Better rudder assembley for hammer
In the process of rebuilding my old hammer, and have broken the rudder assembly. Anyone have recommendations for a decent metal rudder assembly that would fit this hull? just something simple for a ~24" hull, double rudders would be nice but I don't see it happening.

He does boat motors as well. First gas boat I drove was a big cat with one of his motors. probably wont worry with to many mods, Going to focus on getting a club together first.

RE: signature 57 for gas beginner
I actually found a really kicking deal on a rio that's been worked over by WHH. he wants 500$ shipped for it, it has a zenoah with a single tank of fuel through it(and it's a baja guy selling it, This isn't his first rodeo with gas motors...), has all WHH drive gear on it, has been re-fiberglassed internally(the stringer issues and such), a whh pipe, and upgraded servos(I'll be putting my own futaba radio in it). Seems like a pretty good deal all things considered, what do yall think? Motor modding wise, there's a guy locally who does some amazing port work, several local people have fully built zen 4-bolts in there Bajas he's done.

signature 57 for gas beginner
I know, groan, another beginner thread.... I have a couple of smaller electrics now, and want to step up to a larger gas hull. I have a friend with a shockwave 55, and am looking at something close to that size. Aeromarine's signature 57 caught my eye. Nice looking boat, good company from what I've read, and a comparable size to what I know is here locally. Is it a good enough handling boat for a beginner or am I biting more than I can chew off with it? Building does not scare me, I've built numerous cars from kit(I have a baja with better than 2500$ in upgrades on it...), and several airplanes from box-of-wood up. Probably run a zenoah of some variety, might let one of my local motor guys have a crack at doing some head work. Appreciate the feedback, Cory.

RE: TRAXXAS SPARTAN shipping
I got a pretty good look at it. The hull is a very thin fairly brittle plastic. Several of us(a couple of experienced boat guys included, I'm newer to boats) looked at it. My impressions where: Hull is thin, a good wake slap and I think you will see cracking. Forward of the main compartment the boat has a large cut Styrofoam block that appears to run all the way to to nose. Electronics- looks like a larger version of the standard vxl and appears to have a water jacket on it, not integrated into the motor. Running gear looked like nice quality aluminum pieces, minimal slop. no battery trays, batts are held down with hook and loop. I was just disappointed in the feel of the hull. Even my little aquacraft hull feels tougher than this one. It may very well prove me wrong, but the consensus at the shop is...meh. Even the owner doesn't plan to stock anymore once these two are gone.... I can get pics fro y'all if you want some, she'll probably have at least one for a bit. **edit I've never owned a villain but did mod one for a brushless motor for a friend not long ago. I'd say the villains hull FEELS tougher at minimum

it would be cool if you just wanted to get it rolling again, but understand it's never going to be capable of doing anymore than what it already does. Check out some of the online forums, I've seen several TC3's(just bought one) going for 70$ in roller.... We're putting a shaft drive only TC class together here in town, and are trying to shoot the target RTR price at under 200$.....it's easy to do.

Looking at one of these little cars at a LHS. What parts are compatible with them? It looks like an "r" suspension on a new style tub. I really like the little car, but the arms and linkages are WAYYYYYYY to flexible and soft.

Trying to fit a boat to a motor
I have a CY 2-bolt here, with a stuffed crank and some work on the transfers done. It came out of my baja(had a 36mm OBR head kit on it), but I've scored the piston(air filter tore in sand)). I would like to use it as a boat, and though about putting a water cooled head kit on it when I do(probably would go back as a 28.5, but other arrangments can be made depending on the head). What size hull would I be looking at for something like this? I had thought about a large catamaran or deep vee hull, Something to run on local lakes(large lakes). What about an outdrive unit? This will be a budget project, at least as far as the hull goes, are there in-expensive "ebay" hulls that would work?

RE: Is it time to build?
I'd say you have the build and go bug. You asked for advice on a relativley nice building kit, how big are you looking for? There's always the four star series, the 120 ids a great builder. I built a fun little plane once, I took a seniorita and built myself a low wing trainer. I've been looking at the AMR Eclipse 50 heavily, and it's a very similar quality and design to the four star series building wise, and by all accounts is a brilliant flier for even a second or third aircraft.

RE: Photographing RC planes.
Try moving your dial over into Program when shooting sports. Even with a 1d, I stay right there 99% of the time, as I have just a smidge of adjustability, but am still letting the camera meter for me. I think you misunderstand what I mean. 90% of a the ability to shoot is the photographers ability to look at his/her equipment, There subject, and there lighting conditions, and get the camera up to produce a quality, or correctable, shot. With sports shooting, even in auto, You still have to put your eye up to the camera, frame and snap the shot, whether it was meant to be perfect with no PP or 6 hours in photoshop. I put no stock in the ability to turn knobs really well. Ability is about seeing and knowing you can make something out of what you get. To me that's being a photographer, not obsessing over a perfect exposure. What made Ansel Adams one of the greatest photographers in the field of our time? It wasn't his ability to twist knobs and have the perfect exposure(because some of his most famous ones AREN'T), it was his ability to frame a shot, to work with the gear he had to make the best looking photo he could produce.

RE: Photographing RC planes.
As far as I'm concerned, lenses are never overkill.... It's not just the IS that's an issue with better lenses, it's focal speed and accuracy. The L is not mandatory either. I've compared the sigma offering to my L on a 1ds MkIII(not mine) in a tet bed situation, and found very minimalistic differences. As far as IS being useful: what are you doing that it improves a shot that is not already motion blurred? Hand holding down into the 1/100th shutter range is fairly simple, and below that blurr becomes an issue from simple motion. I've just never been in a situation, save one wedding in particular, where IS did anything for me, and that was a still shot of a bride and groom indoors. It did allow me to close the lens down a bit, and compensated for my flash dying as I snapped it, but they where stock still. I just don't find it useful in any sports activities, especially in a poorly lit stadium or rodeo arena, where the large element and lower aperture come in so handy. It's also very easy to drop a 1.4 or 2.0 tele onto a 70-200 and get a nice ~300-400 f4 or f5.6 lens. In honesty, if I was the OP, I would never have bought the 50d. The 30 is well MORE than capable of what he's doing. I shot for nearly two years with a rebel with this L hanging off the front, and took some truly good quality(we wont talk composition.....purely a equipment discussion LOL) shots with it. The MkII simply fell into what I needed from a speed and performance standpoint. I come from an old school of photography where a body was simply needed to be capable of the minimum of what you needed, everything else is LENS. Equipment is about 10% of the shot, the other 90% is the shooter.

RE: Photographing RC planes.
If y'all have never shot with a real telephoto, Ie: something with a high speed fixed barrel focal at 2.8 or better, you'll die the first time you do. I shoot with a 1d MkII(it's not about the MP for me, that sensor is plenty dense enough) and a 70-200 2.8L With the slower focus lenses, learn the lag on your AI servo and learn to track. If you can get a hand held shot of a swallow or scissor tail in flight with a kit lens, you've learned in flight tracking correctly(I've done it one time, it's still the coolest in flight shot I've ever done, and was with a rebel XT and a 18-55 kit lens....) I will say this as well.......don't buy into this "shoot it 2/3 of a stop under exposed and adjust the .Raw later". I will also offer a thought from someone who used to sell cameras(me) on IS. IS is a cool thing to have on a lens, but remember: ONLY aperture will stop motion blur. IS will only stop your hand shaking, and by the time your shutter speed has dropped low enough your hand effects it, a moving subject is blurred. If it's the difference between a 2.8 non-is lens, and a slower f4 or variable 4-5.6 IS lens, take the 2.8 EVERY time.

RE: Second trainer in the hanger!
I LOVED my hobbistar .60 with a ST .75 on it. It flew nails on, and that motor fired the first hit everytime(for a cheapo motor I was happy.) it's such a good floater, it'll fly with a hot .46 as well. I knocked the vertical off it twice in dumb thumb ground "incidents", and I lost her in a high speed outside loop(the vert snapped again). Great flying plane, just be sure you seal the covering or you WILL have peeling issues. I used a du-bro .60 sized nylon gear for mine. I dropped a ply block in front of and just behind the front former in the nose. Be aware you'll have to go that far forward or she'll be nose heavy on the wheels.

RE: 3 possibilities for next kit build.
The four-stars are a winner any direction you go, but might I recommend the 60 instead of the 40? Throw a .75st(as a budget motor) on one and it will be a beautiful plane that would fly perfect built to the drawings.
