RE: H9-F6F Hellcat 60 ARF
ORIGINAL: irocbsa Guys, please be wary when ordering those retracts. They are completely incapable of consistently lifting even the lightest of tires and struts that I could find. I finally gave up. Even if you do get a set that works for more than 10 cycles, the slop in the gear is so horrendous that you will have a helluva time getting down the runway. I too thought that the price point and ''all metal'' construction couldn't be beat and go lured into buying a set. Please don't make the same mistake. Unfortunately, there is still a huge void in the market while we wait for someone to come out with an affordable and reliable set of rotating electric retracts.
+1 The RC Lander "metal" is low quality cast aluminum, won't take anything larger than a 3lbs foamy. I recommend Lado's, I still have a set I bought off Doug's garage back in 2009. It;s been used on a BH P-40 and now on a [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1141201/mpage_100/key_/tm.htm]H9 Corsair[/link], they are machined aluminum really solid! Nick
ORIGINAL: drube I hear ya on the LG.. I'm on my 3rd set now. Just waiting for some reliable proven electric retracts.
Lado's rotating are recommended, the H9 Corsair is the 3rd plane that carries them and they never gave me any trouble. Note I have the original 2009 version made in Doug's garage with 4mm stud, the new ones made in France are supposed to be even better Nick

Nice paint job! Here's a [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_1141201/mpage_99/key_/tm.htm]link[/link] to a similar one on the H9 Corsair (post 2467 onwards). Regarding engine cooling, do you think the exhaust channels and little holes on the bottom of the cowl will be enough? I would consider baffles and louvres, after all its a gasser ... Here;s some useful [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11071695/tm.htm]reference material[/link] on gas engine cooling Nick

RE: What Aircraft are you installing your DLE20
ORIGINAL: SpinnerRow
ORIGINAL: skypup50 I ordered a DLE 20 which I plan to install in a 120 Spacewalker. I have this BH Birddog with flaps. I was going to fly it electric. Not flown yet. Do you think the dle 20 would work in this plane? 74'' span, 7.7 pounds advertised weight (I guess with a 90 4 stroke). It does not say 90 to 120 but is considered a 60 sized plane. Thanks
I have a DLE 20 on a 12lb Great Planes PT-17 and it is more than enough to do spirited aerobatics. Run a Xoar or Vess 17x6 prop and you will be fine. Anything under 9lbs and the plane will have unlimited and accelerating vertical with a DLE 20.
Reinforce the firewall, wing joint and check stabs-elevators before attempting high-G aerobatics

RE: Hits and Misses of H-9 Corsair
ORIGINAL: Dangaras Iniially the corsairs had both sides of the blades painted but the pilots complained about falling asleep or getting airsick after staring at the prop during flight. That resulted in in the paint being removed from the rear of the blades.
Interesting fact! Pappy Boyington mentions in his book that he made a kind of auto-pilot device using strings and rubber bands to attach the stick to the cockpit so he could doze during long cruises. I can't tell if his sleepiness was from the prop or he was dozing off his hangover [:D] Drube, how is your Corsair going?

Two comments, the white on the prop should only be on the front of the blades as the pilots used to get air sick watching the white or yellow circle while flying. Also you need a pilot!!! I measured 1,6 kg including LADO retracts, robostruts and 3,75" robart scale wheels. Rough guess would be 1,2 kg w/o landing gear.

drube, Mine is painted and clearcoated, with Lado retracts, robostruts and Robart scale wheels (all heavier than stock), dry weight about 8,5 lbs. The Saito 100 turning 14x7x3 @ 9,200 RPM gives plenty of power and she's not fully broken in yet rino, I reinforced the retract mount - bottom spar using a U-shaped steel rod (see pics). I use this mod on planes with rotating retracts (eg P-40s) ever since the wing folded on my H9 Hellcat at this very spot. I also glass the wheel bay area and wet all accessible ribs, spars, leading edge etc with thin CA

RE: Hits and Misses of H-9 Corsair
I would agree the Corsair is risky for that type of flying and the heavier it gets the more trouble you'll get with rotating retracts. A Spit, P-51, Me-109, FW-190, Ki-84 should be safer, faster and more fun Meanwhile here's some cockpit shots:

RE: Hits and Misses of H-9 Corsair
rino The area inside the firewall - tank is quite large but with a small opening due to the tank mount. Therefore the technique is: - Cut about 20 small pieces (1" square) of 1/2 oz cloth - Mix finishing epoxy and use a brush to spread it on the firewall and all the wood in the tank area. You might want to bend the epoxy brush to get to the hard to reach areas like the bottom of the tank area - Place the cloth on the firewall-fuse joint and anywhere else you can using long tweezers or a hemostat - Use the brush again to wet the cloth with more epoxy Photos after glassing

RE: Hits and Misses of H-9 Corsair
Dangaras I've read about wing folds and experienced it myself on the H9 Hellcat three years ago. Since then on all my planes with rotating retracts (where the bottom spar is divided at the wheel bay area) I reinforce the retract area with extra wood, glassing and the U-shaped wire that effectively subtitutes the bottom spar in the area of the wing that supports the plane's weight, suffers G forces with up-elev and also gets the landing impacts. I've done it on a couple of P-40s and haven't had any problem since.
