RE: Brian Taylor Bf109E-4 build
I still have not flown her yet. Since moving into a new house my rc stuff including the 109 has been packed away for a while. I'll be sure to post when I do finally her in the air.

RE: Top Flight Spitfire Question
there isn't a template on the plans. it's actually a scaled down version in the back of the instruction booklet so not much use. here is how i did it..... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1403165/mpage_2/key_top%2Cflight%2Cspitfire/tm.htm# .....look at the last post on the page.

RE: Sig 1/6th J3 Cub
hi Anthony, let me thank you again for the info on thecubden.org. found a few new things there. anyway, your Waco is what i was attempting to achieve on the cub but i think i came up short. you did a much better job and it looks very good. 1/6th scale is just so hard to scale details down and still have them look good. i think i'm going to start building larger scale models.[;)]

RE: Sig 1/6th J3 Cub
i've been fairly busy on the model for the last week or so working on rib stitching. i must admit i know little about rib stitching, i've never studied it up close on the real thing and i'm not sure how it's done on the real thing. for models, i know there are several methods for stitching and i was looking for the easiest and quickest. i thought using white glue would do the trick for me. i tried it on the upper wing but try as i might i could not get the glue "stitches" small enough for this scale model. the wing looks a bit "Frankenstein" which is unfortunate. next, i tried the method presented in thecubden.org for the tail feathers. i'm not sure who owns the site so i can not credit him by name but the method is very effective. instead of rehashing the "how-to" here i'll just give the link if you want to check it out at http://www.thecubden.org/cubmenu/cubmain.html. i used different tapes depending on what i can get in Taiwan and the smallest thread i could find instead of fishing line. so far just the horizontal stab/elev has been completed but i'm much happier with this method even though i still think the stitching is a bit big for this scale. i'll just post the photos of the work i've done and skip the step-by-step as they're pretty self explanatory.

RE: Sig 1/6th J3 Cub
since it's too late to reproduce true-to-scale aileron control i'll just have to simulate it as best i can. the actual control comes underneath with the servo installed in the wing so i'll be simulating the top half. the first pic is is what i'm trying to simulate. the first thing was to make a control cable housing cover. since i don't have vacuum formng capability i used the simple method of pulling a couple of covers from a press form and heat gun using scrap plastic. the aileron horn is two pieces of K&S tin sheet cut to shape and glued together. the clevice is made from a couple different sizes of aluminum tube and some decorative hooks from the arts/crafts store. a toothpick is used to join the clevice and horn and at this scale the taper in the toothpick looks fairly close to a screw and bolt on each side. the best part is the control cable itself is just elastic cord attached to the clevice on one end and to another hook hidden beneath the cover on the other which will allow for movement in the cord without going slack with the aileron in the up position. i won't be able to make the final attachment until the wing is finally painted.

RE: Sig 1/6th J3 Cub
opened up the fuselage to accept the refueling pipe and lined the hole with aluminum flashing. my mistake of not using fiberglass in this area prior to putting down aluminum tape is starting to rear it's ugly head as i'm getting a lot of dents while working on this. fortunately, i'm pretty much done in this area. the brass "pipe" is glued to a piece of balsa underneath.

the other thing i made was the gas cap. this is just model lab board shaped and glued to a piece of brass tubing. i still need to mount to the inside of the cowl.

RE: Sig 1/6th J3 Cub
been working on a couple of things. i was looking for a way to help hide the gap between the front windscreen and the wing. the full size cub has a metal fairing that does just the job so i will try to duplicate it. this cover will also hide the joint between the wing and center fuselage section. since this cover will span the wing-fuselage joint i made a fiberglass fairing that won't damage easily when the model is not assembled and there isn't any underlying support. using the wing as guide i shaped some hard foam to span the center wing section. then laid up 5 layers of .75oz cloth over a wax paper protective barrier. i used the lighter weight cloth because it draped easier around the leading edge curve. then filled, sanded, primed and cut to shape. most of the center section still needs to be relieved to accept the windscreen but that comes later and will be the tricky part to making this look good. this fairing will actually be glued to the fuselage/wing section and not the wing itself. the two metal strips are just soft aluminum glued to the wing and fair into the cabin sides per the full size.

RE: Sig 1/6th J3 Cub
added a few more details. i needed to simulate some metal in the nose aft of the cowl. used some aluminum tape for this. i still have some filling and sanding before priming. i made up a 5" x 5" square lamination of 2 x 3oz and 3/4oz fiberglass cloth from which i could cut out various inspection panels and covers. i chose this over aluminum tape to give more thickness to the part. finally added some white glue to simulate screws to the panels.

RE: Help with Simulated Metal
Trax, i throw this out as another alternative to 'glassing your model. here's what i did with my Sig Cub on which i'm currrently working. the entire fuselage is covered in Koverall. i initially applied a couple of coats of nitrate dope to seal the fabric and later i applied a coat of lacquer primer and sanded to get rid of the nubs. last night i applied the aluminum tape. i still have to fill in the seams as this should look like one continuous metal panel. the dope and primer helped fill in enough of the fabric so that the weave did not show up through the tape. the one drawback is that the fabric won't prevent dents the way a 'glassed panel would.

RE: Sig 1/6th J3 Cub
thanks. that should help a lot. my original plan was to not scale the cubby out as the model is for my wife but as i found more info on Cubs i find myself getting sucked more into the scale aspects and we know where that leads..... now i need to determine how far i want to take it and how far i can as the model is already built and all the extra scale things were not planned for.

thanks Anthony. i've done some light sanding to get rid of the fabric nubs and will need to apply another light primer coat. i'm also mulling over how to do the dummy engine.

RE: Help with Simulated Metal
since you have already covered the bare wood i wouldn't remove it especially since it might damage the Koverall that you want to keep. i checked a chemical compatibilty chart and you shouldn't have any problems with epoxy over nitrate dope. you will need to smooth out the Koverall area your going to cover as well as you can so that will make prepping the 'glass surface easier before you apply the tape if your going to do that. you have a very nice model there. i would try these techniques on a scrap piece of wood (the same type as is on your actual model) complete with Koverall to make sure everything will work out as planned before you try it on the real thing. a couple of hours or evenings won't mean anything in the end. as for masking tape, i use general purpose stuff. if it's real sticky i apply it to my workbench first to remove some of the tack before applying to a model.

RE: Help with Simulated Metal
i'm assuming you'll be covering balsa or ply. if so, then you can use aluminum tape but you will still need to 'glass the balsa to get a smooth surface as the tape will show any and all imperfections in the balsa surface. i would go this route. to get the crisp edge you want, remove the cowl and tape any other edges that you don't want the epoxy or polyester to get to. then, after the 'glass/epoxy has cured sand the excess fiber from the taped edges to give you that clean edge. it will be much easier to smooth the 'glass around a compound curve than most other methods mentioned. also, the aluminum tape will also form to a compound curve with patience and practice. of course, using 'glass/epoxy will negate the need for the alum tape unless you want the look of unpainted metal or you want some wx'ing effects. i did something very similar on my Fairey Flycatcher except i didn't mask the edges as i didn't need the clean edge prior to covering with Solartex. here's the link to my RCU thead showing what i did: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1402894/mpage_2/key_/tm.htm hope this helps some.

RE: TF Spitfire build
as "liability" designed as the TF kits are, they're pretty strong. contest grade won't affect the strength, just the weight.

i can't recall the weight of my tail feathers but using contest grade over the kit supplied rock balsa will surely save weight.
