RE: What plane (brand new to hobby)
Best thing to do is find the local RC flying club and speak with one of the instructors. They may even have a club buddy-box trainer available. Cheers, Tim

RE: Flying wing gliding in high winds
Does it matter? The wing will be at a zero speed as it will be traveling the same speed as the weather ballon. However it will gain speed quicker from the launch if it is pointing into the wind. My assumption is that you'll have the proper approvals and wavers from the FAA...

RE: Need to fix warped rudder and vert stab.
Steam it and then press it on a flat surface with a bunch of weight. Let it sit for day or so and pull it out. Should be straight. Will need to sand smooth again as it will raise the grain a bit when you steam it... I had the same issue and this worked for me. Get the wood steamed pretty good.

RE: Crashed the Seagull Spacewalker II 120 and thinking of rebuilding
It would seem that there is more to this issue of getting out of a flat spin then just the wing... The two things that come to my mind are the CG location and control throw. If the CG is to far aft it would make it very difficult to come out of a spin. Secondary issue is the rudder control throw not enough (or for that matter surface area of the rudder) to counter the spin... I was always taught to point the nose down, neutralize the controls, cut the throttle and then full rudder in the opposite direction of the spin... If that didn't work then the CG was too far aft.. Just my two cents worth and always open to learning something new and different...

What size fuel tubing and are you using muffler pressure? Should be using medium size tubing and pretty direct connections. If you are using a three line set, be sure to plug the overflow/vent line or muffler pressure will do no good. Just my 2 cents worth..

RE: Sig Kadet LT-40 Build
ORIGINAL: FlyingTgr6 I redid the vertical stab this weekend and got the horizontal stab done. The rounded leading edges turned out better than I thought they would. It's a learning experiance, but it seems to be turning out just fine. Since I don't have a motor or servos yet, I'm thinking that I'm going to continue on to the wings. Any tips out there before I start? Won't let me upload pics for some reason, I'll have to try again later.
Follow the instructions carefully and make sure your building board is flat. No sags or warps as they will be built into the wing. I take a 48" steel ruler and place it length wise from one end to the other to check. I place a desk lamp behind the ruler and check for gaps of light coming from the edge in contact with the table top. If I see light then its time to make adjustments or replace the table. I build from solid core doors bought at HomeDepot or Lowes.

RE: Help with dual battery system
I'm not so sure that running two battery packs in parallel without some sort of isolation between the two packs is such a good idea. What if one of the cells in the battery packs should go bad? Won't that cause the other good pack to bleed voltage down? Wouldn't it be better to have one of the commercially available battery backers installed? That is what I did with my turbine and never had a problem. Even lost the primary pack and the receiver and servos continued to function. Didn't notice in flight but when I landed the health indicator LED should that there was. Saved the $7500 I had wrapped up into that one jet... Just my 2 cents worth...

RE: Sig Kadet LT-40 Build
ORIGINAL: Admiral052 I am planning on recovering my SIG LT-40 after the summer and this is my scheme below. I know it doesn't exist for this type of plane but hey we make our planes what we want! Also something else to think about in your build is converting the wing attachment over to bolt on wings. I hate using the rubber bands. I plan on converting it also. There is a great post on doing this will lots of advice and guidance on how they did it.
Mind sharing the post link on how they converted to bolt on wings?

RE: Sig Kadet LT-40 Build
you'll do fine on this build.... Only thing that I would use a little more caution with is being careful with you T-pin incertions through the sticks. Be careful how close to the ends you get. On soft balsa its okay, but the first time you try to push one through a peice of hard balsa you'll risk the chance of spliting the end. My practice with building has been pin the front and aft leading edges of the structure to the building board. Then using the thin CA glue and hold the pieces of wood together and let the thin CA wick into the joint. When it is set (usually within 10 to 30 seconds) release my hold and move on to the next piece. When all fished putting the pieces together, I'll carefully remove the finished structure from the building board and follow up with medium CA to strengthen the joints and allow it to fill what ever gaps are there. If they are a bit larger then expected, place some balsa sawdust (left over from sanding another part) into the gap and CA it in place. This practice has work for nearly a dozen airframes that I've build and never had a failure from a glue joint.

RE: Sig Kadet LT-40 Build
ORIGINAL: soarrich I bought one of these, works great. http://www.harborfreight.com/power-tools/cut-off-saws/bench-top-cut-off-saw-42307.html I found if you don't build a lot you can just cut the piece long, then use the edge of the door, (I build on a hollow core door), to keep the sanding block vertical and sand in the angled cut. After I have the angle right I use the edge and the end of the door to get a nice square end on the piece at the right length.
Thats a cool piece of hardware to have. will have to go check it out.... Thanks for sharing....

RE: Sig Kadet LT-40 Build
Thank you for the great comments... I've built a few airplanes to get to the quality that shows. The two tools that I shared with you will help keep your cuts straight and true. Follow my reccomendation of cutting just slightly over-length and then use the sanding tool to get the part to fit perfectly. Do exercise some care when sanding. As it is easy to go too far. Just do a stroke or two, check the fit and make the necessary adjustments. True it may take a little longer to get the peices built, but having near perfect fit on the cuts will certainly show their worth with the finished product. If you have the same experience as I did, you'll want to show off your work and use the transparent film to cover the airplane and show off your hard earned work. Good luck on the build. Search the RCU for idea's on how to do things and always ask questions. There are a ton of really wonderful folks here that would love to share some of their building knowledge and experience. Its what makes this hobby so rewarding. The fellowship with a common interest...

RE: Sig Kadet LT-40 Build
I would have to agree... Being that this is your first airplane and a first to take up into the air with your fists on the radio, I would strongly recommend that the bottom and top of the airplane be covered in two contrasting colors. This helps with you identifying the top from the bottom of the airplane while in flight. Stay away from blues and green colors. Reds, yellows and oranges seem to be the better colors and maybe through some black markings in for good measure. All of this will help with identifying (in a panic situation) which way is up or down. Save the fancy covering jobs for a later date. You'll be glad that you did... Just my 2 cents worth.

RE: Need Advice on Cutting Consistent Wing Ribs
I've done the same thing as kdc and have great success. Trick is to have a template made of harder material then the balsa wood ribs. To cut the notches for the spars I do the same thing but will use one of the wifes finger nail files to sand the the notch line. I found them to work perfectly and they come in numerous grit values to meet the hobbiest needs. Cheers,

RE: building rc plane.
I've seen so many guys get sucked into these poorly designed minimal control type airplanes. They are a waste of money and make the hobby out to be bad. Best advice is to check with the local hobby shop and have them point you to the local RC club.... If that isn't available them try a flight simulator on the home computer. But please don't waste your money on these piece of crap airplanes. They only lead to frustration and a significant loss of money....

RE: Monokote....Never Again
Trying to get TopFlight or Great Planes to admit they changed the formula has been pushed before and they just politically spin it. I use to love working with it and had many a good covering jobs on my airplanes. But the last attempt of using the stuff two years ago had me walking away as a long term user of thier product. Its crap and I'll never use it again. Which sucks as I really liked the transparent film to show off the wood work. Can't do that anymore. I look at it as their loss and Ultracoat's gain... With the current market and the trends of the hobby now (huge focus on cheap Chinese ARF's and RTF's) I don't see the situation changing which is sad since many of us RC old-timers got 60% of the enjoyment of building and spent the last 40% out at the field showing off something that we created and flying.... Its just sad from my perspective.... Maybe I'm getting too old....
