP escapade and got someone at my club to show me how to tune and run the engine. I had no problems picking it up on the first try. If you can fly helis then flying planes should be no problem. Even if they are nitro powered
ciscovet: Actually, I completely suck at flying my blade!! LOL!! I had it airborne for about 30 seconds before it rolled to the right and plowed into the ground while I was teaching myself how to hover 2 ft off the ground. Its still waiting to be repaired after 3 months. I have all the parts but no time to get it done in one shot. So I can confidentally say that I am a MUCH better fixed wing pilot than a rotary pilot. WHOA! RCKen, how'd you find that great piece of info?? Thanks so much for finding that. I will be getting in touch with these people about joining. To the 14 year old who thinks I should have no problem paying for the field dues and AMA membership at $58, I am married with 2 kids so I have these pain in the butt thieves called BILLS!! They take your money and most of it. Ask your parents who you live with about the people named BILL. John Buckner: My age is 35 so I would not qualify for the above AMA rates however I thought I saw somewhere that AMA was signing people up for $19.95 somewhere. To everyone else, thanks again for your continuing support and tips. Please keep them coming. My money is quite tight but I am going to try very hard to squeeze out the money for the AMA and a Field fee. Is the $58 for the AMA for the year or for the month? I am not going to give up on this. I might even sell my Blade 400 to get this nitro thing going. Please keep the ideas and tips coming and i will keep you updated.

RE: Blade 400
Hey you guys! I have good news and bad news. I have decided for the time being to continue my quest in mastering the RC Helicopter. The bad news is that my baby is still down for maintenance. I found another servo that was damaged in the first crash. My buddy at the hobbyshop has some HS65MGs for me to swap out but he has them at his house and I have not got around to getting them from him yet. The good news is that I have started practicing flying on my RF G4.5 tonight. See, I had to get my main laptop fixed because of a harddrive crash and in the meantime I had to buy a small netbook to get me through and the the main laptop was just repaired a few days ago. I decided to put my RF G4.5 on it since it was a clean hard drive and the performance was very impressive. I still can only fly in the photofields but that is no biggy to me. Anyway, I am proud to announce that I hovered the default AXE 400 heli without crashing for over 7 mins combined in two separate flights!!!! Mind you that I was all over the place but stayed within what I might guess was a 15 ft area infront of me and was only 1-5 feet off the ground. My god is it a concentration test to hover these things!!!!! Also I was flying on ADVANCED difficulty setting!! I am pretty proud of myself and I hope I will get better as I fly in the sim. I also hope my training on the sim will cross over to the real heli. Robert

RE: Blade 400
Well guys my day sucked. I don't think this hobby is for me. Took my baby out to a park with my T28 Trojan and put them in the air finally after rough weather all week. Finally had a small hole in the storms. I performed 3 great flights with my T28 with no damage. I put the blade on the ground and set her up for her first offical training flight. For some reason when I turned off throttle hold she spooled up a tiny bit. I don't understand this because there are days or times where she won't spool up and then there are times when she won't spool till I add throttle. Any ideas? Anyway, I got her pointed into the wind with me behind her and spooled her to take off power and she started to drift left and climb alot. I set her back down after trying to tame her for about 20 seconds and figured something was wrong. I unplugged the battery and replugged it in and attempted another take off. She got up fast kinda jumped and she banked hard and struck the ground and killed her. Damage was bad in my eyes. Blades, flybar, mainshaft, the upper mainshaft bolt and aileron servo were destroyed. While trying to remove the mainshaft I noticed the bottom mainshaft bolt's nut was stripped in it's hex housing in that gear. Wrecked the gear trying to remove it. Probably $50 in repairs after only 30 seconds of flight. This maybe too expensive for me. I want to learn so bad but the money is very very tight. I don't know when she will be fixed. Sorry guys.

RE: Blade 400
Heyy all, Well, I think I got my baby ready for her 2nd flight. I went through all of Sokal11's videos and I THINK I did everything right. There is no way I got it perfect but I think I might be close. I did fire her up in my hand and checked everything and she seemed smooth and powerful(my gosh if I was any lighter she would have lifted me off the ground!!!) when in hover or 0 pitch. However when I put in more than 1/4 stick direction of the right stick she felt like she had some binding. It happens in L and R Alieron and F and R Elevator. The tail seems weird too. When I add full right rudder the motor starts to bog. What the heck is that? I am just learning to hover so should I look into these problems if they are even problems? Jon. here are some pics of the lady with new training gear. She actually floats about 1/4 inch off the floor with them on plus the gear is not centered under the main shaft but just forward of it. Tell me your thoughts. Robert

RE: Blade 400
Jon, I assembled my new training gear tonight. I assembled the two 24"x 3.2mm CF rods together with baby zippies and glued he 2" styrofoam balls on the ends with the CA compatable glue and activator that I use to repair my my other baby the T-28 Trojan. Infact I need to get her in the air again soon. Question, When I put the training gear on the heli should I put the TG assembly under or through the landing skids? Robert PS. Dave, if those kids give you any trouble then just chase them down the street with the 400.

RE: Blade 400
Jon, Things have been wild around here lately so I have not had time to fly or even tinker with my lady. Besides weather has not cooperated to well either. In fact there is a storm over my house now. Let me get this straight. In order to set 0 degree pitch I need to have the heli in IDLE UP? I thought that mode was for experts only. I can understand where idle up would be easier for a beginner to learn because they won't have to worry about rotor speed just worry about blade pitch, is that right?

RE: MCX Question
Hi Alpha, I have an mCX as well and my "toilet bowl effect" was solved with replacing the inner shaft and balancing new blades. To balance my blades I screw them together as if they are on the heli and take 2 dixie cups or glasses and put them together and set the blade assembly on the edges of the glasses or cup by the ball links and adjust everything till the blades pivot very freely. Then once everything is set and they pivot nicely the heavier blade will drop and tell you that you need to add weight to the opposite blade. I use very small pieces of scotch tape on the underside of the blades to balance them. Just add or remove tape untill the blade assembly is somewhat balenced on the cups or glasses. That will eliminate alot of your problems. As far as the left yaw when the battery starts dying, you can counteract that with right trim and just keep adding trim till the heli stops yawing to the left. If you have all the trim set and the heli still yaws to the left then the battery is tired and you need to stop flying and put in a new charged battery. Enjoy!!

RE: Blade 400
Thanks Jon, I am going to cut the rods down to 24" this weekend. I just think they ARE way to bulky and heavy. It will have to do untill I can find those Carbon Fiber rods. I went to the LHS near my work in Tampa and my buddy only had one actual "rod" and it was only 8mm thick. I think I need thicker. What do you suggest for thickness? I might to to the LHS near my house and see if they carry the rods I need this weekend. Those servos sound like a darn good buy so I will look into those as mine burn out or get wrecked in my training. That gyro might be an instant buy though. For now the lady will just sit in her corner untill I make absolutely sure she is ready to take me on. [&o] Sad isn't it. Sometimes I just wish I was rich and can go through blades like water as I crash them learning to fly instead of worrying about breaking something and not having the money to fix them for a while "moan"[sm=rolleyes.gif] Of course don't we all? Dave buddy, with the way you write your posts you need to write a small book on your quest to master the RC helicopter!![:)] Just remember all of us rookies are right next to ya on the field learning how to dump our very hard earned bacon right into these flying holes in the sky!![:D][:)][8D]

RE: Blade 400
Hi Jon, I left you some posts on the last page which I believe were post numbers 97 and 100 about my training gear. Also, if you remember one of my first flights I ended up drifting under my car and killing some blades, I believe it was caused by me not setting the heli up properly. Number one I never checked for 0 degree pitch at 50% throttle and number two was because on that day I plugged my battery in and initialized the gyro while on te hood of my car and I probably did not give the gyro ample time to level itself. I do need clarification on adjusting for 0 degree pitch at 50% throttle using the eflite pitch gauge. Could you or someone else walk me through the process of this please. I will tell you that I believe I have mastered the fine art of adjusting my blade tracking!!!!! YEAH!!!![:D] Rob

Need help setting blade pitch with gauge.
Hey all. I have been trying to use my new eflite pitch gauge and setting my blades to 0 degree pitch at 50% throttle and this is the first time I have tried it and I used the video by Souko on you tube on how to use the pitch gauge and now I know that I have to adjust my blades. One of my blades is showing +5.5 degree pitch at 50%. I have not checked my other blades yet but I need to know how to fix it so it reads 0 degrees at 50% throttle. Please help. Robert
ORIGINAL: jon6565 Rob ~ Adding some Expo will definately soften the response BUT... it will also slow down response time if you get into difficulty. In the main however if you are just hovering you ''should be OK. Your trainer gear sounds quite heavy... are you saying you have 2 x 36'' rods or you cut the 36'' in half? have a quick look at this short video of my Blade from a couple of weeks ago. I now only use these for set up or test (such as fitting my Gyro this week) but otherwise they are off now. It is a 1m length of 3mm Carbon rod cut in half with styrofoam balls stuck on the end. The rod is from the Hobby Shop (cheap) and the balls from a craft shop (8 in a bag). MUCH lighter than the dowell. the trainer gear will affect the flying performance to... Have a squizz at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paBzvfSZxXw Also... tie a longer zip tie around the centre where they cross and through the body of the heli to pull the middle up. This creates a sping effect. Mount them 'under' the skids, and TIE THEM TO THE WHITE SUPPORT LEGS TOO not just the skids as they will slide off. The day you decide to take them off is a real heart-stopper but it's good to cut the apron strings! There's another video on my YouTube page without and you can see how quickly you lift off and avoid the drift left... Let us know how you go. Jon
Jon, I am using two 36" uncut wooden dowels that are 1/4 inch thick with plastic golf ball wiffles criscrossed under my landing skids. They really do look kinda big but I figured with my excellent skill on flying my mCX I would need something pretty meaty to save the heli from my great flight bloopers. [:)] I will definiately look into those CF rods and foam balls though. Would they be stronger or about the same as what I have now. Also how do you like those new hextronik MG servos? Are they pretty decent? Got to go cut the lawn[:'(][:@][&:][8|][:(] and hurry and get some flight time in. Storms with hail and wind coming soon. [X(] Here is a pic of my setup. RE: Blade 400
Hi everyone, I myself have been too busy to fly. My lady is sitting in the corner of my bedroom still waiting for me to inspect her feathering shaft and replace her blades from my first crash. I think tomorrow will be an intense training day. The weather has been really crappy lately around here. Rain chances at 80% everyday and just been irritating rain showers. I do have a question. I am using those 36"X1/4" dowel rods and wiffle golf balls for my training gear. I never cut the rods so they are still 36". Would you advise me to cut them down or leave them as is? Also, when I put her in the air for the first time I noticed how sensitive and touchy the controls were on my DX6i. One hair in any direction and she just flys away. Now my buddy at the LHS told me to adjust the EXPOs in the TX to 15% to start to make the heli just a little less squirrely. Will that work and will it help me with the learning curve? Rob

RE: Blade 400
Well tomorrow I will disassemble my feathering shaft and inspect it for damage and piece my baby back together and try some more. Weather permitting of course. I am so intrigued with these helis. I absolutely refuse to quit learning regardless of the crashes and money I am tossing in this baby. Today my buddy flew a Trex 450 and it was all blinged out. When it was hovering motionless it looked almost robotic. It was so cool. I'm definately hooked. 
