RE: RCPRO Warbird Race August 25 (Chino Valley)
Another great race in the books. The crew from Chino Valley are an exceptional bunch and I think everyone there had a great time. Thanks to the club for putting on a fun and exciting event and to everyone who came out to help and participate. Can't wait for next year!

RE: Kyosho P-40 retract question
Thought I would post a follow up. I was able to repair the retracts and make them workable and so far have held up quite well. I found the problem and was able to re-tap the hole and make a decent repair. I also changed the rods from the bell crank and soldered a clevis on the end to make them a little more stable and less slop. I am still not real sure about the adjustments on the gear, considering one of them is on the bottom side and requires removing them out of the wing to adjust, but they are working fine and so far I am having no worries as long as my landings are smooth and clean. However, another issue came to light a few months back. I use this plane for racing, (which by the way is one of the best racing planes I have flown, flies on rails), and during a race the covering on the side of the fuse came loose and tore a section about 4" high and 10" inches long. I had to stop flying for the day and decided I would fix it when I got home. I got looking closer at it and it almost appears the covering is a little porous. I ended up recovering the entire plane and in doing so, used no heat whatsoever to remove the old covering and found that oil had soaked into the wood along the entire side of the fuse as well as some sizeable spots on the horizontal and vertical tail sections. It took some time to get the oil out but it ended up working out okay. The plane is a real blast to fly and I would recommend it to anyone, however I would definitely check the covering and make sure it is good if using a glow engine.

The important thing is that you at least try it, whatever "it" is. Get people out and make sure they have a good time, everything else will begin to fall into place. Good luck!

RE: Club 40/46 Race in Amarillo, 2013
Dwayne, Is there any way that you would consider breaking it into two seperate classes and running only the .40's together and only the .46's together? Are you requiring a spec. airframe, (i.e., like all Skyraiders or LA racers, etc.)? One thing I can see that might become a bit problematic is the management of the race. It will probably take some time to sort out who came in what position during each heat which could slow things down a bit and cause headaches for the course workers and timers, etc. I think you may also find that by running both engines together it could cause some to not have a good time. I can attest to the fact that a .46 will have a noticebale speed advantage over the .40, (that is assuming you are talking about the .46 FX or AX, not the LA .46), and during the day the flyers will become more comfortable with the course. If the guys with the bigger engines start over running the smaller engines it may cause some ill will. Just my $0.02

I sent the race results to Terry a couple of days ago but not sure if he is working on it or not. I will try to get the results posted here if possible. I need to get in touch with a guy that was taking pictures, (Gomez, if you are listening), and will get them on here as well when I get them. It was a great day Glen, wish you could have been there. Temps in the mid to high 80's, almost no wind whatsoever, blue skies....Very nice.

RE: RCPRO Warbird Race May 19, 2012, St. George, Utah
According to what I can find, the RCPro rules state: "The only models qualified to be entered in a RCPRO Warbird event must be scale models replicating heavier than air, fixed wing, propeller driven, man carrying, military aircraft that were in production after January 1, 1937, or scale models of non-military aircraft that have raced in the unlimited category of the Reno or Mojave Air Races or in an unlimited air race affiliated with the Unlimited Air Racing Association". The Tucano was first flown in 1980 and placed into service in 1983 and was used by the Brazilian Air Force, Egyptian Air Force, Argentine Air Force, Peruvian Air Force and the Royal Air Force. It is sold on Tower Hobbies under the Almost Ready to Fly Scale section and the wing area is good, so, from what I can see, it is legal to run. I am currently running a TT Pro .61 with a stock pipe on a Kyosho P-40 and it is competitive, (well, it will break out in Bronze if I really push it). The wing and fuse on the P-40 is a little bulky compared to the Tucano so I would think that the .55 would be a good combo so........COME ON DOWN!!

RE: Shuttle solid booster ride up and back
Woketman, I didn't say they were qualified, I said they are in the process of doing the qualification tests on the motors. They added a 5th segment and are having to do some more engineering on the nozzle since the vectoring on the current SRB's needs to be improved. The company I work for manufactures the main ingredient for the propellant in the boosters, (and just about every other solid fuel motor that is produced, i.e., the Atlas, Tomohawk, Sparrow, etc.). I have been involved with the Shuttle program since 1989. There are two vehicles in the works, as to who will end up producing the boosters for either or both of them remains to be seen. That is, if they decide to go with solid fuel rather than hand it over to private business and for some reason are swayed to think that liquid fuel will work better. One is a manned flight vehicle and the other being the heavy lift. Whether either of these will ever see the darkness of space remains to be seen, but I can tell you from personal experience that we have just processed over 1 million pounds of Ammonium Perchlorate to be used for either a demonstration or qualification motor to be cast within the near future. Where it goes from here is anyone's guess, let's just hope it goes the right direction. This is a video I took of the Ares Development Motor 2, (DM-2), firing on Aug. 31, 2010. This is a 5 segment motor. http://youtu.be/QFD0rbd-7zU

RE: Shuttle solid booster ride up and back
There is a bright spot in that a new heavy lift and seperate manned vehicle are being developed and the boosters are almost to the qualification stages. Just hope that it all comes together as intended so we can get back to the lead in space exploration....My job kinda depends on it.

Dont' know about the decals, didn't even really look at mine so not sure if they are the peel and stick or what. Also, do you test alot of planes on your lawn right there or are you practicing your golf swing with your short irons there as well?

RE: What engine for my P51?
Oh yeah, sorry, I hid them in the fuse. It was really quite simple and easy. Yes, I added the stripes just for that reason, that is, to make it easier to see. I have used monokote over ultracote for graphics. Just make sure the surface is really clean and don't spend alot of time ironing it down. The black stripes on this plane are Ultracote.

RE: What engine for my P51?
Jeremy, Here are a few pics for reference. I used 4-40 rods and soldered the clevis on one end and left the other end adjustable then ran the rods out through the existing holes for the elevators. It's kinda tough to tell, but you can see the rails that I epoxied in and then put the servos in. I cut the hole in the bottom of the fuse between the formers and then re-inforced the area around the hole with balsa then covered the hole with clear monokote. Hope it all makes sense.

RE: What engine for my P51?
Hey Jeremy, the recommended 5" is good. If anything you may want it just a touch nose heavy. If it is a little tail heavy it becomes a little twitchy on landing. You are going to want a little speed when landing but all in all they land quite well, not necessarily like a trainer but I have had no real problems with the landings. I forgot to get a picture of the elevator servos, I will try to get one this afternoon. I ended up cutting a doubler to go along the one that runs inside the fuse then used pine rails and epoxied them to the doublers. It's hard to explain so I will get a picture posted. you will definitely want to add rails and strength if you are going to put the servos in the tail. It is really quite simple and doesn't take alot of time but I am as sure as I can be that the wood on the side of the fuse won't be enough to take the stress. The 485's should be fine, I have never used them but according to the specs they would be okay. I use Futaba S3004's, ($13.99 each from Servo City), all around on my Rocklwell on 4.8 volts and have had no problems. Keep in mind that I use this plane strictly for racing so the control surfaces don't move very much but I have used the 3004's on alot of things and have never really had any problems with them.

RE: What engine for my P51?
Mach2, They hold 2 races during the year in Hesperia under the RCPro warbird rules: http://www.rcpro.org/content/rcpro/warbird_racing/rules/default.aspx. The next race will be in September. There will be races held in St. George, Utah in May and one in Prescott, AZ in August. Phoenix is in October and Tuscon in December. They hold warbird races in the Sacramento area as well under a different rules set. Their website is here: http://www.sacramento-rc-flyers.org/ You'll be pleased with the performace with the .61. Unless you are looking for all out speed, the .61 will be plenty. Not sure about the 4 blade prop, think it may just be for show but don't think it will give very good performance. The CG should be measured next to the fuse from the leading edge of the wing AND make sure you do it with the wheels up. The pics are of my current Rockwell with the TT Pro .91 with a stock pipe. The prop is a 13 X 8N and turns 11,500 on the ground with 30% nitro. The other one is my Voodoo with a TT Pro .61 with a Nelson pipe and an 11 X 7 prop, (I think). I built the Voodoo and flew for awhile then sold it to another guy who wanted to race.

Fuel proof paint?
I had to do an impromptu repair on a cowl and need the plane this weekend for an event. Is there some version of hardware store paint that is fuelproof or at least will last for a few flights? I am not concerned with color, texture or finish just that it will cover the repaired area and not flake or wear off right away. I do not have a hobby store close by and don't know that there is enough time to order and get some here. Any thoughts?
