RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Hi Barry I do apologize for may mistake I am the worlds worst person for getting names wrong it seems written language is no different!!!! Thank you for your reply I am happy to hear you have the same amount of ballist as me. I was beginning to think I was the odd one out many claim half the weight. My servos are in front of the cockpit but have a full cockpit and heavy pilot probably offset your rear servos. Cheers Chris

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire Assembly
Hi Roger Yes all control throws were as stated in the instructions and CofG at 153mm this was all good. I needed 2 kilos to ballance AUW 13.7 29.7 lbs (never could build light!) still flies fine though I have full cockpit and pilot I think this is the reason I need so much ballist. I have read other threads that quote similar weights I feel there maybe differences in layup in the tail etc.. I have done a similar thing as DB re the fire wall it is behind here that all the flight batteries and ignition are stored! I brought an extra canopy for VQ models that is of a much better grade and thicker plastic was good for the sliding conversion. My guns are turned out of a broom stick and are the single best thing and the worst thing at the same time look great but are continually in the way the price you pay to look cool!!!

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire Assembly
Roger We have a term at work for of someone stuffs up DUM ASS! It seem I have received it twice this week. I had a reply from Mr Goose he was shocked to hear he was meant to be in NZ it turns out I miss read your post so apologies when we hits you up about spreading false rumors !! Second although not so shocking it was the first photo from mine above that was in the calander it's a great idea to have in your work shop every month is an inspiration. I am still a little of a skeptic as to weather a G62 will fit my DLE55 was so tight that I had to alter the side exhaust so much to give clearance of course various other differences in the engines may make a difference. The G62 is an awesome motor so I hope it works for you! I flew my spit again in the weekend at a warbirds meet at our club all was not as smooth as hoped as my muffler came loose the lack of power and throttle response had me stretching the glide to make the field, the resulting stall from half a meter or so left one of my cannons stuck in the mud and as I discovered later a slightly tweaked undercarriage! Of course there was the usual heckles from the peanut gallery!!! No real damage done all fixed now, my pride took a bit of a hammer I was just thinking I was over all of this! Just have to work out what to do about the muffler! Regards Chris

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire Assembly
Hi Vasek Thanks for the complement on the photo we have a professional wedding photographer in our club who is turning his hand to rc plane photo it has taken a while for him to perfect the needs of this skill eg not freezing the prop etc. He feels now he has the formula and has now a high success rate this is of course good for us. He this year produced a calendar of club planes it was scooped up fast the second picture was in this! Roger I have sent a pm to Mr Goose hope we can catch up! I agree with your choice of motor and the reason I am unsure as to whether the side carb will clear the cowl without some sort of hole! I had to install 2kg of ballast it hurt to do so but still flies fine at 28.5 lbs horse power will always be a better option I wonder if 70cc will fit? I am glade my pictures have given you some inspiration I am looking foreword to following this thread. If I can help by supplying any photos of in stalls etc just ask! Regards Chris

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire Assembly
Hi Roger It would be good to catch up with your flight instructor if he was in Auckland. If you can get hold of him give him this number 021 2323 506 (Chris) maybe we can squeeze in some flying. This summer down here has sucked may of our club events have been washed out to the point we are wondering if it is worth trying next year!!! Having said that we have managed to get a few good club days. The Spitfire is back in the air after almost a year mostly due to overheating problems it is all good now and I am looking foreward to many more flights. I can give you a heads up on the gear mounts they have removed far too much material from the ribs and I was able too glue 12mm spruce either side of the rib to reinforce this area I think you will see what I mean. I fairness to ESM my first five flights ended in deadsticks due to the heating issues and some of the arrivials were less than ideal! I have remanufactured the gear supports with 7075 T6 ali as I found the original to be soft commercial grade ali and that my abuse of it was pulling it out of shape! I look foreward to meeting your friend if at all possible. Regards Chris

Roger I think your plane was built on one of the 360 days a year that the QA (quality assurance!) officer was away on holiday I did not have such an issue although two of my fuselarge formers were lose!! Remember you get what you pay for but you will end up with a fine model that flys great! Chris

RE: ESM Spitfire 72.5
Hi I am very pleased to hear of your maiden be careful it sounds like you are in danger of getting Spititus a desease common to Spitfire pilots it has no known cure suffers can expect to wake up and discover a garage full of Spitfires in no time at all. I have five now! I agree with all the recomendations on landings I prefer duel rates on the elevator for landing as lots of expo can get out of hand fast. Duel rates will only work of course if you remember to engauge them!! I also carry a little more speed and wheel it on three pointers are possible but push you very close to the stall which limits options should it all start going pear shaped! I wish you many happy flights the look of a Spitfire in the air is unique and a thing of beauty! Cheers Chris

And I bet that there will be plenty more! We have had two in as many weeks. Time heals most pain,if that doesn't work my friend Jim Beam may help ! Hope it works out for the better ! Regards Chris

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire rework
Ian You are of course right about getting air to the carb to this end after much soul searching I opened a hole hehind the carb throught the fire wall. I am still not sure if i did the right thing but it does not seem to have done any harm. My thinking was that the carb was sucking hot air or a worst operating in a low pressure area. I have also taken a vent from the back of the metering diaphram to inside the fuse to help the carb read true air pressure. My other thought is that my rather large muffler is shielding the escaping air. I have followed other threads and most have no trouble with overheating. Keep up the good work! Cheers Chris

RE: ESM Spitfire 72.5
Hi I have a little experience with pull-pull it is a good idea not to put your wire through the control horn at all. Dubro have a product that allows the use of a clevis with a short threaded section with a hole through it for the wire. This system allows easy cable tension adjustment and no wear on the cable at all!! I also raid the local fishing shop for plastic coated steel trace and swages you can buy this with very high breaking strain ratings. These systems need to be checked often for tension as temp can affect them a bit! Chris

RE: ESM 50cc Spitfire rework
Idigbo You work is awesome I have been following this thread with much excitment. My biggest issue with my model has been the cooling the first 4 flights resulting in deadsticks due to overheating I flew with no cowling and it was just great. I have managed to get it to keep it running with the cowl on but she still heats up a little too much. I have made more mods but yet to fly it again. I have had to open the front till I get a full view of the cylinder and baffle the sides to guide air through the engine. I have also opened the rear off the exhausts the allow a venturi effect, the exit I have opened up very large the model was last flowen with this configuation and ran the entire flight but was showing signs of sagging near the end. I have now added a 5mm lip to the leading edge of the exit hole this has made a huge difference to the cooling during ground running. The model has not flowen like this yet but I am confident that it is alot closer to a good out come. I have no current photos of the install but can be arranged if need be. Chris

Hi there Yes please count me in. This is my ESM Spitfire DLE 55 a VQ cockpit a dozen or so flights I just love it. A little over 28lbs 4.4lbs ballast still flys great. Oh and there is a H9 in the garage and a Hyperion electric and a GWS. It is like an illness!!! Chris

RE: YT (ESM) 50cc Spitfire
SP Hi yes if you made a hatch there I could see that working would need a bit of work though, you may even fit two maybe even three packs in the motor mount you need to keep it all as far forward as possible. I would love to see one fly as electric , best of luck this model flies well enough to warrant the effort. I look fordward to the build thread. Chris
