RE: O.S. Engines now made in China
Almost every OS engine made has been copied by someone in china Quality control and metallurgy are there short comings They LOOK the same but are not the same !

Due to very limited human depth perception after 50 feet ,you could not hit another plane if you choose to and planned it Mid airs are just accidents , with two planes trying to be in the same place The cost of the planes just makes it a harder hit emotionally and financially So sorry for both the planes and pilots for there loss

RE: Engine mount
Do consider the Evolution 46 or 52 two cycles The 46 is more powerful than my OS and supertiger 46 engines ( more like 50-55 power ) These engines just never caught on , but have brute power for there size , are true chrome cylinders and built for the long hall I bought one at a swap for 25 dollars and was amazed at the power , owning many OS engines of all sizes and series Building and flying more than most for 24 years , so i was surprised The engines are around alot in the 50 dollar range and originally came on a HORIZON trainner as best I can recall Is truly a great 46 if it was 150 dollars , and one of the hobbys well kept secrets , as they have never become popular for some unknown reason

RE: Engine mount
Go with an APC 11/6 after you break it in That size prop offers the most torque ( for vertical ) and helps with throttle control on your final ( prop drag slows the aircraft ) RULE larger prop with less pitch , that keeps you in the top end recommended RPM range of the manufacturer

Any two cycle glo engine you could run 15 percent MORGAN OMEGA on do it I have been using it in all my engines for 20 years with no internal wear to speak of My engines range from 46 to 1.80-all two cycle glo I used Cool power the first two years I flew that resulted in a great deal of metal and engine wear during that time I was experienced handling glo engines for 5 years flying control line before I started flying RC-so engine handling was not the wear issue Running the crankcase dry at the end of a flying day is a must for engine and bearing life I have learned to use after run oil when I am putting the plane aside for a while and going to another I found that using it daily if you are flying the plane in the next day is not the best idea The engine firers up and runs much cleaner and better on the first start up of the day when returning to the field with the same plane in a short time

Pull the glo plug and lube the engine with the glo fuel you will run the engine onturning the prop gently and a back and forth motion until engine loosensdo the same with the carb-use no major force Old oils will liquidate with the new fuel Let it sit over nightI like to put the planes nose down on to the table so the front bearing gets oiled Run the engine The os1.08 is a ringed engine I run a 15/8 apc on mine Morgan omega 15 percentpink One of OS's very best glo engineseverthey just got this engines performance characteristics right One of those engines that is just better than it should be regarding smooth reliable performance

CA glue on the treads will seal the threads and prevent an air leak around the threads that wb a bad thing especially for a glo engine-C A is gas and glo fuel proof epoxy is gas proof I have simply JB welded a few of my carbs in to the crankcase with great results-carbs stay good for yearsheat with a butane torch to remove the carbseldom required

ONLY for glo engine use plane gets a wipe down after every flight (two cycle glo engines and film covering ) and a clean up before leaving the field to keep fuel residue out of all seams You can use clear dope under a film in areas prone to collect hot fuelEX the aileron and elevator seams on the muffler side the alcohol in windex will cause your seams to liftsealing seams on ultracoat and decals with clear SIG dope prevents them from liftingyou will not see the dope Armorol spray will protect the ultracoat and shine it up real nicespray on wipe off twice

Hi I was always taught to turn on the RX first then the TX YOu can tell if someone is on your frequency by doing it this way I fly only 72 mh Flight done RX off first then TX You might be experiencing the residual battery charge being a bit higher than the true batterys rating -that gets used up rather quickly when the battery is on for moments after being turned on Not a problem if servos only do move that way at first then resume normal use

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
Hi SIG is a great RC kit company that has been around for as long as I can remember Sig supplies the hobby with a good deal of the balsa wood ,the quality of there kit wood is very high for that reason I have an original SIG 40 size SWEET STIK with a 51 ST engine it is the plane i have flown the most in 22 years of flying RC and i have over 20 planes ready to fly ,have about 500 or so flights on it I have freshened up the plane 4 times in 22 years ,it is one of my keepers Always a relaxing fun day at the flying field ,easy breezy flying day , RELAXED I built anheadral into the wing-being a top wing plane it flys better than ever ,much less control coupling than before It does look a bit odd ,but it flys much better The fuse will no longer accept a film covering-so i coated it in SIGMENT GLUE to fuel proof it ,as nothing would stick to the surface after 3-4 film coatings had been applied in the past Just brushed on the SIG glue and it smooths out very well ,kind of like the wood look and no film to come up on the seams KEEP SIG ALIVE Regards Tony

RE: 72 mhz still ok?
Hi Been flying on 72 mgh since 1989,40 to 1/4 scale two cycle glo planes ( with NICAD batteries just like i did then ) I started out with the Futaba Conqest Series of radios, non computer there were no computer radios then ,all triming adjustments were done mechanically ( more difficult to do ) pushing TX buttons did not exist but the radios were bullit proof equipment then and cheep these days Had the first computer radio by Futaba the 5UHF -got it at a flee market cheep, flew it for about 15 plus years or so-,expodencial is a great feature-that radio was real good to me for a lOOOOOOONG time Now have the Futaba 7 CAP a great 72 radio that can do all I need to FUTABA has been my radio of choice as it was my trainners for 30 years before I met him My radio equipment has never had to go back for repair I have only had one glitch that i found the cause of in 22 years of flying RC I have had such trouble free service for so many years I JUST SEE NO NEED TO CHANGE ANYTHING regarding radio equipment IF IT AIN'T BROKE-DON"T FIX IT ! ! ! applys big time right hear The 2.4 stuff has had its brown out issues most of which I believe are related to battery power and draw related issues I have my doughts about NIMH battery power in any RC equipment due to there greater voltage drops i just read that it is a good practice to disconnect your batteries from there switches at the end of a days flying ,as the newer 2.4 TX's ECU's and gas ignition pack are drawing 2-4 mah of power while they are turned off (no issue for me ) 72 has been trouble free for me for so many yearsI will use it until it is no longer legal to do so The frequency boards are as free of activity as could be since 2.4 is being used more and more So now less chance for someone to turn on there radio and take you out of the sky-which is 72's only short comming I can think of COMMUNICATION with those on the same channel solves that issue-,just ask everyone if they are on your channel at your field Having a good computer radio you can trust is just a must in this hobby-I do have mine Regards Tony

RE: Master K vs APC
Hi VERTICAL performance is your guage for performance, unlimited vertical being the GOAL Prop your airframe to do the best vertical performance you can and you are there ! That same power will pull you through all the other manuvers Your goal is to prop the AIRFRAMES for there best performance I did all the testing for performance with wood-,MAS and APC-,15 years ago myself ( APC came out just about then ) YOU will get the best possible engine performance on most glo engines with nylon props-,especially the smaller glo engines, wood is last best Prop strikes on nylon can be hard on your crank pin if flying off pavement ( so don't do that !) APC was always the strongest vertical performance on a given airframe hands down in my tests I found that MA noted pitch is always less of a pitch than that of the APC,MAS will turn more RPMS for that reason ( pitch guages are available ) The MA prop do flex and that actually makes them reduce in overall size some-,lets say 1/8 to 1/4 inch smaller at full bore-the prop tips move noticable foward ( so now you have a smaller prop with less pitch when using MAS ,sometimes that will put your in the engines sweet spot in its RPM power range, All good and they are less expensive than APC) I sport fly and have found using the largest prop with the lowest pitch and staying in the engine manufacturers RPM power range while doing that allows me the most vertical performance and the most control ESPECIALLY on the base and final landing approachs I only fly APC prop on all my planes these days , top performance is what i seek All my planes do unlimited vertical or very very close to it Thats my two cents -,give it a try Building and flying two cycle glo for 26 yearsmore than most-,less than a few, with a very high degree of success in all aspects of this great hobby Do keep your FOCUS when the prop is spinningthese nylon props are meet cutting machines-and will cut you bad If your mind wanders or you are distracted by a dam engine that won't start ETC>- can be DANGEROUS ! ! ! RE: Would you rebuild it or lay it to rest
Hi I have been flying RC 22 yearsmore than most A very unusual thing about this hobby is that you usually get some kind of a WARNING that a problem is going on ,a short time before-sometimes moments before the problem causes more of a problem or takes out your model With enough experience you will lean to identify the problem very QUICKLY and take the necessary step to prevent the bigger problem from happening This develops from time and experience at the flying field A good example would be hearing your ailerons flutter and instantly closing down the throttle and landing In your case your warning was the battery taking a little bit of a charge With more experience you would identified it was time to stop and find the underlying cause of the problem with your battery pack Very sorry about you loss- a very nice plane What you are experiencing is part of the RC Learning curve The leaning curve can be a little less painful with less expensive airplanes as flying time is the key to getting you ducks in order in the hobby Making a good friend of an experienced expert pilot you can consult helps a lot You might have explained your battery issue with someone who's advice you trust at the meet you were at Asking the right question to the right person will help you a lot in the hobby Of coarse hein sight is always 2020 Regards Tony

RE: O.S. 55AX Engine Floods - PM Tucano
Hi All due respect Glo engines do NOT LIKE being run inverted as it complicates the starting and setting of the needle valve correctly and therefore can get aggravating and frustrating, not to mention going dead stik A Glo engine not tunned as well as it should be gets difficult to fly ,if power is marginal for any reason from less than correct power out put and tunning GLO engines run there best and equally well upright or on its side and it is necessary to keep the basics as simple as is possible to enjoy a good flight and day out Your plane will only fly as good as you engine runs ! PERIOD ! My opinion after having been there-done that is to remount the engine so you are not adding any variables that COMPLICATE what you are trying to accomplishhaving a good day at the field and good flight performance An inverted glo engine adds negative variables that there is no need to deal with ever This especially applies if you are new to flying and the hobby Part of the learning curve as i see it Building and Flying only glo two cycle for 26 years,So I KNOW ! If fitting the engine inside the cowl is your issue-to look pretty Do consider cutting the cowl so the engines head stiks out (engine up or to the side ) or fly with the cowl off It will be better to do that than damage the plane due to an engine not running right issue that in my opinion will happen some time if you keep the engine inverted It seems you will always lean twards taking the plane to the field that is the best running and simplest to fly and enjoy for the long hall-as you put the most flights on that plane I have rambled on here-,but hope it gives you a direction to enjoy flying your plane more easilyand makes it more fun and less of a task Regards Tony

RE: Modifying Stabilizer Incidence
Hi I have built most of my planes for 20 years with : a zero incidence stab-zero incidence wing and zero incidence engine alignment per the very wonderfull trainner i had the very good fortune to know and love who was flying for 30 years before i met him They perform great for me that waymy planes ALL fly on rails when trimming flights are completed Now the engine is pulling the wing and stab thru the air all on the same demensional planewith less resistance (all pulling in the same direction )OR do follow the instructions on incidence on the plans (especially for bi-planes ) My elevator when trimmed after a flight is always level ( or an incidence adjustment is required ) If you are carring up trim in your elevator after you trim the plane for the first flightsyour wing has DOWN incidence in it If you are carring down trim in your elevator after you trim the plane in flight your wing has UP incidence in it The amount of up or down trim you are carring is the EXACT amount you need to SHIM the wing Example- If you are carring 1/4 inch down elevator ( after you have trimmed the plane in flight ) that indicates your wing is at 1/4 inch positive incidenceyou need to SHIM the wings TE 1/4 inch for the wing to get back to zero incidence Example twocarring 1/4 inch up elevator indicates you wing is carring 1/4 inch down incidenceyou need to SHIM the front of the wing UP 1/4 inch for the wing to get back to zero incidence In both cases above after the proper SHIMING is done the stab - elevator and wing will all be flying level ( elevator will have no up or down trim any longer ) when plane is retrimmed on its next flight Having the elevator carry no up or down -but be NEUTRALwhen you trim is were you want to be As a rule all incidence settings wing and fuse squaring should be done in the shop prior to the first flight The first flight will tell you a lot about how close you are to perfection Or if an ajustment is required for flying surfaces to trim out as they should As a general rule I think it often takes 5-10 flights on a given new plane to work out the BUGS of a given new aircraft You need to trim out get the landing gear to work (sometimes )get engine to run as it shouldrecord the way a given plane flys and responds to controls and manuversnote CG location type servos and RX in plane prop size engine RPM ETC- With 20 plus planes flying i keep an index card for each plane with notes that explain any ODD STUFF i need to know about each plane and any maintenance that was performed or needs to be performed ( all spec's related to flying are recorded ) Not remembering what was done or needs to be done could be COSTLY Sometimes with a lot of planes it is YEARS before i get back to flying a given plane but no problem -all I need to know is on the index card in black and white (do write up the index card in PENCIL so changes can be easily made to your recorded info if this will work for you ) Notes for each plane keeps me knowing what each plane requires and what i can expect from its performance even if years of having the plane hang on the wall have passed when i decide i would like to fly it again After returning from a day at the field-i will sit and make detailed notes as to all the events of my days flying I find this to be the best possible way for me to determine all kinds of ways to improve a planes performance and realize what maintenance should be performed to improve the plane i am flying so i can move foward with the planes performance Any and all issues are noted so they can be adressed before the next day out HAPPY LANDINGS ! RE: Modifying Stabilizer Incidence
Hi Put the plane in a foam plane cradel Put a level on the sab and MAKE the stab read ZERO on the level - (dead center on the bubble)-shim it so it stays there Now put your incidence meter on the wing (radio on if you have the meter placed on the ailerons ) The reading you get on the meter will be your wing incidence ( always with regard to the stab that is ZERO ) In this case the meter sb reading 2.5 degrees positive if correct That means the wing sb 2.5 degrees higher at the leading edge than the trailing edge You need to adjust the wing seat as needed to have the wing at 2.5 degrees positive location if it is not there already Be sure to use your means of fastening you wing downthe incidence must be the same after all is tightened This is a very good time to check your wing to be sure it is centered on the fuse I use a piece of nylon fishing line with knots in it Example :place one end of the nylon line at the end of the aileron (closest to the wing tip ) and extend it to the joint between the stab an rubberdo the same thing to the other side of the wing When both lenghts of line are equal the wing is centered put a mark on the fuse so you can always have the wing square to the plane every time you install the wing on the plane Building and flying more than most for 26 years This sb the info you need to know and how to get there REGARDS TONY

Hi dabigboy So right about NICADS being better than NIMH batteries I started flying in 1989 NICADS handle vibration better than NIMH I would like to ad to the list of things they do better Flying nicads for 22 years The ONLY battery technology there was in 1989 and i never had it fail me Only had 2-3 NIMH packs but did identify there poorer quality early on my battery test equipment Charge NICADS slow and do not use peak or fast chargers on them to have them perform for a maximum long life Keep them fully charged to prevent them from developing shorts-I charge every two months if they are idleand cycle when taking a plane that has been idlebefore it goes to be flown I use an ACE DIGIPACE ( model one or two ) to cycle the batteries Always cycle batteries 2-3 times when a new packtake a MA readingwhen the bats are cycled in the future and fall 20 % below your first established reading the battery is done I do not go by the disgard the bat after 3 years ruleif it cycles above 20% of my established reading i fly it I have not lost a plane to battery issues to date using NICAD technology The enloope technology seems interesting as does the 123 type bats I will never buy a LIPO and put my family and valuables at risk for any hobby IF IT AINT BROKE-DON"T FIX IT ! ! !
