RE: BALSA USA 1/3 SOPWITH PUP?????
Question to all you 1/3 scale pup owners: How do i connect the aerolons. Do I install two servos on both sides of the lower wing near aerolon horn and get an extention cable to run to reciever? Is it that simple. Do long extension servo cables cause radio interference?

RE: OHIO DAWN PATROL 2012
I'm building a 1/3 busa nieuport17 and was curious how the one in this dawn patrol event crashed. Is this plane not stable in the wind or under powered?

RE: WW1 planes with rudder mix
I would not mix. When taking off or landing you need to steer with rudder and keep the plane level. Ive flown two DR1's (GTM,powerlinehobbies dr1) and all need rudder to turn. I usually feed first aileron then rudder to keep tail from dipping and she swings around. If you get good at this you can turn a dr1 flat with out banking by applying slight opposite aileron then opposite full rudder as shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg8Wa1fMfQE

RE: New Updates! 1:1 scale Sopwith Pup and Fokker Triplane builds
It’s coincidental that we are building the same planes. I only build 1/3 scale but I it makes me furious how fast you can build a full-scale replica and maiden way before I could. I have to ask if you were to come across a rotary could you install it with minimal effort?

RE: BALSA USA 1/3 SOPWITH PUP?????
Bond joints are good in shear and bad in peel. A lap shear joint would not be good design for this gear application. So yes your right you want to insert aluminum fittings inside the strut tubes and fill with JB weld to stabalize and provide good tension compression strength. In my case I slotted the strut with a saw and press fit in shaped aluminum plate for bending strength. Its not too hard if your good wifth a file. This gear is strong trust me.

RE: BALSA USA 1/3 SOPWITH PUP?????
My balsa usa 1/3 pup needed a landing gear overhaul. I chose to buy aluminum struts from GTM models and JB weld them together. I can’t weld or braze anyway and this method works just a good and is a lot less messy. I used piano wire routed in wood as shown. Nails were used to hold bungee cord around axial. Believe me this setup works great form past expense with my 38lb GTM dr1which I stalled at five feet and came crashing down on the gear with no damage.

RE: WW1 Fighters
The fokker streaking technique requires lots of paint remover because your never happy with the first results and its trial and error. Basically paint a base coat color whether it be gray or light blue and use latex. The trick is to use a wide two inch brush and take sharp scissors cutting the brush fibers at the tip off to reduce coverage and create streak lines. That’s the easy part…next use olive green or light brown and water it down. Take brush and stoke always in one direction and move down. The color should fade showing dark and light streaking. Once you get the hang of it its easy. Some of my hanger queens. 1/4 scale scratch Sopwith camel and powerline hobbies 1/5 scale dr1 using solartex and this streaking effect.

RE: DH 2
The twisty wings should stiffen up when you have the wing wires attached from the inner struts to outer wing struts. Most if not all english and french planes required bracing wires to keep wings from twisting and braking off. Fokker came up with a box center spar construction that prevented twist and the need for bracing wires.

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
Your video was a pleasure to watch. Just goes to show how well engineered this kit really is. Fly’s like full scale minus the rotary engine torque effects and looks great. I’ve have had many dr1 kits that extend the firewall or cowl out and use an oversized rudder. You know in the past many people say the more scale the more difficult to fly. Well this kit proves that all wrong. FYI I told you about the longer the run out on landing the more prone to ground tip. If I had a grass field like yours I would be flying every day. A good strong head winds helps landing. One other thing. If you go dead stick you better have altitude because the glide ratio of this plane is like a piano.

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
Glad to here all went well. Its fun to give advice here when you have the same model. I haven't flown mine in over 6 months because I keep thinking I should upgrade to the new life a123 batteries. NIMH batteries shelf life is not too good for my lack of flying. I wish we had a nice grass field here in colorado instead of a wide paved runway. Its really an easy plane to land in grass but almost impossible on the pavement due to long uncontrolled roll outs ending up into a ground loop and scraping up the lower wings. Hope you make a video would love to see her in the air. I happen to see the maiden flight of the 1/3 busa dr1 in this forum and was not impressed at all looked sluggish.

RE: Best Warbird Batteries?
Thinking about going to LIFE or A123 batteries for reciever. For those who use these batteries can you answer these questions: 1) If the cells discharge below a certain voltage do you get reverse poloarity and the cell is damaged? 2)I know you need to balance when charging but do you cycle (discharge then charge) the batteries? 3)My warbird only flys a dozen or more times a year. Does this battery need to be charged every month to keep from discharging to avoid damaging the cells? 4) I understand A123 batteries are hard to get and use patented nano technology. Ok to go with another brand? 5) Most important I run a DA 100 can the electrical ignition take the extra volts with out regulator?

Thanks for all you comments. Believe it or not it helps me want to finish the build. I've decided not to modify the wings and keep as is. The only remaining problem with the build is CG, top/bot wing and elevator incidence. I don't have the busa 1/3 pup plans so I'm clue-less?

RE: Sopwith Pup wing rib thickness advice
TK I remember seeing your Pup at Rhinebeck sometime in the early 90's when I was in NJ. I also remember you had a proctor albatros...silver with the dragon on the side. Yep yoiur Pup was certainly the best I've seen even to this day. Ok some pics of some of the mods I made already. Still on the fence about the wings.

RE: Siemens-Schuckert D.III 1/3 Scale
Great job. I know what it takes to scratch build. Its not only being artistic and having extreme patience but good engineering that makes your creation stand out from the ordinary. Maybe after getting comfortable with her in flight you might think of a four bladed prop. That may need a geared system maybe not.

Gas line tubing in Tank getting stiff
I was told the gasoline tends to make the tubing stiff over time. This could cause the plunk in the tank not to move and starve the engine in flight. Does anyone know of a tubing that does not harden over time and needs not replaced every year. The tubing I use right now is yellowish clear...thats all I know.

RE: Sopwith Pup wing rib thickness advice
Well the cord is right. The ribs are 3/4 too thick. Ok I'm going to blow off some steam here. I did not pay the full price for this kit and got and unbelievable bargain for it's already framed up and only cost me 85 dollars. But after building a GTM kit I find this kit to be a piece of shit. I have to literally take it all apart to get it close to scale. Should of just started a scratch build and just bought the balsa usa cowl.

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
One other thing Craig, Before I maidened mine I spoke with vertical grimace and he adviced me to get more positive incidence on the elevator. I put a few washers on the two front elevator mounting scews to prop up the elevator to give an additional 1 deg positive incidence. I'm glad i did that becouse I still had to trim down elevator when flying. Also I had 2.5 degree right thrust and 2.5 degree down thrust on the engine. 35 lbs sounds like alot of weight but there is so much wing area you'll be flying probably a little above half throttle with G62. Mine flys at a quarter throttle with da 100. Just forget about the wieght believe me.

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
If your GTM dr1 flys like mine then: Gradually add throttle with elevator in neutral position. Once tail comes up the torque will swing her slightly left. Correct with right rudder and slowly feed in up elevator not too fast because this bird wants to jump into the air. Once airborne turn with rudder and aileron. I personally don’t like to mix them. I had other people fly her and they all say how well and realist she fly’s. Stalls are gradual at very low speeds so pretty stable up there. The landing approach is the hard part. If you plan to flare out early and touch down on skid and gear you will lose directional control almost immediately. I like to come in slightly nose down and flare out just before wheels touch. Land on the main gear with tail up then cut throttle with full up elevator and grind that skid into the ground to slow down. Pray your wing skids don’t get bent.

Sopwith Pup wing rib thickness advice
I inherited a 1/3 balsa usa sopwith pup all framed up. I don’t think this model is scale at all. I completely modified fuse and gear but the wing ribs look way too thick. I can’t find any documentation on wing rib dimensions to be proven wrong. Was wondering if anyone in this modeling community could point me to the correct wing rib dimensions.
