I don't remember what the various alum upgrades cost, but they were not very expensive back when they were "readily available" at your local hobby shops...

Ahhh Kids! Must be nice bein' young...the weight of the world not yet on your back, and all the wonderful events (like global warming, and the draft) to look forward to... Anyhoo, here's a pic of my Chaos three years ago, when it was "new"; actually "slightly used" $60.00 from some guy at a Carl's Jr. in the San Fernando Valley. It had barely been broken-in, and of course already had a stripped rear pinion..."so it began"

Oh by the way... if any of you Chaos enthusists like punk music I suggest you check-out a local Orange County (Fullerton, CA) band called The Audacity. I've seen them about 20 times in the last year, and they are freakin' great! Sorry, I got off subject. Hey...No comments on my Vulcan body on a Chaos (I also have the purple-bluish version...there about $4.00 at HobbyPeople if you can find them, and a bunch of other non-essential parts fit too).

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
Here's what I envision: In a perfect world we would go over to the mall and go into "Gears-R-Us" and get (from Stock) some obscure high-strength steel ring and pinions for an obsolete, discontinued, Chinese (Ok...Taiwanese) POS, but we don't live in a perfect world (ergo, no World Peace either, but I ramble...) So Ben...go ahead and cast your precious aluminum gears, to be horded by some Gollum-like RC cretins (much like myself), and let them be fondled and lubed prior to insertion to the cheap plastic innerds of your fondest mini Chaos or Piktor Miwi.

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
Hey Blue...I don't know where if anyplace to get them anymore. A couple years ago I called 732-562-1234 which was Trinity (in New Jersey). The part number was #TRI32008 (Metal Drive with Outdrive) probably for a Mini-Inferno. You'll need two sets, ie. front and rear. Go ahead and lock-up your center diff with JB at this time to get 4-wheel braking. I heard on the grapevine that the company carring Trinity Products moved to Florida and now the parts are scarce, so be creative and find them with your skills...it's kinda like a scavanger hunt...hey you other Chaos Clones, chime-in anytime. The first clue is in a Hot Dog...no, a hamburger. Buried deep within a genuine Hawkins Burger you will find the website that tells how to make your Piktor Miwi bulletproof...but I ramble...

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
You'll like the Trinity pinions. They are 14 teeth vs. stock 12, so it should accelerate faster, but top end will suffer slightly. I noticed a big difference this weekend, switching from the larger Mini Inferno tires down to CrimeFighters (which are larger than stock), but it's still fun... and no more stripped gears (as long as you keep them lubed).

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
I rebuilt my rear end last night (for the umpteenth time...); the axels had sort of welded them selves to the plastic housings so it was running like a locker in the back for a while. The ring was still fine against the metal 14 tooth Trinity. No major wear on either gear and slight shimming helps immensly. Of course, having a sight window and fill hole make life a lot easier. I tend to overcheck. and add a couple drops of silicone oil every couple of tanks though since it's so easy and you can see inside for any damage to the ring.

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
P.S. I got some CrimeFighter tires yesterday for my little beast yesterday. They are slightly smaller diameter then the Mini Inferno X-treads that I wore out (but larger than stock). They should give it pretty strong acceleration and traction; it has a bunch of small uniform knobs. I'll try to run it today or tomorrow and see whay gives...

How do I bind two models?
I'm an OG, so pardon my ignorance... I have a DX-3.0, and two receivers. How do I setup the radio to work either car? It's probably real simple, but the instructions are a little confusing. Will I have to take the receivers out to do this, or can they stay in the boxes?

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
I repaired my Chaos last night from a direct hit with a huge rock when my throttle jammed wide open (damn bell-crank set-up). I was lucky cause the only real damage was that the chasis bent up right under the front diff, and a screw poped put of the c-hub. Everything straightend up nicely and I readjusted the end-point on my Spectrum to avoid these kinds of fun n' games in the future...

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
Based on their quality I'd guess that the Chaos is fabricated in China (don't let the "Japanese" Toki engine fool you). As we all know it is private labled from a French company called Piktor and is known in Europe as the Piktor Miwi. As far as I can tell mechanically they are identical, right down to the cheapity plastic gears...I wonder if they have any suggestions or solutions to its various issues.

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
Yeah, RC77 is probably right. The stock motors have plenty of power, considering the car's major issues and shortcommings. The car's great in concept, but falls short in the quality of components the the average R/C modeler has come to expect from even the crappiest Chinese knock-off...But like so many people (myself included) said: "For Sixty Bucks What can your lose?" So here, about a million diff rebuilds later I'm Post #1626 on an endless thread.

Hey Lugg...apparently John (in Post #1610) just ordered some yesterday, so hopefully he will enlighten us as to where to get them. I don't know if the the Kyosho pinions will work, but I checked out their ring gear (also very shiny), and it didn't look like it would work without a bunch of machine work.

Greg, The H.H. cust. svc used to be cool. But they probably ran out of most of the really expendable parts a long time ago. Now, we've just become a bunch of ragtag owners trying to keep an obsolete (yet strangly unique) car viable.

Yeah Greg...we all pretty much learned "the hard way" that Horizon customer support was lacking on these little beasts. That's why there is a 65 page thread on them; mostly dealing with their problems and idoisyncrocies, etc. I still like mine a lot, especially with the Trinitys. I recently hit a big rock at speed and bent the front chasis. I think I can straighten it pretty well by hand and it should be good to go again.

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
Hey John, I totally blew it on the Hitec servo number. The REAL numbers are: HS-65 MG (Metal gears- I used these for the steering), and HS-65 HB (which have super strong Karbonite gears which I used on the throttle/brake) Either will be fine for both applications in such a light car. The Associated servo sever was #38449 (I think...) These had the correct spline, but I did use some of the existing Chaos servo saver components to make it work with the small stock ball screw. As far as the "slivers" of fuel line, these act as spacers between the dogbones and the screws in the front drive cups and you will definately need to use then in the new Trinity drive cups when you install them (because the is a little too much slop there). Remenber that the new Trinity pinion will be 14 teeth compared to 12 in the stocker. The mesh is very good, but possibly shim them for a perfect fit. Grease it real good, or fill the whole assembly with silicone oil like I did (you'll probably want to add a small filler plug at the top of the housing so you can check gear condition and re-fill with oil often since some WILL seep out... P.S. The little red button in the picture is a simple vinyl screw cap available at Home Depot (two for $.50) to plug the hole for easy access between runs.

RE: SPORTWERKS chaos 1/16 buggy
Hey John...good luck w/ your Chaos. I've had mine for a couple years now but the stock electronics was obviously dogmeat from the get-go. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't used a decent, but fairly cheap Spectrum DX3 or Futaba. Anyway often the LHS have specials: I got my Spectrum DX3 with and extra receiver and two nice servos (used them in my 1/8 Ofna buggy) for about $205.00 last year. Also Hobby People had HiTec HG645's on sale too (these mini's are real strog and nearly a drop-in fit. Get an Associated servo saver while your at it. These changes will vastly improve the little turd; and the upside will be the extra receiver for your boat. If anyone is interested, I might be pursuaded to sell or trade one or both of my old K&B nitro outboards...

I think that a fellow named Ben on this forum was going to cast them... at least the crowm (ring) gear in aluminum, to be used with the Trinity pinion and drive cup. As far as a slipper set-up I don't know much about those. Keep looking for a solution, possibly there are Trinity parts available from other sources. Good Luck!

Hey Lug...When I got my Trinity's I ordered them by phone from their old location somewhere in New Jersey (I think), then shortly thereafter the company moved to Florida I'm pretty sure. I guess they're having some growing pains and customer service is lacking. Here are pics showing the aluminum C-hubs for a Chaos, and a Vulcan body on one.
