Cox .049 Reeds.
Stainless steel, mylar or teflon? I have tried them all over the years and they all seem to achieve the same end result for my sport engines. Maybe one type is less likely to gum shut than others? What type do you favour? I'm going through my Cox engines and doing some rebuilding, checking rod slop, new gaskets and reeds etc., general fettling.

Looks like I may have to build another Dakota and r/c-a- fye it. I refuse to defile my current i.c. F/F Dakota. I see Dave Fritzke has the slightly bigger Osprey r/c version plan of the Dak on his site. Thanks Dave. Looks the goods, now where did I put that balsa?

Dakota Bipe.
Not R/C , but, definitely 1/2A and better still, i/c powered. After purchasing the kit late in 2010, my Dakota finally flew a couple of days ago. Testors/ McCoy .049 engine with after market head and OS A3 plug. I'm using 10% nitro, 20% castor and a Cox 6x3 prop. This all seems ideal, with just the right amount of power and climb for the little Dakota. What a terrific fun flier, thanks to Joe Wagner for the design and BMJR for marketing the kit.

RE: Gilbert .11 - equivalent engine?
Here's a Gilbert powered Keil Kraft Phantom . Black Hawk Models market a kit these days or plenty of free plans on the net if you want to scratch build one. Non aerobatic trainer ( I did manage to loop my P.A.W.1.5 diesel powered version ), cutie and all around fun flier. All sheet construction builds fast. I've never owned a Gilbert engine, so I can't comment on it's power output..

RE: im new here just flew my first CL in 30 years!
Nice looking plane you've got there Gus, well done. C/L is all about having fun and sounds like you had plenty of that. It's true, bigger planes with a built up wing are a lot easier to get off the ground, to fly and also to land. They will glide pretty well if you've got the CofG correctly located, as per the plan. When you've got the current model under control you could move up to something like the inexpensive and easy building SIG Akromaster on 50' lines and a .15 up front. You won't believe how great it flies for not too many dollars.

Why not talk to Scott Reise if he built the engine. You can PM him on Stuka Stunt forum. I run my C/L OS engines on 10% nito, 20% castor 70% methanol. They also like the hot A3 glow plug. Just how I do it, Scott may disagree.

RE: Building Roy Clough Sheet Metal Susie....engine?
The model sure looks very different from the balsa planes we're more used to seeing. I'll admit to being a fan of Roy's designs, I built and flew his .049 powerd C/L autogyro in early 1960's. It flew very well and amazed us all. We'd all like to see some photos of your build............John.

RE: LST trainer
Nice looking model in the pictures. Put a Cox .049 in your one. You might find good advice on one of the electric forums, this one is for IC powered models mainly. We're all worried about exploding lipo batteries, those new fangled electric things just aren't safe. Whenever I see mention of the LST I remember the late Mr. Lynn Sipes, he was fond of the design......John.
