RE: RC Surfer
YPC - When I'm talking about stalling, I mean driving off the bottom into the pocket, stalling (brake or reverse) hard to wash off almost all the speed, thenaccelerating and driving through the barrel. Just letting motor resistance slow the board down will not have the desired affect of a proper stall. The wave I surf on the ledge really needs this kind of action to be surfed properly. I want to try this angle because I want to surf the RC exactly the same way I approach my own surfing. stalyoni - yeah mate, limited to 80% TC other wise the prop cavitates, board slows and I can only imagine what damage those kind of vibes will do to the drive line.

RE: RC Surfer
ORIGINAL: stalyoni Tripper can we set brake with the hk300 to make the motor slow down slowly with a boat esc? I can do it with my car though.
If the ESC has reverse and brake function, yeah, no probs with the HK300.

RE: RC Surfer
ORIGINAL: stalyoni thanks so much tripper. Just ordered a hk 190-200 boat esc and a 3a ubec from the HK aussie wharehouse. Do you think my zippy 3s 4000mah lipos will fit in it? I have a few of them. Do you think the little 2848 3900kv would handle a 4s? Anyways I will have to wait to see when it gets here whats going on with it as im just going off what others have been saying. I will be using the hk300 tx and rx combo. Should be able to dial it right in with this tx.
The 4000's will fit with a little bit of cut and shut work if the Venom (I haven't seen one) is a direct copy of the NQD, take out the ribs under the lid. You will need to put some CF spars to stiffen the lid back up. 4S will be too much for the 3900, it's at its upper limits on 3S. I have the TC maxed out at 75-80% from memory, above that the prop cavitates. I have the same HK TX, it's all good, way more than ya need for a surfer. I do want to try and use reverse programming though, use it to stall for barrels and such. That's the hardest part of operating these little dudes, ya end up with too much speed for tubes sometimes, it would be great to be able to stall just like the real deal.

RE: RC Surfer
Maui John, I could bore you to death with theory on Amps, C ratings, discharge....blah, blah, blah, so I won't go there. Firstly there is the care of the lipo, stick to the 20% rule, although 30% is best for long lipo life, get a Quanam Telemetry system from HK, best $50 you will ever spend for lipo care. Don't over discharge, don't leave lipos discharged or fully charged for more than a week at a time and store charge them for the down time between sessions. Then store them in a fridge when not in use, it's amazing how just sitting in a warm spot can make the chemistry deteriate. Basically for this kind of high Amp draw, you want the highest C rating you can afford, 65C would be best. I hav'nt got any for my surfer yet, running 35C but I use 65C in my helis, kick ar$e over the lower C ratings I've used before. Anything under 45C will get hot and puffy before long, the 35C's I'm using come out hot and puffed every time, although they had a tough previous life as heli power. Then there is correct electrics choice, especially the ESC, better to go overkill than run on the limit of an ESC's specs. Good soldering of course and connector choice, EC5 is best for high amp draw. And a smooth, free running mech setup as Dom stated, any kind of friction will in turn cause high amps, high temps and hot, puffed lipos. In a heli for example, if the pinion and main gear have no backlash (generally speaking, some helis require no backlash), it can increase temps all round by 30-40%, reduce run time by 25% and Amps go through the roof. I guess the last thing is get a good charger, the cheap ones charge alright but they don't do the fine balancing needed for longevity. Anything from Hyperion, Thunder Power, Powerlab PL series are the best choices. Balance charge every time, some people will tell you it's not important for every charge but for long life, it's the best method. Stalyoni, the 27mm prop is stock but HK have the 27mm props in stock. The shaft would be 3.17mm from memory, and it has a dog but it's just a crap plastic female type fixed to the end of the drive shaft. The 120A speedie runs stone cold every time, 70A might be pushing the limit there.

RE: RC Surfer
I may just make a trip your way Dom, I'm working a 6/3 roster until at least the end of Feb 2013. I can see your skilsl have been improving with more water time. When watching RC Surfer vids, it's real easy to tell who is a surfer and whos not. It's all in the approach and the lines drawn on the wave face for setting up each move, and the next move down the line. Easy for those of us who know how, not so easy if you've never surfed before.

RE: RC Surfer
ORIGINAL: stalyoni Hey guys, Im from Australia and I just purchased the venom bondi surfer girl. I was wondering if this is the same or a direct copy of the NQD surfing lisa. I got it cheap at $100 posted. I have a SL2848 3900kv motor to put in it and ether a 55amp (no cooling) or a 70amp (water cooled) escs to put into it. I have ordered some parts from rcsurfrider.com. I got the motor coupler and single fin mod and some other things. Will this single fin mod work on the venom version? I will also do the JIMI reverse rocker tail mod as well. Looks like this is a must do for the NQD surfing lisa to stop it skipping like a stone on the water. I cant wait to get it now and ill put up some footage as soon as I can. Is there any other current threads on rc surfers out there? thanks Brendon.
Sorry I couldn't answer your questions on arcplane mate, I'm in Botswana at the moment, the internet is real hit and miss out here in the Kalahari, arcplane won't load at all. I see you sorted ya self out with a surfer. The LHS I got my NQD has sold out of em anyway. I'm running a 27mm prop with 3900 on 3S, goes pretty well as you would have seen in the vid.

K-H20, the info I get will be accurate I'm sure, it'll come straight from the owner of Scorpion motors. He supplies the motors that Full Pitch, the RC heli frame and upgrade manufacturer I'm pilot for. One thing Georges is clued up on is BLS motors and speedies.

RE: RC Surfer
Leopard sound like they think they own brushless tech, they're dreaming. I reckon I will be able to get the answer to this question via the owner of one of the leading manufaturers of brushless motors on the market. Sorry Leopard, you sound like a bunch of pretentious so & so's, saying that Y & D tech is secret, if it's so secret, then why can the multitude of other BLS motor manufacturers produce motors with these windings?

RE: RC Surfer
I find landing those kind of moves is no problem, the amount of rotation is more down to luck. It's hard to get that right as I miss the feed back the wave gives as if I was riding it myself so it's hard to know how much "punch' to give it.

RE: RC Surfer
I reckon getting footage is great....getting to relive the memories visually doubles the stoke. I would never take any vids posted up here as blokes trying to prove something. For instance that vid I posted a couple of pages back of me surfing the ledge, I share it for the pure stoke it brings to those who already know the feeling and to add a little to those who don't....after 30+ yrs surfing I have nothing to prove to anyone apart from the message that life is great, live it and be happy.

RE: RC Surfer
ORIGINAL: Cananzi Tripper / Kite Where you been hiding these ideas?
The flex tail idea popped into my head as soon as I read your last post. There must be a definate thoery re the physical effect at differents speeds using a tail like this, ie. water flowing under the flex area at different speeds creating a downward or upward force. Maybe Dom with his boat experience can add some value to this idea?

RE: RC Surfer
Has anyone thought of using a flex tail setup like some of the old school board shapers used? What are your thoughts, would this be of advantage if the tail was thin enough and had sufficient flex to enable tail rockler change at low and high speed? Or would the flex give the opposite to the preferred rocker at speed to stop the bounce effect?

RE: RC Surfer
I had no idea of the bind issues with 2.4 on water, I wondered why I was having so many brown out moments. I had a HK-300 3ch 2.4 TX, that worked reasonably well until it would no longer bind to any RX, as a back up I used my Spektrum DX7, that has constant brown outs every time the surfer drops behind a wall of whitewater. I was thinking it was a problem with the electronics in the surfer itself. What TX's have you guys had success with on water?

RE: RC Surfer
G'day fellas, long time no see. I'm a little lost, tried to log onto RCSWW and it's gone??? Then I see here Jimi has pulled the pin as well. I've been away working in Botswana, out of range so to speak, get back and obviously something's gone down that's drastically changed the landscape of the Oz RC surfer crew. At least this place has seen some action, good to see some builds steaming ahead. I would like to get cracking on my own build but I can't see that happening until at least the start of next year. With work, another six week trip to Botswana plus some other gigs around the place, then the big pack and move the family interstate it's just not going to happen. I'll have to live vicariously through you guys.

daign, if all fails my LHS is selling the NQD for $75AUD each, he has a stack of em...he used them as a container filler on his last shipment of gear for his shop. www.niftyrc.com.au/index.php/component/virtuemart/ don't know his policy on international shipping but he's a good bloke, I'm sure you could work something out. I got one, threw out all the stock electrics/TX, replaced it with HK stuff, under $200 inc postage to upgrade. Then of course there is a few hours work to get it seaworthy but by the looks of your previous work that no problem for you.

RE: RC Surfer
Kitekook, great white light and Silver Surfer story mate, in the other forums I am a member of Silver Surfer is my avatar I got my NQD in the water today, very happy, no leaks but I have weight adjustment to do, CG was too far back and self righted every time fast. Ran it on 2S lipo (quick) and 7.2v nimh (not quick enough) and the fin is too big, need to cut it down in size. Motor and speedie ran cool, I was right about the heat sink shorting out the fets, not frying them but just screwing with the pulse. One downer was the RX lost it's bind and wouldn't re-bind at all so I had to improvise and use my DX7.

RE: RC Surfer
Theory behind the P2 is that the wide nose area allows nose riding and traditional mal riding techniques while the skinny middle allows it to be surfed like a short board when you step on the back foot. I've surfed the 7'6" & 8'0", they're quick, agile and drive extremely well. The 8'0' is capable of nose rides only seen on 9' plus mals. The 7'6" was like surfing a 6' 3', 6'6" short board. The quality of the P2's is by far some of the best off the rack I've seen, the glass work is excellent. rcd, I like your shapes man, I'd love to surf one.

RE: RC Surfer
I too am thinking of going quad fin, with a board shape in the style of Tyler Moore's Mini Simmons. Another design I would like to experiment with is the Meyerhoffer P2 shape. I've surfed both these boards and they go very well, it would be interesting to see if some of the performance benefits could translate into RC boards.

RE: RC Surfer
Kitekook, you just caused me to have a flash bulb moment. I think I am the reason my ESC died, when I covered it in the Uerethane spray I didn't remove the heat sink, after I was done the heat sink fell off as the tape used wasn't very sticky. It kept falling off so I wrapped the ESC with some vinyl tape as I had no heat shrink large enough to keep the heat sink attached, however I realise now I forgot to put the double sided heat sink tape back in. The ali heat sink is sitting directly on the fets, doh!
