RE: Iroquois pilots... show me your ships!
Hi Jgunpilot... Good point, and thanks for that. I have known them as Iroquois or Hueys ever since I was a kid. Even if thats wrong, I'm hoping curiosity will draw posters in this thread as I cant change it now. Thanks a lot for your pictures... Goose

Hey Skillet... Yeah me too, which is why I'm putting so much time into it [:D] How much of your G20 stuck out of the cowl? Got a pic? I have CJ's too, love them, the original units went from the box to the bin with the foam still on them *lol* Cheers! RE: Goose's H9 F4U Corsair ARF bash
Hey MiMoore... Good to see your still working on the SF260. Hmmm I will have a look at that, cheers.... [edit] The RCV looks like a good solution, it will certainly fit in the large cowl, is geared and will swing a large 3 blader. On the down side it is still glow powered ($) and is known to produce significant oil from the breather. Slime is one of the reasons I am looking for a suitable gasser. Nonetheless I will keep the RCV on the list. Cheers! Goose

RE: Goose's H9 F4U Corsair ARF bash
Gidday Tim... Thanks, glad your enjoying it. Performing due diligence on your airframe will pay off. I'm sure you have heard of or seen the various threads around stating that someones Corsair shed a wing in flight, its weak, bad design etc etc but further analysis reveals they have put some huge engine in it and flown it like a pylon racer. Common sense. Fix all the stuff you can see that is broken. Add blocks to the firewall and if you are installing an engine at the big end of the range, glass the firewall in. I'm not too concerned about the cracks in the wing skin at the gull as they are minor, but once again, I did patch them up. The gulls are a concern for me and the reason is simple. The landing gear bays are at a critical place and have removed a lot of structure (even before my mods). My gear require slots cut into the wing joiner further weakening it. The LE is almost cut through for the oil coolers and is in serious need of reinforcement. Make it strong, keep it light and fly it like its supposed to be flown. I will be adding details of these mods later, keep an eye out. Cheers! Goose

RE: Goose's H9 F4U Corsair ARF bash
Ha! Knew you would be the first to ask mate, given the added weight and wanting to swing a 3 blader, I'm currently looking at the side induction 20cc [link=http://www.zrcgf.com/store/Details.cfm?ProdID=26&category=0]Aerovate...[/link] It looks like it will fit except for the plug cap which I kinda expected. You can see the profile of the fuselage behind the engine drawing, and the cowl is an additional 7.5mm all around so the carb will just fit. Don't trust the drawing much, its a single point perspective and had to be scaled by different amounts in X & Y to match the dimensions. Anyone got a better drawing? Depth wise it fits and the stand offs will be quite short. I am planning to modify the exhaust to route them through the scale position too. What do you think? Goose PS: The fuse is upside down in the picture.

RE: Goose's H9 F4U Corsair ARF bash
This week has been aptly named tailwheel week as thats all I have worked on. It has come together well and per design, fitting nicely into what little space there is in the rear of the Corsair. It weighs 107g including the 2" air cylinder (Sierra) and solid rubber tailwheel (read heavy). I'm not too concerned about the weight, although I think it is comparible with the Robart 160, because of the powerplant that I am thinking of using. Pic 1: Not finished but freshly assembled in the down and locked position. Pic 2: In the retracted position. Pic 3: Extended position in the fuselage, all looks good per the drawings & photos. Pic 4: Retracted. Note the doors are missing. I didn't get anything done today, sick in bed, but I did make a little video last night [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlOEFtDUrxI]here...[/link] Cheers Goose

RE: Goose's H9 F4U Corsair ARF bash
So this weeks update contains lots of time spent for what seems like little gain. Thats how scale stuff goes I suppose. [;)] Pic 1: I added all the scale details that will show through the covering onto the rudder and gave it an airfoil. Pic 2: I covered it and added the stitching, trim tab pushrod and shroud, inspection hatch etc. Pic 3: I removed the floor and spent lots of time getting the cockpit parts to fit with lots of chopping. Pic 4: I split the canopy open and Flite Metaled the frames. Liquid masking film is added before paint. Pic 5: Spent lots of time cutting instrument holes, adding rivets, knobs etc... Pic 6: Sanded the stabilizer to add an airfoil and sheeted it. Looks ok, but presents some construction issues. Thanks for watching [:D] Goose

RE: Goose's H9 F4U Corsair ARF bash
I hear ya bud. Colour scheme will be F4U-1D NZ5440 (Bu. No. 50459) Lil Audrey flown by 24 squadron, Royal New Zealand Air Force. I believe it was flown from September 1944 to 1945 in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Torokina, Nissan Island and Jacquinot bay. She survived the war only to be melted down for scrap in 1948 along with most of her brothers. Information is rare and the NZ connection makes it all the more appealing to me. My pilot is a Hangar 9 latex job, pulled from the wreck of the first plane and I will have to build a body for it, not sure yet how I'm going to do that, probably with white/blue foam. Cheers Goose

RE: Another Top Flite Giant P51-D rolls onto the production line
Hi guys... Anyone still watching? Projects run hot and cold for me, whether its time, money, enthusiasm or whatever... but the Mustang is back in the queue (albeit 2 years later [8|] ) I have four projects for winter, so don't hold your breath on this... weekly updates in effect. This week... [ul] [*] I spent some time looking at the build to date and re-establishing where I am at. [*] I changed my mind on a couple of things including going back to air for the retracts and doors instead of the Lado solution (due to cost). [*] I was reminded how much a pain in the butt the turtle deck is and will have to spend some time figuring that out. [*] Colour scheme will be P51-D 44-13573 Isobel III flown by Flt. Lt. Jack Cleland (RNZAF) as he was the only NZ pilot to fly the Mustang in combat with the 363rd FS, 357th FG. [*] Given that this scheme is entirely painted, I will be doing panels the old way versus Flitemetal but will use FM where appropriate. ANYWAYS... I spent quite a bit of time in the shop this weekend: Pic 1: I glassed the flaps and ailerons with .75oz cloth and West system epoxy Pic 2: Two high build filler sprays and lots of sanding finishing with green Squadron putty and a wet sand (total weight gain for all glassed parts 11g) Pic 3: Stripped the fuselage of covering Pic 4: Started cutting out the cockpit parts (Top Flite .60 sized kit)

RE: Goose's TWM 27% Ultimate assembly
Hi Hegetus... Thanks for all that, great stuff. I was very close to trashing this plane after the second crash on flight 4. I could not slow it down to land at all and at 1/3rd throttle it fell out of the sky ripping off the landing gear and breaking the bottom wing tube assembly. The C of G is wildly out and I removed 16oz of lead, totally ignoring the manufacturers recommendation and just flew it. Guess what... it flew great! I moved the main battery pack back even further and now have it flying exactly as I want. The landing gear plate assembly is very weak and after repairing it twice, even the greasiest landings would result in failure. I built an aluminium bracket with angles to support the gear and bolted it between F1 and F2... it has been rock solid since. I have put 4 gallons of gas through the plane this season and have loved it. Plenty of power with the DL50, super good fun with smoke on (Sullivan) and progressed my flying ability substantially. I did suffer a dead stick (first time ever with this setup) due to the cold weather I think that resulted in damage. Takeoff, vertical climb, 100' and it quit. It doesnt glide at all so after the tailslide, I dove it at the ground and attempted a flair. Not too bad, will have it ready for next season. All in all I am very happy with the final product, but it did take a lot of work to turn it into something that flew well and was fun to fly. Such is life with cheap planes. Hi Dias... Thanks for that. I had seen this and unfortunately the 10mm OD Carbon tube I'm after only comes in 60" lengths. My mast is around 1825mm (~72") long so a splice or ferrule is needed. Cheers Goose

Cool, thanks... Given the length of the mast, I am thinking about a two-piece arrangement. What do you guys think about a metal sleeve over one end and the ferrule epoxied into the other piece as a solution? Is there a better/easier way to do it? Cheers Goose

RE: Goose's TWM 27% Ultimate assembly
So... I got it all fixed up for the weekend and Scott flew it. He expertly managed to fly it and get it down in one piece albeit with the following comments: It is a lot nose heavy. It is very roll sensitive. It destabilizes quickly (roll) when slowing down. It doesn't like to slow down. Most of this is explained by the nose heavy condition, and the roll sensitivity by my servo horns being long and long on the ailerons. The next plan was for me to fly it and Scott to land it. I would call the flight successful in that it flies pretty well, doing basic manouvers, rolls, stall turns, tail slide etc... I began investigating landing approaches and setup perhaps 4 or 5 with a go-around each time. On the last one, I experienced the same thing as last time i dorked it and was powering up and feeding in elevator when it pancaked in on the end of the runway. I calmly checked my sticks and was at 1/2 throttle and near full up elevator when it went in. Others confirmed the attitude didn't change, it didn't stall, and I wasn't in a harrier condition... in fact I don't think i could get it into that stalled condition easily at all. End result, splayed and ripped the gear out, broke another prop, bent an exhaust and general damage to the underside. I'm running out of patience and money for this plane and have resigned it to being an experiment. I will fix it up and some stage and put it on a serious diet by taking all the unecessary stuff out of it to get the wing loading down. It is the same weight/wing area as the Wildhare Ultimate which is discontinued... same reasons? The wing loading works out to be 29.6oz per square foot and is 3.25lbs heavier than the manual states for the heavy end of the scale. I will strip it down as far as it will go and fly it to see what happens and perhaps mend my bruised ego. In the meantime I found a replacement for my dorked Fliton Edge that will get me through summer. Cheers Goose

RE: Goose's TWM 27% Ultimate assembly
Hi Flamin'... Yes I was using the incidence meter on the bottom wing as my zero reference and perhaps thats where things are going astray... It makes sence (in my head anyways *lol) that if I set everything up relative to the bottom wing, which is assumed to be 'zero' that I will have a nice straight flying plane. It is worth noting that the stagger (fore and aft) between top and bottom wings does not allow the loop around the wings to touch the LE of the top wing and TE of the lower. I'm not sure what difference that makes but I may have to make the loops much bigger and try that. Anyways, appreciate your input. Cheers Goose
