misterbill' Makes sense to me. How did you flatten the dowels, by sanding, planing or some other way? You're doing great work here. Russ

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 scale Fokker DVII from plans
Thanks Anthony, I was just curious as to the material. I needed strut material for a WW1 biplane model I was building and had a lot of Swamp Cypress on hand for a small sailboat I built. I did some research, and found it to be classed similar to the properties of Sitka Spruce. I still have some on hand if anyone would want to try it. I can mill it down to about 1/8" thickness. Russ
ORIGINAL: WacoNut On another note I have found my next build. It will be from plans and it is a WWI plane. See if someone can figure out what it is. It will be 1/6 scale and will have a span of 200". Hey Anthony, Sounds like it may be a Handly Page. Russ

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 scale Fokker DVII from plans
ORIGINAL: WacoNut I brought home some metal screen for the radiator and the mesh is too large. I will have to swing by the hardware store this week and see what I can find. Just don't have the desire to work on the plane much right now. Anthony, I have some fine mesh screen that I was going to use on a project that I never got started. I'll send it to you if you want it. Russ

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the corrugations on the rear face of the fuel tank? The firewall is between the tank and the engine. Russ

RE: Balsa USA Fokker DR1 1/4 scale
WacoNut, This is the same covering system I used on my Challenger UL shown in my avatar. The plane has a ridgid aircraft grade aluminum tubing framework and when doing the final shrink with the iron you could hear the frame creaking and groaning. it's no surprize to me that this fabric would distort a balsa framework. The offset would also seem to reduce piston and cylinder wear. Do you suppose this is why they were designed that way? Russ

RE: CD ScaleDesigns Albatros CI build
ORIGINAL: CTDavies Don, I have the huge Jane's Fighting Aircraft of World War 1 which is basically a reprint of several Flight articles, which also has a lot on the Benz 230 HP Engine including scale (dimensioned!) drawings. I'm not sure if this is the one you're looking at, but at a quick glance it seems to be the same. The cylinders were certainly NOT offset. I have a big presentation this afternoon, so can't scan the drawings for you right now, maybe later this eveninig. Chris
Now I'm really confused! The info Flying Fox forwarded have me convinced the engines have cylinders offset towards the cam shaft to the amount of 10mm as dimensioned on one of the drawings. This certainly seems deliberate and not an artifact of some reproduction process. Russ
