Flying fields in Brandon, FL??
Hello everyone!!! It's been a while, a very LONG while since I've ventured into this forum, but I'm back. Have dealt with A LOT within this past year. Been following up with my health issues. For those of you that may not remember, I was diagnosed with cancer about 2 years ago. So far so good and all tests have come up clean, Amen to that. I also relocated from Port Chester, NY to Brandon, FL! I absolutely love it down here and for the past month since my move, I've been kicking myself in the butt for not doing this sooner. As you might have guessed by now, I no longer moderate, which was expected given my absence and once again, I'd like to thank the head honchos at RCU for the opportunity they gave me some time ago, it was frustrating AND FUN while it lasted. Anyways, I'm looking to get BACK into this hobby full swing and as soon as possible [:D]. Might anyone know where there's a club nearby? I'm on E Bloomingdale Ave in Brandon on the Brandon/Valrico border. It sure is good to be back on here. During my absence, I kinda picked up another hobby...acoustic & classical guitar. As much as I love making music, I can't drop the r/c thing just yet, actually, not ever! LOL Best Regards, Richie

RE: Ducted fan question
If you use the 2 saddle tank system, make sure all fuel lines are of "equal" length for both tanks, or you'll find one tank's fuel exhausting before the other (the tank with a shorter line will go first). Feed them both to a small hopper tank to ensure steady fuel flow with an adequate pressure system as indicated above. Best Regards, Richie

Any hobby shop carries it, maybe even your local hardware store as well. I recommend using the blue stuff, the red is permanent, or so they say.

RE: Art Tech Falcon 3D
Ok...at least now I know for certain what the problem is. Replace the gear assembly. HOWEVER....we must consider what caused this to happen and I can only fathom..major vibrations. When you attach the gear assembly to the tail boom, play with different positions until you get the right mesh with the gears. If you spin the tail blades with your fingers, make sure there's no binding, you can usually hear and even feel this. Move the gear assembly back and forth on the boom until the rotation is smooth. I found this to be a problem the first time I replaced mine. Hope all this has helped...good luck and keep us posted. Regards, Richie

RE: Art Tech Falcon 3D
Ok...it definitely sounds like the bond between that gear and it's shaft is no more. However, what Ralph pointed out is also possible. When you turn that gear, does the spindle that it's on turn along with it? If they are both turning, then it's the set screws on the tail rotor hub that are loose. If the gear turns and the spindle that it's on doesn't, then you need to replace the tail gear assembly. And by all means, locktite everything!! Richie

RE: Art Tech Falcon 3D
Disregard...I just re-read your post and I see what the problem is now. You're saying that the gear that is actually attched to the spindle for the tail blades is malfunctioning. The gear itself spins freely on the spindle. Did I finally get it right? If so, yea, you need a new tail gear assembly.

RE: Art Tech Falcon 3D
Let me understand this correctly...you're saying the gear at the tail end can spin freely on the shaft itself? In other words....if you hold the tail gear up front at the main gear and while holding it, you are able to spin the tail gear at the back end. Is this correct? If so, that's the problem.

RE: HELP with Falcon 3d
Darkmatrix is on the money....the most important thing is...wait till the gyro stops beeping and you're good to go....and make sure you don't move the heli during boot up process.

RE: Art Tech Falcon 3D
It appears that one of 2 things is happening here....either the mesh between the tail gears is not solid OR (and most likely), the tail gear that is attached to the carbon shaft in the tail boom is freely spinning on the carbon shaft itself. Hobby Lobby tech support told me that the gears at either end of the carbon shaft within the tailboom are "pushed" on to the shaft. I don't like that setup. Personally, I'd glue the gears on with thin CA. Problem with that is, it becomes permanent. Should you ever have to replace anything on the tail boom, you'll have to replace the whole thing. Tail boom, carbon shaft, gears, bearings, you get the idea. I'd suggest you remove the tail gear assembly and try to spin the gears attached to the tail boom, I'll bet that one or even both of them, spin freely in opposite directions. If so, under load from the motor, this setup is slipping and is not transmitting power to the tail rotor, you'll have to glue them on. That is my guess because everything else on the pics you included looks normal. Keep me posted. Regards, Richie PS...If you get a chance, let me see 2 pics from above so I can see the "mesh" between the tail gears at both the main gear and tail rotor locations.

RE: OS 61 Hanno Special question
Thanks for the input Bill, very informative, and to think that I was starting to get my hopes up...[:o] I have no doubt the FX is a great engine. I just hate that the needle has been relocated to the rear of the engine. That won't fly with the setup on my Ultra Sport 60 without serious modifications to the fuse and who has time for that?? LOL, I know I don't. Regards, Richie

RE: OS 61 Hanno Special question
Chuck, If you're going to rebuild it, I'd strongly suggest ceramic based bearings from www.bocabearings.com. They'll cost a little extra, but they'll be well worth the investment IMHO. Richie

RE: OS 61 Hanno Special question
I'm glad to see that this threat was revived. I'd suggest we all go to www.osengines.com and click on the contact us link on the bottom of the home page and follow instructions for making a new product suggestion to show them there are many of us still interested in this motor. I'd pick up 5 of them in a heart beat. Regards, Richie

RE: Whats up with Greyhound?
The dimensions exceeded the limitations for FedEx, next time, try FedEx Freight. They handle the oversized stuff that Express can't put thru their system. As far as cost difference, I really don't know for I've never had to use Freight service, but it's worth looking into IMHO. Richie

RE: Model Airplane Terror...
Gentlemen....I'm starting to get the feeling that this thread is getting a little too politically involved. I can understand everyone's concern with regards to the regulation of our hobby as a result of naive news reports such as this one, but let's not get too carried away with our comments. Please, let's not forget.... "We do not permit political, social, religious, or other off-topic discussions. There are many places online to express your opinions on issues outside of RC so "RC" Universe is designed to be a place to talk just about RC." I'll have to do a little clean up job on this thread and many such comments will have to be deleted, nothing personal. Let's do the right thing so this one can stay open. Regards, Richie

RE: F9F-2B Panther Photos from Cavanaugh Flight Museum
Well, I have Hi-Res close ups of a Cougar that I took for a friend in Spain. Personally, it's a lot like a Panther except for swept back surfaces, unlike the Panther's straight wing. I did a walk around of this bird and got about 50 to 60 pics from all angles. Richie

RE: Turbines Banned at SRQ in FL
I hear what you're saying Marty, and for all intents and purposes, it's possible that this "moderator" thought that he WAS aware of all the facts, but be it true or not, he, just like any other member, moderator or not, is still an individual with his/her own idea of what actually happened. We, as moderators, do our jobs on a voluntary basis and we are all individuals with our own insights about what we experience within the hobby and what we see on RCU. That is not necessarily a reflection of RCU's point of view on things. I mean, let's be frank here, as moderators, we don't always make the right decisions and even WE are moderated. We are only human afterall. It's just my opinion that what was said regarding this incident was the opinion of one person and not necessarily of an entity like RCU just because he happens to moderate for them. Common sense alone should tell you this. In any event, I'm not looking for a back and forth contest here, you take my comments for what it's worth, we are all entitled to an opinion. BRG... Richie

RE: Turbines Banned at SRQ in FL
Jetguy....1st and foremost, I truly sympathize with what you guys are going thru and I for one, can appreciate one of the parties involved, namely yourself, coming on here and setting the record straight. I'm just now seeing this thread for the 1st time. Between work, kids and follow up doctor's appt's for the cancer I had, I don't get much time for anything else. I just wanted to point out my dissappointment with your choice of words on this matter. " I have been a member for over six years with hundreds of flights RCU is getting so bad about this" I'm actually glad for the experience you have and I have no doubt that it preceded you with the way you handled the aforementioned emergency. To say that RCU is getting so bad about this however, sets a very bad precedent for others to follow. RCU's "members" are the ones who post this information and it's up to people like us, like you, to make corrections on these posts when warranted, as you have done, but please, don't blame RCU for this error. In any event, I truly hope your people obtain turbine flying rights again very soon as this season is just getting started. Well, I guess that doesn't really apply in Florida, it's hot year round! I'm moving there next year and I can't wait!!! Happy safe flying and best regards, Richie
