According to your argument, NASCAR is a "BAD IDEA" Air Shows are a "BAD IDEA" Breaking the speed of sound was a "BAD IDEA", Cliff Diving is a "BAD IDEA", Alligator wrestling is a "BAD IDEA", well okay maybe Alligator wrestling IS a bad idea[:)] My point is when you're judging any pushing the envelope event, after the fact, because of one specific mistake which was only a mistake because this time he didn't pull it off, you are being inherently unfair to the performer. David S
Pushing the envelope is ok. But you should realise when you have pushed to far (as Ali does) and learn to push just a little less next time. That's what pushing the envelope is about. There's no use in exploring your boundaries if you're gonna forget them every time again.

RE: Some of the best
ORIGINAL: Ali I think what the Pampa incident shows more than anything is that the only thing we can expect when it comes to something going wrong in any flight, no matter who its made by is the unexpected, and that maybe pushing the boundaries as far as I did is not big and its not clever [;)], and as shown can, and will bite you in the A$$ somewhere along the line. Regards Al
And that is the important lesson to be learned here I think. The risk is indeed always there, and that's also what, at least partly, attracts the crowd (the crowd applauded when the jet went over their heads). It's up to us however to minimise that risk. As someone who was actually there (and not just saw the video) I can say that, in my opinion, the pampa organisation did everything possible to make the event as safe as possible. Spectators were standing at least 30-40m away from the flightline with a 2m+ high fence and the pit area in between. Passing the safetyline in the middle of the field was immediately reacted upon by the flight directors. I can also say that ali flew a great show, except for this mistake. I don't blame Ali for it. Mistakes happen, we're all human. He apologised, apology accepted. I DO blame those who refuse to learn from this and dismiss it as 'part of the game' or those who simply deny it and pretend there was no problem at all. Yes it was indeed a great safe, but it shouldn't have been necessary in the first place. I hope to see him perform his various manoeuvres again next year, especially the landings without final approach (turn in, gear out, land at end of turn). Ali's the only one I ever saw doing that and those are the moments when I think "wow, what a great pilot". Not when his jet is flying out of control 2m over my head. And for the record, an altitude of 1m is more then low enough for me. Planes were made to fly, if you wanna hunt worms, go fishing :-).

Thanks to Christous, Nico and all of the dutch guys that were so kind and friendly with there delicious BBQ on Saturday night. I cant wait till we can do it all over again at Jets over Cyprus. Congrats also on winning the challange thropy for the 3rd time in a row !!! That's a great tip Harley and exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for ! Thx !! Ebroens, also a nice suggestion, but I've tried that already in mexico :-) A successful holiday for us is one where we have a balanced mix of both our interests, not where one puts himself aside for the other. My wife's niece is also comming along for the first 2 weeks (couldn't get off from work longer), so in the unlikely event that the planes get too much for the girls, they 'll do something else together while I'm feeling tom cruise :-) Freedom of choise ! :-) Planes will only be a few days in the whole holiday anyway. But you did remind me that it's been a few months again since I've brought home some surprise flowers after work ;-)

What to see in florida concerning jets ?
Hi all, I'm from Belgium and last year I made the mistake of blindly following my wife on holiday to california, visiting all national parks and stuff, only to discover afterwards that there's also plenty of jets to see in california (Nellis airbase, Miranmar naval airbase, museum with F20 on display in LA, etc...) This summer (june 21st - july 10th) we're going on a vacation to Florida and I'm not making the same mistake again. Since I succeeded in getting some jet related stuff onto the schedule, I wanted to ask what's worth seeing in Florida regarding military jets. I have already found the naval aviation museum in pensacola, which certainly seems to be worth a visit, having tomcat f14's on display (my all time favorite jet) and being home of the blue angels. Probably kennedy space centre will also be on the list of things to visit, since I've been working until recently as a groundcontroller, supporting experiments on board the ISS and the launch of the european spacelab columbus. Are there any other jet /space related things that I MUST see when visiting Florida ? Any model airshows between 21/6 and 10/7 ?

RE: Fuel system plumbing and air trap consideration
Olnico, thanks for your confirmation of the experiment and my theory, but most of all thanks for this thread which will hopefully save a lot of planes from the dreaded 'pfiew' and white smoke :-) I have meanwhile replaced the filt cluck with a large bore open one, enlarged the pipe inside the tank to 4mm ID, put the 2 small tanks in parallel instead of in series and gave them each their own 4mm ID feedline to the maintank. These measures have brought max pump voltage from 4.25V to 3.90V and during testing I get no forming of bubbles upto a pumpvoltage of 5V. Furthermore my maintank now no longer collapses when the small tanks are still full and giving full throttle. Collapsing of the UAT is also noticably less, and the collapsing is an indication of the strength of the vacuum. Still should replace the 4mm ball valve in the suction line by a 6mm one or get rid of the valve all together I've read somewhere that kero can dissolve upto about 10% of air When the weather permits, the real test will come : a full throttle vertical climbout.

RE: T22 Warrior (Christen Diffusion)
Found out that the PST airtrap is way to expensive to ship to Belgium, so I continued investigation. When I attached a 1m long suction line of 4mm ID to the hopper and then directly into the fuel can, I got no bubbles anymore, so it must be that my suction lines are too restrictive. I have made an open clunck to replace the felt clunck inthere now, and also made some larger ID copper tubing. I hope that will do the trick and I'll be free of bubbles :-) BTW the bubbles seem to come from air that's dissolved in the kero and that comes out when pressure drops (like when popping a can of soda or like with caisson's disease by divers) You can test it by filling a veterinary syringe halfway with kero, blocking the needle and then sucking the syringe vacuum. Watch the kero foam and boil :-) Here are some more pictures of one of my lesser landings with the T22. It was a little bumpy, and you can see the wheels (trailing llegs) totally dissapearing in the grass on touchdown, and then the plane jumps back up.

RE: Air bubbles in line when defueling
Kerosine can contain up to 10% of dissolved air. When pressure drops suddenly (like when sucking fuel out hard) this air will come out of the fuel, just like CO2 out of a can of soda. Take a veterinary serynge and fill it halfway with kero. Block the intake and suck it vaccuum. Watch the kero foam and sparkle. It's also similar to caisson's desease with divers : under high water pressure, nitrogen dissolves in the blood. When surfacing, pressure drops quickly and the nitrogen comes out of the blood, making it foam in your vains.

RE: Fuel system plumbing and air trap consideration
Hi all, I have also been struggling with bubbles in the fuel with my P160 in my T22 warrior. Probably the cause of my 5 flame outs so far, of which the second one did quite a bit of damage to the plane (repaired). The 2 last flame outs both occurred while going vertical full throttle. I am also using the BVM UAT. I have a felt clunck in the main tank (2l), brass pickup tubes in the 2 side tanks (0.4l each) which are put in series. 6mm tygon tube until the UAT, then 4mm to the pump and turbine. 4mm ball valve in the suction line and fuelfilter and fuelvalve between pump and turbine. So in all quite a restrictive fuelsystem. BUT it used to work for the 25 first flights. On the video you can even see a full throttle vertical without problems, while these days 2 consequative attempts on vertical have both resulted in flame out. My guess is that the felt clunk has clogged a bit and with the cold temperatures, fuel is thicker and the P160 consumes more. Observations : After a flight there would be air in the UAT, even if the main tank was still far from empty. Full throttle the UAT would collapse a bit, not until the sides touched the sac, but still quite noticable. No kero leaks could be observed. After standing on its tail for a week (UAT in upright position), there would always be an airbubble in the line to the pump. Even when the UAT was made completely airfree, after a week there would be an airbubble in the line and in the UAT. I changed piping to 6mm tygon all the way to the pump and got rid of 20cm pipe between pump and turbine. I replaced tie-wrap safeties with wire safeties. Got rid of a festo connector in the push line. No avail. Further obervations : When refueling there would be no bubbles forming in the UAT. When reversing the refuel pump and drawing the fuel back through the UAT, the UAT would collapse and bubbles would form. Same when running the fuel pump in test mode at 4.00V. UAT collapse and bubbles forming in UAT. Bubbles regulary also reaching fuelpump (audible but not visible) Replaced UAT with an identical one from a friend : no avail. Then I thought of an interesting experiment : I filled a verterinary syringe (without needle) half with kero, got the air out, put my finger on the top and sucked it vacuum. Result : the kero starts sparkling and foaming like a fresh pint of beer !! So it's clearly the vacuum that gets you. My guess as an engineer is that this is not actually cavitation (vapourbubbles should then collapse when pressure is normal again, which they don't) but it is air that's dissolved into the kero and that comes out under vacuum. Much like caisson's disease with divers (nitrogen dissolves in the blood at high pressure and forms bubbles when pressure drops rapidly) or with beer or coca cola (CO2 is dissolved in the coca cola or beer to make it sparkle when pressure drops). Ofcourse air gets plenty of opportunity to dissolve in the kero when we shake the can to mix our oil. This would also explain why I get a bubble in the line and UAT after a week. When standing on its tail, the main tank is well below the UAT, so the weight of the fluid in the line places the UAT under slight vacuum. Air slowly dissolves in the UAT, but also in the sac inside the UAT. The air that dissolves inside the sac goes up and collects in the line to the pump. Air ouside the sac collects in the UAT. This also explains why regulary the bubbles in the UAT reach the pump. Those outside the sac stay in the UAT, but those forming inside the sac go straight to the turbine and cause a flame out when they've combined into a big enough bubble (my filter does an excellent job at combining the small bubbles). In all pretty much the same story as olnico, exept that I think it's dissolved air instead of vapour bubbles from cavitation. Now how to solve it ? I see 2 possibilities : 1) Make sure there is little or no vacuum (big bore and short feed lines) so no air dissolves, but this ain't always easy. 2) Make sure dissolved air can't reach the tubine. (a central pickup with no sac may do better here then a UAT) The PST airtrap may score well on the second solution. It has no sac that will capture and collect bubbles forming inside it and send them to the turbine. Where can I order such an airtrap ? Discussions on my theory and confirmation of the syringe experiment are welcome !

RE: T22 Warrior (Christen Diffusion)
Did some work on the fuel plumbing to make it less restrictive. Replace 70cm of 4mm line with 50cm of 6mm line in the suction part. Also opened my BVM UAT to check the sock, but it's still intact. I can still see air come into the UAT though when pumping the tanks empty at 4.5V pump voltage. Have found the thread on fuel plumbing and the PST airtrap and it seems that for a P160 or heavier engine this happens more with BVM UAT's. Thinking about getting a PST airtrap instead. Also have some eagltree graphs of the 2 flame out flights. Might be interesting to share, as I also have pump current logged :-) Would very much like to also log EGT and RPM of the turbine, but then I'll have to hack the ecu I think. May try that in the future.
