RE: Hangar Sadness
Derek, If you ever get into St. Louis, there is a free field at 141 and 44. Buder Park, it's owned by the St. Louis county parks and recreation department and as long as you're AMA it's free flying. AMA just for flying insurance purposes, there is a Buder flyers pilots license that residents really need to have, but you being in Rolla, I'm sure that getting into St. Louis will only be a couple of times, so it's not a problem. Let me know if you get into town, I'm going to fly more this year, one of my resolutions for 2009.

RE: Uproar no more
I used to routinely do full throttle touch and go's with my Uproar 40. Upgraded the landing gear mount to a 1/4 inch aircraft grade ply and the landing gear to a aluminum strap. The guys at the field used to call it the slap and go. Oddly enough, I lost the plane in a streamer combat when a fellow pilot flew through my left wing. Tore the outer part of the wing off in front of the aileron and I was able to keep the plane flat and float down to the ground. I might get another one. They're cheap and a lot of fun.

RE: Bi-plane as second plane?
I have been flying for around 5 years now and am completely self taught. Started with a SPAD BUHOR and quickly trashed it. Moved into slow electrics and from there my first Nitro model was an Uproar 40. I flew that thing to death. I was finally doing full speed touch and go's with it before I lost it in a combat flight. That was fun. As far as flying something to the ground goes, I have to admit that a touch and go at about 60 miles and hour is heart pounding. I don't have a bi plane yet, but am seriously considering and Ultimate. I have flown everything from slow electrics like the slow stick to the giant scale Cap 580 from Great planes. I'm still apprehensible about getting a biplane. Do yourself a favor and don't get the biplane as your second plane. You'll trash it. I'd really recommend the Uproar if you're looking for something forgiving but all out nuts later on. The Twist 3D is a good choice too. Just don't get the biplane. I've got a ModelTech 20 size Extra with a .Magnum .28 on it. It's a lot of fun to fly and it has a cowl. Handles really well as well and with the 48 inch wing span, it's pretty forgiving. Won't 3D for it's life, but'll do all the regular aerobatics depending on how you set up the CG.

RE: Whats 2.4Ghz all about?
Where to start? No you don't have to have 2.4 gHz, but, it seems that 2.4 gHz is going to stay. What you have is a new type of control transmission that uses 2.4 gHz instead of 72mHz. 2.4 gHz is higher in frequency and theoretically can transmit more information faster. What the down side is, is that it can take a lot of energy to get any kind of range. This has been compensated for, by both manufacturers, by the use of dual antennas that are opposite to, or at 90 degree angles to each other to make sure that the receiver can hold a "lock" on the transmitter. I still fly with 72mHz, but at some point I will probably switch to 2.4 gHz, mainly because the 2.h gig radios use dual channel technology that prevent s the possibility of turning on a radio and someone else being on the same frequency. Futaba's system, I believe can actually change channels during operation if one channel gets noisy. I'm not a 2.4 gig pro, but have a little radio experience being a HAM radio operator and all. :) So, if someone has more information, or I'm wrong somewhere, let me know. Welcome to R/C, lotsa fun here!!!

RE: GOING IT ALONE
I'm completely self taught. Get a slow stick, or two, and a simulator. Fly when ever you can and use your sim as a tool. It'll teach you orientation and get rid of your "dumb thumbs." If you have any questions, please PM me. I also can give you pictures of my home brew slow flyer that can be made really cheaply. I have attached the picture of the "foamy trainer" that I built and learned to fly with. Now, I instruct others in the joys of RC flight, I'm 27 by the way. Been flying since I was 23. 100% self taught. My first plane was a SPAD BUHOR. Big and slow, and I could not control it. Built my "foam trainer", flew it and never looked back. My next plane was a GWS EStarter. That plane taught me how to use ailerons, I feel that it makes a great second plane. I know you wanted GAS to start, but that's asking for stress.

My Extra, the one in my avatar pic, died in a full throttle impact with terra firma. Knife edge into some kind of tumble, not operator induced, and not a spurious hit, and then BOOMFFF, toothpicks. HA HA HA HA, all I could do was laugh, and say "That was COOL!."

RE: Does every Airplane meet it's demise by crashing ?
NAH, sometimes it's a midair. Especially if you're flying combat. That's how my Uproar 40 died. I was able to "land" it though. It was a spectacular impact. My opponent's plane disintegrated. BWA HA HA HA HA! My opponent flew through my wing, and tore it off in front of the aileron. I still had attitude control, and was able to keep the plane level and float it to the ground.

RE: How do I plumd this profile
Use zip ties to anchor your fuel tank. I would try to keep it as close to parallel to the engine as possible, then route your fuel lines over and under the fuselage using the shortest lines possible. This way you won't have any opportunity to have the fuel lines come in contact with the prop. As far as prop size goes, it depends on what you plan to do with this plane. Use the OS suggested prop size for sport flying. Probably the 12x7 for sport flying, maybe a 13x6 for 3D, but I'm not a 3D guy.

RE: Safe to fly in school yard?
Put a cannon on it and point it at the idiots worrying about the 'little ones." I'm tired of idiots telling me what I can and can't do. Same people who want to have fairness in radio, take your guns away, and not allow you to fly. If you are responsible, and it sounds like you are, keep flying safely and smartly and the "problems" will work themselves out. I like the idea about asking the police about ordinances, but don't invite trouble. Just my two cents from an fed up, bitter, angry 27 year old. Have fun.

Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF fluid Both will leave a fine film of oil on board that will be beneficial to the metal parts as well as the gaskets, then run the thing with a high oil content fuel, maybe a little rich, not too rich it'll never get warm, you should be fine.

Futaba has been doing 2.4 gHz in the industrial stuff for years now. That's also one of the reasons I like to fly Futaba, the industrial background. In my job I'm in and out of manufactring plants where they use R/C cranes, most of them are Futaba controlled. This has my curiosity as well, but being a Ham Radio Operator, I think my next radio really may be on 6 meters. But, hmm....

How many gallons of fuel can one buy for the price of some of those high discharge LiPo's? UGH, I'll stick with nitro and gas for now.

RE: Aerofly Pro questions
I've got the original version of AeroFly Pro, not the deluxe version. When I bought it, the connector cable was not USB but plugs into the RS-232 serial port on the back of your computer. There is an adpater available for the Futaba Square connection. I've got a T6EXA and a T4YF that both have the square connection, no problems with either. The physics are solid, I'm totally self taught with slow flying electrics and a WHOLE LOT OF TIME on AeroFly Pro. Don't expect photo realistic scenery or aircraft, it's not a gaming program. Look at it as a tool to help you learn the correct inputs to get your plane to do what you want it to. $57 is a bargain. If you're not looking to use the simulator as a toy, but as a tool than snatch it up. Otherwise, spend the higher amount and get the Deluxe version, or FS1, G3.5, or RealFlight. I still use my copy of AeroFly Pro. It has saved me thousands, and I use it as a tool, but it still has it's times when I use it as a toy.

RE: UPS SHIPPING WARNING ALL SHOULD READ!!!!
UPS stands for Underlings Play Soccer (with your package.) Anyway, I work in an industry where we rely on UPS to get or packages to our clients on time befroe they have to shut down due to a lack of parts. I routinely have boxes that are repackaged, busted open inside and out (boxes in boxes), or otherwise damaged. Luckily, most of the stuff that we ship are small parts like washers, nuts, bolts, and screws; But it all adds up. We have notes to our warehouse on our shipments to "Package for rough handling by UPS." (That's verbatim guys.) I feel this reflects that this is not just an isolated incident. Problem is, other than FedEx, and DHL, UPS has no other real form of competition. Just one curiosity. Was that shipped in a box or a crate? Cardboard, or wood? I feel for your loss, and totally understand the problem you are having. Keep trying to get them to take responsibility for the carelessness of their employees. Get the company you purchased from involved so that they can provide information on how they ship their packages. UPS needs to be taught a lesson.

RE: Ultimate 120 from Nitroplanes
Well, I just got my excuse for a tax return from the Fed, so it's set off to the side. Now I need to come up with another 100, so I hope to have it here before the end of April, and airborne shortly after that. It'll be my first bipe, but I've flown other aerobatic planes and have fellow pilots at the field to ask questions, so I'm not too concerned about flight characteristics. Not to mention, the G/F really like biplanes, and this is her recommendation, I just happened to find the plane and I'm really excited.

RE: Ultimate 120 from Nitroplanes
I've got a SuperTiger .90 that was in my really heavy Carl Goldberg Extra 300 (Kit, someone else built, and I was the third an final owner.) That engine pulled the Extra around all day long, flyting weight of that thing was like 12 pounds. Do you think that engine will be enough for the yellow 55" Ultimate? Based on the specs on the web site, it shouldn't be a problem. Plus, I'm not planning on flying 3D, just doesn't appeal to me.

RE: Buddy Box Battery Conversion . . . Is it possible?
Go to radio shack and get a 120 VAC to DC converter. Like this one, [link=http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049690&cp=2032056.2032136.2032153&pg=2&parentPage=family]Radio Shack DC converter[/link]. Make sure you set it for 9 volts. If it supplies 12 volts, I think it does, you can try that if 9 doesn't work. Remove the battery altogether, and solder a futaba power connector to you new converter, or make a dongle or whatever. Cut a hole or notch in your battery cover so your new cord can hang out. Plug the Futaba side or you converter in to your buddy box, and the other side to the wall. Plug in your converter, turn on your radio and fly away! Not really a hard modification, with a little electronic experience, you should be fine.
