RE: Tremor Redcat ST Battery Connector
cool. JST means japanese solderless technology. Why they're crimped, some crimping tools can be found for $20 some $200 depending on the crimp type.

RE: Hobbyking battery quality question
The zippy's i have the voltage tends to wander off a bit, if left for a week. The older nano techs always stayed constant. I've heard the newer nano techs in larger capacity>3000 aren't as good as quality as the <3000 packs. I think if i had a junk charger my zippy's would of been ruined by now, but thats just my opinion.

RE: Parallel charging
8.5A is correct at 5C, I'd prefer 1C 90% of the time. Or if I was in a hurry I'd use a charge rate of 0.8 of the max C rating which is 6.8A

RE: Tremor Redcat ST Battery Connector
looks like the connector is only available from redcat itself. If you can't solder take it to a hobby shop if they're nice they'll do it free, but they would most probably charge you. Don't twist the wires and tape up.

RE: Abused LiPos
what are the battery specs? if it's all same cell count a high power single charger with para board is where it's at. If they are different cell counts the dual would do. But i still think quad chargers aren't up to the task with Lipo's getting higher capacity, it's best to have overkill than something that;s just ok for now. I'm with the power lab 8, just waiting for it to be in stock at lhs. There is also the fatboy 8 at hobbyking, made at same factory by the same people as the pl8, the only difference is the lack of quality firmware updates.

quad chargers are generally low powered, maybe about 50W per port. You may regret buying one.

the firmware updates the specs also. I think the last firmware update for the pl8 fixed the internal resistance calculations using the mpa board. the one before that increased the charge amps through the balance leads from 1 to 3A, the one before that added a new battery chemistry. I think they was the last three updates. Maybe revelectrix will give the fatboy its old out of date updates.

same as above, the money goes towards something else like a good charger. Never had a pack go bad.

if there rebranded by hobby king then it may well be same charger, but you won't get the Hitec firmware updates. I assume it will be similar to the fatboy 8 and PL8, both made in same factory both same specs but the PL8 gets the official updates and the fat boy gets nothing.

Charger power defines the charge amperage is what chargers can do, also the charger firmware. yes if the charger doesn't have the power the charge rates will drop as it doesn't have the power, this goes for all chargers. eg. budget 50W 5A charger 2s= 5.9A but limited too 5A by charger firmware. 4s= 2.9A 6s= 0.9A

RE: Expensive US made vs Chinese Batteries
you pay for warranty for some packs. Capacity might not be far out on whats stated on packs, but C ratings are even on more expensive packs. Some 30C are 20C and some 20C are 30C. this goes throughout the lipo manufacturers.

RE: thunder power tp820cd, or powerlab 8 decision
cheers dudes, I been swaying from one to the other and spent most of the day looking up. I knew the pl8 was very accurate, but didn't realise the thunder power had issues, which may be fixed now, but I wouldn't take a risk if i'm paying top dollar, I want accuracy. I'm moving up from an IQ605 which is quite a big jump, but this has served me well but too under powered for me now. I seen the fatboy 8, which is made by same company in same factory, but doesn't have the software that the pl8 has and taking shipping costs into consideration I think i will go for the PL8 from a nearby hobby shop. This is going to be my first purchase in a real shop for RC stuff.

RE: E maxx battery help
your right 5000 is 5000 whether from good quality nimh or lipo, the only difference is lipo might just have that couple more minutes, because of less weight. But the lipo pack drops it energy near the end of the run while a nimh drops pretty much straight away which gives the effect of loosing runtime because the battery seems empty. I can't remember if people ran 7cell on the old evx, But 2s LiPO would work as long as there is an alarm or lvc.

thunder power tp820cd, or powerlab 8 decision
Decisions decisions, Hello there I'm in the market to upgrade my charge set up. This is the two that was on my list from the begining and after a look through google and other chargers. I'm back left to these two and can't decide which way to go. my choice is left at Thunder Power TP820CD and the Cellpro PowerLab 8 V2. I'm looking at these so that it can be years before i change again and would still fetch a better price if I needed to upgrade later. If you had choices of only these two which one would get the vote. I know there is less expensive high spec chargers out there, but it's only for these two models that i'd choose. The power lab 6 maybe, but as last resort.

RE: Battery selection
Treated correctly I'd choose NiCAD, over NiMH. But buy whatever is available or easiest to buy whether NiMH or NiCAD. But having LiPO there is zero comparison. I think anyone who is using LiPO would never go back to using nickel batteries.

I've had a 2s in a bucket of salt water for about a week now i will have a look and check the voltage tommorow, but i discharged on charger first, cut off my connector, one wire at a time then dropped it in. The waters a bit brown but this is my first disposal so don't know what it's meant to look like.

RE: LiPo rookie
ORIGINAL: jackalope54 Thanks KW Counter for the advice and reassurance. I'm going to modify a balance lead extension so I can check individual cell voltages with a multimeter - my probes are too big to insert into a balance plug and I don't think I want to risk shorting across any of those pins. :) Jack
good idea, cut the other end off at different lengths so it won't short as easy by accident. Or pick up a battery voltage monitor for LiPO which i think is about $3 from ebay. Yes boards can be bought seperatly. I am unsure what the onyx uses for balance connector but the zippy is an jst-XH type.

RE: LiPo rookie
seems strange the lowest value is higher than the max ammount on the charger, but the pack voltage is about right. I'm thinking it's a charger problem. did you measure the individual cell voltage through balance plug.

RE: Battery selection
Why would a tekin esc have to use old style batteries. If it uses 5cell Ni** or less then yes, But 6cell Ni** = 8.4V 2s LiPO = 8.4V charged. Just because something is old doesn't mean you can't run newer technology, with LiPO you need some sort of LVD which is why manufacturers state not to use LiPO on esc's that doesn't have this feature, But you can buy these separately. You may need to power the Rx with a different supply but that shouldn't be a problem

RE: Battery selection
voltage is voltage whether it comes from the moon or NiCADS, LiPO, NiMH. Although you need to work out how much voltage you need so the right pack is bought. What you would need with LiPO is some sort of low voltage device like a LVA (alarm). And a LiPO charger, 90% of LiPO chargers can charge different chemistries which will always come in handy.
