RE: Ace High Glider..
Mine is converted to electric, added elevator. Also added wing area with trailing edge stock, as is suggested in instructions.. Thermals just fine. I have the "plan", it has full size frames and sides, the other views are 1/2 scale I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP7mvyXZSE0

Congratulations! Glad to hear that. Sorry no video, I use a $7 keyfob camera on my cap. You can also fly it on a plane Lots of info here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=13168615&postcount=1

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Thanks! Maybe you can do a video too - I look forward to it My Shrike was built light, and I usually fly with a 2200 3s, but I did try a 2200 4s. It flys fine but drops quicker with the 4s. It gained only a few MPH so I quit using it. (the 4s made it more tricky to hand launch too) If your plane does not flare out, you might need to move the CG back a little. Test when inverted, if it pulls toward the ground it might be nose heavy.

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
For landing I sometimes flip the throttle if the prop is vertical, then if it's ok, land. My plane might be more draggy than yours, but I fly a circuit at low throttle, then cut on final. It comes in quite fast and lands like a rock skipping on water, maybe 30mph. It's fairly easy because the sink rate is high so I land well above stall speed. If I get a chance I'll do a video next week

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Sorry for the news of damage, but it sounds repairable No need for a folding prop, just use the hard brake setting on the ESC. I have no problem belly landing - the prop is motionless. If its within 45deg of horizontal I'll land, if not I go around. I currently use a Zinger wood prop, no problem with 8x8 APC either.

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
I run a 3S 2200mah lipo, rated at 30c. No problem with 40amps, the battery should be capable of 30x2.2 or 66amp. If you are seeing such a drop in voltage, I agree that your battery is not very good, better get a new one, the plane will fly better too.

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Thanks, I flew a test flight before logging, no trim needed, so went with the logger. It's a Transystem i-Blue 821, set to record every second. We have benchmarked various planes with the logger, radar and doppler. Results usually within 5mph. I go for the logger, I can do a speed test "one mistake high", doppler and radar work best when the plane is low and close.

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
My motor is aHobby King Hextronic similar to this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4917 I have elevons which is a great setup, lots of room in the fuse. However, I put it in the ground a few weeks ago, one of the aileron extensions disconnected leaving me with one control surface. The plane spiralled into a tree, bounced off, and hit into soft dirt. It was barely damaged, fixed with CA and packaging tape over the covering rips. Flew it again the next day. I've been meaning to fly it with a GPS logger inside, might get a chance today BTW I also agree about static testing, almost worthless with high pitch props, and even dangerous as far as motor loading. I only check for a second or two max.

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
With the 8x8 prop at WOT static, I pull 40 amps at 12volts, so 480 watt. That's with a 1500kv motor. Maybe Juan's motor is 1kw capable, but my guess it would need a bigger prop than I use to get there.

Not too big, mine is the same (see previous posts) except 1500kv. I ran 8x8E APC prop, now running a 9x7 wood Zinger. Goes about 88mph.

Your weight is not too high, if you get it to 2lb. I checked mine, it;s 1lb 11oz with a 2200ma 3s, so there's a way to save weight. I use digital micro 20g metal gear servos, lighter than standards and strong enough. That's a nice job you did with the motor hatch!

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Hi! For Electric, you should conside using elevons, one servo in each wing. That leaves lots of room in the fuselage for batteries. There's a picture of mine in a post a few pages back Good luck!

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
You can get a fair estimate of speed using Doppler. There are a couple of RC versions that you can use. Need flypast at top speed, as low as possible, 2sec inbound 2 sec outbound minimum. Record sound or video. See positngs by THE DON on rcgroups for more info.

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Sorry, yes that's mph. It's the theoretical speed of the air pumped by the prop. The plane will go that fast only if 100% efficient, which none is. The good news is that the engine rpm will increase in flight, so speed will increase (you knew that!). Here's a useful link. (And your pipe will make it sing!) http://www.rcpro.org/rccalc/PitchSpeed.aspx

Nice plane, great video too! The liitle camera will interest a lot of folks. Good to have one at the field. I was hoping for some high speed passes, it looks pretty quick, I would do a doppler speed check! You just need to convert the AVI to a WAV and use the wavescope wosc21 program.

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Thanks! I'll let you know - For electric I like the 34.5in size. If I get around to it I'll sketch a draft and build another with elevons, but I'll make it more like the classic design to beef up the rear end. Then I can go with more power. I was also considering a Funjet. They go real fast, there are some insane mods out there. I just don't like foam because it's harder to keep batteries cool

RE: SHRIKE CLUB # 1
Hi all This is my plane which some think is a kit bashed Shrike. I received it as a broken plane and am third user. It was possibly set up as an electric pusher, hence the mods, but also has run a glo up front. I have put a 2820 equivalent outrunner on it and it runs great. Big advantage with elevon setup is there are no servos in the fuse. Lots of room for battery power. I wonder if elevons were more doable when the plane was designed, everyone would have them?? vic
