are you wanting to build? i learned to fly on a duraplane, but then built a LT-25 from sig. it is an awesome flyer!

RE: OS32sx DAVIS HEAD
what makes the 32sx awesome is the carb. as a glow engine, it wll turn an 11x4 prop at like 11.5K. its a really strong engine. however, the carb will likely not help you much as a diesel, as i'm sure you are aware of. i'm curious just how much the barrel ends up traveling between idle and full throttle Martin. I'm thinking since the barrel is so big that it may not travel much. it looks awesome though. what prop are expecting it to swing? i'd say 12x6-2 blade = 10k 10x5 - 3 blade - 9K by chance, did you read the review of the AT6 in the latest RC-Report? That joker takes a lot of servos...

RE: Prop Breakage
When I first started, I was running an older OS 25 max in my garage. I decided I would taxi around in my drive way. Well, I barely hit the prop on a tire, and as a newbie I didn’t realize that the prop needs to be checked when you have a prop strike. So I just started the engine back up, and I was practically standing right over it when I did it. Well, that was bad. It fired, took some revolutions, threw a blade and it hit me in the face, just on my eye. I had blinked just in time, and it must have been the long edge because after I got to a faucet and was pouring cold water over my face and there wasn’t any blood, I was so thankful. My vision came clear after a while, and my eyeball quit hurting after a while too. All was okay. I went back, and the prop had broken close to the hub, and I was lucky not to catch the jagged edge. NEVER STAND OVER A RUNNING ENGINE, OR ONE YOU ARE TRYING TO START! I’m super careful now, and stay in front of the engine. I wear some sort of eye protection always. Oh, and always bend the prop and check it carefully after any prop strike! My brother-in-law had a new ASP 52 4-stroke last week. All he had holding the prop on was a saftey spinner. That didn't work, even though he tried prolly 15 times. A lock nut goes a long way on a 4 stroke.

sorry it took so long to get back. i forgot about this post. he uses 15% with 22%oil. he did a careful breakin with a 9x6. I got one myself and I'm doing the break-in now. He was turning a 10x4 zinger. I think that this engine is a good one.

RE: Discontinued Sig Kits
[quote]ORIGINAL: Jeff Foley Unfortunately.....I doubt you will see any kits brought back, or any new ones for that matter. The kit business as we have known it for all these years will slowly start to die out. The guys that have the ability and desire to build them are aging....and it seems like most people would rather fly than build. Thus, we have the ARF market. [/quote] on googling for discontinued SIG kits, i found this thread. Jeff's statement caught me. i guess we all sort of figure kits will die. but it seems they are holding their own. some new kits have been released is why i reason that way: [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXVY37&P=7]rascal[/link] [link=http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMUM2&P=SM]this electric is especially notable in my opinion[/link] [link=http://www.hobbyhorse.com/sig_kavalier.shtml]kavalier is still around[/link] we just need to keep buying kits and avoid arfs when we can convince ourselves it isn't worth it! :D believe me, i know, that takes some convincing when you look at costs sometimes.. i wrote an email to the guy who designed the Rascal 110 asking him to release a kit. his reply was that it would cost more to build it yourself. i told him i didn't care, i wanted to build. he said he couldn't help me. i guess i need to write somebody else in the company and request that. there must be some sorta economic incentive for them not to release kits of planes they ARF...i just don't know what it is. perhaps they can't mark a kit up as much as an ARF. i can't imagine how much money they make on just one ARF.

dope may be hard to come by. if you are going electric, you can use nitrate dope. glow would need butrate dope. there are some people that have used Aeroglass dope and its supposedly fuel proof nitrate dope because of some addative. at least i think i have that right. lots of people now-a-days are applying tissue with a glue stick. is this what you plan to do? also, some people are just skipping out on dope and using various types of spray paint.

RE: Diesels are dead - apparently!
[quote]ORIGINAL: lildiesel Apparently so, from observing some big diesels running with 20% and less ether. I've never had any real success with that little ether in my smaller engines, and mostly that was as a kid before I figured out about the % of ether to propellant and lubricants in a can of starting fluid. BTW, bumping that PAW .06 with an electric starter repeatedly with a no ether mix should be considered a Crime Against Modeling. That video was painful to watch. [quote]ORIGINAL: colingw Is it true that bigger diesels in general can cope better with low ether fuels? Seems to fit my limited experience, but I havent (yet) had a diesel bigger than the PAW 19. RE: Magnum 40 conversion New break in
thanks for the info Lou. Very interesting. The engine is broken in by now, I'm sure. I did do a glow break in of about 2 tanks worth. Which is what you concluded could very well be all thats needed. I think the full throttle vs 3/4 throttle fuel consumption is spot on. I'll take notice of it in the next run. I still don't feel comfortable mounting this engine. I'm still getting the feel for what to do, how much to prime and such. I usually moved the compression screw all around until I get a hit. I didn't flood it last evening, but I kept thinking I had. It took more fuel that I had figured to get it started. I'm going to add some kero as Martin suggested, and hopefully it will help. There is a LOT of muffler pressure for the fuel. I noticed, that all I had to do was prime with the fuel bottle with the fuel line empty, and as soon as the engine got started, it really pushed that fuel through. I got the "peak" sound going by tightening the compression, and noticed that at a very specific point, the compression screw went from touchable to HOT in a hurry. Very interesting. I guess that is the OVER compression point?? I was amazed by that. I could back it off by about a 1/4 turn and it was touchable and mild. Subtle needle settings don't affect much on this dieselized Mag.

what happened to Martin's comments??? Will you repost your comments on the fuel mixture martin? Something glitched. I got to read them this morning...but now they are gone!? Wierd. I would only want it for the Mag 52 RFS possibly...unless you wanna trade for that 25D! HA! :D

RE: Magnum 40 conversion New break in
So I put an APC 13x4W on the RJL-CONVmag40. Running some homebrew - 40% ether, 35% kero, 20% castor, 5% booster. I can crank it pretty well, but its strange that it likes to be pretty well primed. maybe its strange. i don't really know. seems it since everyone says diesels run on less fuel. ANYHOW>>>the point ... i was running this APC 13x4W and its certainly easier to start, and it sounds pretty good too. I was tachin' it at like 6700K. I guess thats too big of a prop?? Davis Diesel Development says his head on a MAG40/TT40/OS40FP will swing a 13x4. Is the 7K range about right for this conversion? By the way, I don't like the 13x4W so far. Its seems its so wide, it really kills RPM. It killed the RPM & thrust on the MAG 52 xls four stroke AND it dropped the thrust by 8 ounces on a spring scale, compared to the Master Airscrew K SERIES 12x5. I'm getting a MAS K series 13x4 to compare apples to apples. also, i attatched a picture of the engine, and how much oil was spit out. Always amazes me how much is blown out.

thats a good way. i just spray it into a glass bottle with a lid that is large enough to fit the top into and still small enough to cover with my fingers and disperse the liquid into the bottle without much escaping into vapor. you loose some, hopefully not much. its good to have the spray can as level as possible without spilling.

RE: Diesels are dead - apparently!
WOAH! DON'T GO ELECTRIC!!! [:D] i'm not anywhere close to you, but have you considered mixing your own fuel? kerosene (or lamp oil) is very likely to be available. castor. and then the doozy...some ether. Ether is the tough one cause you can't find it in a pure form due to stupid drugs. However, I use something found in a tractor store called John Deere Ether Starting Fluid. Its 80% pure. Works good, with a touch of diesel supplement (cetane booster). So, the £45 per gallon is quite a hefty price, maybe you can shave a pence (is that right??) by mixing your own? it might be worth the investigating...
