RE: Help me figure out this mechanical advantage in the servos
yeah, that's also what my buddy said. Mine seems to be right about 1 degree, as you mentioned. could be a little more a little less. I didn't think it woudl do much. Maybe If I start flying pattern, butI don't know that I would with this plane anyway thanks for your help Tim

RE: Help me figure out this mechanical advantage in the servos
Thanks Mr. ? Extreme flight :) I called you guys and was going to ask about this but I got the message. I did have another question for you that I haven't gotten a solid answer to though. the tail is off kilter a bit. My friend made me aware that this was a common problem in the first run. The person at your company who emailed me back wasn't aware of it, but my buddy pointed me to the site that the owner there (maybe you?) had posted replies addressing the problem. I was just looking for the fix. He said at one time there was an instructional video. I don't want any compenstation or to have you guys fix it, I just want to take care of it myself. but would like to see the correct info on it thanks for any help on that.

RE: Help me figure out this mechanical advantage in the servos
Hey Guys Thanks for all the help! The servos I think were limited a little through programming. I used the HPP 21 to RESET defaults (center and end points) and it was getting WAY more throw then. SO I guess whoever had it before me limited those for some reason (probably ignorance mostly). I'm getting what I need now I think. Thank you again! The carbon fiber arms came with the extreme flight plane originally. But you can get good aluminum arms from mpi hanger 9 etc http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=HAN9151

RE: Help me figure out this mechanical advantage in the servos
Hey Guys thanks for all your help. I am running dual aileron. They are the same type of servos. I'm thinking the programming is off in one over the other. It seems to me they should be closer than they are otherwise. I don't know how I can check that though... maybe add a stick 12" long to the arm and see how much range they get? I don't have a programmer for hitecs. These are programmable, but what do I use to change it? I've never done this. When I said I'm getting 33 up and down, 42 up and down, those were based on having some SLIGHT adjusment in radio. so if I was getting 44 and 42 on one side I set the travel adjustment to 42. So there is SOME differential I guess, but not much? Does that sound about as much as you'd expect? Thank you all for the info! It's been really informative.

Help me figure out this mechanical advantage in the servos
Hey Guys I have a 50cc extreme flight yak. In one of the ailerons I'm getting 33 degress of throw up and down (with about 140 travel adjustment) and in the other about 42 up and down. They are both on the same hole in the servo arm. They are both in the same hole in the control horn. I'm wondering if there's a slight change in either of these 2 posistions (see photos) how steep of an angle there is from the arm to the horn (how far from paralell) or how much of an angle there is from the top to bottom (far from paralell) If you look at hte photos, can you tell me if I'd gain a mechanical advantage if I altered either of these? I.e., if I moved towards the red or the green line Thanks! Tim

RE: Full Scale Aircraft wing loading??
sorry about that. I was expressing incorrectly, but I guess my point being, that it does seem to be a better indicator of flying charecteristics, but a full scale plane is WAY out of this range. I think it's like 22 for a full scale edge from what i found onilne, vs, 9 for a good 3d ing plane.

Full Scale Aircraft wing loading??
Hey Guys, I was just wondering, and thought someone here may be able to answer. What is the wingloading of a full scale aircraft? such as a red bull edge etc. the cubic wing loading stays pretty consistent... meaning if you have a 60" plane with cubic wing loading of 9oz/in, and a 130" plane with a cubic wing loading of 9oz/in, they will fly about the same in terms of lightness etc. Does a full scale have anywhere near as light of wing loading (relatively speaking) as rc planes? Or are they much heavier? they seem to float more, but all the math I can figure, they are WAY Heavier in scale terms. Is that why real planes can't hover and do some of the more extreme manuvers you can get away with in rc? or is it power? Or both?

Small Heli for First timer, BUT with experience...
Hey Guys I've been flying planes for a year. Can hover, torque roll, rolling harrier, harrier, knife edge etc etc. I have ONLY flown heli's on the simulator, but can fly inverted loop, tic toc, sideways loop etc. Not every well yet, but needless to say I can do more than hover I was wanting to get a little heli that i can mess around with. I was looking at the novus CP from Tower hobbies. Or the Blade CP from Horizon. both can fly inverted and do some amount of aerobatics I guess. The advantages I like with the Novus, is that it's small and I can fly indoors. I like the blade becuase I can get the plug and play version and it's only $170, and I can hook it up to my DX7. I guess i"ll need a receiver so it will be about the same price. What would you do? Any other micros that you'd recommend? thanks Tim

RE: New 60-90 Extra 260
I don't think flaperons are necessary. It lands ok, with a just a little speed. If you want to 3D with it though, you will probably have to take weight out. What's the weight and wing area of your bigger AW plane? What did your 60-90 wieght come out to?

RE: New 60-90 Extra 260
I flew without the wheel pants (2 oz), though the fliton I had them on. I went to a wood prop, instead of APC (1.5) went to a bolt and nut for axles instead of their heavier ones and smaller wheels I think too (.5) lipo and regulator instead of NIMH (2.5) lighter swtich (.5) throttle servo to micro (1oz) tail wheel to little dubro one (.5) Cut out wood under the fuel tank and on sides top and bottom of motor mount box (.75), probably could have safely gotten 1oz out. This adds up to 9.5oz. I probably got a little more than I'm quoting on the lipo (I went to a 900mah lipo, vs 1300mah nimh) and these are estimates (they were my conservative guesses at the time). It ended up being 11oz total. Now, the fliton, had a MICRO servo on the throttle ALREADY, otherwise, all the other things, PANTS/APC PROP/NIMH/ was all on it, or was stock gear (meaning I didn't TRY to reduce weight on the fliton, but it had some lighter parts already). I REALLY do like the AW. It flies well now, but it still is a little snappy compared to my new 50cc. I think I could get it even lighter (more wood dremeled out, repace the pull pull with kevlar and ONE clevis etc) could probably scrape out another 1 - 1.5 oz. The fliton had an untimely demise, but I think it flew probably more like my 50cc. Which is a FEAT in this size. I am totaly conviced that if you look at cubic wing loading though, that is the real clue to how a plane will fly I can give you the forumula. But basically my 50cc has about 8.97 (cubic wingloading) the fliton had 8.88, and the AW has 9.72. In my experience, you get the number around 9 or lower, and the plane flies great, whether its a 50cc gas or a 30" electric.

RE: New 60-90 Extra 260
I think the Fliton extra is a great plane. I would recommend it over the aeroworks if you are wanting to do 3d. I got the AW to fly almost as well, but I took 11 oz off, through this and that (I can tell you what all I did to it if you want). But I still only got the AW to 6/5. The fliton was 5/15 out without trying. Flew great. Was a pain to build, but it was all little things (I had to make my own way to secure hatch. Had to put your own blind nuts in on canopy, cowl. Had to make my own wood tabs for the cowl. Etc etc. Just little bs, that slowed it down. But flying wise. very good plane. If you want a GREAT looking plane, that flys well get the Aeroworks. If you want it to look great have a great build AND do 3d well, you'll have to lighten it. If you just want a pretty cool looking plane that flies REALLY well (3d), get the fliton

If you are using 6v, they should be fine. I'm using DS821's with no issues, and I flew a similar sized plane with saito 100 in it and similar surfaces with Hitec 475hb's

Hey guys I have a stock super cub. It looks like the new LP version, has the same motor and just adds a lipo battery. Can I just add a 11.1v Lipo to my stock version, to give it more power? The motor will obviously be able to handle it. How about the esc? thanks! Tim

LED lights for planes from hobby city
Hey Guys I got some of these lights to do some night flying http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8941 I'm not sure how to use them though. They lit with a 2s, they lit with a 3s. Not sure how much you are supposed to give them. It says working voltage 12v. If I wanted to set them up to switch on with an extra channel, how would I do that? With a servo that connects a wire or something? Thanks! Tim

RE: How to build stand off box for 50cc engine
Hi. I probably wasn't very clear as this is my first gas engine so I haven't dealt with the terminology. The standoffs the came with the engine are being used, in conjuction with a stack of 5 washers that are about 1/4" thick each so 1 1/4". The total length with the stand offs is probably close to 2" or more. I guess it's becuase the yak it's on has a long cowl. any suggestions?

Eflite f-15 what type of motor
Hey guys. I saw the article in AMA on this plane. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFL7050 I like it for the money. I've never owned a Jet at all. Just 3d planes. I see they recommend 2 420 ducted fan engines. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EFLM1340DF I am placing an order soon iwth Hobby city anyway, and I figured I'd save some cash and order a couple engines there. Other than going with a high KV (3500 about?) do the engines have to have certain requirments (other than proper size/amps etc). For example, do they attach to the fans differently than a normal motor I'd use for a 3d plane? Can you recommend a particular engine from HC that I can use on it? Also, will I need 2 seperate Esc's? Or just one? I guess just one right? thanks! Tim

How to build stand off box for 50cc engine
Hey Guys I have a 50cc plane I bought used, and it is in good shape, but they used 5 washers behind the stand offs for the DA50. This brought it out an extra 1 1/4" to 1 1/2". I called DA and they said they do NOT recommend the washers. How do I build a stand off box? Obviously it has to have room to let the carb clear. Does anyone have any photos of how to do it, or a site that has instructions? Thanks Tim

RE: Fliton Extra 330s 120C Build Thread
For this plane's particular's, you can trust Jemini - he's a good guy and has good experience. I was going to get this one, but found a great deal on 2 50cc planes (one ready, one empty), so I had to pass on this one. this likely would have been the one for me otherwise. All planes that fly well have weak landing gear :) It's the first place to stress on a bad landing and the stronger you make it the more weight you add, the worse the plane flys. Definitly get better and better and better at landings, but it sounds like Jemini's were a little weak for sure. Sounds like the planes landing block was fine, just the gear bent up on him

RE: Fliton Extra 330s 120C Build Thread
My 2cents - side mounting should be fine with cooling. I doubt you will need the glow ign., so I would scrap it. I have a saito 100 at an inverted 45 and it runs BEAUTIFULLY. It can idle so slow it doesn't even crawl, and will idle for a full mintue or longer. For filling you can add a fuel dot, but what I think is easier is to run an extra tube with a clunk, and just have it reach out the bottom of the cowl. When you are done filling, tuck it back in the cowl and you're good to go. no chance of air leak like with a dot.

Well my wings are already built up, so could I just sheet the leading edge and then sand it with a block, side to side (wing tip to wing base) until it was flush with the spar? Basically have the balsa taper?

RE: Sig Four Star .40 Build Thread!!!!!!!!
I'm pretty sure you will just be adding floatiness with flaps. And if you go with the original wingspan you certainly should not need flaps/more float

RE: Sig Four Star .40 Build Thread!!!!!!!!
Hey Guys Couple questions for you all. I had built a 4 star modified, and then crashed it. I have a kit I picked up from a guy 50% done and I think I'm going to try to finish it up. On the wings, they are already built, how hard would it be to cover the leading edge, so you don't see the ribs. I hated that on my last one? I'm not sure how you would "blend" it out, now that the wings are already built, so that it doesn't have a step down. On the wings, I've heard a lot of people say to cut the wings down. Take out the last bay on each side. That would make mine about 54" wingspan. Is this correct? It was a little floaty for me out of the box. Thanks! Tim

RE: New Aeroworks .60/.90 Planes
I should be able to make that work. I'll see if I can get it some video up wtih my own camera. Mine does seem to float down a little slower than yours does. But that doesn't surprise me, I think you said yours was 6/8? I got mine to 6/5 and while that doesn't seem like much, the cubic wing difference there is 9.62:9.91. I would love to get mine to 6/2 (9.34). but I have a 50cc that I just picked up, so my efforts on this one may cease for now. I've found planes around 9:1-9:3 really float nice (regardless of size). Not that I have that much experience with many planes but I've found the Cubic Wing Loading formula to be WAY more useful. If this plane weighed 6/2, do you think the 82 would pull it well enough???

RE: New Aeroworks .60/.90 Planes
I didn't end up trying that, but I do remember guys who did that on the Fliton extra 330 hybrid. It should be fine. You're biggest risk would be flutter, so just be sure to seal your hinge lines. BTW, I was at the field last night, and while I was flying I heard a guy talking to a buddy of mine saying somethign like, "what size? A .60? ... ... that's not a 60 size. " Then I had 3 people tell me, in the hour I was up there, that my plane flies REALLY well, and I should be really happy with it. I told them that I shaved 11 oz doing this and that. a couple of hte guys siad they had seagulls etc, similar size 62" etc, that were at 8lbs! And they were hoping to get down. If I was going to stay with nitro, I would probably buy a new airframe in this plane, cut the holes in the wood, do all the other things I did, a few I didn't, and I think I could get to 6/2. I WANT to get some video for you guys. You won't belive how it floats. Even wyatt was keeping his from twitching out of hover. He's good enough to balance it, but mine gently floats out of hover.
